- I've been thinking about this since day one. The Elektron Model:Samples, while totally a capable and affordable sample groovebox, the plain white design didn't really speak to me. I've been wanting to give it a colourful makeover from day one. So here it is.

Thanks mate! I had a lot of fun doing this, even if it was really exhausting. I had over 5 hours of footage. I probably recorded a little over half of the process. But this is stuff I love to do, so I'm definitely gonna do more.

This is one of the most exciting synth meta videos. The incandescent orange of the lights looks great with the colors.

Fantastic result! I've also toyed with doing some customizing as well. Drums, guitars, basses get a lot of custom looks added, rarely a keyboard, etc.

Brilliant man... was worried about the labels but seems you were ok with creating your own. Loved this. Oh and your soundtrack was equally amazing..
btw.. didn't see the final laquering phase... how was that?
Thanks Neil! I was creating so many sketches for the labels. Keeping the white, making rounded little bubbles etc. But in the end I just painted over it and wrote some of the labels back by hand.
By the time I sprayed the final varnish on it was in the middle of the night, and no light. I just wanted to be done with it and didn't even film it. Next time!

Hahaha - Sick minds think alike! I watched a few videos of the Model:Samples and Model:Cycles and thought what a dreadful color they gave these units, Their marketing team said one day "Hey, I got an idea! What if we gave the customer a sheet of stickers to liven the look up?" and after a long draw on the marijuana cigarette, the CEO said "Sure, but let's not get carried away here boys, let's keep all the sticker just black. No color!" (Then he exhaled) And then True Cuckoo showed up! I used to be a published cartoonist and I've built guitars for the past 10 years, so I'll be damned when this unit comes in today that I'll keep it "Refrigerator Color" like you said! Love the video man - my daughter and I have become big fans of yours over the past few months! Thanks!

I love it! I bet you’ll find yourself grabbing the Model Samples over similar samplers now, even though it is a bit less flexible than say the Octatrack and Digitakt. I’ll have to brainstorm ways to practice things like this on plastic without the pressure of only have one shot!

What a cool idea, and it looks awesome too!. I've actually been considering doing this with a few of my synths, but taking the leap and putting marker to case is always scary. Maybe this is the push I needed.
Thanks! Yeah I know exactly what you're saying. I have been thinking about doing this for so many years. Committing is a bit scary, because there's no turning back. But in the end, once it becomes a real object that you have customised, it becomes so much cooler than all of the sketches combined!
Another way you could have done this is is by printing your image on a celluloid and use a projector to size it on the samples. Very nice though. Your channel is always inspiring.
Your voice is a unique sound by itself, hope you are making good use of it :)

Very nice! You probably haven't seen it, but I did a redesign of my Minilogue some years back. An altogether different beast, but I covered it with a transparent adhesive vinyl, before gluing on stuff and painting it. Obviously, especially the glued parts, didn't stick very well, so I used another layer of transparent vinyl over the top to hold and protect everything, and it actually worked really well. Did a video showcasing it.
Point being, if I ever want to get rid of it, I can just peel it off, supposedly with a minimum of residue.

I'm glad you did the teardown. I used to like modding my nintendos and stuff but I'd always like to check a video of someone else opening the box first :D Definitely want to illustrate one of these once my current project is done.
