I believe that it might. Perhaps it signals in different directions in a pattern and eventually it will return to us. I have been fascinated with the WOW signal since I first heard about it years ago.
I think the way that frb were described (in the beginning of the video) as being (maybe) coming from outside of the milky-way is really interesting. I think it's a natural phenomenon, an energy discharge.
Certainly. Like pulsars and quasars, bursts of electromagnetic radiation emanating from newly discovered natural phenomena will continue to be detected. Maybe even a radio burst from an artificial source might one day be detected.

A black swan is a statistical fat tailed event. Left sided fat tails are events that have negative impact. Right sided ones are events that have a positive effect. The more impactful the fat tailed event, the less obvious it will appear.

I would think that stars around 90 percent of the sun's mass would be THE optimal candidates as none of them have yet left the main sequence and we can study 12 billion year old sun like stars.
I was under the impression that the habitable zone for light and energy of a dwarf is problematic to life.. because its so close that unfortunately it leaves the planet vulnerable plus it would be tidally locked.. and there would be an issue around the radiation being more in the longer wavelength.
I was also waiting for them to address these two problems. They discussed early on the issue of the type of lower energetic light from a red drawf. I was expecting them to address the other problem with red dwarfs. These are two plausible and strong objections to the possibility of life, especially complex life, occuring around these types of stars.
I think this may be the best show of yours, ever (though I've not yet seen them all). I love the breath of specificity (wow, never got to say that, before) covered by the discussion on the effects of astrophysics on biological nurseries expounded here. The scope, quality and quantity was beyond any I've ever heard. Thank you and your guest for an excellent informing and entertaining show!

Anyway, topic suggestions for next time he's on here: 1) star metallicity and how possible at how early, life was in the early universe (obviously first stars with basically no metallicity, couldn't host life, but like, when exactly did life become possible in our universe?). 2) the rarity (or scarcity) of extra-terrestrial life. Personally I think it's really black and white thinking on this one, and really no gray zones; either the universe is teeming with life, or it's not. And if the universe is teeming with simple life, it also means that intelligent life must be common, as a consequence. So that's my solution to the Fermi paradox: life is just extremely rare, so rare, that we actually might be alone (I don't think we are, but I wouldn't rule it out to be honest). 3) The rare Earth hypothesis. Yeah, you really need to discuss this one, just saying. And in-depth too. 4) Super-Earths and if we reached one, could we colonize it (as in, gravity conditions, atmospheric pressure and such). 5) Totani's space RNA study and how common it is for Earth-like planets to produce RNA (space RNA is uncommon for sure, but is RNA really scarce on Earth-like planets?). On that note, you should also touch on the RNA World hypothesis, which in my opinion is as of right now, the best abiogenesis explanation. 6) Last but not least, the rarity of abiogenesis, and how difficult it is with a successful abiogenesis (the Miller-Urey experiment and more recent abiogenesis attempts); abiogenesis isn't as easy as star formation you know ;)

Your videos are actually so good when I see them come up I don’t actually watch them straight away but wait for the perfect moment to sit down and relax to listen to them with full attention.
Kipping is brilliant, but there's a premise in the red sky paradox that I don't accept, namely that the chances of technological life appearing around a star isn't affected by previously existing technological life elsewhere. I tend to assume that there will only be one technological civilization in a galaxy, one that colonizes every star and prevents new civilizations from arising. In that case, you have to look at where that first civilization is most likely to arise. Red dwarfs tend to be rather turbulent initially, giving more sun-like stars a head start, all else being equal. Maybe G-type stars are where that first civilization have the best chance of forming. And maybe it turned out to be us.

covid was not a black swan event. pandemics occur regularily. the potential of spread was pretty obvious from the beginning. so not really a black swan.
One of the thing is that, we always think about biology and chemistry through the knowledge we know works here. Different chemical composition of the planet and other physical conditions might resolve in very different outcomes that work, and we had no idea even are possible - I mean, this is for me only reasonable thinking. Even if life can only exist based on carbon, and amino acids, how it produces or consumes energy might be different. From other hand the life forms we have here, might be the only working solution from biology perspective, but if we find even simple life somewhere, and it will be base on same principles here, it will rise 3 questions: This is only possible outcome? Somehow it travels from earth or to earth? It was engineered or planted by something? But over all I agree that, if life is not that hard to come to existence, there should be plenty of planets with life, from microbial to complex organisms, intelligence is a different matter. Earth has very complex life forms for nearly 500M years, before intelligence pop up.
Stellar Mass Habitability Index. Or SMHI (Like Anakin Skywalkers mom) There i coined this term for you guys. It's like the habitability zone but it doesn't just take distance from it's parent star into account but also the mass of the star and therefore the amount of useful work(Read exergy) output. In order to more conclusively say: This is a system in which life is more likely or not.
Kipping is awesome. I was hoping to hear a bit more on the potential habitability of a tidally locked red dwarf planet though. Apparently an atmosphere that distributes heat to the dark side is feasible but seems unlikely.
Just wanted to mention that Anna is profoundly more pleasant now that she's voiced with a more neutral and businesslike manner - as opposed to saying everything with an audible sneer of contempt as seemed the norm earlier in the history of the character. Who knows, maybe in the future she'll develop curiosity and interest in the subject matter, and actually turn into a participant!
A black swan event is the 2017 kilonova when it was proved that the speed of light and the speed of gravity are equal, almost equal. The gravitational waves were detected 2 seconds later after the GRB detection.

covid was not a black swan event. pandemics occur regularily. the potential of spread was pretty obvious from the beginning. so not really a black swan.

One of the thing is that, we always think about biology and chemistry through the knowledge we know works here. Different chemical composition of the planet and other physical conditions might resolve in very different outcomes that work, and we had no idea even are possible - I mean, this is for me only reasonable thinking. Even if life can only exist based on carbon, and amino acids, how it produces or consumes energy might be different. From other hand the life forms we have here, might be the only working solution from biology perspective, but if we find even simple life somewhere, and it will be base on same principles here, it will rise 3 questions: This is only possible outcome? Somehow it travels from earth or to earth? It was engineered or planted by something?
But over all I agree that, if life is not that hard to come to existence, there should be plenty of planets with life, from microbial to complex organisms, intelligence is a different matter. Earth has very complex life forms for nearly 500M years, before intelligence pop up.

Stellar Mass Habitability Index. Or SMHI (Like Anakin Skywalkers mom) There i coined this term for you guys. It's like the habitability zone but it doesn't just take distance from it's parent star into account but also the mass of the star and therefore the amount of useful work(Read exergy) output. In order to more conclusively say: This is a system in which life is more likely or not.

Kipping is awesome. I was hoping to hear a bit more on the potential habitability of a tidally locked red dwarf planet though. Apparently an atmosphere that distributes heat to the dark side is feasible but seems unlikely.

Just wanted to mention that Anna is profoundly more pleasant now that she's voiced with a more neutral and businesslike manner - as opposed to saying everything with an audible sneer of contempt as seemed the norm earlier in the history of the character. Who knows, maybe in the future she'll develop curiosity and interest in the subject matter, and actually turn into a participant!
