The joke before it became obvious of their other intentions was that the game looked like it was filled with the stunt doubles or Dollar store knockoffs of the MCU version. That's the problem with even trying to base your characters off of actual people playing certain parts when you can just do what rivals did and make awesome original versions. Avengers always look like a soulless cash grab anyway.

Even the MCU version - closest thing to "real" you can get, look better than the Avengers game. I don't think anyone would complain if they just copy-pasted Robert Downie Jr.'s face and body structure on Iron Man or Chris Hemsworth on Thor because it's so synonymous at this point.
I’ve been literally saying that for years. For some reason here in the west, they value photorealism and realistic characters over art, beauty and artistic expression. This is why every female character that now comes out in a western AAA game looks awful and angry.
What happened is obvious: Square Enix tried to go for a realistic look to match the movies, and failed; while Marvel Rivals chose to go for a stylized look in the vein of the DCAU, and succeeded. Uncanny Valley 101.
i can prove that take to being wrong: half-life 2 from 2004 has clear visual differences between men and women they didn't go for "realistic" look they went for woke look and it costed them a game that could have been amazing
@@NegativeDumpster Rivals is developed by Netease in China, so Western DEI consulting firms like Sweet Baby Inc had no chance of ruining it. Avengers looks like it went through several rounds of DEI consulting to make the characters less "problematic".
@ryszakowy Half-Life 2 would be an example of a game that went for realistic and succeeded, for me. And yes, much of it is due to catering to the woke crowd; Half-Life 2's cast is mostly various scientists and normal people, so having someone as attractive as Alyx in there just raises our opinion of the world. Whereas the Avengers are supposed to look like, well, Gods, so the "average Walmart enjoyer" look just makes us pity everyone else. That's why it failed, a realistic depiction of someone like Scarlett Johannson or Chris Hemsworth would've been appropriate, but by messing the "fantasy casting" they made the impression that their world is even uglier than ours.
@@fluxmuldar Netease has the same diversity hiring policy that western developers have. You can find it in their job postings on their website where the postings tout the diversity of the team. What went wrong with avengers is they tried to ape the looks of the movie characters but had to be distinct enough to avoid having to pay for likeness rights and absolutely nothing to do with DEI or consulting firms. You are being lied to and manipulated by people who trust you not to think to critically about what they say. They are trusting that they can show you something good and say it's good because it doesn't have something you don't like and contrast it with something bad and say it's bad because it does have that thing you don't like then assume you'll just trust them without actually looking into their claims.
But also it's okay to reject censorship and Marvel Rivals' chat censors in blatant favour of China/CCP. You can't say certain things (and I'm not talking about censoring insults or slurs, I mean saying stuff like "Free T aiwan" and stuff like that). But you CAN say other things, eg. regarding Palestine. Personally, not a fan of that kind of stuff.
tbf its all stylized in rivals, it looks more like true to comic rather than MCU. I can understand them needing more grounded designs for the "realistic" acesthetic but they really needed to adjust the scale. It also doesn't excuse the lack of creativity in costume design.

It was off, I would never play a gage with such characters or read a comic book drawn that way... I'm 53, and i have a far better shape than this captain America. This is ridiculous.
If men and women can have each other's parts and figures, then why do these people keep demanding swap characters? Oh right. Because their whole ideology doesn't make sense.
The gender swap only goes in one direction. Think about this: as much as I would want to have a male version of Storm (to fit my D&D character, Daoud, the Thunderchild), the wokistas would howl to the moon at how sexist it is to make female characters male.
They understand it very well actually, but you see, in art and design, there's a thing called *style* , Wich in other words means that they exaggerate certain things to make the characters look better
You know what a body type 1 or 2 is for me? Body type 1 is the short and thin body option in swtor and body type 2 is the normal body option in swtor XD it even got body type 3 wich is muscle mountain body and body type 4, affectionaly called THICC body in swtor
This is me, like Monster Hunter has a similar naming style with voices and hair styles. Now, I do think in the newer games they have male/female be type 1/2 but I mean, the customization comes from the weapons and armor in than game, not your body type. But you *will* be hearing your character's voice a lot, especially when you get hit.
But for the majority I agree with you, Male and Female bodies should be the "top" of the "body tree," and "type" should be different types of said male/female bodies, like petite or muscular or whatever in between.
I remember bickering with someone in gen chat on SWTOR way back in the day where they insisted for the female shapes, 1 was underage, 2 was anorexic, 3 was muscles, and 4 was average/normal. It left me with the sense that people were forgetting what constitutes a normal body shape.

I'm kind of surprised you're not familiar with this. Crystal Dynamics developed the _Marvel's Avengers_ game, and they tried to sneak in a remodel of Black Widow that made her look like a man. Specifically with a gigantic man jaw. Google around for images which made apt comparisons with Lord Farquaad. The backlash was so severe that they were forced to fix her, which was of course perfectly within the scope of their artistic talent-that was never the issue. And far more recently they pulled _the same exact stunt_ with the protagonist of _Perfect Dark,_ which they are currently developing. She now has a mega jaw, just like Black Widow used to. This time, I doubt they'll be forced to retract the design. You really should do a complete expose on this because I haven't yet seen any influencer make the connection and directly compare the "man jaw" examples between _Marvel's Avengers_ and the upcoming _Perfect Dark._ I feel like it would be useful for more people to understand what Crystal Dynamics keeps pushing for with the properties that have been put into their care.
Funny thing that comes to mind for me: If they did do a full set of genderswapped alt skins for sale? I bet you most of the sales would be in a single direction, and we all know which one.
I am willing to accept the chinese censorship when they don't censor what matters for the game... Meanwhile the square one censors every reason it could possibly be chosen. Rivals makes everyone feel like an actual hero, with a heroic design. Avengers feels like garbage cosplay.
I honestly think genderswapped heroes could have been funny if done purely for the hell of it "haha look male blackwidow", but people like 5:24 just taints the whole concept.. (the steam OP, not the twitter one.) It has nothing to do with "fixing" anything because nothing is broken, it would just have been funny to have.
Thought about Playing Marvels Avengers way back when but as soon as I found out they had that failure of a comic book character as the main attraction I noped out. Then I heard how bad the game was and was glad I never picked it up.
I got it because my friend begged me to get it for co-op reasons, we played a whole 1 evening of co-op and that was it, no one wanted to go for a 2nd session. As for the game itself, it's not bad, just woefully mediocre. Like the gameplay could work if the story was good. As for miss muslim, no one played the game to play as her. Her powers are just a lame version of mr. Fantastics powers.
@@Nuinwing I get that, friend needed my help with a Payday 3 stream she was sponsored to do and I had never touched the series in my life. Actually did have fun though and bought Payday 2 as well, found out too why people didnt like Payday 3 as much xD

The art is fine in avengers it's certainly not gonna win awards but it's fine rivals looks better cause it's comic book, they're the characters we know. The biggest issue with avengers game is it was really bad so ofc people are going to compare the really good game to the really bad one but DEI art isn't what made avengers bad the gameplay and the writing is what did it in.
The problem is that nowadays it's impossible if something is bait or genuine because I've seen far worse things said (even in person) that were 100% genuine. Sure, this case is pretty obvious, though it's still not impossible for it to be genuine Never underestimate human stupidity
Yeah, don't get me wrong, the Rivals ones look very cartoony, but I mean... Literally the point, they're comic characters, they're allowed to look cartoony. The Avengers ones just look like Wish cosplays. And Black Panther looked like a feline gimp suit... 0-0 Also, quick edit: That second bit is bait BUT if it wasn't obviously bait, that'd be possible given some of the heroes do have female versions. Thor, Spiderman, Wolverine, even Rocket has a female. They'd make alright alternate costumes, but if people are gonna make posts like that online it'll destroy any hope of that happening.
Avengers really was a fail in Art direction. All male characters look like they were maid from the same 3d model and each character gets uglier the more he differs from the base
Even if Netease was willing to make r63 versions, there is no way the activists would be happy about it because the designs would all be sexy in the traditional sense.
I don't think the designs in Marvel Avengers are result from DEI policy, sure the designs look bad, but I think the main reason for it is because they are following the design from MCU to attract customers, which are more mainstream during that time, but they're also can not use any actors face to avoid pay more
I really hate it when marvel is a head of DC comics. After all, marvel is a reason why DEI and E.S.G. exist because of their association with Disney. If wonder brothers, get their heads out of their ass, and abandon E.S.G. and DEI while hiring people who actually loves the comics and rebellious enough to introduce sexy designs then DC can outcompete marvel once again.
While the argument about “needing” gender-swapped characters is a steaming pile of 💩, gender swapped alternative costumes could actually be interesting Also certain characters already have gender swapped “versions” of themselves so those characters could find their way into the game through this
screw DEI, Marvel Rivals is fantastic. I'm not going to lie to you, TenCent (NetEase) has literally never given af when it comes to cosmetics. They're probably the most inclusive and accidentally diverse gaming company I've ever seen. In SMITE, Aphrodite has a skin literally called "Aphro-dite" where she's an 80's black disco woman with an afro, there's a white skinned version of this cosmetic as well, and both of them are REALLY cool. I love how they've just never cared when it comes to cosmetics, but when it comes to character design, they are ON TOP for sure
gonna remain kinda neutral and say that it's really just the art style here one game goes for the comic vibe and one goes for the movie vibe - now you can prefer one or the other but i will say that i prefer the comic/marvel rivals one personally now... overall? yeah marvel rivals got the best designs by far but i think it really is a matter of art style for a lot of it - again... it's the whole comic hero vibe they give off
what's really funny is that the Rivals skin they used to compare to Thor is actually a skin for Captain America and it still makes a better looking Thor lol
7:00 I dont really want them to go down the awkward slippery slope of gender swapping characters that canonically identify as 1 gender, however I would enjoy a bit more male options for the Support Role, and more female options for the Tank Role.
Hero Hei you can use your loki clone for rollouts, your right click places a clone and does not go on cooldown. That way you can roll out to point and use your clone, and your cloak to get backup immediately. Also having 2 of your healing AOEs in one spot makes you immortal to most incomming damage, and having 3 overlapping makes you immune to entire teams' worth of damage, only able to be killed with 1 shot. Aggressive Loki is super fun to play, and doesnt lose the healing element either since your main attacks are AOE
4:25 "shitting on a game that came out 4 years before yours", dude UMVC3 came out 2011-ish and it has better designs than that 2020 game, might be just me getting nostalgic or biased tho.
To play devil's avocado, I do think the Marvel Avengers designs are at a bit of a disadvantage because they're just standing there, all in the one same pose. I wonder if the designs would have looked better with more dynamic posing?
How the hell is everybody making the same mistake, the barbarian Nordic skin isn't Thor, it's just another captain America skin. I think you're the 7th person I've seen talk about this and call it Thor. The Thor skin in game is actually awesome as hell too.

Avenger's game Hulk design is barely a step up from Eric Cartman's Halloween costume, 'the green Honey Boo Boo'.
everyone in rivals is SO HOT
Based.
Even the raccoon
@guesta9822 i mean
a little bit
if he were human sized then yeah
I am willing to accept the chinese censorship when they don't censor what matters for the game... Meanwhile the square one censors every reason it could possibly be chosen. Rivals makes everyone feel like an actual hero, with a heroic design. Avengers feels like garbage cosplay.
DEI goblins have a problem with hips
5:35 if you have this mind set delete your steam account and never touch games or any media ever
Welcome to the internet
And the funny part is the shill karens (especially on Reddit) are getting so mad about it.. then calling us the cry babies 😂😂😂
I honestly think genderswapped heroes could have been funny if done purely for the hell of it "haha look male blackwidow", but people like 5:24 just taints the whole concept.. (the steam OP, not the twitter one.)
It has nothing to do with "fixing" anything because nothing is broken, it would just have been funny to have.
Actually did have fun though and bought Payday 2 as well, found out too why people didnt like Payday 3 as much xD
as soon as i saw the ai profile pic for 7bitbrian i knew we were about to hear some garbage.
Marvel Avengers where men look like young boys, and women look like grown men. 10/10 from IGN.
Lmaoing @ that forum post. "Hello, I believe I speak for the large part of the community." I have 2 questions: Is the community in the room with us right now? Or have you forgotten to take your medication today? Steam forums can be absolute reddit tier since the awards introduction.
LOL Hulk has a dad bod in Avengers.
Mahvel Rivals has now make video games fun again
The problem is that nowadays it's impossible if something is bait or genuine because I've seen far worse things said (even in person) that were 100% genuine. Sure, this case is pretty obvious, though it's still not impossible for it to be genuine
Never underestimate human stupidity
"we need gender swapped heros in season 1!"
Insert Dr evil "How bout NO!"
0:57 holy sh*t, how people like that are even real. What went so wrong in our society
What do you mean that shi goes hard
I'd argue obvious bait often turns out to be actually meant serious, that's the world we live in
Imagine thinking it's discrimination to not get a gender-swapped fictional character in a game... 🤦♀
Gamers cast Vicious Mockery with a nat 20 roll at DEI slop. Meanwhile DEI supporters continuously roll a nat 1 with a -1 modifier.
that first "thor" skin was actually an alt. skin for Captain America and not Thor.
Avengers really was a fail in Art direction. All male characters look like they were maid from the same 3d model and each character gets uglier the more he differs from the base
Rivals' designs are a bit too overly detailed for my taste, but even to me they look a lot more interesting and expressive than the ones in Avengers
Even if Netease was willing to make r63 versions, there is no way the activists would be happy about it because the designs would all be sexy in the traditional sense.
0:59 WOW. they even made Mina (the previously cute pride mascot) ugly???
I don't think the designs in Marvel Avengers are result from DEI policy, sure the designs look bad, but I think the main reason for it is because they are following the design from MCU to attract customers, which are more mainstream during that time, but they're also can not use any actors face to avoid pay more
That avenger Hulk looks like he drank a bit too much bud light
I really hate it when marvel is a head of DC comics. After all, marvel is a reason why DEI and E.S.G. exist because of their association with Disney. If wonder brothers, get their heads out of their ass, and abandon E.S.G. and DEI while hiring people who actually loves the comics and rebellious enough to introduce sexy designs then DC can outcompete marvel once again.
While the argument about “needing” gender-swapped characters is a steaming pile of 💩, gender swapped alternative costumes could actually be interesting
Also certain characters already have gender swapped “versions” of themselves so those characters could find their way into the game through this
screw DEI, Marvel Rivals is fantastic.
One of the reasons Marvel Rivals is successful is the laxk of Khamala Kahn.
By ‘we want’, who are this we? If I wanted to see a swapped model for hero I would go to certain sites for those.
Rivals designs are undoubtedly an improvement.
gonna remain kinda neutral and say that it's really just the art style here
one game goes for the comic vibe and one goes for the movie vibe - now you can prefer one or the other but i will say that i prefer the comic/marvel rivals one personally
now... overall? yeah marvel rivals got the best designs by far but i think it really is a matter of art style for a lot of it - again... it's the whole comic hero vibe they give off
what's really funny is that the Rivals skin they used to compare to Thor is actually a skin for Captain America and it still makes a better looking Thor lol
I'd be more interested in it personally if it weren't a PvP shooter. But I'm happy those who like that genre have something.
That title lol. This is embarrassing, man
7:00 I dont really want them to go down the awkward slippery slope of gender swapping characters that canonically identify as 1 gender, however I would enjoy a bit more male options for the Support Role, and more female options for the Tank Role.
Lara Croft has definitely been toned down and more flat with much more clothing layers.
At this point that black panther skin should be called out for racism cuz wtf
They're blind to their own racism, so they'll be offended by it
A common thing in DEI designs 🤔
Of course TH-cam deleted my comment
I wrote out my thoughts on each one... but TH-cam immediately deleted it. I guess I said something that doesn't agree with The Message.
Avengers designs look like halloween customs and i never seen those but once.
4:25 "shitting on a game that came out 4 years before yours", dude UMVC3 came out 2011-ish and it has better designs than that 2020 game, might be just me getting nostalgic or biased tho.
No no, you're still on a right track
To play devil's avocado, I do think the Marvel Avengers designs are at a bit of a disadvantage because they're just standing there, all in the one same pose. I wonder if the designs would have looked better with more dynamic posing?
Feels like the people behind Marvel Avengers saw Project Graham and went all "What if The Avengers, but Graham?"
When I saw the avengers models for the first time in comparison to rivals, i actually thought it was a character creation in some game
20 bucks says disney pulls the marvel license the moment the contract is up.
How the hell is everybody making the same mistake, the barbarian Nordic skin isn't Thor, it's just another captain America skin.
I think you're the 7th person I've seen talk about this and call it Thor. The Thor skin in game is actually awesome as hell too.
That is why stylized art is video games will always age better. Those Avenger designs from the Marvel Avengers game suffer from photorealistic graphics. It just look uncanny and lame.
That Black Panther design makes me believe that Erebor might be located in Wakanda.
what does this have to do with dei
Literally nothing, it's a grift
I do hope Squeenix is taking notes.
Thor from MA looked like some dude that escaped from mandatory rehab.
I chuckled so hard when I saw Black Panther. He looks like he's in his mid-30s with a beer belly and a lack of exercise.
Give gamers what they want!
I mean they can probably make skins of a multiverse where everyone is just a Rule 63 version of themselves
Arent rivals designs more intentional to make characters much more identifiable from eachother?
The avengers ones look like if you were trying to make them in another games character creator
Black panter from avengers looks more like a bulldog than a hero in a pather style suit 😂
