    Ollie ,THE only guitarist playing shifting tonal centre mixed phrasing within a rock context.Never equalled.

      True but.... I don't think those tonal centres fit as well as things Allan Holdsworth could come up with on the fly. Moving the same fast phrase around the fretboard shifts the tonal centre of the phrase by default, but it is tricky to argue that everything Ollie played made good harmonic sense. I do think Ollie was the first guitarist to try and play this fast, legato, in a rock setting.

    Love these guys. Splendid performer's. Mike Patto died very young. He worked in a Coal Mine in early day's. I'm not sure the cause of Death, but when I heard it broke my heart knowing that he wasn't on the Planet any more. Terrific Gentleman!

    Saw Patto many times in the early 70's and still have all their stuff on vinyl.Always been a huge,huge fan,Such a shame that they did not reach their full potential in their short career.
    Mike and Ollie sadley no longer with us and Clive in poor health.John Halsey has aways been one of my favourite drummers and I hope one day to get into his pub in Cambridge and shake his hand.

    We used to do lights at a club called 'Sisters' near Finsbury Park & Patto were sort of the house band. Ollie Halsall was an amazing guitarist....soo underrated, and a terrific vibes player too. Such a pity they never achieved the commercial success they deserved... so often the way with brilliant live bands.

      Mike died in the late 1970s (cancer).
      Ollie died of a heroin overdose in 1991.
      Clive Griffiths (bass) was in the band van with JOhn Halsey (drums) when it was hit by a car. He suffered memory loss and does not remember his time in Patto. His health is bad at this point.
      John Halsey lived out of his van for years and now owns a pub.

    Patto were special! Live, they were always up for it. Apparently, every time they played on the same bill as Ten Years After, Alvin Lee would always be standing in the wings watching Ollie! Trying to work out how he played so fast. Ollie didn't use all that 'play one note and hammer the next 8' stuff! Guess he never figured it out eh?

      Hi Joshua - I was playing guitar for Jody Grind - with Tim Hinkley (organ) and Pete Gavin (drums) - I remember Ollie inviting me over to dinner with his South African wife Monica, they lived in Gibbs Green, Edgware - Ollie asked me "What do want for dinner Berns? - I replied "Sausages ". Back then we used to hang out a lot, Ollie was great fun to be with - he came over to my flat in Hendon and we did a painting together _ I gave a photo of it to Barry Monks who has archived a lot of information about Ollie - I never found out why he was called Ollie, his actual name was Peter Halsall and he came from Southport, as did Clive Griffiths, who I stood in on bass for on this European tour, as you can see I was using his Fender Mustang "short-scale". After Mike passed, John and Clive played with Joe Brown for a while - then John played with the Rutles, I played guitar on a few tracks on the album Archaeology - Mike, Ollie and Clive, are now elsewhere, John is still with us - and still bashing the tubs ! I am still at it, recording stuff at home for my own you tube channel - I do get out occasionally to play - next Tuesday I will be at the Oddfellows pub in Kings Langley jamming with some mates

    andy they didnt play on the same bill they were a support act as for alvin he is still voted in top100 polls so why would he be in awe of a jobbing guitarist who i rate but there a lot of talented musicians and only a select few break away from the pack to be imortalised and in football terms ollie would never be a premeiership player

    • @Daionzrip
      @Daionzrip 6 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      If they were the opening band, (and they were) then they played on the same bill. The football analogy is pure stupidity too. Alvin was a fan of Ollie and knew full well that he was light years behind Halsall. Lee could never have cut it as Holdsworth's successor in a band like Tempest. Do yourself a favor and do a little homework before posting in the future.

      What's more: Allan and Ollie were friends - they both had things they offered as guitar players that, for a brief time you had two of the best players on the planet in the same band at the same time. Timing wasn't right. There's a bootleg of Ollie and Allan playing solos on a slow tune and those guys were built for speed.
