  • The Real Horror Stories of Appalachia | Short Documentary
In 2019, 43 million people in the United States lived below the poverty line, twice as many as it was fifty years before. 1.5 million children were homeless, three times more than during the Great Depression in the 1930s. Entire families are tossed from one place to another to work unstable jobs that barely allow them to survive. In the historically poor Appalachian mining region, people rely on food stamps for food.

The only reason that the poor are overweight it is cheaper to buy junk food, fruit vegetables and meat costs too. It should be the other way around. Nobody in the Western world should wait around for medical treatment, not like that .😢

@tyleranderson3558 it's not like that everywhere in the US. And there just aren't jobs everywhere. When the only thing your town has is a grocery store and a gas station and you're 4 generations deep, getting out isn't possible or even a thought be consider. Those places don't hire because the whole town applies there. No construction _because there is no money to build._ You having been fortunate doesn't mean everyone is and your arrogance isn't helpful to the situation.

They live in the public housing where utilities are also fully paid, get free phones and service, internet, free christmas and birthday gifts for their kids, etc. The mom “homeschools” the kids and doesn’t work. The dad works menial labor jobs for six months then goes on unemployment for six months. They actually believe that is a normal way to live.

My dentist has volunteered with Random Access Medicine for a long time. He told me that he often has to pull every tooth in someone's mouth because there has been so much damage to the gums and so many broken teeth. He said that when they are done they take a quick casting before they wake up and they make dentures right there. They were originally founded to bring medical care to third world countries, but now they also serve Americans.

    Disturbing to see anyone's misfortune!
Each individual and each household is certainly unique.
It is not always easy to market anything.
If a household can put together a product there can be certain difficulties in establishing a business and maintaining a business.
There are a number of codes, ordinances, and laws just with establishing a business.
It seems like a number of agricultural concerns could be developed with some households even if just growing some things indoors. Conceivably some vegetables could be grown, mushrooms, and insects such as mealworms.
Of course, any ventures like this can be a steep challenge for many.
I do not know why people are not getting better medical insurance.
Thank you for your helpful and informative videos!

Medical insurance costs skyrocketed for the average person under the Affordable Care Act, (ACA) known as "Obama Care". Now people must pay $700-&1000.00 USD per month for premiums, and still have to pay for co-pays and medicines and meet minimum before the "insurance" will kick in and help. Before, the ACA, many paid less than half that before, and had better access to care. Obama care-what a joke. The only one that was helped was the insurance companies - by all the additional cash they get for doing less.

I live in Appalachia now and was born here, but have lived away for most of my life (from teen years - mid 30s).
When I first came back after years of living out West, the poverty was shocking. In most of the country, you’re considered wealthy if you own expensive properties, have large investments, huge savings, etc. In my corner of Appalachia, you are considered rich if you can afford to eat every day and heat your home in the winter.
I feel very economically privileged living where I do now, and I felt positively poor out on the west coast. It’s all about perspective.

I love Miss Sirenia's cheerful outlook even yhough I know it is probably only pretense or a facade. I have nothing myself and have no doubts that when my present landlord/roommate passes, he is 76 and in poor health, I will be homeless. 😅 already live in terror of that day. Unlike Sirenia though, I can only rarely exhibit happiness or an attitude of optimism. I am 61 years old and while life gifted me with above average intelligence and a natural talent to easily learn new things, it also threw an entire toolbox into the works, just for fun, by making sure I had a childhood that I would never ever be able to overcome with any degree of success. I know its my fault. But when I see others living as do I, barely able to eat, I have to wonder just what in the actual fxxk the world can feasibly expect us to be cheerful about. We have nothing. We never will. Thats hard to swallow.

Wow, that long line and people driving in desperate to seek medical help is heartbreaking.
In Australia, we have a pretty good public healthcare system, where you pay fairly minimum to see a GP- about US$45 per appointment or if you need a specific healthcare attention at a public hospital , you can go onto a waitlist if it's not emergency.
But you will be attended to.
And pretty minimal gov subsidised costs for hospital as well.
Of course you can opt to have private health insurance cover which gets you seen immediately at hospitals.
I do feel incredibly empathetic seeing this scene in the US as well as the incredible amounts of drug addiction and homelessness which appears so prevalent in the US now.
And the disparity of the ultra rich socio economic to the ultra poor in the US... Just incredible.
It needs to start from a top down approach for a significant change in socio economic crisis in the US.

The rich pay their taxes! Stop believing the lies. The problem is too much regulation. These coal mines need to reopen (modern technology can reduce black lung and environmental waste). Adult education programs need to be offered so our people can gain skills, experience and licenses they need for jobs. Kentucky needs to get rid of state income tax and find ways to entice energy corporations to return and start mining the coal and start drilling for all the untapped oil and natural gas. The forest can be responsibly logged. Just those three industries can bring people in which brings me back to education, plumbers, electricians, carpenters… It’s a big circle. Telling the rich to pay more than what they already do is assigning and does nothing but keep them from being the fuel to start the circle from turning. STOP LISTENING TO LIBERAL GIBBERISH AND EDUCATE YOURSELF!
