It means that 99% of the people can speak and understand English. Believe it or not, some people can speak multiple languages so just because most people speak and understand English in Wales, doesn’t mean they can’t speak Welsh. Didn’t think I would have to explain that, but next time I’ll be sure to elaborate 🤦🏽♂️
It's not surprising, Welsh has been taught as a optional second language in our school until September 2021 when it is finally being made a compulsory subject. At one point speaking Welsh was even outlawed by parliament
In my school it's mandatory to learn Welsh, well I live in Gwynedd like everyone here speaks Welsh and it is my first language but I know English better but I know Welsh fluently

It’s hilarious because every other country in the world has some animal that actually lives in their country, that they can see out in the wild and point to and say “That’s our country” about, and protect the ecosystem for it and lead conservation efforts and look out for it, as their national animal... Actually, England having a lion as their national animal is pretty silly, too-they definitely don’t live there, either, except in zoos-so I guess the three of them deserve each other.
What bothers me is that people apparently think “Scottish” is a language. There are two living languages from Scotland: the Germanic language Scots and the Goidelic language Scottish Gaelic. I live in the Rhondda. I noticed the auto correct nearly put it as Rhonda which is a name derived from where I live so if you're called that, you're named after the place where I'm from. Only it's pronounced differently, but close enough

Thank goodness I have got much better at spotting difference between Canadians and US so I can avoid upsetting them. Canadian’s have a strange o sound . Watch out for say “about” which sounds like “a-boat”. To avoid upset, when in doubt, I go for the Canadian option. That avoids upsetting a Canadian, and who wants to upset family, and I think US secretly want to be Canadian so they are flattered.
I'm from Wales and we have a lot of castles, rolling hills, beautiful countryside, history and loads of sheep. A fun fact is that Welsh is one of the oldest European languages. If you ever want to visit Wales and see how beautiful it can be, go to West Wales in Pembrokeshire. The beaches and countryside there is stunning.

I live a few miles from Pembroke, and you are so right, fun fact, On Freshwater West beach some 5 miles from where I live the scene from Harry Potter was filmed, the one where the external Shell house was filmed, where Dobby the House Elf died and was "buried" on top of the sand dunes there, there is a pile of stone put there by fans to commemorate the scene. Some scenes from Robin Hood, (the Russel Crowe one) was also filmed there, (the beach scenes near the end of the movie, you would not know it though to watch the film as they had filmed some cliffs from a few miles up the coast the bunged that footage as a backdrop to the beach. Quite a few other films and tv series have used the local area to film stuff. :)

@@Josh-cm9jw I hadn't noticed but you're right. I don't have an accent and speak the language. My wife has a Cardiffian/Llanrumney accent but doesn't speak the language. There are several accents in Wales, though. Interestingly, you're more likely to hear accents from Welsh-speaking farming communities. That's primarily because their English isn't that good so some farmers actually struggle to speak it properly.

I love Wales. I'm from England; just over the bridge, but spent a lot of time in Wales as a kid. We used to holiday in a little bay called Parrog in Pembrokeshire every summer. It's a beautiful country and most people are very warm and friendly (even to the English). Also, when I was at school, half of my teachers were Welsh. Many used to travel over the bridge to teach, or moved over for the work. The first Severn bridge was completed when my parents were kids. It transformed Bristol. Nowadays, there are thousands of Welsh people living and working this side of the bridge, and vice-versa. Also, for those who don't know the meaning of the long town name....."Literally translated, the long form of the name means: "[The] church of [St.] Mary (Llanfair) [of the] pool (pwll) of the white hazels (gwyn gyll) near to [lit. "over against"] (go ger) the fierce whirlpool (y chwyrn drobwll) [and] the church of [St.] Tysilio (Llantysilio) of the red cave (-ogo[f] goch)"."

He recorded the Khasi language in Roman script, and the inscription on his gravestone calls him "The founding father of the Khasi alphabets and literature". And He was the founder of the Presbyterian Church of india(Fomerly Welsh Calvinistic Methodist Church) Every year on the 22nd of June we Celebrate Thomas Jones Day.

I'm from Wales and to be fair some strong questions there. If anyone is planning on visiting the beautiful country, look at travelling around Snowdonia region, tonnes of mountain climbing, lakes, waterfalls just very aesthetically pleasing, plus more people there use the native tongue so you'll learn a few things.

Welsh speaker living in Bridgend, South Wales here. Awesome & hilarious video man! Fun fact for you brawd: The Welsh settled in Patagonia, South America in 1865 and there is a Welsh speaking community there to this day, with Welsh schools, signs and so on. It's fascinating. My cousin from the Rhondda Valleys visited there on a school trip and sat in on a Patagonian Welsh lesson. She's so lucky!
I'm from the coast where Welsh is the first language, I spent my childhood there because my mums family is from there but I moved later to England. I rememeber learning about Patagonia when I was in primary school 😂

great vid👍 it's practically an initiation test to prove you are truly welsh to be able to say the long town name on the spot😂 plus the country is beautiful so if there are any tourists visiting the UK, this is definitely one of the places to leave go to (so you don't just stay in London)

The best thing about being Welsh is, unlike us, the other UK nations all have a stereotype which Americans think of them as. We just go under the radar (despite many huge Welsh celebrities being present in US culture).
This was actually super wholesome. Most of the time Americans don't look great in these videos but I like that you didn't try to make them look stupid and just showed us what they do know. I was impressed most of them knew Wales is in the UK and knew roughly where that was on a map! I love that the one girl pointed to New South Wales in Australia and the girl who randomly guessed almost everything right about Wales 😂

I have been to Cymru and would love to go back. Cardiff is a cool city with a lot going for it. Snowdonia is still on the bucket list, along with Caernarfon and Anglesey. I am a bit too old to try climbing Crib Goch, but otherwise would love to do some hiking around there.
And famous for beautiful singing voices, poetry. Glorious rolling hills and mountains, vast seascapes, wonderful Welsh cakes, and delicious custard tarts.
I'm welsh and that was a good video james. Please come to wales we are a very proud nation and love our rugby and our people. I'd say the welsh are the most welcoming nation in the uk. When you come to wales plz visit west wales it is so beautiful. And that's where you will find the welsh language being spoken mostly.
Very nice Vid! I'm pleased that they all 'had a go' at the place names. The funny thing is that after you've learnt how to say some of the letters like 'LL' and 'CH' , Welsh is easy to say as it's almost completely phonetic, (and yes, I can say 'LlanfairPwll.............. from memory! )

There is a film called how green is my valley it was made in 1941 and filmed in California and its all about a welsh mining community wales was built on mining and industry...fox wanted to film it in wales but couldnt because of the war going on so they built a replica welsh villiage its an old film but I recommend watching it if you want to find out more of our culture..diolch

Let's see, what do I know about Wales ... I know Swansea in addition to Cardiff. Unsurprisingly, I know Dylan Thomas. Coal mining, and the Aberfan tragedy in the 1960s. Legendary birthplace of King Arthur; actual birthplace of King Henry VII. David Lloyd George. Welsh freedom-fighters like Llewelyn I, Llewelyn II, and Owen Glendower. And, for some reason, all the curling stones that Scots use are actually made from stone quarried in Wales.
James thank you for showing Houston's name sign after showing the skyline! I wish I could recognize more skyline's, but there are only a few I know for sure. Other than the geography, I was impressed that people knew as much as they did. I know two people that live in Wales (but they don't talk about it much), saw a few pics from someone that hiked there, and I learned a little cultural context from an episode of the Crown. This was an interesting pop quiz. Got the national animal wrong...I thought it would be the wooly sheep, but they went mythical like Scotland.

My only visit to Wales was in 1966. When we crossed the border from England at Chepstow, we realized we were in a different country--the architecture, signage, etc. was different from England. We went on to Cardiff, Aberystwyth, and then through North Wales before crossing back into England near Birkenhead.
Wales is a beautiful compact small proud peaceful ancient nation, gorgeous mountains beaches lakes and rivers. Got a parliament, many ancient laws, language , culture.....Endless castles , strong scientific base, at the heart of the industrial revolution, shipping, rich in minerals, coal slate tin copper etc...known as the land of song too world class singers musicians, well educated, loads of great actors, writers like dylan thomas... I highly recommend a visit

Though, as a Cymro [welsh man] I think the national animal was a trick question as you had me thinking sheep [as Welsh lamb is considered the best lamb in the world] - but of course - Y Ddraig Goch [The Red Dragon] is our national animal and she is beautiful as she is ferocious [it's a female dragon incase you didn't know! Hell hath no fury like a welsh woman scorned!]. Though, Cymru has had a profound impact upon the Americas where I noticed you're at the Washington monument! If you just took people to the monument you would see our language: Cymraeg [Welsh]! "" which means "My language, my land, my nation, Wales - Wales forever" [we're a poetic bunch - quite musical too as we're known as the land of song!]. Some fun facts: A handful of the founding fathers are of direct Welsh descent - where William Penn is also of direct Welsh descent and before Pennsylvannia was named in ode to him - a french king veto'd the state being called "New Wales" - though it actually has some Welsh place names [like Bryn Mawr - translates to "Very Big Hill"]. Where our history of interactions begins 300 years before Columbus with Madog ap Wledig. I hope you found this interesting, and that you one day come on over to see it for yourselves! I advise planning it for the 3-4 weeks of sun we get and using one word where-ever you can - Diolch [pronounced: Dee-ol-CH* - Say the composer BaCH < that CH / CGH sound and not a 'chu' sound of an english CH]. Thank goodness I have got much better at spotting difference between Canadians and US so I can avoid upsetting them. Canadian’s have a strange o sound . Watch out for say “about” which sounds like “a-boat”. To avoid upset, when in doubt, I go for the Canadian option. That avoids upsetting a Canadian, and who wants to upset family, and I think US secretly want to be Canadian so they are flattered.
I'm from Wales and we have a lot of castles, rolling hills, beautiful countryside, history and loads of sheep. A fun fact is that Welsh is one of the oldest European languages. If you ever want to visit Wales and see how beautiful it can be, go to West Wales in Pembrokeshire. The beaches and countryside there is stunning.

The Welsh language is something like 4,500 years old.
I live a few miles from Pembroke, and you are so right, fun fact, On Freshwater West beach some 5 miles from where I live the scene from Harry Potter was filmed, the one where the external Shell house was filmed, where Dobby the House Elf died and was "buried" on top of the sand dunes there, there is a pile of stone put there by fans to commemorate the scene.
Some scenes from Robin Hood, (the Russel Crowe one) was also filmed there, (the beach scenes near the end of the movie, you would not know it though to watch the film as they had filmed some cliffs from a few miles up the coast the bunged that footage as a backdrop to the beach.
Quite a few other films and tv series have used the local area to film stuff. :)

One thing about the language, you said 99% of people speak English that is true but for a lot of people like 28% it's actually there second language with Welsh being there first

There's a weird flip in Wales, where people who have the accent rarely speak the language, but most who speak the language rarely have the accent
@@Josh-cm9jw I hadn't noticed but you're right. I don't have an accent and speak the language. My wife has a Cardiffian/Llanrumney accent but doesn't speak the language. There are several accents in Wales, though. Interestingly, you're more likely to hear accents from Welsh-speaking farming communities. That's primarily because their English isn't that good so some farmers actually struggle to speak it properly.

I love Wales. I'm from England; just over the bridge, but spent a lot of time in Wales as a kid. We used to holiday in a little bay called Parrog in Pembrokeshire every summer. It's a beautiful country and most people are very warm and friendly (even to the English). Also, when I was at school, half of my teachers were Welsh. Many used to travel over the bridge to teach, or moved over for the work. The first Severn bridge was completed when my parents were kids. It transformed Bristol. Nowadays, there are thousands of Welsh people living and working this side of the bridge, and vice-versa. Also, for those who don't know the meaning of the long town name....."Literally translated, the long form of the name means: "[The] church of [St.] Mary (Llanfair) [of the] pool (pwll) of the white hazels (gwyn gyll) near to [lit. "over against"] (go ger) the fierce whirlpool (y chwyrn drobwll) [and] the church of [St.] Tysilio (Llantysilio) of the red cave (-ogo[f] goch)"."

I'm from Wales and to be fair some strong questions there. If anyone is planning on visiting the beautiful country, look at travelling around Snowdonia region, tonnes of mountain climbing, lakes, waterfalls just very aesthetically pleasing, plus more people there use the native tongue so you'll learn a few things.

The Welsh settled in Patagonia, South America in 1865 and there is a Welsh speaking community there to this day, with Welsh schools, signs and so on. It's fascinating.
My cousin from the Rhondda Valleys visited there on a school trip and sat in on a Patagonian Welsh lesson. She's so lucky!
Btw, it's about 5% of the population of Wales that speak Welsh on a daily basis.
I'm from the coast where Welsh is the first language, I spent my childhood there because my mums family is from there but I moved later to England. I rememeber learning about Patagonia when I was in primary school 😂

The best thing about being Welsh is, unlike us, the other UK nations all have a stereotype which Americans think of them as. We just go under the radar (despite many huge Welsh celebrities being present in US culture).
This was actually super wholesome. Most of the time Americans don't look great in these videos but I like that you didn't try to make them look stupid and just showed us what they do know. I was impressed most of them knew Wales is in the UK and knew roughly where that was on a map! I love that the one girl pointed to New South Wales in Australia and the girl who randomly guessed almost everything right about Wales 😂

I have been to Cymru and would love to go back. Cardiff is a cool city with a lot going for it. Snowdonia is still on the bucket list, along with Caernarfon and Anglesey. I am a bit too old to try climbing Crib Goch, but otherwise would love to do some hiking around there.
And famous for beautiful singing voices, poetry. Glorious rolling hills and mountains, vast seascapes, wonderful Welsh cakes, and delicious custard tarts.

There is a film called how green is my valley it was made in 1941 and filmed in California and its all about a welsh mining community wales was built on mining and industry...fox wanted to film it in wales but couldnt because of the war going on so they built a replica welsh villiage its an old film but I recommend watching it if you want to find out more of our culture..diolch

James thank you for showing Houston's name sign after showing the skyline! I wish I could recognize more skyline's, but there are only a few I know for sure. Other than the geography, I was impressed that people knew as much as they did. I know two people that live in Wales (but they don't talk about it much), saw a few pics from someone that hiked there, and I learned a little cultural context from an episode of the Crown. This was an interesting pop quiz. Got the national animal wrong...I thought it would be the wooly sheep, but they went mythical like Scotland.

My only visit to Wales was in 1966. When we crossed the border from England at Chepstow, we realized we were in a different country--the architecture, signage, etc. was different from England. We went on to Cardiff, Aberystwyth, and then through North Wales before crossing back into England near Birkenhead.
Wales is a beautiful compact small proud peaceful ancient nation, gorgeous mountains beaches lakes and rivers. Got a parliament, many ancient laws, language , culture.....Endless castles , strong scientific base, at the heart of the industrial revolution, shipping, rich in minerals, coal slate tin copper etc...known as the land of song too world class singers musicians, well educated, loads of great actors, writers like dylan thomas... I highly recommend a visit

Cymru [pronounced come-ree - aka Wales] is a beautiful country with something for everyone - with a rich tapestry of history and culture - where we're more than happy to share with you our lovely bit of the world! Though, as a Cymro [welsh man] I think the national animal was a trick question as you had me thinking sheep [as Welsh lamb is considered the best lamb in the world] - but of course - Y Ddraig Goch [The Red Dragon] is our national animal and she is beautiful as she is ferocious [it's a female dragon incase you didn't know! Hell hath no fury like a welsh woman scorned!]. Though, Cymru has had a profound impact upon the Americas where I noticed you're at the Washington monument! If you just took people to the monument you would see our language: Cymraeg [Welsh]! "" which means "My language, my land, my nation, Wales - Wales forever" [we're a poetic bunch - quite musical too as we're known as the land of song!]. Some fun facts: A handful of the founding fathers are of direct Welsh descent - where William Penn is also of direct Welsh descent and before Pennsylvannia was named in ode to him - a french king veto'd the state being called "New Wales" - though it actually has some Welsh place names [like Bryn Mawr - translates to "Very Big Hill"]. Where our history of interactions begins 300 years before Columbus with Madog ap Wledig. I hope you found this interesting, and that you one day come on over to see it for yourselves! I advise planning it for the 3-4 weeks of sun we get and using one word where-ever you can - Diolch [pronounced: Dee-ol-CH* - Say the composer BaCH < that CH / CGH sound and not a 'chu' sound of an english CH]. I was born in the Rhondda Valley South Wales but now live in Penderyn, Brecon Beacons national park, we get a lot of visitors from the US here, they are always welcome .
