- The Real Horror Stories of Appalachia | Short Documentary
In 2019, 43 million people in the United States lived below the poverty line, twice as many as it was fifty years before. 1.5 million children were homeless, three times more than during the Great Depression in the 1930s. Entire families are tossed from one place to another to work unstable jobs that barely allow them to survive. In the historically poor Appalachian mining region, people rely on food stamps for food.

The only reason that the poor are overweight it is cheaper to buy junk food, fruit vegetables and meat costs too. It should be the other way around. Nobody in the Western world should wait around for medical treatment, not like that .😢
I’m poor and it sucks not being able to afford fresh fruit and meat
@tyleranderson3558 it's not like that everywhere in the US. And there just aren't jobs everywhere. When the only thing your town has is a grocery store and a gas station and you're 4 generations deep, getting out isn't possible or even a thought be consider. Those places don't hire because the whole town applies there. No construction _because there is no money to build._ You having been fortunate doesn't mean everyone is and your arrogance isn't helpful to the situation.
Plus fast-food accepts ebt
That's a lie fat people tell
Indeed it should be. And it should be the other way around for health care too so that, even with insurance, you don't have to be rich to afford it.
These are some of the most misfortunate people in America.Yet they are some of the most thankful and patriotic.
In other words dumb
Not to mention genuinely kind qnd caring
And that's the problem! Brainwashing people into being happy with their low station in life so that America's big wigs get all the benefit is insane.
The irony being that they keep voting red, the party that wants to eliminate the social programs they depend on.
What a wonderful world when people come together to help one another❤❤❤❤
I was born in Kentucky and raised in New York. My heart goes out to the people of Appalachia. I wish I had the means to do something to help them someday possibly that dream can come true. The level of poverty in the United States has grown exponentially.
What part of New York
@@jm7578 for one of ,if not THE richest country in the world,it’s a disgrace to see such huge poverty !!
@@LeahDyson-kq4bd I live in upstate New York far away from New York City. I am minutes away from the countryside and it is a very different area than New York City people would ever want to be in.
I'm glad to see human beings helping other human beings that are less fortunate then they are and doing it with kindness and respect 💘
I live in the foothills of Appalachia. Many around me are poor and will get as much out of you as they can. You would be surprised about how many play victims get food stamps and section 8 housing. Sadly, those that truly need it don't always get the help.
Why doesn’t their senator, Mitch McConnell, one of the powerful people in the world, help? Oh,that’s right. He doesn’t give a f!!!

@@kate1830 who says they don't care about children? That just sounds like something the otherside would say. The democrat party is the national socialist party today like the 3rd Reich in later 30s till the end of the war. The democratic regime is strictly devoted to the party or state not the individual. This country was built on the principals that the citizens are protected by US Constitution and Bill of Rights. Neither party nor the federal government can infringe upon their rights. Republicans are those who represent the Constitutional Republic we are not a democracy! We have the Constitution.. Get with the facts people, please let's help eachother! USA all the way! @@williamjameslehy1341socialism and communist is a the same thing Marxist lol.
I once “saw”, but I digress.
There’s a family where I live who are in their mid 30s… they have SIX (living) children. They live in the public housing where utilities are also fully paid, get free phones and service, internet, free christmas and birthday gifts for their kids, etc. The mom “homeschools” the kids and doesn’t work. The dad works menial labor jobs for six months then goes on unemployment for six months. They actually believe that is a normal way to live.
For them it probably is. People who seem content to live like that don't know how to live any other way. They are completely lacking in every possible way even a nodding acquaintance with the most basic of life skills. No one teaches children life skills. It's a tragedy.
My dentist has volunteered with Random Access Medicine for a long time. He told me that he often has to pull every tooth in someone's mouth because there has been so much damage to the gums and so many broken teeth. He said that when they are done they take a quick casting before they wake up and they make dentures right there. They were originally founded to bring medical care to third world countries, but now they also serve Americans.
I'm from WAR, West Virginia .
A coal mining town at one time.
Now more than half of the town is a ghost town. Meth is taken over
God bless you my heart breaks for West Virginia. It’s a state that I want to visit badly and I do know that they have the hardest times there. I wish you and your family the best.
What did this have to do with Trump? I never heard them say his name once on this video?
There's a longer version
Might want to look at electoral maps. This is the heart of Trump Country. In plenty of these dying small towns, the only way you can even tell you're in the current year is the abundance of "LET'S GO BRANDON!" flags.

Disturbing to see anyone's misfortune!
Each individual and each household is certainly unique.
It is not always easy to market anything.
If a household can put together a product there can be certain difficulties in establishing a business and maintaining a business.
There are a number of codes, ordinances, and laws just with establishing a business.
It seems like a number of agricultural concerns could be developed with some households even if just growing some things indoors. Conceivably some vegetables could be grown, mushrooms, and insects such as mealworms.
Of course, any ventures like this can be a steep challenge for many.
I do not know why people are not getting better medical insurance.
Thank you for your helpful and informative videos!
Medical insurance costs skyrocketed for the average person under the Affordable Care Act, (ACA) known as "Obama Care". Now people must pay $700-&1000.00 USD per month for premiums, and still have to pay for co-pays and medicines and meet minimum before the "insurance" will kick in and help. Before, the ACA, many paid less than half that before, and had better access to care. Obama care-what a joke. The only one that was helped was the insurance companies - by all the additional cash they get for doing less.
I've seen people form food co-ops so they can get low-cost healthy food. I've seen parents who purge junk food from the home. I've known parents who put their kids on birth control to prevent teen pregnancy. And I've known people who wouldn't help themselves and leeched off others (including my family.)
That,s everywhere.
I live in Appalachia now and was born here, but have lived away for most of my life (from teen years - mid 30s).
When I first came back after years of living out West, the poverty was shocking. In most of the country, you’re considered wealthy if you own expensive properties, have large investments, huge savings, etc. In my corner of Appalachia, you are considered rich if you can afford to eat every day and heat your home in the winter.
I feel very economically privileged living where I do now, and I felt positively poor out on the west coast. It’s all about perspective.
You guys have no idea what it's like. I dare you to live in their shoes and keep making fun.
Very true👍... I bet
True homie
@Tyler Anderson seems like you already are
Where is this at? I’ve never heard of medical gatherings like this
Them republicans have made them idiots believe its a bad thing and people dont want to work that need help and its not the case and they have them making fun of there fellow Americans because they it when most of there supporters are on it or need it and its all for power but they say everyone else needs to wake up
Many blessings to the people In Appalachia❤
Our country gives billions of dollars to other countries, But ignores all this. What a shame. Our politicians need to be replaced with real Americans that care
Even worse your government gives people money and a place to stay wo enter illegally. But let the people who fought for your country live like this.
Both of you are uneducated. It shows. Do your homework.
Blame the people of Appalachia who always ALWAYS vote against their best interests because of the lies their conservative politicians tell them. It's not other people or another countries' fault that they are being screwed over and forgotten. It's their fault. Stop voting for Republicans.
Giving money to other countries is humanitarian, giving money and aid to your fellow countryman is socialist
@@gregandrews4604 Totally agree. the VA system itself, Social Security (which even has "social" in its name) are both socialist systems.
I love Miss Sirenia's cheerful outlook even yhough I know it is probably only pretense or a facade. I have nothing myself and have no doubts that when my present landlord/roommate passes, he is 76 and in poor health, I will be homeless. 😅 already live in terror of that day. Unlike Sirenia though, I can only rarely exhibit happiness or an attitude of optimism. I am 61 years old and while life gifted me with above average intelligence and a natural talent to easily learn new things, it also threw an entire toolbox into the works, just for fun, by making sure I had a childhood that I would never ever be able to overcome with any degree of success. I know its my fault. But when I see others living as do I, barely able to eat, I have to wonder just what in the actual fxxk the world can feasibly expect us to be cheerful about. We have nothing. We never will. Thats hard to swallow.
You're not the only one , I'm 57 and I have nothing was homeless for 5 years , the only reason I have a place to live is because of a family member and I have no income and get food stamps, my sister stole my inheritance from my parents while I was on the streets!!! But you gotta drive on !!😂😂
Grow gardens and can for the winter
South east Kentucky and Virginia are the most poverty striken areas in America it's sad no work nothing sad that those in office just forget about people in the Appalachian .
These mobile homes are really nice inside. I love it
Literally,I'm crying
Wow, that long line and people driving in desperate to seek medical help is heartbreaking.
In Australia, we have a pretty good public healthcare system, where you pay fairly minimum to see a GP- about US$45 per appointment or if you need a specific healthcare attention at a public hospital , you can go onto a waitlist if it's not emergency.
But you will be attended to.
And pretty minimal gov subsidised costs for hospital as well.
Of course you can opt to have private health insurance cover which gets you seen immediately at hospitals.
I do feel incredibly empathetic seeing this scene in the US as well as the incredible amounts of drug addiction and homelessness which appears so prevalent in the US now.
And the disparity of the ultra rich socio economic to the ultra poor in the US... Just incredible.
It needs to start from a top down approach for a significant change in socio economic crisis in the US.
I live in West Virginia, and when you grow up in these scenerios you think its normal heck sometimes we think were rich!
It's shameful to see that such a rich nation has so much poverty. However I still don't understand why people choose to have kids they can't afford and live in areas where there are no jobs.
How are they going to move if their poor
@Tyler Anderson a bus ticket? Then what exactly?
I hear that sentiment alot " they're poor why do they have kids???"... Well believe it or not poor people fall in love & want to have children like most other couples. It's kinda a running theme in humans since... Well, you know the dawn of time.
@Tyler Anderson it's a lot more than that
@J. r. Also not too far in the past people had lots of kids to help them in farming and business... the tradition is continued unconsciously.
They'd be better off if they have rice pasta and beans
Lagimes are great for stretching out food
And gardens.
Agreed! I’m vegan in a rural part of Appalachia (after living elsewhere for most of my life), and I eat exactly that. Rice, pasta, beans and other legumes, and fresh produce I grow myself. I’d never dream of eating animal flesh or “fast food” on a daily basis.
Gardening and canning like they did in the old days
Why are the amounts of money mentioned in euros ?
Video was done in Germany where they call money, euro.
I never will understand why poor people keep making babies. And there is no way to stop them apparently.
I am from the eastern Kentucky region of Appalachia. You have to move where the jobs are. Plenty of jobs in other regions of Kentucky and other states.
If they lived in California, the ebt cards balance for that families size would be close to 2000 us dollars per month
Are you for or against food stamps?
California has a higher cost of living, that's why
@@jareds9863It's astronomical
Cost of living in California is a lot higher
California is also going to be bankrupt and has the largest number of people escaping it. I live here and it is really horrible. 2000 for food is a rediculous number for food. 25,000 a year.
This was an interesting little video showcasing the worst poverty in the US, which can be found in Appalachia, especially in McDowell county, West Virginia. However, I assure you no one in Appalachia has ever so much as seen a Euro; we still have US dollars here; lol. But, who knows, Maybe one day we'll join the EU!

Why stay in Appalachia and not move out to The South : Virginia,North Carolina,South Carolina,Georgia,Florida or West to Montana,Wyoming ,etc .

Working class means working.
Food Stamps but no Medicaid?
Not all states will approve medicaid for working age adults with no children under 18
ITS ABOUT TIME !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I know a guy that is from Slovakia and he lives in Las Vegas, he's the worst alcoholic I've ever met and he lives off of our country. He panhandles so he can drink alcohol all day, he gets $500 a month food stamps and even has an apartment to live in that the state has given him just because he was homeless. He's not even American. It's crazy how he gets all this help and he doesn't want to even help himself. He's actually in detox for the 10th time this time I told him he needs to stop drinking. He's the only person I've ever met that goes to detox only to drink right after and has no plan of Rehabilitation
Cool story, dude. 🙄
Killed the coal industry- still some resilient people- survivors...
When they continually produce children into this life when they can’t afford their own food my sympathy level starts to drop
I don't understand why the money is counted in euros...
Video was made in Germany.
glad to see people are still using my native region to make sappy documentaries that makes others feel better about themselves.
For real.
The healthcare system in America is so terrible. As a retired widow on Medicare I pay 90 copay each visit! Pray i don't get really sick.

Heathen. God put these children on this earth, pro-life is the way.
Farmers produce more food than people can buy at market prices. SNAP helps bridge the gap. Doctors can't establish practices here that would earn enough money to pay for their medical training. The invisible hand of the free market is at work.
The healthcare system crashed after oSCAMa not improved…
The Government has more better things to do than saving Appalachian people !
Health care improvements with Obama care 😂 I payed $35 to see my doctor with out using insurance after Obama care $200 because doctors had to pay more for their insurance to practice as a doctor
You don’t understand how insurance works. It shows.
Obamacare solved nothing and made more people not have health insurance. Thank God Trump did away with the tax penalty for not having Obamacare. I finally got health insurance through my work this year, it's not cheap. But because of inflation I can't go to the doctor and afford to pay my bills and buy food for my family. Thanks democrats!
Poor people don't eat breakfast, lunch & dinner. We eat breakfast, dinner, and supper.
Why are they talking Euros
I don't understand why you don't have free healthcare.

No such thing as free.
You might think it's free healthcare, but someone pays such as taxpayers.
Johnson’s plan was lacking one thing. An end date! And now a specific population has made a lifestyle of it!
I live in WV and mostly their just lazy. Guess what in the real world even people who work can’t afford dental work and dentures. I pay for dental insurance and still paid around $2000 out of my pocket for 2 root canals and crowns. My husband needs dentures but it will cost us around $3500 after insurance. No body is lining to give him free teeth.

@@daniel-inowe don’t have it better. We’re just more human… But speaking from Italy I’m not sure for how long. Far right is coming back with racism and hate for poor people.

This is absurd for the richest country in the world
Why is the dollar referred to as EUROS?

No words but one .....greed .The wealthiest do not pay their fair share of taxes.
No one should live like this in supposedly the greatest country in the world.
I have Appalachian blood in me,granddaughter of a coal miner from West Virginia so feel close to these souls.God bless those who participate and provide for them.
The rich pay their taxes! Stop believing the lies. The problem is too much regulation. These coal mines need to reopen (modern technology can reduce black lung and environmental waste). Adult education programs need to be offered so our people can gain skills, experience and licenses they need for jobs. Kentucky needs to get rid of state income tax and find ways to entice energy corporations to return and start mining the coal and start drilling for all the untapped oil and natural gas. The forest can be responsibly logged. Just those three industries can bring people in which brings me back to education, plumbers, electricians, carpenters… It’s a big circle. Telling the rich to pay more than what they already do is assigning and does nothing but keep them from being the fuel to start the circle from turning. STOP LISTENING TO LIBERAL GIBBERISH AND EDUCATE YOURSELF!
You are well behind half of Europe.
Sorry, none of the starving locals looked starving...
And these are the people that get mad that the people fixing their teeth get a little different loan relief.
In such fertile land, why not grow your own food? Are the people prevented from doing so due to landowners? I'm not criticizing, just curious.
It's just shameful how medical care is not available to everyone in the US. The ACA or Obama care was a step in the right direction but it still included the multi millions of $ paid to health insurance companies and their huge overhead and highly paid executives. We have Medicare for the elderly. And it should be made available to the poor as well.
Obamacare is a disaster. Try going 13 years with no health insurance because of it. 13 years of not knowing if I have some malicious cancer ,or something even worse. And now that I was able to buy health insurance through my job I still can't see a doctor because Bidenomics has made it impossible to pay your bills and buy food. Thanks democrats! Very cool!
