Better Call Saul is the prequel to the award-winning series Breaking Bad, set six years before Saul Goodman (Bob Odenkirk) became Walter White's lawyer. When we meet him, the man who will become Saul Goodman is known as Jimmy McGill, a small-time lawyer searching for his destiny, and, more immediately, hustling to make ends meet. Working alongside, and often against, Jimmy is "fixer" Mike Erhmantraut (Jonathan Banks), a beloved character introduced in Breaking Bad. The series will track Jimmy's transformation into Saul Goodman, the man who puts "criminal" in "criminal lawyer."

Howard is such a character to feel sorry for. He never wanted to screw Jimmy, and I’m convinced he wanted him to be a lawyer after he got graduated. But his loyalty and respect to Chuck really screwed him over. Howard always liked Jimmy for being good with people and having the creativity, he knew of his potential from day one, but was never given a chance
When he asked Chuck to leave HHM, he clearly had enough of Chuck and knew that he was wrong in screwing Jimmy, he almost wanted to apologise to Jimmy, but knowing at the same time that Jimmy wouldn’t forgive him.

I love how everyone can see that Hamlin wasn't actually the bad guy here. Jimmy and Kim dislike him, but it's repeatedly shown that he has no malice or spite in him whatsoever for all parties, and just wants to do right by his firm and his father's legacy, his mentor, and maybe do the right thing in the other situations. He's not necessarily likeable, but very much a relatable everyman that one can empathise with.
And I wrote this comment when I was at this episode, without knowledge of what came after. I think we can also agree that in hindsight, Hamlin was truly one of the most moral characters in the whole show. One wonders how he felt at 2:34, being told that he's offloading his guilt so he can 'feel okay', like he's never known anything but 'easy', while we know he's been dealing with debt, depression and a broken marriage for god knows how long.

The thing to bear in mind here is that these are the two characters that had the most interactions with the McGill brothers, separately…so it’s especially interesting when these two interact with each other.
Initially, Howard had vented his pent-up frustration he couldn’t voice with Chuck; and took it out on Kim…who had been trying to vouch for Jimmy.
It’s safe to say that since that point, there has been some friction between these two…but because they’re both FAR more straight-laced than the volatile brothers; it never boiled-over until now.
You can count the number of scenes between Howard & Kim alone on one hand…it went from professional, begrudging respect, tension, anger, indignation…and then, well…the bad one.

Lots of people saying that Howard isn’t the bad guy in this, because he wants to fix it at the end.

Seeing now the end of Part 1 of Season 6, it so greatly illustrates for me the depth of how this all impacted Kim. Back to back, these 2 scenes play with 100% congruence.

While I understand Kim's point overall, she went a little overboard. Jimmy has been caring for Chuck for years while Rebecca has seen Chuck twice in the last 2 years. That's not a fair comparison. She's convinced herself that Howard is the bad guy, while all Howard wants to do is confide in the person supposedly closest to Chuck and apologize for his role in it. Howard is a good guy and doesn't deserve what's coming in season 6

    • @Sophie-vq1xw
      @Sophie-vq1xw 2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

Big time! I read it also as a slight emotional/grief ridden slip on Kim’s side, especially given that she’s usually (in earlier seasons) so pragmatic and professionally withdrawn, I’d argue that between her and Jimmy she’s the more Utilitarian of them while Jimmy’s the more generally emotionally driven. So this unleashing of rage and personal feeling is striking in her development. And as the series goes on she starts to throw her hat in the emotional ring more often, more convinced of her own conviction

and he doesn't do anything when rebecca gets all of chuck's money, when jimmy was the one who took care of him, he could have made it right, but he doesn't, because it doesn't matter to him, he basically, can't understand other people, and is all about himself, thinking how jimmy would feel about this theory of his is not a complex thing to do, but his thinking capabilities have not developed that way

@@saivamshi7091 I mean it's literally illegal to alter someone's wishes in a will post-mortem, provided nothing illegal was stated. Howard legitimately thinks he's the reason for Chuck's relapse, not knowing that it was actually Jimmy behind the scenes

While Jimmy's problem is that he has a conman dark side in Saul...
Howard's problem is that hes too good of a lawyer. So he sturggles with straight up unsolvable problems.

The show never really demonstrates that Howard actually is a good lawyer though. His role at the firm mostly consists of personnel management and client relations rather than legal strategy. Howard is a natural fit as the the "face" of HHM because of his name, good looks, and charm, but he doesn't seem to be especially talented as a lawyer or even particularly intelligent in general. The only reason he made partner at HHM is because his dad founded the firm. Nepotism can take mediocre people very far in life.

I think everybody realized that Chuck truly despised Jimmy in this scene. This will was written a long time ago and any recent amendments to it would have been thrown out due to his mental state. So this happened well before he got sick. Even back then, 5k was all he thought of Jimmy. And a letter about how haappy he is that he's working in a mail room where he belongs.

A lot of people feel bad for Howard, and look. In season 6, the guy gets absolutely destroyed, and that's not fair to anybody. But Howard is an arrogant, self-interested man who routinely takes out or enables petty grudges. He put impediments in Jimmy's way on Chuck's behalf, all because Chuck couldn't accept that Jimmy might be capable of change. Chuck couldn't accept that his version of a lawyer isn't the only one, and that there is, in fact, room in the world for a fairly well-adjusted Jimmy McGill in Albuquerque; after all, said Jimmy McGill probably doesn't feel desperate or angry enough to do a lot of the bad stuff he later gets up to. So, Howerd enabled Chuck's personal vendetta. He punished Kim after Kim tried to get back in his good graces by giftwrapping Sandpiper for HHM. But that still wasn't good enough. He made a point to humiliate Kim during a lunch meeting for absolutely no reason. Blamed Kim for Jimmy's commercial even though Kim honestly believed - because Jimmy misled her - that it was all aboveboard. She was punished because she believed a lie and didn't think to verify it, and that punishment continued after she brought her boss a huge client. To me, this isn't just firm business, the way Howard claims, and that's another thing that sort of seals it for me here. He is self-serving; if it benefits Howard, and Howard's interests, he'll do it. I'm not saying the man's a monster, because he absolutely isn't. But let's be real. He earned every single word of this tear-down.

@@crazymanglocrazy6788 then your anger is misplaced. Howard isn't perfect but he truly thought he was doing the right thing, because he had no idea it was actually Jimmy who pushed Chuck over the edge and Kim doesn't know that either. Howard was guilt ridden for something that wasnt his fault and Jimmy just lets him keep thinking that because Jimmy is a coward.
She comes in with fire and brimstone and full of self righteousness that's entirely unjustifiable and dumps her anger onto him the same way Jimmy does. Howard in the end was actually a decent human being. Should he have stuck up to Chuck more when wanting jimmy to become a team nember? Absolutely, but he didnt deserve this onslaught when Jimmy is the source of all of this pain. But that's also the point. When Jimmy is in the picture people get destroyed. Plus what they do to Howard is unforgivable
Sorry for the rant, this scene just breaks my heart because Howard was shown as the antagonist a lot of the time when in reality he has the best moral compass in the show. Better than Jimmy and even Kim
