Barrel grips are really great with a coping foot as it's much easier to hold a barrel grip upside down when coping moulding profiles.

Good review. Made my mind up about which one to get. Top handle one looks good, yet why did they not put a trigger on it! OMG that feels like a big omission.

More control with a barrel grip not only upside down manoeuvering is limited with a D shaped handle jigsaw. Over 46 years of cabinet making using jigsaws daily myself. Barrel grip has changed the jigsaw use greatly experiment using the machine full time for a week in daily use will change your mind I'm certain, it's a game changer barrel grips. High quility blades make a huge diference also to the accuracy of the cut.

Nice review, answering my question about the difference between this two machines.
Switched to this 18V system of Makita half a year ago and am very happy with the shear power of the brushless motors in this tools :-)
It's very tempting to collect machines around the 18V Li-Ion batteries and charger; Makita has done a great job to promote this :-)

I've had this Makita LXT system for almost 12 yrs now and I just keep adding tools and batteries. The only thing that I have had to eventually replace in all that time is my original 12yr old,3.0 AH batteries! Its been incredible cordless, I previously used Panasonic and Bosch but that was the old NIMH and NiCad stuff.

I thought my new jigsaw was broken when you put the trigger on it didn’t sound fast enough until it was into the workpiece
Something to get used to I suppose as I’m delighted with all my other makita tools 👍🏻

The big deal with the d-handle is that you can adjust the speed with the trigger for delicate scribing work and the like. So you can ease in and out of the cut. The d-handle is more versatile in that respect plus you can normally use it as barrel grip as well just lock in the trigger - normally you would use it upside down for better visibility and cleaner cut on the upside. At least that the preferred method in northern europe. Of course if your on a construction site rough cutting plywood non of this really matters ;- ) - also if you need to do a lot of back bevelling and angle cutting, getting out the allen key each time gets tiresome. Some of the bosch models have a decent quick release for adjusting the angel (the gst 135 is specifically well designed in this area, the 140 is crap...) test before you buy, lots of stuff to look out for...

Nope, D handle DJV 182 has just a simple switch trigger, and the variable speed control is separated only from the weel.
DJV 180 with brushes has variable speed trigger, but is slower, 2800 vs 3500 rev.
Brushless parts are wey more expensive, electronic driver and stator cost like a new tool, so I avoid brushless.

I'm a Chippy, if you know your tools you'd know you really don't need a brushless motor in a jigsaw, it's not a tool you use to do continual heavy work. Not only that but if your going to make a new brushless jigsaw don't put a stupid safety start on it that actually makes the tool more dangerous to use. And put a variable trigger on it so tradesman can alter cutting speed by depressing trigger. This is simple stuff makita.... ask the trades what they want out of a tool.... I'd have a word with your r&d department. Someone should get the sack for developing that tool, they are totally out of touch with their end user requirements.
And yes, I'm a makita fan boy....

Batteries last longer is their sales pitch, and no on is arguing your point but the features installed in the 182 do help reduce noise and vibration. After suffering from trying to use an old jig saw on a major job, I tried one of these and it was like night and day it was so user friendly. Don t knock it until you've tried it pal. Also being an old codger I appreciated the much easier to see sight line. We still need all these companies to address the important deadly dust issue with some sort of hose attachment.

I use my jigsaw religiously cause I don’t have a scroll or bandsaw when I cut stuff so yes that brushless motor has its place for some of us still

Brushless motors don't only extend battery life they extend the machines motors. life. Using a high quality brushless jigsaw is a game changer to this tool. Keep your cheap tools when high quility work is expected invest in costly quility tools Makita tools never fail in my 46 years of daily use, as a cabinet maker.

I turned away from these saws dues to the no load feature. It would annoy the shit out of me for small intricate cuts where you have to cut then back of and cut again to nibble away material.
They should have had an option to turn the no laod option off.

The on off for the barrel grip is a bad design. Bosh has had the barrel grip for well over 20yrs and the placement of the switch is convenient while holding can hit with thumb.

I had the 14.4 model d grip and now have the t style grip 18v. Both good machines but I have a problem with both,
The blades are slightly twisted when locked
This seems to be a problem of the locking system.
    This turns with locking.
    Did anyone noticed this.
I looked at the shop at the latest model and he had the same.

Worse machine I've tried that d handle jigsaw, the slow start is pure bollocks and a waste of time. Useless for fine work as it doesn't know its started and then when it takes of it goes f'ing nuts. Crap for coping and there is no variable speed control. It's like makita tried to do something different as a statement, all it says is buy dewalt or bosch if you want a decent jigsaw. I,m a makita fan but this one can piss right off.
