It Is never too late to start building your brand 5, It's okay to say NO to clients 6. Get as much education as you can - TH-cam, Instagram, Free classes, Product Knowledge, Hair Shows, etc.
the only reason i feel like i’m learning anything in beauty school is because i’m taking the initiative to ask and to learn how to do things, stepping out of my comfort zone and saying yes to any kind of client who walks in as a learning opportunity
I assisted at a high end salon while still in school. Learned how to shampoo & give the best head massages. Went to a small 4 stylist salon and got to be a Junior stylist and assistant. So I got paid to help the other stylist while learning so much. Finally I ended up as a commission based stylist in a locally owned salon. This is by far the best way to do it if you are able. I knew NOTHING coming out of school. I never even opened my clippers. Thank you for this awesome video & allowing us to help each other 💛
I’ve been a professional hairstylist for 5years now and when I first graduated I worked at a salon that didn’t have many stylist so I would work 7-8 hrs by myself. I didn’t apprentice or assist at all I just went straight into it and I’m happy I did because I learned so much. The salon I worked at wasn’t a high end salon so it was a good place to mess up if I did and learn from it. I hate when ppl complain about not being a good hairstylist because they didn’t assist or anything like that when, yes, it does help to assist but it’s also up to you to keep learning and keep wanting to learn. I would watch videos and practice non-stop on mannequins because I knew I needed to get my shit together working alone for 7-8 hrs so I had no one to help me. I’m a visual & hands on learner so I guess that’s why I learned quick and I also work really well under pressure.
I feel like I had such a good beauty school experience, and can hardly believe that some schools don’t equip you to embrace the industry when you leave. I went to a small school with less than 10 students and 3 instructors. I learned so much, and on top of that I interned with my friend (who convinced me to go to beauty school) almost my whole way through school. I’m still terrified about the different aspects of the business side and building my own clientele; but overall I’m so excited to get started and so blessed to have had the experience I did.

I wish there was a better solution or a renovation of beauty school. I just graduated and feel like I know NOTHING but I don’t have the ability to assist and learn bc I need to pay my bills and most assistant get paid very little or nothing at all. Not sure what the point of paying for school is if I can’t do the basics after graduation

The more I research school and watch every god damn YT story of what school is like, I’m starting to whole heartedly believe beauty school is a scam. It seems like a school loan buisness who set up shop in poorer type town so they can prey on the underprivileged who have huge hopes of a better future. Heck even the financial director is built in. Maybe it just fine to go to a votech and save the $, just get the license, and try and learn as much as you can after or in a good salon. What’s also interesting to me is not everyone is made for this. I don’t get what ppl r doing here. Lol. You kinda have to be a natural born artists. I noticed hispanic people are amazing artists whether hair makeup or tattooing. It’s gotta be in the blood. Anyways have a good day! Hope I don’t get scammed. Lol.
I have watched your hair videos in the past Jamie and I love how all of the toners blend in so pretty. I am 49 years old and I am considering starting cosmetology school in the next couple of months. I am nervous to start in this crazy time with the pandemic going on. I hope I am making the right choice because employment and everything is so up in the air. The fact that I am older does scare me a little too because I am not savvy with technology. Thanks for the information about branding and putting your business out there. Hi Kristen, theres no wrong age, and youre still young! The ladies I worked with at my last salon were 20 years older than you and still kicking butt. Youve got a long road ahead of you to be a hairstylist. As for Covid....even if we see a second wave, it wont be around forever. Now is a good time to go to school!
I’ve been doing hair for 36 years and I’m still learning new things!! When you stop learning and don’t get excited about new products and techniques-that’s when you get burned out!! When I went to school we did shampoo sets and perms!! I knew zip about color!! I learned to foil from other younger stylists and beauty shows and I soaked up any education I could on color!! I am a master stylist and coloring is my strongest skill!! I love u tube and any beauty blogs!! I learned how to do a man’s fade hc from u tube!! Now my fades rock!! I still love what I do!( my knees don’t love it so much tho!). Wear good shoes!! Stay on your mats!!

I am paying over 20k to go to a brand name school and my experience is awful they have gone through numerous teachers that refuse to teach (even state board ) everything I’ve learned is from educators I’ve found online . I’m glad there might be some hope left for me cause this has been an awful start
I'm seeing a lot of comments of people that feel like they didn't learn anything from their beauty school. Cosmetology school is basically giving us the basics for us to create our own art, to build up our skills over the years. I'm sure most of you left your school's at least knowing 50% more of what you guys knew before, and of course we'll learn more things we didn't know before. We never stop learning as artists. 💕
Let's face it - beauty school is based around passing the state board. Once you are out in the real world, it's so much more. I've had my license for a year this month - I am still not confident and am getting frustrated!
Heidi Ledford same!! My school was basically 90% rollersets and perms and everything else was left for us to figure out on our own. It was embarrassing (although myself and everyone in my class begged for highlighting/clipper cutting to be taught)
I started off in a high end salon, and it ended up closing down. Then I went to another high end salon and it closed down too. I thought high end would mean more money and more clients. I was wrong. They tend to be more appointment based and slower with walk-ins. So then I went to Hair Cuttery and I’m LOVING IT so far! I wish I started there fresh out of school, you learn SO much and it gets your prepared for the long run. You build a clientele fast and have so many opportunities to grow and have raises! Plus the commission is better when you start there!
My beauty school was TRASH! We barely learned anything about cuts and coloring. We learned hella basic application techniques for coloring and we didn’t learn highlights AT ALL and we only learned blunt cuts.
Hi best tip is educate urself constantly! TH-cam has endless information that is free! I am 60 years old and my average age client is 25! Have been doing it for 42 years and still learning 😵😁🙄😎
You’re a maverick. I’m not in beauty school, I’m just learning how to do my own hair because many stylists screw it up. Your video is what they should all be doing. I wish some stylists had said no to me before messing up my hair. I wish they’d continue to learn and stop being complacent & stuck in their ways because it really shows in their work. I wish my stylist of years didn’t choose & conform to working at a burn & turn salon (Salon prices, Great-cuts quality haircuts). Her quality was once so good & strategic & now I’m out Learning to do it myself or find another. Another thing that might fit into the building your brand category would be to generate quality online reviews. Much of today’s consumer choices are determined by reading online reviews it ahead of time so it’s critical that their work is reflected in the reviews. You’re teaching us clients here too. Omg I am you, you are me! I graduated beauty sch in 2k08 i already knew it wasn't everything. Didn't learn a darn thing thats why i always played on the computer when we go to the salon part. We had a student who worked in a salon already that showed us how to foil highlights. But until this day it still takes me forever to foil & i also had a barber in my class that taught me how to fade.
Please all prospective students!! Beauty School was never ever meant to educate you on anything BUT how to pass the state board exAm!! Do not have expectations of a school to give you that which it was NOT MEANT TO! That is why I tell everyone to go to the cheapest school, pass the exam and THEN GET YOURSELF TRULY EDUCATED!! Take as many advanced classes as you are able, thats where you actually learn your trade! And then as Jamie says, try to assist before you take any clients on your own. Your education is YOUR RESPONSIBILITY not beauty schools! Even Paul Mitchell schools teach you to pass board exam! And what they charge is ridiculous. Take a portion of the money they charge, go to least expensive school, then use money for color, cutting etc. classes. You will b far less in debt.
Lea Unfortunately the school's sell a different scenario and most use these students to earn more money with the walk ins without actually helping the students understand what they are doing. It's really sad and there are not as many commission salons around to hire enough of them to apprentice. Most both renters cannot hire a full time assistant. I've often thought of starting advancement training classes because locally they offer nothing to these new stylist!
I love the fact that you have confirmed that it is ok to say no! You have reinforced my confidence and quite possibly saved me a lot of sleepless nights and stress. The amount of times I have agreed to carry out a service that I am not comfortable with for the sake of a few extra pounds. But no more! My #1 mistake leaving beauty school was starting at a very high end salon fresh from beauty school. I was clueless and so imitated while my coworkers treated me SO condescending. I ended up quitting and not working in the industry for YEARS after that bc I was so scared. Eventually I came back, but now I’m focused on Skincare waxing and makeup. I do miss hair though and wish I would have started in a less intimidating salon so it was realistic for me. It’s so hard to get back into hair after so many years away 😢 Do you have advice on to how to get back into the industry after not doing hair for years? Thanks!! 💗💗
Please and get your confidence restored! And close your eyes and go to work and not worry about what the other people around you are doing! No one is perfect everyone’s different! I think hair is the very best part of the industry! Don’t deprive yourself of this part best way to make money is hair.No matter what people do or say to you kill them with kindness and they will shut up!
Girl, I got my license in 2007, started at fantastic sams, then went to a high end salon as a nail tech with the promise of assisting...three years later I was still a nail teach and passionless about hair because the people i worked with broke me...and maybe I broke myself. I gave up...then to make money I went to Great Clips...tips are great but its kinda soul killing, chop shop hair cutting...Ive gotten great at cuts, mens especially, but im still not making the money to make a decent living. Im now 32 have like $20 to my name, but have some interesting interviews coming up. I have the talent , I just had to get that passion again. Now I just have faith that the starz with align so that the right salon and I find ourselves... Dont give up...ive failed a lot...and ive trued lots of different industries...I always come back to hair....now I won't be leaving again...lol ya'll are stuck with me...

Set up a chair in your home while you still do skin care. Get family and friends in your chair. Work on some doll heads, take some classes and start looking for a great salon family to work at. Don't let no one take your dream from you. Best wishes. 💖 🌻
The people lays on the instructor who is supposed to be teaching the students how to do it all. If you never did black hair Mexican hair Chinese hair Indian hair you can pick and choose out in the real world, but do you want to only make money that you see as easy cash? You can open your experience to another world and knowledge of all types of hair. You as a professional know if you choose to do clients like your mom that limits your mind to small. While I learned on all types of hair I can do all types of hair. As for charging a set price that's on you. But the I cant do thoughts. Change those thoughts into I can do and learn. You video is good but your being narrow minded. A Cosmology professor is just that. It not a license to only do straight hair or not touch curly hair. I'm sorry you were not taught to have an open mind. I want my students to learn it all. If they choose out in the field not to use what I teach that is on them. Learning after you leave school is sad. Students should already know if they would stop saying this. Well I did 3 cuts today and she has not done anything. Leave that person alone. Do that cut color style while in school. The person who complains about the fact they did too many in one day wont be as productive in the real world. I see this all the time. Lord if they just want to sit and make time....go home until your serious about your path.
I graduate from beauty school 3 years back and learned almost nothing and start working at a salon where they were doing men’s haircut and ugly hair colour highlights in a very old fashion way so I start watching TH-cam videos how to do balayage, highlights and style women’s hair because I don’t like doing men’s hair and I found your Chanel since then I learned a lot from your videos. I like your 4th tip the most. I've been in the industry for 4 years now and feel like a flop sometimes because I've mostly just worked at my local Great Clips and feel like while I have improved and learned a lot, I'm generally embarrassed to say I work there and am not proud of it. But I like being reminded that it's never too late to start building my brand, start a social media for hair and to use my experience to keep learning. The first few years really have been all about learning still, beauty school was barely even a taste.... Thanks for the video and encouragement.
You have a job! Your doing a service to help the customer feel better?? If not go away. Find a place your confident in working. Great clips is easy to get walk in customers so never be ashamed where you work. Its again what I stress. People pay a lot to go through school but many think it's a joke. It's not when your paying back student loans for the next years. Ouch. If they had a great teacher they would not care where they cut hair. It starts at the school and your dream of being the best. Remember what you put on that clients head will like you or bite you. I guess I'll make a great teacher because I have old school knowledge and still feel young at heart. Good luck but never feel you are ashamed of a place your crafting a skill. Think of it as your getting better and faster with more accurate cuts. My word of the day. When you can see the final product on the clients head before you ever start then you'll have the real grasp of what a hair stylist is about. Good luck. I’m in the same boat been working at Great Clips for 5 years straight out of a beauty school that only taught for state board and now I want to venture out and do more. But I’m so nervous about it. I almost don’t know where to beginning.
I totally feel this. I've been in the industry for 6 years but I took 2 years off working on my mental health after being shut down by a coworker at fantastic sams. Later went to supercuts to get training in haircutting because haircutting was something I struggled at in beauty school. Sometimes I am ashamed saying I work at supercuts because I know people look down on chain salons as if they're lesser than a regular salon and I honestly think it has to do with them having high turnover rates. Though I do get burnt out working there at times, my team is supportive and I can definitely say I feel pretty confident doing men's cuts.
Thank you so much for the video, I left hairdressing years ago and then refreshed to come back into the industry.I think the best thing to learn is to ignore others that make you feel inadequate and to close your eyes to their comments and kill them with kindness, The wrong salon is also not a great place to feel good about hairdressing when other stylists are mean and you can hear their remarks. As you say we all do things differently, so CHOOSE THE RIGHT SALON, best tip ever, I left the salon because people were unkind and you could hear them talk about you, this in turn hindered my confidence, glad I left when I did, because I doubted my decision to go it alone at first but now….after going self employed I feel so much more confident and took extra tuition in the form of day courses and I am loving hair again. I taught so many other students at my school and taught myself. I have been doing hair for 16 yrs off and on but just recently went to school for it. They didn’t teach me crap! I’m so happy to finally get to live my dream and I love education! Im always trying to learn new info.

This was such an awesome video- Great advice! I've worked in salons for about 6 years and have been licensed for 2 years and it's been such a challenge trying to build up a clientele... I've considered quitting sooo many times already thinking I'm not good enough, but I feel like this industry has some really positive people to look up to, like you! I'm super introverted and shy and have anxiety but I love having the creative freedom and love to learn new things! My biggest lesson I wish I learned earlier was definitely finding the right salon for you- you don't have to stay somewhere you're not happy. Setting goals and continued education is so important to me, so I found a salon where our values are the same! This industry is definitely a lot harder than I ever thought it was and you have to work hard if you want to be successful!
Hey Jamie, I want to tell you that I love your style, your upbeat personality and you love of life. I enrolled in beauty school 6 months ago to start on April 6th 2020. Then Covid hits.....huge bummer. The school is letting us do all of our intro online, which is great because we can get it done now and not have to wait another few months to start. We are doing 8 hours of beauty school over zoom!!! It can be a little daunting at times, but watching your tutorial videos have given me such a optimistic outlook on what is in store for me! BS is the basic ABC. Theory and yes you learnt something ok- what you do with that basic knowledge is up to you the student ! Be humble and continuing learning every day and practice + practice until you drop. Stay positive and enthusiastic about your journey. I'm went to beauty school after high school, I was told from the start that me being plus size, gay, feminine, and a man I was told I had to be a straight manly macho man. With my struggles with ADD and being a man not knowing how to blow dry or section long hair. Got my license and tried to get a job. But I had a planned back surgery that I should have had had that first then go to beauty school. I went back to beauty school for 3 months. I improved my skills and got better. Months after not being able to find a job for months a " friend " from beauty school opened a salon and I worked for 8 weeks going from stylist, to assistant to opening and being the salon manager while my boss was recovering from gender reassignment surgery for very little pay. After the abuse of that I went to mental health rehab. And now still to this day I'm scared to walk in a salon and apply for a job. I'm currently working from home barely making money from cutting my dad's hair and coloring my mom and grandmas hair. I'm looking for an actually apertenceship, but in New York State there are very few. I love your videos and thank yo for making videos like this. Much love

Lol.....yes Aveda was the snot rag of my time....I've been in the game 20+ years! I went to work for an Aveda concept salon and they were sooooooooo tacky and rude. I grew thick skin very quickly! I like what Jamie said about setting yourself up for success. But just know that starting, progression, and success can change at a moments notice. You are in control of your life, don't let low pay, bad management, or salon drama make you quit. Keep up the great work Jamie, you're a huge inspiration.
#jamiedana my experience was terrible and i really wanted to do Autotech 🚘 . But i stuck w/it then when i got out. I thought it wasn't for me. But i was so slow 🐌 .. A real procrastinator that I wouldn't budge . so I kept at it, kept at it & kept at it ... Then i finally went back a finished Autotech in 2013.. Anywho I also learned to foil from another student 2foil.. She was still in high achool and worked @ a private salon and worked at another part time job to pay the booth rent.. Which frightened me... I think that's another reason why I never could decide if i really wanted to stay w/ doing 💇 hair

Omg thank you soo much for the video. I chose beauty school as a second career. Being the oldest in the school. (54) , I graduated , passed the test & didn’t even know how to do a good haircut. I was hired by the school & taught for a yr. I loved the teaching but feared teaching on the floor. I had no clue, I had teaching experience prior & that part was great but never went into a salon. I had to move & have been watching videos for 2 yrs, practice on doll heads & still not 100% confident. I love your enthusiasm. Keep up the great videos. I am a newbie in my beauty class I feel like a small fish swimming with big fishes now that you mentioned you didn’t even know how to do highlights I myself haven’t gotten there my teacher is good she tells me make sure that you combine both practice & knowledge together & that will help me thrive in the real world my teacher has me practicing with my doll perm rolls I need more practice when it comes to sectioning & making sure that as I go up the head of the doll the perm rolls are nicely secure in all three sides of the head I also like to look at other classmates that are really great with perm rolls because it inspires me if I can group with others on my free time that will also be great it will be a win-win Thanks for sharing your wisdom 💗⭐️🍀🎀✨

#5 struck me the most! I had only been doing hair for about 5 years at a salon that I loved and coworkers I loved but with a boss that made me do every client and also do anything to appease them. It did make me comfortable with a variety of services but I got stuck with a lot of clients that did not want to pay for my time or skill and ultimately that led to me not doing hair anymore. I just moved from Colorado to my home of California and decided not to do hair anymore because I would have to start all over. But I’m thinking about getting back into it!
Thank you so much for this video. My last day of cosmetology school is the 29th of this month and I've been so nervous about getting out into the field after I take my state boards. Although I love the school I go to and my instructors are incredible, I still feel like I haven't learned as much as I was hoping to learn. So your first point about beauty school not being everything really put me at ease.
I just graduated from school on the 3rd of this month. I’ve been watching your videos for several years and I’ve learned techniques that you teach and used them on clients at school (backwards foiling, using a blending agent) in my area in Michigan there aren’t many salons that hire assistants so I will be starting as a new stylist “junior stylist” at one of the local chain salons most likely. There is a privately owned salon that I would also love to work at but they use Aveda. I’m keeping your advice in mind as I’m currently weighing my options! Thank you so much 😊
I graduated 5 years ago and stumbled around in chain salons in and out not knowing what to do. I started thinking I didn’t like it anymore but really I was discouraged. Then I stayed home with my daughter and dropped off. Got a job in one of the busier salons in town on desk but She recently talked me into getting back behind the chair. I’m renting and feel like I’m starting over cuz I never got going to begin with. I tend to doubt myself a lot and I’m trying to do this right but I’m starting totally minimalist and having to build up all of my things. It can be discouraging and intimidating but your videos are definitely helpful!
Oh and I was just told I should take everything I can when I didn’t want a perm. And my dad is horrible about that too. Just make money cuz I live in a tiny area and it’s a poorer area but I’m like no I hate perms and suck at them lol

Omg yes this video!!! I literally shopped around for a year for a salon after beauty school. Definitely ask how long you will be an apprentice, I heard anywhere from 2yrs to until there is an opening. You want to know how focused they are into training you vs being salon help forever. Also ask about contracts. Sometimes you have to work there at a salon for a certain amount of time before you quit or you will have to pay them back for education. Others will say if you leave you cant work within a certain mile radius of said salon. That could screw you over! Of course compensation! Actually thinking about making finding a salon job my first TH-cam video 🤔😂 keep up the great videos!!

I definitely made the mistake of taking a job in a Spa immediately out of beauty school just because they were a higher end place and would pay well. I never got to do any hair, just nails! Next week I’m leaving the spa and going to a salon that focuses on HAIR and the type of things I want to do. Follow your heart, do what you love, not just for the money!!

I’m a stylist and have been doing hair for 17 years now. I’m the only stylist in the small town salon that I work in and therefore have missed out on all the newer techniques. Balayage, ombré, shadow root/smudge. This year I’ve decided that I’ll be learning these techniques if it’s the last thing I do. So glad to find your videos! I loved your comparison of beauty school being one year but the couple years after school counting as education as well! That’s a great way to look st it. I for sure learned WAY more once I got into a salon. And every hard thing I’ve experienced work wise has shaped me fo sho!
My #1 mistakes was not knowing that high end salons are not what they seem to be, everybody treated me like a maid and I was treated badly for bad pay. I just wished I would have started small and perfected my techniques like cutting, color, and blowouts !
I’m about to start an apprenticeship at a kind of high end salon and maybe it’s because I haven’t started yet and I’m still the front desk person, but they literally get mad if I forget to sweep their station or if I’m too busy to do it. Like, I literally am a maid there and it’s sooo tiring. Of course I haven’t even officially started doing any education or training yet but I’m 4 months into it and uggghhhhh I’m just freaking tired of it! Lol
I am so glad I have found this video! I graduated back in 2016 from Cosmetology school and my experience was horrible! I did not learn anything, so I relate COMPLETELY! I have been to three salons 1.) Was a salon who did not appreciate an assistant learning. 2.) A salon who only did blowouts (got very boring and pay was horrible) 3.) Salon shut down and did not offer an education. I did quit because I felt I was not good enough. I still have my full license and renewing it every year. Now that I am older I want to get back into hair and teach myself through youtube and free education. I wish I knew this in hair school then I would have set myself up for success!
I graduated in April and did electrolysis for a little while because I know nothing about hair, thankfully I found a salon that was willing to help me learn while also doing things I know there. a longggg way to go and def wish I would've assisted in school

These were awesome tips Jamie. I too an a seasoned salon professional that didn't have social media in the beginning of my career but trust and believe I was still successful. Social Media just puts the icing on the cake for your business and brand. But what some new stylists fail to realize is that its more to the industry and building a business and brand than just sitting on social media all day posting pics etc. I so love reading al of the beautiful comments down below. . And ladies and gents cosmetology school is designed for you to complete your hours to get your license and move forward from there and the best situation out of school is an assistant/apprentice position in a salon that fits your personality and work ethic. This is an amazing career just be patient its a marathon not a sprint. Keep learning, keep practicing, and keep your confidence uplifted.
Not even going to lie this made me feel better. I'm graduating in less than 2 months and my school sucks. They don't teach us anything except to pass state bored which is fine., But I've been kinda freaking out that I don't know anything. It's just nice to know I'm not alone in that and I'll get through it.

I have done hair for 51 years!! A Dinasour in the business> The hair industry today is so different No more every week clients. Your bread and butter . After the older generation is gone! Supported the small shops. Assisted living for us or nursing homes. We have a lot of knowledge but no one wants age in a hairstylist. Must be young and hipped. Same thing with beauty school for me Jamie ..I did get to asset in Beverly Hills with some big Salons ..But I moved back home and I’ve been a barber for 25 yrs .. But I want to go back to Santa Monica and the Salons ..I really want my daughter in a good school like Santa Monica high .. It’s been so hard for me here ..I don’t fit in I never will and I’m good with that ..I’m home sick but who wouldn’t be .. But we had a school shooting here , and it made me realize that it can happen anywhere . Jamie I live next to Oxford high school .. I graduated in November and I did learn a ton in school but the real world is so much different. Went straight into booth rental and struggle to build clientele. The ones I service almost always come back but these slow weeks are killing me. I’ve been told I need to work until up to 1 am to hustle and take clients when they are available. Am I nuts or is that a bit much? I’m no slacker and I’m very much a people pleaser but I feel like I’m having a hard time finding a balance between giving this industry my all and this industry taking it all out of me.

YES, YES, YES! my Beauty schooling sucked, i didn't learn anything but how to pass the state boards as well, and boy oh boy no stylist wanted to mentor/help me! so i left for a while. im back and am trying to get help in anyway possible. i have a good group of gals to lean on now.

I didnt learn anything in school either except how to pas state board. I had such high hopes and they got shut down hard lol but i quickly realized that school is not everything at all and its all about what you do after school and continue you education and get into a salon to start learning rite away. And finding the rite mentor for sure
In Denmark we have two hairstylist Educations - one that is supported by the state, you need an apprenticeship where you work in a salon while you learn at school - it’s 4 years in all... 1 year ( in all) if schooling and 3 years of working in the salon... and you are getting payed throughout and have the opportunity of competing and learning from your peers... Then we have the 1 year school - that’s one year where you pay around 3800 dollars to go there - you have to learn the same thing as the 4 year and the school have (paying) clients for you to train on... I’ve been trained under the 4 year program and LOVE what you are saying here... Unfortunately there are no restriction here about who work with one - anyone can open a salon and work as a hairstylist.... We have support from the hairstylist and cosmetologist union because when we are trained under the 4 year program - because they vouch for our education... And we get licensed! But when anyone can open a salon and usually charge less the competition is hard... Unfortunately I was trained 20 years ago and have a hard time in this ‘social media’ time - I ‘grew up’ with only taking pictures for personal use of models, so it feels really weird to me to ask paying clients if I can feature them on my Instagram.... but I need to get over that ;(
Oh btw - the reason our education is 4 years is because we learn EVERYTHING!! We learn basic makeup, manicure and depilation... And for hair we learn hair biology, marketing, economy, color theory and anything we need to know to open a salon right out of school:.. And the primary thing - we learn cutting ( male and female) color, perm, updo, ironwork and styling with and without curlers and updos...

Back in my day in the 90's, you had to pay good money for classes outside of school and still wouldn't be even be close to what you can learn from here on social medias such as TH-cam! I had to miss a few days due to a funeral and missed the most important day they had lol 😂 but anyways, I'm fine and don't get freaked out over everyone telling you about state Board. It is fun and easy and u train for it everyday while in school so once u get there it's everything u know by heart! A lot of the people that were in school with me dropped out bc it was" hard " but it's not. And go sign up for the extra hours to get your diploma the highest u can be (they even have a teacher diploma) it's well worth it going all at once and getting it done so u can be out and do whatever you chose! I felt like I didn’t learn as much as I should in school either! I have learned so much since I have been out of school. I even did a duel credit program in high school at a cosmetology school for my junior and senior year of high school in cosmetology school. half the school day I was in cosmetology school for two years and then decided I wanted more education and started fresh at a college for cosmetology for ANOTHER FULL YEAR. 3 years of cosmetology school and I have learned so much more after.
It is a total shame how poor some of the cosmetology programs are out there...you give great advice on how to look at the following couple of years as continuing education. Learning actually never ends!!!
Hi , iv been hairdressing 30yrs , but im still not confident in all areas of colour. Its my weakest area ! I think bc , i never had a great mentor to teach me & i served my 4 yrs aprentiship before foils was around ,,,, SO i had to teach myself how to do it....leading to so many bad experiences. I love your tutorials & i can learn so easily from you...... i only WISH you could have been the hairdressing tutor way back when i was a mere apprentice. Im a kiwi , & in the salon i work in , we dont get much balayage or hand painting.... but lots of foil work , lots of global colour work , but im getting myself off to any colour course i can to learn as much as possible , to keep current & up to date..... however , i still feel like i know nothing , compared to you , the 30s & under generation concerning cutting & colouring. I never stop learning.

I assisted at a high end salon while still in school. Learned how to shampoo & give the best head massages. Went to a small 4 stylist salon and got to be a Junior stylist and assistant. So I got paid to help the other stylist while learning so much. Finally I ended up as a commission based stylist in a locally owned salon. This is by far the best way to do it if you are able. I knew NOTHING coming out of school. I never even opened my clippers. Thank you for this awesome video & allowing us to help each other 💛

I’ve been a professional hairstylist for 5years now and when I first graduated I worked at a salon that didn’t have many stylist so I would work 7-8 hrs by myself. I didn’t apprentice or assist at all I just went straight into it and I’m happy I did because I learned so much. The salon I worked at wasn’t a high end salon so it was a good place to mess up if I did and learn from it. I hate when ppl complain about not being a good hairstylist because they didn’t assist or anything like that when, yes, it does help to assist but it’s also up to you to keep learning and keep wanting to learn. I would watch videos and practice non-stop on mannequins because I knew I needed to get my shit together working alone for 7-8 hrs so I had no one to help me. I’m a visual & hands on learner so I guess that’s why I learned quick and I also work really well under pressure.

I feel like I had such a good beauty school experience, and can hardly believe that some schools don’t equip you to embrace the industry when you leave. I went to a small school with less than 10 students and 3 instructors. I learned so much, and on top of that I interned with my friend (who convinced me to go to beauty school) almost my whole way through school. I’m still terrified about the different aspects of the business side and building my own clientele; but overall I’m so excited to get started and so blessed to have had the experience I did.
Def a big reason you had a great experience is bc of the small size! They’ve got 35 ppl in one class at my school! With one instructor!

I just graduated and feel like I know NOTHING but I don’t have the ability to assist and learn bc I need to pay my bills and most assistant get paid very little or nothing at all. Not sure what the point of paying for school is if I can’t do the basics after graduation

The more I research school and watch every god damn YT story of what school is like, I’m starting to whole heartedly believe beauty school is a scam. It seems like a school loan buisness who set up shop in poorer type town so they can prey on the underprivileged who have huge hopes of a better future. Heck even the financial director is built in. Maybe it just fine to go to a votech and save the $, just get the license, and try and learn as much as you can after or in a good salon. What’s also interesting to me is not everyone is made for this. I don’t get what ppl r doing here. Lol. You kinda have to be a natural born artists. I noticed hispanic people are amazing artists whether hair makeup or tattooing. It’s gotta be in the blood. Anyways have a good day! Hope I don’t get scammed. Lol.
I have watched your hair videos in the past Jamie and I love how all of the toners blend in so pretty. I am 49 years old and I am considering starting cosmetology school in the next couple of months. I am nervous to start in this crazy time with the pandemic going on. I hope I am making the right choice because employment and everything is so up in the air. The fact that I am older does scare me a little too because I am not savvy with technology. Thanks for the information about branding and putting your business out there. I’ve been doing hair for 36 years and I’m still learning new things!! When you stop learning and don’t get excited about new products and techniques-that’s when you get burned out!! When I went to school we did shampoo sets and perms!! I knew zip about color!! I learned to foil from other younger stylists and beauty shows and I soaked up any education I could on color!! I am a master stylist and coloring is my strongest skill!! I love u tube and any beauty blogs!! I learned how to do a man’s fade hc from u tube!! Now my fades rock!! I still love what I do!( my knees don’t love it so much tho!). Wear good shoes!! Stay on your mats!!

I'm seeing a lot of comments of people that feel like they didn't learn anything from their beauty school. Cosmetology school is basically giving us the basics for us to create our own art, to build up our skills over the years. I'm sure most of you left your school's at least knowing 50% more of what you guys knew before, and of course we'll learn more things we didn't know before. We never stop learning as artists. 💕
Let's face it - beauty school is based around passing the state board. Once you are out in the real world, it's so much more. I've had my license for a year this month - I am still not confident and am getting frustrated!

Heidi Ledford same!! My school was basically 90% rollersets and perms and everything else was left for us to figure out on our own. It was embarrassing (although myself and everyone in my class begged for highlighting/clipper cutting to be taught)
I started off in a high end salon, and it ended up closing down. Then I went to another high end salon and it closed down too. I thought high end would mean more money and more clients. I was wrong. They tend to be more appointment based and slower with walk-ins. So then I went to Hair Cuttery and I’m LOVING IT so far! I wish I started there fresh out of school, you learn SO much and it gets your prepared for the long run. You build a clientele fast and have so many opportunities to grow and have raises! Plus the commission is better when you start there!

My beauty school was TRASH! We barely learned anything about cuts and coloring. We learned hella basic application techniques for coloring and we didn’t learn highlights AT ALL and we only learned blunt cuts.

You’re a maverick. I’m not in beauty school, I’m just learning how to do my own hair because many stylists screw it up. Your video is what they should all be doing. I wish some stylists had said no to me before messing up my hair. I wish they’d continue to learn and stop being complacent & stuck in their ways because it really shows in their work. I wish my stylist of years didn’t choose & conform to working at a burn & turn salon (Salon prices, Great-cuts quality haircuts). Her quality was once so good & strategic & now I’m out Learning to do it myself or find another. Another thing that might fit into the building your brand category would be to generate quality online reviews. Much of today’s consumer choices are determined by reading online reviews it ahead of time so it’s critical that their work is reflected in the reviews. You’re teaching us clients here too. Omg I am you, you are me! I graduated beauty sch in 2k08 i already knew it wasn't everything. Didn't learn a darn thing thats why i always played on the computer when we go to the salon part. We had a student who worked in a salon already that showed us how to foil highlights. But until this day it still takes me forever to foil & i also had a barber in my class that taught me how to fade.

Beauty School was never ever meant to educate you on anything BUT how to pass the state board exAm!! Do not have expectations of a school to give you that which it was NOT MEANT TO!
That is why I tell everyone to go to the cheapest school, pass the exam and THEN GET YOURSELF TRULY EDUCATED!! Take as many advanced classes as you are able, thats where you actually learn your trade! And then as Jamie says, try to assist before you take any clients on your own.
Your education is YOUR RESPONSIBILITY not beauty schools!
Even Paul Mitchell schools teach you to pass board exam! And what they charge is ridiculous. Take a portion of the money they charge, go to least expensive school, then use money for color, cutting etc. classes. You will b far less in debt.

Lea Unfortunately the school's sell a different scenario and most use these students to earn more money with the walk ins without actually helping the students understand what they are doing. It's really sad and there are not as many commission salons around to hire enough of them to apprentice. Most both renters cannot hire a full time assistant. I've often thought of starting advancement training classes because locally they offer nothing to these new stylist!

My #1 mistake leaving beauty school was starting at a very high end salon fresh from beauty school. I was clueless and so imitated while my coworkers treated me SO condescending.
I ended up quitting and not working in the industry for YEARS after that bc I was so scared. Eventually I came back, but now I’m focused on Skincare waxing and makeup.
I do miss hair though and wish I would have started in a less intimidating salon so it was realistic for me. It’s so hard to get back into hair after so many years away 😢

Please and get your confidence restored! And close your eyes and go to work and not worry about what the other people around you are doing! No one is perfect everyone’s different! I think hair is the very best part of the industry! Don’t deprive yourself of this part best way to make money is hair.No matter what people do or say to you kill them with kindness and they will shut up!
Girl, I got my license in 2007, started at fantastic sams, then went to a high end salon as a nail tech with the promise of assisting...three years later I was still a nail teach and passionless about hair because the people i worked with broke me...and maybe I broke myself. I gave up...then to make money I went to Great Clips...tips are great but its kinda soul killing, chop shop hair cutting...Ive gotten great at cuts, mens especially, but im still not making the money to make a decent living. Im now 32 have like $20 to my name, but have some interesting interviews coming up. I have the talent , I just had to get that passion again. Now I just have faith that the starz with align so that the right salon and I find ourselves... Dont give up...ive failed a lot...and ive trued lots of different industries...I always come back to hair....now I won't be leaving again...lol ya'll are stuck with me...

Set up a chair in your home while you still do skin care. Get family and friends in your chair. Work on some doll heads, take some classes and start looking for a great salon family to work at. Don't let no one take your dream from you.

The people lays on the instructor who is supposed to be teaching the students how to do it all. If you never did black hair Mexican hair Chinese hair Indian hair you can pick and choose out in the real world, but do you want to only make money that you see as easy cash? You can open your experience to another world and knowledge of all types of hair.
You as a professional know if you choose to do clients like your mom that limits your mind to small. While I learned on all types of hair I can do all types of hair. As for charging a set price that's on you. But the I cant do thoughts. Change those thoughts into I can do and learn. You video is good but your being narrow minded.
A Cosmology professor is just that. It not a license to only do straight hair or not touch curly hair. I'm sorry you were not taught to have an open mind.
I want my students to learn it all. If they choose out in the field not to use what I teach that is on them.
Learning after you leave school is sad. Students should already know if they would stop saying this. Well I did 3 cuts today and she has not done anything. Leave that person alone. Do that cut color style while in school. The person who complains about the fact they did too many in one day wont be as productive in the real world.

I graduate from beauty school 3 years back and learned almost nothing and start working at a salon where they were doing men’s haircut and ugly hair colour highlights in a very old fashion way so I start watching TH-cam videos how to do balayage, highlights and style women’s hair because I don’t like doing men’s hair and I found your Chanel since then I learned a lot from your videos. I like your 4th tip the most. I've been in the industry for 4 years now and feel like a flop sometimes because I've mostly just worked at my local Great Clips and feel like while I have improved and learned a lot, I'm generally embarrassed to say I work there and am not proud of it. But I like being reminded that it's never too late to start building my brand, start a social media for hair and to use my experience to keep learning. You have a job! Your doing a service to help the customer feel better?? If not go away. Find a place your confident in working. Great clips is easy to get walk in customers so never be ashamed where you work. Its again what I stress. People pay a lot to go through school but many think it's a joke. It's not when your paying back student loans for the next years. Ouch. If they had a great teacher they would not care where they cut hair.
It starts at the school and your dream of being the best. Remember what you put on that clients head will like you or bite you.

I’m in the same boat been working at Great Clips for 5 years straight out of a beauty school that only taught for state board and now I want to venture out and do more. But I’m so nervous about it. I almost don’t know where to beginning.
I totally feel this. I've been in the industry for 6 years but I took 2 years off working on my mental health after being shut down by a coworker at fantastic sams. Later went to supercuts to get training in haircutting because haircutting was something I struggled at in beauty school. Sometimes I am ashamed saying I work at supercuts because I know people look down on chain salons as if they're lesser than a regular salon and I honestly think it has to do with them having high turnover rates. Though I do get burnt out working there at times, my team is supportive and I can definitely say I feel pretty confident doing men's cuts.

Thank you so much for the video, I left hairdressing years ago and then refreshed to come back into the industry.I think the best thing to learn is to ignore others that make you feel inadequate and to close your eyes to their comments and kill them with kindness, The wrong salon is also not a great place to feel good about hairdressing when other stylists are mean and you can hear their remarks. As you say we all do things differently, so CHOOSE THE RIGHT SALON, best tip ever, I left the salon because people were unkind and you could hear them talk about you, this in turn hindered my confidence, glad I left when I did, because I doubted my decision to go it alone at first but now….after going self employed I feel so much more confident and took extra tuition in the form of day courses and I am loving hair again. I taught so many other students at my school and taught myself. I have been doing hair for 16 yrs off and on but just recently went to school for it. They didn’t teach me crap! I’m so happy to finally get to live my dream and I love education! Im always trying to learn new info.

I'm super introverted and shy and have anxiety but I love having the creative freedom and love to learn new things!
My biggest lesson I wish I learned earlier was definitely finding the right salon for you- you don't have to stay somewhere you're not happy. Setting goals and continued education is so important to me, so I found a salon where our values are the same!
This industry is definitely a lot harder than I ever thought it was and you have to work hard if you want to be successful!

I want to tell you that I love your style, your upbeat personality and you love of life. I enrolled in beauty school 6 months ago to start on April 6th 2020. Then Covid hits.....huge bummer. The school is letting us do all of our intro online, which is great because we can get it done now and not have to wait another few months to start. We are doing 8 hours of beauty school over zoom!!! It can be a little daunting at times, but watching your tutorial videos have given me such a optimistic outlook on what is in store for me! Thanks for putting up these videos!!
BS is the basic ABC. Theory and yes you learnt something ok- what you do with that basic knowledge is up to you the student ! Be humble and continuing learning every day and practice + practice until you drop. Stay positive and enthusiastic about your journey. Hung out with other professionals who are as passionate as you R. I'm went to beauty school after high school, I was told from the start that me being plus size, gay, feminine, and a man I was told I had to be a straight manly macho man. With my struggles with ADD and being a man not knowing how to blow dry or section long hair. Got my license and tried to get a job. But I had a planned back surgery that I should have had had that first then go to beauty school. I went back to beauty school for 3 months. I improved my skills and got better. Months after not being able to find a job for months a " friend " from beauty school opened a salon and I worked for 8 weeks going from stylist, to assistant to opening and being the salon manager while my boss was recovering from gender reassignment surgery for very little pay. After the abuse of that I went to mental health rehab. And now still to this day I'm scared to walk in a salon and apply for a job. I'm currently working from home barely making money from cutting my dad's hair and coloring my mom and grandmas hair. I'm looking for an actually apertenceship, but in New York State there are very few. I love your videos and thank yo for making videos like this. Much love

Lol.....yes Aveda was the snot rag of my time....I've been in the game 20+ years! I went to work for an Aveda concept salon and they were sooooooooo tacky and rude. I grew thick skin very quickly! Lol

#jamiedana my experience was terrible and i really wanted to do Autotech 🚘 . But i stuck w/it then when i got out. I thought it wasn't for me. But i was so slow 🐌 .. A real procrastinator that I wouldn't budge . so I kept at it, kept at it & kept at it ... Then i finally went back a finished Autotech in 2013.. Anywho I also learned to foil from another student 2foil.. She was still in high achool and worked @ a private salon and worked at another part time job to pay the booth rent.. Which frightened me... I think that's another reason why I never could decide if i really wanted to stay w/ doing 💇 hair

Omg thank you soo much for the video. I chose beauty school as a second career. Being the oldest in the school. (54) , I graduated , passed the test & didn’t even know how to do a good haircut. I was hired by the school & taught for a yr. I loved the teaching but feared teaching on the floor. I had no clue, I had teaching experience prior & that part was great but never went into a salon. I had to move & have been watching videos for 2 yrs, practice on doll heads & still not 100% confident. I love your enthusiasm. Keep up the great videos. One day I will get the courage to get a salon job!

I am a newbie in my beauty class I feel like a small fish swimming with big fishes now that you mentioned you didn’t even know how to do highlights I myself haven’t gotten there my teacher is good she tells me make sure that you combine both practice & knowledge together & that will help me thrive in the real world my teacher has me practicing with my doll perm rolls I need more practice when it comes to sectioning & making sure that as I go up the head of the doll the perm rolls are nicely secure in all three sides of the head I also like to look at other classmates that are really great with perm rolls because it inspires me if I can group with others on my free time that will also be great it will be a win-win Thanks for sharing your wisdom 💗⭐️🍀🎀✨

#5 struck me the most! I had only been doing hair for about 5 years at a salon that I loved and coworkers I loved but with a boss that made me do every client and also do anything to appease them. It did make me comfortable with a variety of services but I got stuck with a lot of clients that did not want to pay for my time or skill and ultimately that led to me not doing hair anymore. I just moved from Colorado to my home of California and decided not to do hair anymore because I would have to start all over. But I’m thinking about getting back into it!

I just graduated from school on the 3rd of this month. I’ve been watching your videos for several years and I’ve learned techniques that you teach and used them on clients at school (backwards foiling, using a blending agent) in my area in Michigan there aren’t many salons that hire assistants so I will be starting as a new stylist “junior stylist” at one of the local chain salons most likely. There is a privately owned salon that I would also love to work at but they use Aveda. I’m keeping your advice in mind as I’m currently weighing my options! Thank you so much 😊
I graduated 5 years ago and stumbled around in chain salons in and out not knowing what to do. I started thinking I didn’t like it anymore but really I was discouraged. Then I stayed home with my daughter and dropped off. Got a job in one of the busier salons in town on desk but She recently talked me into getting back behind the chair. I’m renting and feel like I’m starting over cuz I never got going to begin with. I tend to doubt myself a lot and I’m trying to do this right but I’m starting totally minimalist and having to build up all of my things. It can be discouraging and intimidating but your videos are definitely helpful!
Oh and I was just told I should take everything I can when I didn’t want a perm. And my dad is horrible about that too. Just make money cuz I live in a tiny area and it’s a poorer area but I’m like no I hate perms and suck at them lol

Omg yes this video!!! I literally shopped around for a year for a salon after beauty school. Definitely ask how long you will be an apprentice, I heard anywhere from 2yrs to until there is an opening. You want to know how focused they are into training you vs being salon help forever. Also ask about contracts. Sometimes you have to work there at a salon for a certain amount of time before you quit or you will have to pay them back for education. Others will say if you leave you cant work within a certain mile radius of said salon. That could screw you over! Of course compensation! Actually thinking about making finding a salon job my first TH-cam video 🤔😂 keep up the great videos!!

I definitely made the mistake of taking a job in a Spa immediately out of beauty school just because they were a higher end place and would pay well. I never got to do any hair, just nails! Next week I’m leaving the spa and going to a salon that focuses on HAIR and the type of things I want to do. Follow your heart, do what you love, not just for the money!!

I’m a stylist and have been doing hair for 17 years now. I’m the only stylist in the small town salon that I work in and therefore have missed out on all the newer techniques. Balayage, ombré, shadow root/smudge.

My #1 mistakes was not knowing that high end salons are not what they seem to be, everybody treated me like a maid and I was treated badly for bad pay. I just wished I would have started small and perfected my techniques like cutting, color, and blowouts !

I’m about to start an apprenticeship at a kind of high end salon and maybe it’s because I haven’t started yet and I’m still the front desk person, but they literally get mad if I forget to sweep their station or if I’m too busy to do it. Like, I literally am a maid there and it’s sooo tiring. Of course I haven’t even officially started doing any education or training yet but I’m 4 months into it and uggghhhhh I’m just freaking tired of it! Lol

I am so glad I have found this video! I graduated back in 2016 from Cosmetology school and my experience was horrible! I did not learn anything, so I relate COMPLETELY! I have been to three salons 1.) Was a salon who did not appreciate an assistant learning. 2.) A salon who only did blowouts (got very boring and pay was horrible) 3.) Salon shut down and did not offer an education. I did quit because I felt I was not good enough. I still have my full license and renewing it every year. Now that I am older I want to get back into hair and teach myself through youtube and free education. I wish I knew this in hair school then I would have set myself up for success!
I graduated in April and did electrolysis for a little while because I know nothing about hair, thankfully I found a salon that was willing to help me learn while also doing things I know there. a longggg way to go and def wish I would've assisted in school

These were awesome tips Jamie. I too an a seasoned salon professional that didn't have social media in the beginning of my career but trust and believe I was still successful. Social Media just puts the icing on the cake for your business and brand. But what some new stylists fail to realize is that its more to the industry and building a business and brand than just sitting on social media all day posting pics etc. I so love reading al of the beautiful comments down below. . And ladies and gents cosmetology school is designed for you to complete your hours to get your license and move forward from there and the best situation out of school is an assistant/apprentice position in a salon that fits your personality and work ethic. This is an amazing career just be patient its a marathon not a sprint. Keep learning, keep practicing, and keep your confidence uplifted.
Not even going to lie this made me feel better. I'm graduating in less than 2 months and my school sucks. They don't teach us anything except to pass state bored which is fine., But I've been kinda freaking out that I don't know anything. It's just nice to know I'm not alone in that and I'll get through it.

I have done hair for 51 years!! A Dinasour in the business> The hair industry today is so different No more every week clients. Your bread and butter . After the older generation is gone! Supported the small shops. Assisted living for us or nursing homes. We have a lot of knowledge but no one wants age in a hairstylist. Must be young and hipped. Same thing with beauty school for me Jamie ..I did get to asset in Beverly Hills with some big Salons ..But I moved back home and I’ve been a barber for 25 yrs .. But I want to go back to Santa Monica and the Salons ..I really want my daughter in a good school like Santa Monica high .. It’s been so hard for me here ..I don’t fit in I never will and I’m good with that ..I’m home sick but who wouldn’t be .. But we had a school shooting here , and it made me realize that it can happen anywhere . Jamie I live next to Oxford high school .. I worked at a barber shop and I did cut the principal hair before all this happened.. It Change me made me realize that life is short and you have to be and do what makes you happy ☀️Then I started watching you ..You make me happy and Excited about hair .. learning so munch buying my new Framer Trays brushes and boards.. I graduated in November and I did learn a ton in school but the real world is so much different. Went straight into booth rental and struggle to build clientele. The ones I service almost always come back but these slow weeks are killing me. I’ve been told I need to work until up to 1 am to hustle and take clients when they are available. Am I nuts or is that a bit much? I’m no slacker and I’m very much a people pleaser but I feel like I’m having a hard time finding a balance between giving this industry my all and this industry taking it all out of me.

I didnt learn anything in school either except how to pas state board. I had such high hopes and they got shut down hard lol but i quickly realized that school is not everything at all and its all about what you do after school and continue you education and get into a salon to start learning rite away. And finding the rite mentor for sure
Ugh!!! Wish I would've seen this BEFORE last night with the client I had!
In Denmark we have two hairstylist Educations - one that is supported by the state, you need an apprenticeship where you work in a salon while you learn at school - it’s 4 years in all... 1 year ( in all) if schooling and 3 years of working in the salon... and you are getting payed throughout and have the opportunity of competing and learning from your peers...
Then we have the 1 year school - that’s one year where you pay around 3800 dollars to go there - you have to learn the same thing as the 4 year and the school have (paying) clients for you to train on...
I’ve been trained under the 4 year program and LOVE what you are saying here...
Unfortunately there are no restriction here about who work with one - anyone can open a salon and work as a hairstylist....
We have support from the hairstylist and cosmetologist union because when we are trained under the 4 year program - because they vouch for our education...
And we get licensed!
But when anyone can open a salon and usually charge less the competition is hard...
Unfortunately I was trained 20 years ago and have a hard time in this ‘social media’ time - I ‘grew up’ with only taking pictures for personal use of models, so it feels really weird to me to ask paying clients if I can feature them on my Instagram.... but I need to get over that ;(
Oh btw - the reason our education is 4 years is because we learn EVERYTHING!!
We learn basic makeup, manicure and depilation...
And for hair we learn hair biology, marketing, economy, color theory and anything we need to know to open a salon right out of school:..
And the primary thing - we learn cutting ( male and female) color, perm, updo, ironwork and styling with and without curlers and updos...

You are not only a great colorist, but also have a winning personality. Thank you for sharing your work! People nowadays are so lucky to have these social media outlets to learn from. Back in my day in the 90's, you had to pay good money for classes outside of school and still wouldn't be even be close to what you can learn from here on social medias such as TH-cam! Anyone has come to me for advice about this industries, I've always told them, Don't go working at Super Cuts or any salons as such if you plan to go far

I left college to pursue cosmetology bc I knew it was my passion and I decided to take the risk. Your videos give me a sense of security and confidence in my decision and I am happier and happier each day that I am going to beauty school ❤️❤️
Amanda Staton it's so much fun you will enjoy every bit of it! Keep at it everyday and don't miss a day. I had to miss a few days due to a funeral and missed the most important day they had lol 😂 but anyways, I'm fine and don't get freaked out over everyone telling you about state Board. It is fun and easy and u train for it everyday while in school so once u get there it's everything u know by heart! A lot of the people that were in school with me dropped out bc it was" hard " but it's not. And go sign up for the extra hours to get your diploma the highest u can be (they even have a teacher diploma) it's well worth it going all at once and getting it done so u can be out and do whatever you chose! Many best wishes and have some fun! Welcome to the industry !!!

I felt like I didn’t learn as much as I should in school either! I have learned so much since I have been out of school. I even did a duel credit program in high school at a cosmetology school for my junior and senior year of high school in cosmetology school. half the school day I was in cosmetology school for two years and then decided I wanted more education and started fresh at a college for cosmetology for ANOTHER FULL YEAR. 3 years of cosmetology school and I have learned so much more after.
It is a total shame how poor some of the cosmetology programs are out there...you give great advice on how to look at the following couple of years as continuing education. Learning actually never ends!!!

Hi , iv been hairdressing 30yrs , but im still not confident in all areas of colour. Its my weakest area ! I think bc , i never had a great mentor to teach me & i served my 4 yrs aprentiship before foils was around ,,,, SO i had to teach myself how to do it....leading to so many bad experiences. I love your tutorials & i can learn so easily from you...... i only WISH you could have been the hairdressing tutor way back when i was a mere apprentice. Im a kiwi , & in the salon i work in , we dont get much balayage or hand painting.... but lots of foil work , lots of global colour work , but im getting myself off to any colour course i can to learn as much as possible , to keep current & up to date..... however , i still feel like i know nothing , compared to you , the 30s & under generation concerning cutting & colouring. I never stop learning.
