I think that the series has huge themes of making small changes to yourself over time until you have almost nothing left of your original self, whether that be memories, body, or personality. The ethical dilemma of whether or not its for the better to let someone go if they become too far gone and accepting that they have become a different person. The classic Odysseus Paradox in its more ethical form.
This is by far the best infinite animation I've seen I loved how they used houseki no kuni for it because IT WORKS with the manga pages and the many forms that phos took.

In terms of the trauma and the environment that has inflicted you, experiences inflicted by other people, events or things. And it involves strong emotions. But I have to ask is it really losing yourself? Or a new part of yourself When a person goes through trauma, severe or minimal, we feel "lost" or "empty" in a sense we could also feel sad, bargain, angry, or depression. The brain tries to cope by adding a "new" personality to help ourselves. Like a new person and most of the time we do not like it, one of the reasons why is because we've changed and we don't like this change we feel that we aren't our old self or what we used to be, we feel that the past us were much more contempt and happy and where everything was just right, An example is when we were children, no duties and responsibilities, pure innocence and happiness (describes phos) we constantly feel that our "new" self are one of the reasons for our suffering and that's why we try to get rid of it. Hide it. Ignore it. We think of it as something bad, most of the time we just bury these thoughts and feelings we get so we don't get reminded of it all the time which is also one of this anime's theme. Ignorance. Just because you choose to ignore it doesn't mean things are ok, ignoring it means it is hidden in plain sight but deep down, in the back of our mind, we all know that we feel these things (when the moon gems try to ignore the suffering that phos is enduring during the last 10,000 years) But then, it's a part of us that just wants to protect us, that wants to help us, to protect us from harm so bad things won't happen anymore, it's part of the brain's defense mechanism, Whether it be being ignorant of things, (like the moon gems enjoying life on the moon knowing full well phos is suffering) this happens because what if you don't wanna care or know too much anymore so you won't get hurt. Even a self-harming one. The physical type, that physical pain just wants to protect you from the emotional and mental pain life throws at us. So don't beat yourself up too much over your "negative traits" Take the time to learn about yourself and appreciate it, be grateful that you yourself has tried it's best to help you. I'm not saying these traits are good as these can still indeed affect you in a negative way but my point is that these are just new parts of you that are trying to protect you from that suffering and pain. That's why instead of trying to repress these feelings and them them erupt. Find the time to think and appreciate yourself, accept these traits and then let go, because once you accept these you will find yourself to better improve your life and as an individual. And once you do, these "traits" of us no longer serve a purpose in our life because we are healed. I guess TLDR is it's not about hiding a part of yourself it's about accpeting it and letting go, on a new journey to find your own true meaning of happiness, fueled by you. So again I have to ask, I'm curious on what your opinions may be Do we lose a part of ourselves or do we gain new parts of ourself?
ive never read the manga, only the anime, so i'll probably be wrong here but i feel really bad for phos, like, he changes his body just so that he can fit in, become stronger, and fight with others and the only thing that is actually left of his original body is his torso, i find it really sad and meaningful ngl
