I think the modding community is also keeping it alive too, with mods there's never nothing new meaning if people get bored of vanilla Minecraft, then they can just add a mod or addon or even texture pack for a new experience. Heck mojang even hired a couple of mod creators like Kingbdogz.

And when 1.9 came out I instantly liked the mechanics because players cannot just spam click everything and have no strategy at all. The attack cooldowns offers more strategy as when to use different tools like switching between sword and axe.
