    Even if they were to add a heating element (like the Flair 58), you still have the issue of having to swap cups once you get your desired output (and you can’t pressure profile like a Flair 58). And they are asking $385. Looks cool, but has way too many shortcomings.

    • @LanceHedrick

      For sure. The reservoir stays pressurized and, unless you immediately open the valve, it will continue extracting, which is a head ache.

    Great video! Love how you keep finding these new coffee projects to showcase. I feel like a few dollars worth of household items could already improve the design of this thing. Would love to see how much a beer koozie with some holes cut out for the legs and handles helps heat retention and if tying a string to the release valve lets you keep hands far enough away to safely drop the pressure rapidly and end a shot without needing a second cup.

    Seems like most of the "portable" espresso manufacturers regard convection as an afterthought sadly enough... Would make more sense to create a sort of double walled/isolated chamber instead (I think the robot kind of does this). I'm glad you made extensive measurements! As others mentioned, I think that the pump is a generic repackaged/rebranded Chinese tire pump. It looked like the Xiaomi Mi compressor at first glance, but they are slightly different.

    I am intrigued to what effects creating a pressurized chamber with air has, rather than using a plunger design or pressurizing the water line.

    Interesting idea, a portable 58 mm solution with a battery pump. Though the small pump is doesn't look the best, the valve seems to be standard, so I think you one could use better pumps as well, eventually even supporting pressure profiling. Anyway, the Flair 58 looks better, to me for preheating and especially manual pressure profiling (full control).

    Unless you can preheat it with open flame and reach temperature of more than 100 °C, you still wouldn't be able to start brewing quickly enough before all those heat-conducting metals dissipate more than 10 °C away from the water. Maybe for the second model they would consider using thick silicone to cover the brew head. The design is intriguing but I wonder if you can use normal bike pump to pump the pressure since the valve looked similar enough to Schrader valve.

    It's really a nice idea on paper to just isolate a group head and then use an air pump to reach desired pressure. But I think they fixated too much on the elusive 9 bar that they forgot about everything else. How could they otherwise have neglected to see that it doesn't retain sufficient heat even after 3 pre-heat cycles, or that there's no way to stop the brewing on command?

    • @LanceHedrick
      @LanceHedrick  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      For sure. So often people worry about the number or bars because it is easy (and cheap) to verify. Temp at the group measured accurately requires expensive tools. Harder to double check. Easier to overlook

  • @paritybit7830
    @paritybit7830 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    Hmmm. That seems entirely fixable, all it needs is an insulating jacket. If I had one here right now, I have some honeycomb heat-resistant silicone pads (for resting hot pans on) that could easily be cut to fit and epoxied together to make a removable jacket. However, for the price, I don't feel like I should have to. I could just get a Robot, or Flair, or Nomad. Or if I really wanted and needed mechanical power, and I'm looking at modding anyway, well, we're not that far from Gaggia Classic (and then I can get a fully kitted out machine.. eventually... with enough modding).
    To be compelling, I feel like it needs to come with an insulation solution in place as well as quick-release valve fittings without changing significantly in price; then it is comparable to other ready-made, compact, espresso-only entry and/or portable devices, but with a pump (of sorts) instead of a lever. That's a very specific niche, but there would definitely be people that bought it.
    Probably not me. But at least I can see the value proposition then.
    Also, as a side note, I don't think it should be that hard to provide room for a lot more water in there. If it were capable of longs and sprovers then I think there'd be a bit more room for a higher price since that is a specific weakness of its category, and I think it'd be as simple as a larger chamber, maybe a bit of shaping to the chamber so it doesn't push too much water into the puck before pressure begins. Might cost to much in portability though, this is a pretty strong contender on that front in its current configuration.

    While this device may fill the void in the space of 'portable espresso devices', there are still major flaws that need to be addressed. One of them is certainly the need to unscrew the entire upper compartment to fill it with water... The time needed to resit the lid is enough to have a considerable drop in temperature. Nonetheless, once some of the bigger issues have been reviewed, this could be a great travel buddy.

    Espresso machines need to do 2 things. Get the right pressure and temperature to the puck. If it can't do either well, its not a good machine. While pressure can be tricky, temperature is straightforward to achieve.
    Sounds like they spent more effort on coming up with a hip name and very little on engineering decisions. As someone who is currently designing an espresso machine as well, this blatant temperature oversight is almost too stupid to be seem real. This is a paperweight at best.
