I tested this the theory in the video and experienced similar results. I am pretty sure it starts random, therefore you might want to start with a dummy piece. First time testing I got the tempering I wanted on a dummy,... great. It cycled correctly twice on the dummy piece. Then I ignorantly put in a real piece and it tempered wrong (important, the counting starts here, therefore 1), threw a second dummy in cycled for 4 more "wrong" tempers, got to a count of 5. Then I put back in the first real piece and got a weak correct role (6), re-tempered then got a strong correct role (7). This was me trying to get close damage on a ring, so offensive, then natural finesse, which has 4 options the game can choose from. This experience may not be the same on others tampers that provide more or less options to tamper (3 or 5 for ex). Maybe there is a pity system, maybe it rotates between tempers fairly regularly when it is supposed to be random, therefore a bug. Anyways I figured the rough formula is: 5 wrong, 1 weak, then 1 strong. I like how it rhymes :P, yoour experience may differ between every try, but getting a dummy piece and using it when you have "bad luck" has worked for me.
I’ve found 1 triple GA two handed mace. 1. I rolled it to be universal at the beginning of the season. I’m so glad I did because I’ve changed builds 3 times now and I still use it on bash barb. Its strength, max life, flat damage, flat damage, 40% 9600 damage chance. My first build was dust devils. It would’ve been trash out the gate. The fact the good triples are so rare after days of playing on just my barb. If people are getting this many triples I guess I need to get good. This was before I knew you could roll crit with the rogue.
Thing is, I get what they want with the tempering system and it makes sense for common gear. But there NEEDS to be an item, hell make it an uber-unique rarity item that lets you reset temper chance. Making good triple greater-affix items so rare and then having a high chance that you just brick that item is awful game design. I've had 2 total, both bricked and honestly it's completely killed my desire to play the game.
I have noticed that way as well but nothing fancy. What I noticed was sometime Temper Items was GOING my way for like 3-5 items in row. then It bricked my items 3-5 time in row. back forth. so yeah it makes sense. I 100% believe it
This reminds me of how single player games have health really low but its higher behind the scenes so you feel more excited at low health, these type of techniques have been used many times to add suspense
Lmao how the game supposed to know what of the 5 random stats u even want xD this is not how piti works..... pit get exactly what u want .... this is all random .
if there was a pity mechanic, I don't think it would work by "crossing gear items". It would make more sense that if there was 7 temper roles on 1 item of gear, and you rolled the same stat 6 times, on the 7th roll it would exclude that stat from the selection pool, thereby increasing chances for all the other stats. Something like this as a "pity mechanic" on a specific gear item would make more sense than just rolling the same stat across many different pieces of gear of the same slot.
That's what you'd expect but with Blizz you never know. They could have just set a pity check but then forget to reset it on a new item. They've made bigger mistakes.
I think people are just getting to comfortable with getting what they want, just accept that it certain things ur gonna have to fail against a boss and that they dont need nerfing and that if you dont get the right temper or masterwork hit you wanted then you need to go farm again. Thats the whole point of these games.
Their are few people on this game like Rob who have time to play for 15hours straight and get lvl 100 across 3-4 characters in the first 2 weeks of a new season. By moaning that you’re not happy you are fucking over half the population of the game.
I think there is such a thing as pity mechanic for D4. I ran maybe around 300 duriel with 1 Uber dropped. And for some reason, within 20 minutes of doing duriel, 4 different Ubers dropped. I kid you not. This was season 3.
For a pity mechanic to be a thing in this case, the game would have to be looking at what skill you have leveled up, and assuming that the matching temper is your goal, and adjusting rates based on that. So it would be interesting to see tempering roll data on a bunch of items initially while specced into Bash, then respec completely into a different build like HOTA that also has the temper you want on that same temper recipe, and do an equivalent amount of tempering after that. If suddenly the outcome changes, it's confirmed.
It's not pity. It's just that human's notion of randomness is biased in that they expect more alternation, or shorter runs, than are in true randomness. So most Human Interacting software does not follow randomness but has some weight adjusting distribution to feel "more" random but actually are less random. An extremely obvious example for this are music playlists on random never repeating the same song/(the same order) multiple times.
Blizzard should make a mechanic with some additional stone that can be used in order to choose specific affix on the most powerfull weapons with greater affixes.
After a couple hours of messing around with temping after watching this video I can confirm the pity mechanic is a thing, I’ve bricked WAYY less items and half the time I get a perfect roll cuz the game thinks I’m just that down bad. After 5 tries if u don’t get the hit that time there’s a really high chance it’ll be the next one
Or just have it work like the Enchanting system where I can choose to keep sorta-useful temper, but still try for the W and not have sorta-useful overwritten by useless. Or even better LET US CHOOSE THE AFFIX rather than stacking RNG on RNG on top of yet more RNG.
@@drenath yeah hopefully they update the system I don’t want it to be easier I mainly just want a way to get more rerolls. That way we have a new super rare currency to hunt for that can be used sparingly on god items that unfortunately bricked during tempering
I've bricked soooo many great items from tempering. Such a pain in the ass. Wish they'd give us 10 trys per item and allow us to keep or change like they do with affexes
dude i love your energy, great fun, tempering put a lot of fun back into the game, everyone loves gamble/crafting, everyone hates a brick but that's what makes a win so much more worth it
This is assuming heavily that there's a weight system applied to the tempering mods. It's much more likely that tempering is just an even chance across every mod because how would the game even know what mod you're trying to temper in order to give you "pity" odds.
Well it's very similar to cooldown reduction on amulets and helmets in this game. Ever notice how those two particular stats are very, very, very rarely raw stats on items that drop? I almost never see a neck drop with CDR, or a helmet. I almost always have to roll those stats on myself. My view of this since the original launch of D4 is that there is a weighting system to the affixes that are "most desirable in general" such as CDR. This would just be the same Dev team applying the same logic to a sister system in the game. Seems plausible to me.
@@steveocho You absolutely can't know that until Blizzard releases the actual data on tempering or someone in the community does proper testing with a very large sample size.
@@xaelek4222 the sample size is everywhere: your personal tempering, videos like this, other people voicing the same opinion. You don't need to run through a sample size of 10000 tempers to figure out that there's a large imbalance on what rolls for tempering.
farming 80million gold so you can enchant an item and not get what you want after wasting all that gold... makes me not wanna keep playing the game for the rest of the day honestly
ive been saying for years, devolpers know what build you are going for (programmed) when you enter things like tempering - if you make two characters (say druid) 1 pulv and one hurrican3 if you want hurricane on weapons use the pulverize build - you will get hurricane half they time the same other way around - they decide the minute you enter whether you will get the affix you need and its weighted against you unless you fool it
The video is crap, half of the area with the roll is covered by the camera, the other half is covered by chat!!! I didn’t understand anything at all what to do in the end!
It's tin foil. Because I've salvaged 4 times in a row not ever getting the affix I needed once. Tempering rolls are like roulette, the last roll doesn't affect the next roll. This would imply that tempering is like black jack, where the cards on the table can help you predict the next card... No. Each roll is independent. Because I've gotten fucked 4 items in a row and Billions and billions in gold. As Im typing this, within the last 30 minutes, I salvaged 3 amulets worth 10B combined trying to get fire damage over time ONCE.... haven't gotten it yet. Tempering is the dumbest shit on earth.
I used all my tries and failed to get movement speed on my boots where I had 1/3 chance. Not that it proves anything, but I don't believe pity mechanic where you have multiple choices with very limited number of tries results in a meaningful increase to a chance of you getting the one tempering you want. I know pity mechanics exist in games, but I feel like it's copium here. But would be nice to hear from Blizz and see if they can confirm that.
I mean it's statistics, if you roll a dice for X amount of times not getting snake eyes, while the likelihood doesn't change for each roll, statistically you're more likely to see snake eyes at roll 11 compared to rolls 1-10 assuming you never saw snake eyes.
This is gonna suck when you’re trying to get that max roll and the game says “I see what you’re trying to do” and then doesn’t roll your temper again 🤣
tempering is too volatile in my opinion, you finally get an item with good stats, you roll it, it bricks or rolls the low end of what you want and you still not happy. I have had good "luck" with tempering maybe 5 times since season 4 started. Honestly kind of wish they dd not put a limit on how much we can roll it, or at least doubled it
The lengths people have to go before arriving at the realization that tempering is GARBAGE, because bricking items is. In a RNG-loaded game, i dont want to destroy my good item finds. D2 still got the bast loot system. An item drops, if the rolls are good.. youre lucky. If not youre not. Loot 1.0 in Diablo S4 is amazing, i really think so, until it comes to tempering and masterworking. That stuff is just rancid garbage. Its solely deisgned to keep you around for longer ( more likely to buy stuff on the shop ) and not to make more fun.
Has anyone actually figured out the + skills on amulets and how they actually upgrade works i got a greater affix hellbent commanders amulet that came at +3 upgraded to +4 at masterwork 7 didnt hit the crit at 4 or 8 and was curious if at 12 it would go to +5 or if i should just restart dont wanna waste a bunch of mats
1 crit makes a natural +2 to +4, and you get 1 extra from greater affix. If you hit it twice and upgrade it to 12 it will be even 6. The +25% message on skills does not really make sense, or at least I don't understand the rounding ^^
@@Tunichtgut789 yeah I don't get it at all I had my fractured winterglass with +2 conjuration skills it crit at 4 upgraded to +3 at rank 5 then I took it all the way to 12 and it stayed at +3
@@MrPiffy Hmm. I was 80% sure a +2 with 1 crit would be 4 on level 12. The only thing I can Guarantee is that Golemmasterie Greaterafix 3 (natural 2) becomes with 1 crit a +5 and with 2 crits a +6 in level 12
every +30% you get a +1 so at Masterwork Rank 7 you get a +1 even without a crit with one crit you get your +2 at Masterwork Rank 9 without crits you get a total of +45% at 12 so only +1 so maybe redo Masterwork in lower levels untill you get the first crit
Hi rob ty for all the content, I want to ask you something I cant find the bash cleaves affix on the blacksmith says bash increase damage and not the bash cleaves. Where I can farm it or is bugged? I hope u can help me ty from Chile
Isn't this just regular RNG? Assuming all tempering manuals all follow a discrete uniform distribution, i.e. all affixes within a manual have equal chance and are independent of each other, then it follows that the more times you have not seen an affix, the more likely you are going to see that affix just because over a large number of attempts, you should get roughly the same number of each affix. It's been a long time since I last did statistics. But couldn't you simply test this against the hypothesis that the results of consecutive tempering attempts (using the same manual) follows a geometric distribution? If the test passes then there is no pitty system, and it's all just confirmation bias.
A dice roll or coin toss is an independent event meaning it is not influenced by previous attempts. Each roll has the same probabilities as any other regardless of what’s happened before. You can calculate the likelihood of a series of results, but it still doesn’t make any future event more likely.
Leveling up, I tried to get Fire resistance across 5 different items and got it after 26 consecutive attempts in quick succession, so idk about this so-called pity mechanic lol...
К сожалению эта теория от банального не понимания теории вероятности. Шанс выпадения красного на рулетке после выпадения черного АБСОЛЮТНО такой же как шанс выпадения красного после 40 подряд выпавшего черного.
Tbh if it's true or not the tempering itself is great but the limited trys is just stupid as hell why they don't make the first 5rolls free and then what ever make it cost pit mats or gold
There is no "pity" system. it's just that human's notion of randomness is biased in that they expect more alternation, or shorter runs, than are in true randomness. So most Human Interacting software does not follow randomness but has some weight adjusting distribution to feel "more" random but actually are less random. an extremely obvious example for this are music playlists on random never repeating the same song/(the same order) multiple times.

I was trying to temper fire res on 1 item for my wifes necro. Failed with 3 items. 15 mf temper tries and couldn't get ONE fire! This temper is broken pos. Edit: Took 17 temper tries to get just ONE fire res!
My personal experience, I missed vulnerable dmg 4 weapons in a roll for my heartseeker rogue, and then, I hit vunl dmg 4 times back to back. So this could be pure RNG or Blizzard is watching lol
I've checked this with almost a thousand trials this is just copium. There was no meaningful increase of chance at 5th attempt after 4 fails, just the same 1/n
today i bricked 14 2h hammers trying to get bash and close dmg ... 12 with 1 greater affix and 2 with 2 ... i mean like wtf ... i didnt use the pity mechanic, cause i thought after 8 bricked weapons the one with 2 affixes should work, so it was kinda semi pity ... and i failed ...
Also I wonder ... isn't it trivial that the chance increases with every failed attempt? I mean statistically its not probable to fail many times in a row ;)
I'm having a lot of fun with WW and Dust Devils, Pit 60 for now. Cleaning the Pit in 3 mins and then a little longer on the bosses. Based on your first WW DD video but with a few adaptations. If you can, please explore that build, I think it has potential! Cheers
Yes please Rob Dust Devils is the most fun barb build I've played. Can you look to optimize and perfect this? I'm also struggling around level 60 Pits due to lack of damage and lack of being able to survive.
I also struggle at 64 with the double swing variant (my WW struggle at 40 it cant kill the boss) Dont know how to progress further... I'm armor caped, i have all my 70% res, my tempering are not so Bad and my masterworking IS between 3 and 6 But After pit 64 i cant tank damage anymore and i dont have the damage on the boss, it take age to kill and i still make mistake on long fight
I call bullshit on this. 80 rolls to get the one mod I was looking for when there only are 4 options aka a 25% chance. Not to forget, the devs claim, that there is no special weighting. Everything allegedly has the same chance. Bullshit.
Need some real science with a large sample size, including how many times the affix you want popped on the item you didn't care about. It could just be different weightings on stats or just basic probability of luck. It is hard to tell without a large sample size.
I dont know how many Items I already bricked, still hope Blizzard is looking into this, but here is an idea on how to increase your chance! Switching Rogue to temper Crit Damage for our Barbarian King.

Will we ever reach a higher level of copium than this? debatable.
Ive never even gotten a decent 2 GA item myself, but bricking 2 3 GA's must suck indeed.
Yes i have 3 greater affix in 3 weapons all brick I can’t do this anymore…
ive test this and it does work. got crit hit dmg on 5th try on main weapon after 4 fails in a row on other weapon
I just say: "I invoke the spirit of Lilith, Daughter of Hatred" and I've yet to brick a single 3GA item! (I haven't tempered a single 3GA item)
Just did it for a perfect Necro amulet. Thanks for the info!
Lmao how the game supposed to know what of the 5 random stats u even want xD this is not how piti works..... pit get exactly what u want .... this is all random .
This shit is real that's why it's not RNG it's weighted odds in different situations
if there was a pity mechanic, I don't think it would work by "crossing gear items".
Everyone saying this is Copium does not have any knowledge in video games and programming. this is a thing in many games and this is a true thing.
i rolled 25times without seeing on upgraded bash , im cursed
Same
It’s like getting the ray gun out of the mystery box. You have to do certain arbitrary things in game to raise the chances.
I think there is such a thing as pity mechanic for D4. I ran maybe around 300 duriel with 1 Uber dropped. And for some reason, within 20 minutes of doing duriel, 4 different Ubers dropped. I kid you not. This was season 3.
I like the tempering mechanic, it's fine. The cap on rolls is stupid though, I've bricked so many potential upgrades in the last few day's
If suddenly the outcome changes, it's confirmed.
you're overthinking this. it would just track what temper you haven't gotten.
I just want them to add a way to reset temper re rolls like an item as rare as a resplendent spark that gives an item 5 more rerolls.
Wish they'd give us 10 trys per item and allow us to keep or change like they do with affexes
dude i love your energy, great fun, tempering put a lot of fun back into the game, everyone loves gamble/crafting, everyone hates a brick but that's what makes a win so much more worth it
11min video for something that can be summed up in less than 30 seconds. Interesting choice.
This is assuming heavily that there's a weight system applied to the tempering mods. It's much more likely that tempering is just an even chance across every mod because how would the game even know what mod you're trying to temper in order to give you "pity" odds.
Tempering is definitely not even.
@@d4mephisto there is def a weighting system on stat roll but not sure how it transfers over to tempering
@@xaelek4222 the sample size is everywhere: your personal tempering, videos like this, other people voicing the same opinion. You don't need to run through a sample size of 10000 tempers to figure out that there's a large imbalance on what rolls for tempering.
So what if you really get the right stat on the trash items ? Do you just lose the supposed pity, cry (again) and start over ?
duh
@@rob0matic ty for your participation
farming 80million gold so you can enchant an item and not get what you want after wasting all that gold... makes me not wanna keep playing the game for the rest of the day honestly
LOL same
@@quicksilver6825 endgame is literally just throwing gold at your gear. You know it takes 40million just to fully masterwork one piece of gear?
ive been saying for years, devolpers know what build you are going for (programmed) when you enter things like tempering - if you make two characters (say druid) 1 pulv and one hurrican3 if you want hurricane on weapons use the pulverize build - you will get hurricane half they time the same other way around - they decide the minute you enter whether you will get the affix you need and its weighted against you unless you fool it
Is bullshit.
Got corpse explosion damage 6 times in a row. Didn't want it.
lmfao
Using rogue to put critical DMG on all barbarian gear + grandfather is a good idea for bash barbarian?
I guess for Bash not, bash dmg comes from the bash cleaver tempering, but you can maybe combine it.
Will you be doing another update on the double swing build? Thanks for your work
I used all my tries and failed to get movement speed on my boots where I had 1/3 chance.
I didnt get , how you changed the hero and still have the same inventory ?
They need to make a reset option like they do when you master work.. its so hard to get greater affix gear to just have it ruined by tempering 🤬
tempering is too volatile in my opinion, you finally get an item with good stats, you roll it, it bricks or rolls the low end of what you want and you still not happy. I have had good "luck" with tempering maybe 5 times since season 4 started. Honestly kind of wish they dd not put a limit on how much we can roll it, or at least doubled it
Its like Roulette. I guess you have every time the same odds.. you can get 7 Times "red" in a row but the 8th time is also 50% Chance to get black.
The only thing I can Guarantee is that Golemmasterie Greaterafix 3 (natural 2) becomes with 1 crit a +5 and with 2 crits a +6 in level 12
every +30% you get a +1 so at Masterwork Rank 7 you get a +1 even without a crit
with one crit you get your +2 at Masterwork Rank 9
without crits you get a total of +45% at 12 so only +1 so maybe redo Masterwork in lower levels untill you get the first crit
Hi rob ty for all the content, I want to ask you something I cant find the bash cleaves affix on the blacksmith says bash increase damage and not the bash cleaves. Where I can farm it or is bugged? I hope u can help me ty from Chile

On today's episode of "Probabilities for Schmucks"..
It’s true, I’ve got all the affixes I want on all my gear
These developers couldn't code their way out of a paper bag. This is far too complex for them to do, and even if they tried, it wouldn't be reliable.
Only theory ha ha ha ha uh
So if I make a rougue I can roll crit in n my barb weapons ??
Leveling up, I tried to get Fire resistance across 5 different items and got it after 26 consecutive attempts in quick succession, so idk about this so-called pity mechanic lol...
Blizz devs are either watching this and laughing their asses off or are wondering how you got this inside information lol
225mil main hand just saved by this one
К сожалению эта теория от банального не понимания теории вероятности. Шанс выпадения красного на рулетке после выпадения черного АБСОЛЮТНО такой же как шанс выпадения красного после 40 подряд выпавшего черного.
Tbh if it's true or not the tempering itself is great but the limited trys is just stupid as hell why they don't make the first 5rolls free and then what ever make it cost pit mats or gold
What do you do if you do get it on it on the dummy item lol
There is no "pity" system. it's just that human's notion of randomness is biased in that they expect more alternation, or shorter runs, than are in true randomness. So most Human Interacting software does not follow randomness but has some weight adjusting distribution to feel "more" random but actually are less random.
an extremely obvious example for this are music playlists on random never repeating the same song/(the same order) multiple times.
Well idk it feels to me like the opposite. I’ve rolled on several items I desperately needed only to get the same affix 4-5 times that I don’t even need at all
I was trying to temper fire res on 1 item for my wifes necro. Failed with 3 items. 15 mf temper tries and couldn't get ONE fire! This temper is broken pos.
Edit: Took 17 temper tries to get just ONE fire res!
If there is a pitty mechanic , then they don't seem to feel sorry for me because i brick almost everything
No harm in doing it, unless you count the materials and gold that is...
I’ve gotten damage to distant enemies 7x in a row that bricked 2 great rings for my Barb… no pity system for me.
It's the same for me and I can't ger why you can roll distance damage on barbs. That's just stupid
My personal experience, I missed vulnerable dmg 4 weapons in a roll for my heartseeker rogue, and then, I hit vunl dmg 4 times back to back. So this could be pure RNG or Blizzard is watching lol
Didn’t work for me. I burnt 3 pieces of gear for corpse tendrils size.
This reminds me of useing "pathways" in d3 to get primals.
I just want to pick my own tempering that would be way better than RNG.
Needs to be pity drops of ubbers atleast on the tormented 200 versions ran over 50 last night still zero ubber uniques
No they are uber uniques for a reason
Bad luck , got 3 Ubers on in 10 tormented runs.
Thats just sad 😢
i feel u man, im at 36 tormented kills 0 uber uniq
@@ATST990 ME TOO
I've checked this with almost a thousand trials this is just copium. There was no meaningful increase of chance at 5th attempt after 4 fails, just the same 1/n
Why are you using a Rogue to roll barb gear? Is it because of a pity mechanic that is more likely to roll +crit damage if the character is a Rogue?
Barb can't roll crit damage. Rogue can.
We are reaching gacha levels with item roll manipulation.
D4 is the new gacha game on the market, lol.
today i bricked 14 2h hammers trying to get bash and close dmg ... 12 with 1 greater affix and 2 with 2 ... i mean like wtf ...
i didnt use the pity mechanic, cause i thought after 8 bricked weapons the one with 2 affixes should work, so it was kinda semi pity ... and i failed ...
Doesnt work for me, i will continue bricking the normal way.
Its fun to think about it but to make it statistically relevant you probably have to try it on a 100 items 😅
Also I wonder ... isn't it trivial that the chance increases with every failed attempt? I mean statistically its not probable to fail many times in a row ;)
It's not 'gatcha' or 'pity' that's called 'pseudo random' and it's in almost all video games. without it game feels really unfair
nope...
not working for me !
at the end of days, all depend on RnG
Can anyone tell me how to farm Marksman Fenisse? Is there any specific character or boss or out level or just random??
You need to be on a rouge, i found all my finesse on lord zir, and helltide
Tempering system needs a rework... Give us at LEAST 10 rolls per item AND the option to keep our current roll. Just like affix enchanting
Whats the theory of rolling the same category 4 times in a row. That has happened often. so much for pity.
I also struggle at 64 with the double swing variant (my WW struggle at 40 it cant kill the boss)
Dont know how to progress further... I'm armor caped, i have all my 70% res, my tempering are not so Bad and my masterworking IS between 3 and 6
But After pit 64 i cant tank damage anymore and i dont have the damage on the boss, it take age to kill and i still make mistake on long fight
I don't buy it. I just tried 20 different items and I can't see any more statical tilting other than a standard probity distribution.
