Really though he didn't think a war would happen and when it did he was like "Oh shit, should I get involved". Once Germany started curb stomping everyone he kinda rush mobilized some border guards lacking weapons and went in on France.
Germany prepared for YEARS before this. Italy wasn't even going war eco they were trying to balance their civilian Eco.
To not get your industry bombed, thus putting you in an infinite repair-loop, build your industry in your Balkan states and the Alps, also putting level 4 aa (lvl 5 is too expensive) Also, there are interceptor planes which are great for shooting down bombers

Hi there, I'm the Black Ice dev that works basically only on Italy.
Very soon, probably in the next upcoming version, BICE will see a new reworked Italy with a reworked NF, airforce, war in Ethiopia and characters, both politicians and generals/admirals.
Hopefully by 2025, I'll be able to work on a new part all about the Armistice and the Italian civil war, bringing the RSI and the allied Kingdom of Italy, with new already planned mechanics.

@@francescomorandi1039 BICE it's a historical immersive mod, so ahistorical things are not a scope of the project. There are plausible lines and scenarios for many countries, but surely monarchist Germany isn't one of them

Tbh in base game enabling buffs on majors and then playing on Elite is the only way to make sure AI can oppose player after NSB. AI can't comprehend supply 2 years after the updates

I tried playing italy a while ago, i recomend rushing oil on libya, flee from ethiopia, build all in one air region and then build AA and put some air wings to intercept, and manage to get naval supremacy on the sea (always put minimun fuel you can cover all mediterrenean). My run went wrong because of supplies on urss and africa, and then the brutal air superiority of the allies. One interesting thing was i made L3 tanks cost one tank and engine parts, so i could spam them without specialized factories in combination with other more armored tanks. Also if you run low on fuel you can ask your ally to give u fuel... and make rubber factories
I agree, I always abandon Ethiopia very early. It has nothing worth defending, it drains a lot of manpower to pacify it, and with the exposed coast and the big front with egypt to the north and other british colonies to the south makes it almost indefensible, it's just a waste of men and resources, which Italy has already very few of, to begin with. Fortify Lybia and focusing on the mediterranean islands and on suez and then pushing the eastern front is the best bet imo.
@@Augustus_Imperator why dont you simply create the east African colony faction? There is a whole event that lets you create that country, then the event lets you transfer over some generals and the leader of that nation. They have their own tech tree and are capable to stand on their own, with some assistance. That way, you can leave a 'expeditionary defensive force' in East Africa, and mainly focus on northern Africa.
@@Ealdorman_of_Mercia I used to do it but then events happend, and then they release their own vassals and things get complicated while trying to deal with UK in the mediterranean, Ethiopia has almost zero resources and manpower anyway

@@matthiuskoenig3378 that's the joke, they were the problem exactly to those. Combination of heavy armor equal to KV-1 and 2 pounder means that Matilda II can even slug it out with Pz. IV F2 which had 7,5cm Kwk40 thanks to that one having no armor at all from PoV of 2 pounder shell.
However the situation was different when brits encountered ANY towed gun. Crew was protected by gunshield or trench or just distance from machine gun fire and 2 pounder didn't have an effective HE shell. Or rather none at all as brits didn't issue them to troops. As a result it's an oversized marksman rifle. Imagine that now you have to kill a towed AT gun before it kills you. That gun has like 9-12 people crewing it. You can disable only one person and only with direct hit. Your chances?
When american tanks arrived, brits had received a new tool - 75mm HE shell. And suddenly reports about scary german "acht acht" became fewer.
Hmm, I wonder if crews of Pz.III with 37mm had encountered similar problems?

I'm playing on an older build (last build of BBA and before the industry rework, and I don't know if there were major combat changes), but it should be ok if I recommend some strategies.
I was using a bunch of motorized divisions instead of armored divisions to help deal with IC shortages, while converting the Zara-class cruisers to some basic carriers. Built a shitload of light cruisers and destroyers to help with naval supremacy. Light bombers are a decent CAS replacement for Italy, and multi-roles are pretty damn decent in terms of air superiority and range (until you get the G.55). Right call to focus on air instead of tanks. Eventually you could maybe license some German tanks along the line once Italian industry catches up.
I didn't bother calling in Italian East Africa (cheesy, I know) but it helped tie up a bunch of allied divisions. (unless it's automatically called in in later builds, then I can't help ya there.)
You're essentially on a ticking timebomb until the Americans are called into the war, but the earlier you can get oil from other sources after getting out of the Med, the better. I usually try to rush for the canal by going for a naval invasion of Palestine with my marines and motorized divisions, and the light bombers should be able to CAS the small garrisons there to the ground. Should be easy sailing from there, securing Malta, Gibraltar, and Cyprus.
Most importantly -- to help secure the logistics lines between Libya and Italy -- I built a railroad linking Syracuse to Rome, and a railroad from Benghazi to connect all of the ports in the area. Try to use light bombers to bomb the shallow sea area in the Med (think it's the Strait of Sicily) and the Central Med, to help with the submarine problem. Lock down the other regions until you want to naval invade something,
I dunno if you did this, but not going for anti-comintern should secure Soviet oil supplies until Barb. (unless something changed in TFA or AAT, or in BICE itself)
Historical Italy took like 10 tries for me to get right, but it was really fun to finally secure the Med and to kick out the Brits out of Africa. Hope this helps a little.
I played a lot on the most recent version (post industry rework) and it took me around 7-8 attempts as well to get Italy right. Using motorized and later mechanized instead of armoured divisions at the start is indeed way better for IC, having 4 30 width motirized with shit load of med artyllery, heavy anti-air and some antitank is really all you need in 1940 to push until El-Alamain and encircle lots of divisions. Now the only 2 ways to get Egypt is 1) naval invasions in palestine supported by either the motorized or a massive infantry army. 2) build a port one tile behind El Alamain (it takes around 3 months) then pull back to Lybia, wait for british divisions to advance, then use your motorized divisions to run on the coast and encircle them, doing this 3-4 times will free Egypt of a lot of troops (and tanks) which will with the help of CAS allow you to take Egypt without any naval invasions, I must say it is indeed cheese but it seems to be THE ONLY way to pass El-Alamain without a naval invasion or german tanks (since you will most likely play in singleplayer and the AI dosent send nor gives you german divisions). Light bombers are a must since they (especially later models) have the range to reach Gibraltar or any other island/province you want to naval invade. To be honest I dont know if building naval bombers actually helps? I put like 4-6 factories (which is a huge junk of industry) on them from the start and it leaves you with around 300 NAVs at the start of the war, but I haven't really been able to say if they were actually effective or not so most of the time I dont bother building them :/
Carriers are indeed a must do for Italy, I dont know if converting the cruisers is better than building around 4 fleet carriers tho, I usually go for the second option and it works wonders. Also putting 2 factories on desert equipment from the start will give you enough to put it in all of your divisions and give you a bit of a boost in africa. Lastly I dont know if its actually better but usually I ignore all the airforce and navy focuses until I have run out of industry ones to do, which means around 41/42, since even just 1 more factory is immensly more important than any small buffs. I believe playing Italy with a Germany coop would be the best thing ever but I dont have anyone to play with so sadly thats not something I can comment on :

I took one look at Black Ice and just said "Fuck no i want to have fun while playing games!
but it looks and feels much more realistic. Its hard but Im currently playing as Italy and trust me, it feels far far better than vanilla. It adds to much more immersion and flavour.

Im just gonna throw my 2.732 cents into the ring. One stop buffing the ai, black ice already makes you wanna die after playing for 3 mintues so you dont need to make it harder. Two itality probably has good plane since that was the only good military assets they had in the war so try to make a plane build. Paradrop the islands if you don't have naval superiority and you probably want to do it right as fhe war starts as the ai probably wont have many troops on the island. After the islands you need to secure the med otherwise you are screwed so snatch Gibraltar and the canal. If you somehow have navy superiority then naval invade the canal if you cant push though el alimane. Anyways thats my ideas i guess

Played BICE Italy often times here are some recommendations:
Airforce:
You basically have to use tactical bombers the first good CAS planes Italy gets are 1943/44 techs, so SM 79 is the preferred choice for ground support missions! This is a very good bomber for early war until 1941 i would say. Continue afterwards with Cant Z. 1007 you can also use either of them for naval strike, but since you have 2 research slots for air you also research dedicated naval bombers.
As for fighters Italy has 3 research lines i recommend the multirole varient they are a bit more expansive to build IC-wise, but they have the best stats coming with good range and also you kind of have to research them anyway if you build carriers. Dont buildold biplanes they are a waste of IC, the first fighter you should produce is the G.50 multirole.
So starting the war you should aim for:
800 - 1000 fighters
400 - 500 tactical bombers
ca. 200 naval bombers
Navy:
I think Navy you did quite good, just as in your run AI likes to focus on the Mediterranean until you take Suez. Get a new destroyer with focusing on asw until mid '40 you can get out like 20 i think.
You can also use Somalia as a Naval Base to raid the Southern Suez Canal or the Indian Ocean, but thats not that impactful.
Army:
Thats probably the biggest problem Italy has very shitty templates. In the beginning only the Mountaineers and Motorized Divisions are ok, if you really dont want to edit them yourself there are some focus trees that give better ones. But i'm not sure if you still do that i think for other campaigns you followed this right?
Some Basic templates i use are:
Infantry 9x Inf 2x Art 1x Med Art, take most of the support companies esp. Heavy Art! Recon, Engieers and Supply Companies are also important.
Starting the war they should have like 90-100 soft attack, and you dont need that many i think like 25-30 are enough, add Anti-Tank before you fight on the eastern front.
Motorised 6x Mot. Inf 3 Motorcycle Inf 2x Mot. Art 1x Mot. Med Art 1x AT, same support as the infantry just motorised and armored car recons.
I would aim for 3-5 at outbreak of the war.
Armored 6x Mot. 4x Med Armor 2x Mot. Art 1x Mot. Med Art, same support as motorized
2 should be good for early war expand afterwards just know that they never will be that good as Italian tanks were only mediocre in 1940/41 and afterwards ...
Although they have some ok SPGs and semihistorical "heavy" tanks tree to the right
Garrision
4x light Inf 2 Art, not much support companies only for defending Libya, Greek Islands and so on
15-20 are needed to guard the ports
General Gameplay:
Get fuel depots!! Stockpiles of at least 1M fuel is good. You have to build storage or rubber factories. Also build some engine factories Italy lacks them and a shortage can be critical.
Abandon East Africa, Ai usually has so many troops there its not worth defending it.
Dont build too many sepcial forces there is a limit and if get over it you get very serious penalties to your army, UI for info about this limit is under the command points.
1940 and 41 are very important if you didnt do well here, it will be impossible to be sucessful afterwards due to the material conditions.
You can try to get Yugoslavia before WW2 starts, try to justify the time around when germany invades Poland so the Allies are distracted from you and the other Balkan nations stopped their guarantees. But this one is not necessary it just makes you a bit stronger.
Try to get into the war in Mid 1940, dont bother with invading Southern France, focus on capturing Suez with your mobile forces and some infantry to back them up and take Malta with a naval Invasion. Invasion of Tunesia was buggy for me last time it caused Vichy France to not exist, so just garrision the front.
After France capitulates rush for Greece and Yugoslavia (if dont have them already) and afterwards Turkey so you have a border with the Soviet Union before Germany invades them.
During Barbarossa you can do a naval invasion of Crimea and sent your mobile forces from Egypt there to use the good tank terrain of southern Ukraine. And 20 Divisions of Infantry/Mountaineers should be enough to capture the Caucasus. Depending on the situation you can even try to take Stalingrad.
You can get Yugoslavia, Romania, Turkey, and Albania conquered before WW2 if you justify on day 1
If you focus on convoy escorts from the start they'll get demolished by the british navy. I try to focus on oil, navy and naval bombers to win a big naval battle at the start of the war (before you run out of oil), once I win that battle, I can use your escorts and try to supply Africa. I try to focus heavy on navy since I can't use my land forces before I win the supremacy on the med.

because the allies were fucked up aswell most of the war. even at the end of the war the us had massive issues (and they were the best equiped and organised of the allies).

I guess the biggest insult is setting italian tank tech tree in accordance to a year. Context: M11/39, M13/40, M14/41, M15/42, P75 and M26/40 aka P43 are ALL descendants of soviet T-26 captured in Spain. P75, which later became known as P43, in fact was developed around the same time as M14/41 and M15/42. All these tanks are of same tech level! 1939! The difference is the main Damocles's sword over Italy - budget. You don't get P75 in 1941 because you don't prioritise tank development. Apparently only Japan in base game had to make compromises ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
Italy had great planes and aircraft engines, it had modern tanks and it had adequate fleet. It _just_ couldn't have it all. Or even two at the same time.
Italian fleet would be toast like irl if you don't rush Gufo radar.
Italian airforce had problem with producing their high performance engines(none of them made to the newest italian planes all of whom used DB603 as a result) plus their CAS designs were quite questionable.
And so on.
Another tank captured by italians in Spain was BT-5. It was sidelined and ignored due to lack of funding. So italians started to develop cavalry/cruiser tanks only after encountering brits in Lybia, 3 years later. So yeah, M16/43 is also a plausible 1939-1940 design, just not one derived from T-26, but rather from BT-5... minus torsion bars.
P.S.: love AI's T-34 running on air after he had captured Caucasus and cut off Iran and its refineries. Yeah, very historical. According to soviet view on history where Abadeen refinery never existed and tanks and planes can run on crude oil 🤣
they are not descendants of captured soviet T-26. they are descendants of british vickers 6-tons the italians had bought for evaluation. further proof: the initial M11/39 prototype was built before italy got involved in spain.
also the M16/43 being a cruiser tank with christie suspension or torsion bar suspension based on british cruisers (and thus potentially BT-5/7s) is a misconception. its actually got torsion spring boggies of the same style as the L3/38 (an improved suspension L3/35, ie suspension based on spiral torsion springs. think a windup clock). another fun fact: the development of the Sahariano delayed the M15/42 which had its prototype finished in 1941 and thus could have seen service in 1942. the inspiration from the british cruisers is not the speed (something already intended and being worked towards with medium tanks) but the low siluette of certain british cruiser designs (which is why they shifted from the carro medio coloniale mock up [essentially a slopped armour M15] in june 1941 to the much lower siluette of the sahariano blueprints and eventual prototype.

From a BICE player, you were doing to many things and 375 factories in 46 way way way to low. So advice...
1. Take yugo without being in the axis then they are gone for good.
2. dont built shit tanks, from the 42 model on with welding they are okay but still suck...
3. get rid of the debuffs via focus tree
4. dont have your navy out if its doing nothing
5. Dont expect the germans to save you they will run out manpower and collapse
6. Use the focus tree to get the lybian oil (dont loose lybia :P)
7. Forget about ethiopia not worth the hazzle you cant save it (or atleast i cant)
8. Dont Join the war before the fall of france
BONUS TIP swap your economy to closed as quick as possible to save on imports
