  • A new mod called Kalterkrieg just dropped, a Cold War mod based on the Kaiserreich timeline and it is certainly one of the HOI4 mods you can play.

      @@aiiv7839 I mean at least with TNO you have an assload of proxy wars if you're playing the majors, or if you're Russia you get the warlord period. Generally TNO can be excused mostly because it's designing around a different idea, your nation first, international second....
      Kalterkrieg though.... It feels bare. It also feels like the AI just folds at every opportunity, and the diplomacy, for a cold war mod, is lacking at best. It's a decent starting point for an alpha release, but there needs to be WAY more content for this mod to be very enjoyable. well, true but its not supposed to be a staring game, just no or much less likelihood of total war. Might be a bit obvious of an example but look at TNO, they fill the gaps in gameplay with unique government mechanics or proxy wars to engage in

  • @Galactipunk
    @Galactipunk หลายเดือนก่อน +299

    From the top of my head, here's a quick list of my own suggestions for the setting:
    * Game either starts at a later date or the timeline is re-written so that the Second Weltkrieg ends earlier. HOI4 is terrible at handling demilitarization and post-war economics, so it's easier to just have the setting start after all that. Plus, it'd give the setting some much needed time to acclimate to a cold-war scenario.
    * Russia wins in the east, re-taking all their territories but never getting further than that. Their in-game path could consist of either getting closer to the Entente as a means to enclose Germany or going alone and attempting to become a third player in the cold war. And would uniquely be the only major power in the setting that could flip to any of the big ideologies, as it fits their loose cannon role.
    * Japan conquers China and nothing more. Their in-game path could be influenced by OTL UK: A major power that has to slowly watch it's might crumble as it fails to hold on to its empire. Could potentially align itself with any faction, although it'd have a fierce rivalry with Russia.
    * USA is united under a entente-leaning MacArthur or Huey Long. Acting as the necessary counterbalance to make sure the Entente and Reichspakt are equally powerful.
    * France remains split with the question of its unification being a major debate throughout the game. A major mechanic for Germany and UK would be to prop up their French ally so that their side is the most likely to unify the country once the possibility becomes actually realized.
    The biggest failure of this mod, in my eyes, is that it fails at everything that cold war mods are ideal for. Slow burn, story-driven and highly dynamic campaigns about slowly acquiring an unchallenged control over the world through proxy conflicts and subversive means. Not to mention that the risk of nuclear armageddon, the entire reason for a cold war in the first place, is barely noticeable.

    • @pufffincrazy5275
      @pufffincrazy5275 หลายเดือนก่อน +61

      Yeah it’s hard to have that threat of nuclear annihilation when nukes still have to dropped via plane. TNO solves that problem by just jumping straight into the 60s

    • @jediwatts1539
      @jediwatts1539 หลายเดือนก่อน

      The US Civil War could also be fought during the opening of kalterkrieg if they rewrite it to instead be halted by a truce after wiping out the syndicalists and the fall of Washington with the lines stagnating so that each of the new world powers can fight a proxy war in america with the winner taking on a role more akin to spain during world war 2 as the war would devastate the industrial base and leave it a burnt husk with the constant partisan warfare and a largely illegitimate government (regardless of which side wins it would still be seen as illegitimate)

      Nah Japan conquering China is a meh suggestion really. We see this happen in other cold war mods like TNO but realistically the Japanese were being run dry by the Chinese even before any major Western intervention. Also, I think an independent Japan could act as an interesting counterweight to China. Lets stay you're apart of the Alliance Accord and a Riechspacht aligned China has won the civil war, then you could see the alliance courting Japan to act as a naval dominator in the region. Not all Cold War games need to have Japan winning in China really.

    • @SenorTakaGOD
      @SenorTakaGOD หลายเดือนก่อน +8

      No.
      Russia taking all of the East leaves Germany with few to no allies - although it would be better if Russia had an American Civil War of its own where you could support any faction when Savinkov dies.
      Also, America's division post-Civil War mostly makes sense if you read the lore (except for the Great Lakes Government - that should've gone to the AUS.)

Ideologically they are much more clearly opposed (Syndicalism vs fascism/monarchism), rather than the Entente vs Reichspakt (Social liberalism vs social conservatism). Plus, both would be of a much more similar strength, having just rolled over Europe, and I can see an American front to the Cold War as well, with maybe a Mexican-backed south and a Canadian-backed north? It makes sense for the pacific states to capitalize on the union states and syndicates focusing on eachother and maybe take victory with japanese aid, And Japan should be the main opponent to germany. And most of africa and south america should have gone socialist. as kind of a weaker third alliance. As it makes much more sense for those nations to embrace communism. I just kind of hate the concept of this mod, like one of the coolest parts of Kaiserreich is the prominence of syndicalism with France and Britain being syndicalist and this mod basically entirely removes that. I think a more interesting Kaiserreich cold war mod would be one in which due to Black Monday the Germans fail to win the two front war resulting in a cold war between the syndicalist west and a fascist Russia. They had the opportunity to basically write a reversed cold war and yet chose basically the most boring outcome of a Kaiserreich game. That's all just my opinion and I'd be happy to hear other people's thoughts on the mod.

      i feel like the ideological conflict that partly drove the cold war just isnt present in the scenario of the mod. parallels can be drawn to how the soviets and allies begrudgingly cooperated like how the entente and reichspakt do in kaiserreich, but their disagreements are really only territorial. its kind of hard to make a spy thriller with proxy wars and schemes and every other staple of the cold war when the only issue to be raised between the 2 factions is who gets to own alsace lorraine. perhaps if the entente supported revolutions against german colonial rule? the only theater of war would be africa (barely any proxy war content as it stands) since germany lost its colonial holdings everywhere else. i would say they could support revolutions in eastern europe but as the lore of the mod is currently i would assume germany crushed any movements that stood against their rule in the east. maybe once the mod gets more content and fleshes out more of the setting it might be better, but right now it feels set up to be a ww3 scenario rather than a cold war, especially with the stalemate in the east.

I do like the concept, but a lack of proxy conflicts makes it a bit boring and the way they organize the Russo-German armistice with Russia ceding at minimum the entirety of Ukraine they captured is a little dubious in terms of plausibility. Considering that the continuation of a war between Germany and Russia is something neither party wants. Even with Germany having the upper hand militarily, the idea that Russia would simply give up Sevastopol is laughable without at least a short continuation of the conflict.

    When i tried out the mod, i decided to play the French Republic, i was really invested into the French situation and wanted to re-unite the motherland into a unified Republic !
    It went terribly, first off, the only main content for South France is managing the colonies, like OTL you need to deal with de-colonization, but the problem is that the devs must have a weird boner with the "OmG COlONialISm Too BaD" and made it IMPOSSIBLE to successfully reform the colonies (you need 10 reforms and i shit you not, there are 2 events which literally steals reform plan...), and i went for the friendlier path for the reform too (you change from The French Republic to the French Union too) ! But nope, they break away anyway and only Algeria can be kept if you win the Algerian war. (i didnt take the BS and allowed diplo to war and annex my colonies back).
    But thats not all ! When you look at mainland France, obviously there is going to be something big happening, and in late game, both Frances get option to sabotage other another and if you get all the requirements to 5, an event will trigger and destabilize the other France, so for me, i converted the students to my side and with a bit of blowing shit up and giving guns, they rebelled in Paris ! And i can join and strike North France ! Problem : unlike TNO, North France doesnt leave the faction so that the battle can proceed without direct intervention, and Germany was called into the rebellion, they fucking nuked 3 times Paris, and also because for a reason i dont understand, mods for the cold war have also a weird boner for complex economy/having 1 billion things need to building shit, for two-three years i built like...5 civs ? (you need A LOT of fuel to do anything from your tanks to the small toaster from a random civilian, and France doesnt start with alot of oil, i manually added fuel boosts to have a working economy) I like to civ greed for two years then switch to mils, but here its late game and i started to create my mils only two years ago, i focused everything on land and mostly ignored the air (it was hell to fight back). I just pulled out cheats to obliterate Germany (and i puppeted them everywhere expect Berlin because i developped nukes and wanted revenge for what they did to Paris).
    And also there is no post content for a unified France, you just take states and fin, no events of unification or nothing...
    This was terrible.

Put them in colonial conflicts with the Entente, have Romania try to drag them into conflict with Austria, let Savinkov nibble at the East with border wars and skirmishes, really double down on the Oil Crisis and make it a huge focus on Germany being able to import from the middle east or the Americas, but lacking the naval forces to ensure global shipping.
    If you wanna go all in on the horrors of Mittleafrika, then have it set up in a warlord scenario at game start, with Germany having to choose between having Gamer Moments or losing all of their colonies full stop, which all the other power blocks can stoke those problems to weaken Germany.

Given this is the .1 release, all the mechanics that are supposed to take up Germany's attention aren't there, which is unfortunate.
    Also the AUS stalled the fuck out because iirc they have to deal with the fact they've tried to kill democracy after revolting *against* someone trying to kill democracy, so there are loads of internal issues.

  • @ok_studios
    @ok_studios 6 วันที่ผ่านมา +1

    We really just need a dedicated Cold War grand strategy at this point, it can be done I am sure of it, but it needs to be less about war, and more about intrigue, political efforts and with a subversive focus. Have the player feel less in control of their superpower and more like there are ants crawling on you in the dark and you have to figure out where they come from, if they are a threat and asses responses to them if they are a threat or worse, a response even if you genuinely can't tell. Responses must then be considered domestically and geopolitically in ways that don't increase tensions and dissent within your country too much that can then be taken advantage of by ideological opponents. Dissent must then be subverted. Telling lies, promoting simple myths and placing both enemies and potential enemies (genuine ideological opponents that can be turned to support the geopolitical rival) as villains in a story weaved, and building ideological narratives defending the status quo. Paradoxically also advancing change in other countries (allies of rival, rival itself) comprising decisions to the deal with the conditions, making tough decisions that come with consequences, even if you think "that is the good decision, let them speak or be nice" etc, or simply go full ultra CIA/KGB surveillance evil to maintain control which of course comes with massive risks of dissent too.
    How the Cold War subversively changes the character of your nation should be the focus, how ideology can be melded and changed to defend what we either know or sometimes distressingly think needs to be protected, even if it goes against the core values of our people, faith and ideology. It is to balance who we are, and who we don't want to be, and where that leads us that creates the conflicts. The message of the game could be how idealism clashes with conditions and the potential of worsening reality, the question should be how much can we do to protect who we are, before that changes us? And the open ended question is: Is that a bad thing? -- Then you can also allow the player to play groups in superpowers, groups working to subvert liberal democracy/capitalism independently or for the USSR, same vice versa in USSR. Or groups that are non-aligned seeks to use chaos as a ladder, creating front organizations with names of other ideologies, subtly massaging the domestic tensions into boiling points that can be used until you have taken over completely, these are the different competing elements.
    Then later develop on proxy wars with their own internal struggles and strategy, and also a different playstyle for proxy countries in Africa and Asia about courting influence from both sides similar to Tropico but you know more fleshed out, but if proxy war is all the Cold War is before WW3 then that sucks and thats most mods.

    • @quirinoguy8665

      But, hear me out, for the sake of making a game and alternative history y'know, not boring? Instead of Japan conquering China the good o'l fashioned way, what if a much more diplomatic but Nationalistic Japan was made, and during the crises of the 2nd Weltkrieg would gain allies through the use of diplomacy and conquest? The Philippines, Indonesia, Vietnam, and Thailand would willingly join because they were supported and funded by the Co-prosperity sphere, they're not much but having loyal allies in resource rich Indies that are indebted to you would really help a lot and it isn't much of a stretch either.
      The Philippines is easy, abandoned by the Americas it becomes prone to Reichspakt meddling and Syndicalists revolutionaries, Japan offers military protection and economic support, thus gaining a loyal albeit weak ally, but thanks to American development of the country because of the close proximity to China it isn't to be scoffed at either, the Philippines has plenty of good infrastructure and industry compared to other nations and with enough investment and their willingness to join, they can become a reliable ally that will provide support for the upcoming war against the German colonies and China.
      Vietnam would win in their insurrection thanks to the support of the Japanese but that would come in time, for now the front is a stalemate thus further weakening the Germans but thanks to Japan giving aid and their anti Western stance, despite harboring Syndicalists tendencies they choose to be pragmatic and will ally with Japan.
      Next is Indonesia, and again it is similar to Japan but this time with the Germans busy in Vietnam and the Dutch not really being a strong power house of a country would lose to the revolutionaries, Indonesia gets their independence but some areas are still occupied by the Dutch, and of course Japan played a major part in it.
      Lastly Thailand, ambitious and feeling threatened by the Germans would make natural allies for Japan and thus would be a loyal ally to them.
      So we got Japan controlling several nations without much effort and have access to oil, they championed themselves to be anti Westerners and with Asia being oppressed by colonizers they gain a lot of credibility, but the creme de la creme is China of course.
      So how would this go about? Japan will use diplomacy to divide and conquer, warlords who are not loyal to the Qing and Anti-Westerner are easy allies to bag, and once the 2nd Weltkrieg kicks off many of them would see this as an opportunity to get rid of them especially the Legation Cities, and they attack, German East Indies would try to support them but Japan would attack them in a surprise offensive, sinking and crippling the East Asian Squadron, eventually they would lose and the remnants would return to Europe to fight the most vital of conflicts, eventually Southeast Asia would be free and thus gain new allies and puppets, Malaysia would most likely be puppets, the Dutch colonial remnants would die thus uniting Indonesia, Vietnam and Thailand or Siam would control Indochina, and well the Philippines is Philippines, they'll help provide manpower and resources to conquer China through the use of puppet war lords, utilizing the recently conquered Legation Cities and in due time all of China falls to puppetry or direct conquest.
      Then in 1962, an Asiatic-Pacific alliance would stand to play a major role in a politically polarized world, Japan championing itself as Asia's protector against Western oppression would fight proxy wars against Germany in Central Asia, and a fractured India. That is probably the only feasible way they could win and compete,
      I can see America and Russia being their major enemies, while Germany or Syndicalist United Europe would be their secondary.

    The funny thing is, is that the assumption of the Reichspakt being a "very strong faction" after 7yrs worth of a two front war is a bit much to just say Germany and its allies shrug it off.
    Remember that Kalterkrieg takes place in a Cold War scenario within the Kaiserreich universe.
    This means that the German Empire and its Central Powers alliance fought from 1914 to 1921 which the war ended with the French mainland collapsing and a stalemate against the UK.
    The UK itself war wise is only affected via manpower losses in its contribution towards the 1st Weltkrieg, but its not until the Union and mining riots which results in the royal family fleeing to Canada in a relatively quick revolt. So the British isle itself now under the UOB is in a relatively mid/strong position due to its lack of total destruction from the 1st Weltkrieg.
    Now going into KR in 1936 you have an America torn apart by economic instability, natural disasters and political and potentially racial based violence throughout the whole nation. You have a Germany which goes into own version of the Great Depression and your hope is to fix things before the already stabilized UOB and the recovering COF can rebuild themselves and try anything.
    In the east you have a rampant and revanchist Russia doing everything to prepare and make sure they will go to war with Germany.
    If the 2nd Weltkrieg is 7yrs long, then that means its started in 1940-41 depending on how much dead space is between the official end of the war and the start of the Kalterkrieg timeline.
    With this in mind the US has an election and subsequent civil war in 1936 and presuming it ends around the same time the 2nd Weltkrieg did then that means the continental US was embroiled in total war for nearly 12ish years. With likely light intervention on the Canadian part to rid the continent of syndicalism, its probably what little advances they did make and not risking a general war on their door step while also fighting across the Atlantic that explains the small puppet states outside of New England.
    Overall the setting isn't as bad as it may look if you understand the context and build up. The biggest issue at this time seems to be that there is only a "emulation path" in terms of content in this initial release which creates a literal Cold War scenario just in the framework of the KR timeline.
    I'm sure as time goes on and more development is put into the mod, different ways of escalating and causing general conflict will arise.

  • @notmydeadname
    @notmydeadname หลายเดือนก่อน +11

    also, why is this set before 1960, given that in our timeline mutually assured destruction capability began being a real thing after the beginning of the '60s, and here it would've been even later, given that the first nuke was used in 1947 (or '48)? why is it a cold war if there is no major incentive in keeping it cold? german militarism surely would've overpowered the logic in this scenario, leading to a third world war

    Even though its a cold war mod it needs more flavor, it just feels like its "go there on that civil war, finished? great, do it again in another place" and I think that some things that could be really interesting is well, helping the sick man of europe last against a revolution, more difficulty and logic, honestly I feel that the brazilian-argentinian war was just pushover, also as a brazilian it doesnt make sence a part of RS be free since well, at one point all the state was free, and there isnt really any other change there so im pretty sure they just did that to not say that South america was the same thing as vanilla, also it would be cool a system where you need to actively negotiate to keep peace as in the actual cold war, also the logic doesnt make sence, austro hungary alive? as one state? the ottoman empire existing as turkey? I bet they wouldn't give up land to survive and would die,russia giving free land is just unimaginable and civil wars just got no flavor, no logic, no context, its just target practice for someone good, So I would recomend give it a backstory since lets say all we know is that revolutions are happening and that the entente is made of deadweight, explain what happened and make unique focus trees, like in brazil you could develop and explore our numerous revolutions, the cangaço, and dive in similar ways to other countries histories like USA, maybe after countrywide protests against war the protests turn violent and radicalism rises, the central government survives and maybe a group,lead by macartur could try to revive the "true usa" and restore freedom and make the american dream come true, maybe also needing to pay attention to mitteleuropa or they turn against you in a third weltkrieg, also maybe you could see action in a italian civil war or italian balkanization because of the regionalism, maybe an second spanish civil war, dive into salazar dictatorship (portugal), since argentina is making an war against brazil chile could ally to brazil to take tierra del fuego or more, maybe countries take advantage of wars and enter, maybe iraq enters syrian civil war to get influence, bolivia tries to get their land back, after the decolonization of mittelafrika we could see the newborn country go for an madagaskar hurt by fights for independence,china tries to get to their qing dinasty territories, a great northern war, maybe an situation like the cuban missile crisis, central asian people rise up against russia, all this with events could make a more interesting cold war and a great mod!
    I hope you see this creators, good luck in development.

    Personally, I would've preferred it go down like this:
    Internationale only cold war based around authoritarian vs. libertarian socialist schism. Initial comradery turned bitter rivalry when neither side acknowledges the socialism of the other side. A syndicalist revolution in a totalist state against totalist authoritarianism, or authoritarian back sliding of syndicalist America or another syndicalist or radsoc power could be flash points for conflicts.
    Socialist vs. capitalist? That's the point of the OG kaiserreich. Authoritarian vs. authoritarian? Bro, you just jerk off to uniforms.
    What media really investigates the implementation of socialism post world revolution? How would the Authsoc vs Libsoc divide get handled with revolutionary fervor at it's peak and war at it's most destructive?
    Personally, I just think this would be a lot more interesting, and more original.

    I believe that Russia returning the Belarus and Ukrainian territories is in exchange for a more permanent-ish peace with Germany. When you start the game as Russia you have a timer that says cca 100 days until the ceasefire with Germany ends, because the Eastern war never ended in a formal peace deal. That's why Boris Savinkov is sidelined and the people behind him contact the Germans about a firm peace.

    Can you explain how this is different from someone saying, "You're telling me that Germany managed to survive 6 years in World War 2 despite taking on all 4 of the world global powers at the time? They barely managed to survive 4 years in WWI where they had significantly more land and more powerful allies (however bad Austria, the Ottomans, and Bulgaria were they were much more useful than the Italians, Hungarians, and Romanians), but when Germany's in a weaker state it somehow lasts longer?"
    As weird as it sounds, extremely militarized states last longer and are more devastating in a war than less militarized states, and when that militarism is powered by extreme revanchism (as is sure to be the case, especially for Russia) that's going to be all the more the case.

    • @guyfromcollege
      @guyfromcollege  หลายเดือนก่อน

      Well in Germany's case for WW2 they conquered a lot more land that allowed them to keep going for longer lasting off the spoils, but the second weltkrieg doesn't have that aspect so it doesn't work as well.

    • @thejollyviking8083
      @thejollyviking8083 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      @@guyfromcollege I believe in the lore of Kalterkrieg, the Internationale takes over the Rhineland and the Lowlands very early on in the war, and, with the attention of the Reichspakt divided between Internationale and Russia, held onto those territories until 1943.
      France actually fell in 1945 and Russia was simply stalemated while the Union of Britain stubbornly held out even after the war was lost.
      In other words, I see where you're going with this, but I think that the timeline of the war actually works out relatively well.

    • @guyfromcollege
      @guyfromcollege  หลายเดือนก่อน

      I see what you're saying, but I don't think just taking the rhineland and Belgium could make up for their lack of colonies and trade to be able to fuel a war economy for over 5 years. Britain especially holding out for 7 is impossible they'd have to immediately tap out after France did.

    • @thejollyviking8083
      @thejollyviking8083 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@guyfromcollege I think it depends on a variety of economic factors, including trade, allies, natural resources, the ability of the country to provide its own food, etc.
      You could very well be right, but I do think it's a significantly more complex issue which isn't resolved merely by comparing their state to that of WWI (I'm on a very unfavored side of the historical debate on the topic, but I actually view colonies, especially the African colonies, as a drain on resources rather than a net benefit, but since I admit my position isn't widely agreed on I'll forego citing it).

    This is why Cold War mods don't work for HOI4. The average HOI4 player wants actual wars and action, not volunteers and lend lease in the combat side. The political side can be fun, but without any kind of war, it will still feel boring. And if you will try to make a Cold War mod and make it that Germany has a Civil War after a certain someone dies, you will get called out for being "unrealistic" because actually Germany or any other huge and industrialised nation won't fall into a Civil War, because it is impossible due to its complex economy and society. What I am trying to say is that "realistic" Cold War mods will always be bland, while "unrealistic" ones will be, but you can't go without realising the plain stupidity of what you are reading in the events and doing politically.

    • @sprintfoxy1240
      @sprintfoxy1240 29 วันที่ผ่านมา +3

      Problem with KalterKrieg (KK) is that its a cold war mod without the war nor the cold, its just "stare at map and spot the differences", and also in general you dont even get to build up your own country since for that you need 1 quadrillion oil for each building in queue. TNO does this well, only problem is not with the whole unrealistic thing but the backward way of forcing "realism" in a axis near full victory scenario. Cold war mods are possible, it just need good mechanics (not overcomplicated economics, add necessary technology for the timeframe and dont railroad too much the politics) which for reason i dont get nearly all cold war mods fails at and TNO is the only exception i found.
