Unfortunately, people were struggling back then as they are now, but the news media intensifies it along with the internet. Panic sets in and then there is a rush and no one else has none. Back then people had gardens or container gardens and survived, it seems everyone is waiting for the free food. Granted not everyone can do this, this is where the unity of people get together and help others out. Community gardens that people go to and food grow and it is given to others to survive. West Virginians were poor even working in the mines, but trump took the jobs away but shutting the mines down. Last year he did this with some of the farmers. It may get worse and that is scary.

Since the bus route home would mean walking to the bus station which was aways away then being dropped off blocks from my home and having to walk - I told them I had to limit what I could take. They asked one of the female workers if ahe could drop me off and she agreed.. God bless them because they then piled on the food. Even on a move as short as 100 miles this can easily add up to THOUSANDS of dollars. So I ask you, are you going to save thousands of dollars and literally starve while doing it or are you going to feed your damn family? But the truth is coal mining belongs to a bygone area... it will not come back.

Now that the wage gap has increased, and caucasians are slipping from the middle class this is the result. Years attempting to neglect black people has created this problem for all people. Same thing as the opioid crisis, vilifying and spreading crack in the ghetto and not focusing on rehabilitation has created an atmosphere where everyone's children are dying. Affluent, white-collar, college-educated professionals who benefit from globalization took their place in the Democratic base. You can't turn your back on a party for decades and then be surprised when the party you abandoned moves on.

If you're in the Klan today, what party do you probably belong to? The old Democratic Party minus the economic leftism = the modern Republican Party. Same people. Same region. Same racism. Only the label changed.
What you're talking about is globalization/free trade which is a worldwide trend, not something Biden was personally responsible for. He was just another self-serving politician blowing with the wind. Neoliberalism, or selling out to capitalism, hijacked both parties. You had Thatcher and Blair, neoliberals. We had Reagan and Clinton. Blair and Clinton dismantled the left and replaced the left party with a socially liberal clone of the Tories/GOP. Both parties now stand for free trade and killing unions and screwing the white working class.

My experience moving to West Virginia for one year was very eye opening. Probably one of the most beautiful places to live, yet being stripped of all of its land and resources leaving the residents in the wasteland. I was certain these folks weren't trying hard enough and were "lazy". After all I had my MBA and 15 years of work experience..After applying for 39 jobs in 5 months I ended up a shift manager at a fast good chicken restaurant making $8 75 per hour and had to drive 35 miles each way to get there. To get groceries at just a Dollar General many folks woukd travel an hour or more. And my co workers considered me wealthy because I paid cash for my $20,000 house. There's so much pride and heritage tied to the mining industry that many people just can't let go and when they hear any threat to the industry it is a threat to their livelihood, even though the industry pillaged their people long ago. Many people have never even traveled out of their home County let alone out of the state so what some may see as ignorance I see as their reality based on their experience. I lasted a year and moved which unfortunately is not an option for many of these people. Go stay in a holler for a winter and watch folks drive to the river every day to pump water into cisterns in their truck to haul up the mountain home and you'll definitely be humbled.

Are the prices at Dollar General comparable to the prices for groceries at Dollar General in other states? Being so rural and remote it would definitely be helpful if students in West Virginia were taught gardening, animal husbandry and carpentry skills. Dollar General is not known for its produce. When Kaylyn was talking about not being able to feed herself a small adult and 3 small sized female children on $5/person'/day plus the pantry food, school lunches and perhaps school breakfasts and snacks, I took into account somewhat higher prices but since my budget is $6/person/day for 3 large adults without school lunches. I felt that it could easily be done. We eat extremely well although we don't order take out except an occasional pizza. I know many Latinos that can feed their families on half of what she is getting. If you are definetly going to remain that remote supplementing with gardens etc. would be necessary.

Strangers go to work, put many hours of labor in, maybe even get an education, in order to do that work, and then they faithfully pay their taxes, a part of which goes to pay for government programs that help strangers. @@Pipsquacky This video was mostly about food. If you listen carefully Kaylyn says she cannot feed 1 adult and 3 children on $5/person/day plus the food she gets from the food pantry. Her children no doubt receive free school lunches, and perhaps other school meals such as free breakfasts and snacks. The school my SIL works at receives all of those and she tells me most of the snacks probably 2/3 of the snack food is actually thrown right in the garbage. She is in the classroom so she doesn't know about waste for the breakfasts or the lunches. She also was part of the force that delivered the meals to the kids, the entire weeks worth of food with the buses a couple of times a week when the school was running remotely. Perhaps it is not that way in WV but it is in VA. Still it doesn't matter you can easily feed a person, especially a child, with $5/day. We eat very well on $6/person/day and we are all full size adults. With respect to food the government is doing a more than adequate job. She complains that now that she is working she receives less money for food. Okay, but isn't it her responsibility to feed her own children and the father's responsibility to feed them. Does she want to stop working and have the government pick up the complete responsibility. Now the government is assisting but she is partially at least fullfilling her responsibilities. There are needy people that absolutely cannot do that and could use those resources that otherwise would have gone to her.
This takes place in WV and is mostly concerning an impoverished white population there. I am not quite sure what you mean about walks of life, religion, gender, sexual orientation. Are there people not eligible for SNAP, food pantries, school lunch programs, etc. because of any of those? My SIL is latina and her students include many latinos and they are treated the same as the white children. Please explain.

So the average caloric intake for a female is 1500 calories and for 2000 a male. So if she previously had an eating habit of consuming 4000 calories a day and her body is used to this consumption, to go from 4000 to 1500 calories I can see how she is starving. There's nothing wrong to eat peanut butter and crackers as long as you get your daily caloric intake based on your living habits. They're just hungry for chips and fast food, that's all.

That kind of overweight didn't happen in the space of the pandemic, that's years of eating poorly, and spending the food budget on poor nutrition, fast prep foods. They need to pull out the WWII ration recipe pamphlets and figure out how to make nutritious meals from raw ingredients. A whole chicken comes in at about $1.30 per pound, whereas prepped chicken like chicken fingers or nuggets comes in at about $4.70 per pound. A whole head or bunch of lettuce comes in at about $1.50, whereas a bag of prepped lettuce can be $4.50. A whole bone in pork shoulder is about $5.00 a pound, whereas trimmed cuts of pork are about $6.00 - $8.00 a pound. Learning how to break down larger cuts of meat and whole vegetables and creating meals from those can save loads of money... they just have to be willing to learn to cut stuff up and cook from fresh.
Mary Jo says she sometimes has barely enough, yet she has enough to buy cigarettes at $8.00 a pack. People need to learn some discipline, give up those unhealthy habits that cost money they don't have to spare. They bandwagon onto the idea that they are victims and need to be bailed out, when they need to be innovative, use commonsense and learn from the past.

Considering sprouting seeds, micro greens, wheatgrass. I grow my lettuce and other greens at home. I suffer from my memory loss because I couldn’t remember how to garden. I started up again last year and it went well. This year I want to take it further and try more veggies. Seeds are cheap...get a little grow light. You can even save seeds from produce from the grocery store. My issue is the soil and the things needed to keep our pest. I’m doing the best I can. I am a single mom as well they were only giving me $16 a month. I have learned to let my kid eat and I eat broths and sometimes oatmeal. With the pandemic they are giving pandemic stamps. For the first time I feel like I can eat and afford water. Our water is contaminated with levels of radiation. Trying my best to course correct. Hang in there if you need a friend to talk to I don’t mind being a listening ear or passing some ideas to you. I’ve learned how to make products that saves me money around the house.

I'm glad they pointed out the 'Cliff' effect about them taking away food stamps as soon as you make more money (50 cents) That is no way to help people get ahead. You have to give people a chance to save and make it better for themselves. It's not like these raises are going up to $8,000- $10,000 a month overnight. You can be working 40 hours a week and still need food stamps. Working Poor is a real thing.

Yeah normally I’d say most poor people don’t deserve food stamps because they likely were too lazy to work or had a bad record, but people like this? This was not their fault. Not enough jobs, jobs pay too little, just everything is terrible. This is an example of poor people who deserve food stamps. We need to start making more manufacturing jobs instead of just giving all the jobs to China. I pray for these people

I’m unemployed but managed to save enough for a year for my young family. I gained weight since my first born was born 5 years ago, about 45 pounds. When I was breaking down my expenses and trying to figure out where I could save and/or generate some extra income by selling stuff, I realized my body fat was also currency. By cutting down 500 calories a day by cooking smaller portions and not eating off my kids’ dishes once they were full (hence they would finish their plates), I have been losing 1 to 2 pounds a week since April. I was also worried Covid would hit me harder if I got it since I’m overweight and to top it off, crime has tripled in my neighbourhood (shootings, carjackings etc), so I can’t readily take a walk with the kids, especially with school being all messed up. I’m now down about 25 pounds give or take and I estimate I saved about 200 to 300 dollars per month. You might be wondering if these people are starving and poor, why are they still so fat. I think from my own experiences it’s because they are eating a ton of processed food and the body stores it as visceral fat. Visceral fat is the fat around your organs and it takes I think, twice as much effort to get rid of. The people who are deemed “healthy” but look fat, generally don’t have as much visceral fat vs surface/skin fat (which is easier to burn off). Eventually though, if you cut calories watch the kind of quality you’re taking in, i.e. eat brown rice vs. Processed bread/pasta then I think you can tap into your fat storages as a means of saving money. I hope these people can find a way, I feel their pain for real.

Very well stated. Honestly, the woman that said she was a single mother with 3 small children and was getting $600 per month in food stamps, and it was not enough. That is incorrectly budgeting the money that you have. If you were to sit down and go through the weekly ads of your grocery stores. Sit down and write a list of the things that are needed and how to make meals from those things so you have them prepared and ready to go before going into the store and just pulling things as you go from shelves. Looking for the things that are on clearance or on sale, versus just pulling things from the shelf. Learning to coupon. I started couponing a few years ago. When the pandemic hit, I had everything stocked. I never came close to running out of toilet tissue, paper towels, detergent, or any other necessities. I get my cereals and juices for $.25-$.50 at times and stock on them when I get those deals with coupons. Yes, it takes some time, but you have to be able and willing to do it. Also, people saying that they pay how much for hamburger meat? If it’s not on sale and you can’t afford it, don’t buy it. Make substitutions. Pork chops for $.99, which you can make lots of different meals out of. Chicken drumsticks which you don’t have to fry, you can bake, and still make healthier meals with. These are just examples.

@@JJ-hw9dt Yes, I saw individual snack packs, cans of soda and pre-formed meat patties... I think one thing the US would do well to invest in is better education regarding food. You can buy a giant can of peaches and portion them into reusable containers for less; same for the meat. Soda is never a necessity.. You can buy a $3 tomato plant using SNAP benefits and grow plenty of tomatoes for one person, out of an old 5 gal bucket. Not all workarounds are possible for everybody, but at least some are, and every little bit counts.

That 50 cents raise does cause you to be disqualified for assistance. The biggest problem is basing it on gross income and if you have any medical insurance, dental, and vision insurance w/ employer add in the state&fed income tax then you're left with nothing to cover your rent and other expenses.

I live in WV. Thank god my family has work and does not receive assistance. One thing I have to say, these families who live in old coal towns with no work can transfer their section 8 certificate to a bigger city, different county with public transportation and more opportunities. I feed my family of 6 on $500 a month. I cook from scrap & We budget! If I were on welfare I'd get way more than that in FS. My biggest question is, how in the hell do poor people afford $6 for a pack of smokes, $10 - $30 for a pill to get high. I know not everyone gets high but this video just spoke about the opioid epidemic. WV has the most smokers than any other state and it's the 4th poorest. How is that possible? Prioritize! Bills, food, clothing, recreation. I know there's many who need the help and have slipped through the cracks but there's way more poor folks on the system who are able to spend $6 a day, or $180 a month on smokes, purchase alcohol & drugs but they don't have enough food. How's that happen?
