    Watch out storing the pool shock! If you forget about it and it's near anything metal it will destroy it. I've heard of prepper losing very expensive knives that way. It is also a strong oxidizer in in theory could start a fire. Just use some common sense storing at keep it dry and in plastic or glass with a plastic lid. It will eat metal no matter what. I keep mine away from the house

      @@johannes3153 In the term 'Bloody German!', (with which you're no doubt familiar!) 'German' is a 'proper noun' and must therefore be capitalised; unless, of course it's used as an ajective, as in 'german sausage'. 'bloody' isn't, and should NOT be capitalised. (Unless it's the first word in a sentence, in which case it must be capitlised, even though it's actually an adjective in drag. I hope that makes it clearer for you. ' I', (note capital, though not a proper noun: ie 'common' noun, but at the start of a sentence) was born in Germany, and spoke it exclusively until I started school here in Oz, and was perfectly fluent in the idiom of about 40 other languages spoken by the 3 million refugees (should that be a capital 'r'?) that were brought out here post-war. But nontheless I (!?) was for years amazed that my mother, who never went to school here, was able to communicate in THREE languages: German, English and whatever it was she used when things were serious. Upon investigation I was informed it was 'hochdeutsch'. It was surprising how quickly I picked it up (sans the details like placement of capitals) but I never did figure out how it could be 'Sumstag' (alternatively 'samstag'...or?) where I lived but 'Sonnabend' just across the river. A weird mob, the Germans; little wonder they get easily confused: (linguistically almost English in some respects!) Though I DID learn 'proper German' in my matriculation year of high-school; but by then nobody was speaking German any longer. (Nor English, for that matter!) Does the multinational AARGH!! mean anything to you?🙃

    Confused how the MSR would become illegal, but you were correct, I have not seen that device before. I actually took a 2 week course too on water purification, although my favorite back then was using a UV reverse osmosis device. They seem to be rather popular in Upstate New York.
    Not many people, other than you and I that is, have AC to DC converters around my neck of the woods, err, streets. Being in engineering and being a technician, I am the exception. I think that if that device also had a AC to DC converter it would be more popular here in the states, but for traveling, what it comes with is fine.

    It is called Electrolysis (The blue machine). to make your own just use a unregulated DC 12v power supply. make a negative iron plate, a positive iron plate and submerge the salt and water solution in a container with the metal not touching plates and you got that gas. Doing the same thing with sodium carbonate creates hydrogen gas and is also a good way to remove rust on metal things.

More fresh water than any other country, we produce millions of tons of wheat, canola, corn and other grains which helps feed the world. Unfortunately it isn't the only problem we have, but as long as we keep our boarders guarded it will probably be a better place to live than where you are. You’re absolutely right about the gas mask. It’s hard to breathe when you were doing anything strenuous or exerting yourself from world in a couple of minutes at a time. When I was in the service even though we weren’t required to run while wearing them, we were taught to do short bursts of movement and pause to catch our breath in between so that we didn’t black out or get out of breath. Breathing in a long deep breath through your nose and breathing out your mouth also helps to regulate the amount of air you take in Of course you have to do the integrity check on the filters to make sure that you have a good seal on the mask first.

    Been a gear geek for years, to anyone genuinely investing in CBRN, there are a litany of factors that can factor into the efficacy of your equipment. Beyond the common sense stuff like storage and time to apply, certain filters block certain agents, most NATO filters will stop all major CBRN elements from inhalation, but most agents will effect and penetrate the skin. If you are DEAD SET on that particular contingency, invest in decom or barrier wipes, or if you can obtain them outside of a military setting, KANA and NAAK injectors. Your mask and PPE if used correctly will protect you, but exposure to nerve agents etc through skin exposure can be lethal within an hour or less. Not to spook people but as a fellow prepper, CBRN is one of those preps where it’s all or nothing. Don’t forget either, you can’t eat or drink a MOPP suit 😂

      No, probably not. Seawater varies in salinity around the world, averaging about 35 Parts Per Thousand or about 35g(7teaspoons) of dissolved salts per liter of water. That's weaker than the brine solution required by this unit. Secondly, seawater doesn't just contain dissolved NaCl, but also things like Magnesium, Potassium, Calcium, Bromine, Sulphates, etc. You could try if you were hard-up, but these factors would likely reduce the effectiveness. You might end up with too weak of a Sodium Hypochlorite solution that wouldn't fully disinfect your water. As CP points out, with seawater, you'd just be better off to go with a still; boiling for long enough kills all pathogens.

    • @mfuchs123
      @mfuchs123 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      So, you could distill the water, and recover the salt. Separately till you got the proper ratios of sodium to water to make the brine? You can totally make sea salt easily in your backyard. A friend of mine here in Newfoundland does it and then cures fish with that he uses to make an ancent Roman fish sauce that seems similar to Worcester sauce.

    I think for water, having a gravity fed reverse osmosis system is better than a chlorine maker, and will probably last longer too. These can produce 75 or more gallons per day and operate for a year before needing new filters - of course, they waste a lot of water in the process, so this only works if you have access to an abundant fresh water supply (like a river or lake or captured rain water) and buy enough spare filters to last several times longer than your estimated worst case SHTF scenario. Alternately, you could simply store several gallons of bleach. Each gallon of bleach can purify about 4400 gallons of water. A chlorine maker is actual a very simple device, so simply having printed instructions of how to make one can be your back up back up.
