- Hey All, This is an overview of the state of Washington. They have seen a 13% growth rate over the last decade and there are a lot of reasons for this. The natural beauty, low taxes, and many jobs are still attracting more people than are leaving. But, Washington is not perfect. Many residents have issues with their state government, lack of sunshine, property crime, and homelessness issues. I am from the state and I decided to move from there because I couldn't handle so many cloudy days after living there for almost 20 years, but with that being said the state offers many positives to. This video is meant to inform people on What it is like to live here, not convince you one way or another. But, I would love to answer any questions you may have about living in the state of Washington. Take care and have a great day!

Hello I am moving to Washington next summer to live between Tacoma an Seattle I work in construction, mainly home remodeling and I can do new construction also. Is Washington a good place for my type of work? I am moving from San Francisco it’s just too expensive an too much ppl
If you don’t like the sun. Washington is a great place. The weather is pretty depressing and cold. Place for introverts for sure. Rains non stop for 8-10 months. Summer start after 4th of July and ends the beginning of September.

Yepp, totally agree. After living there for years in pnw I can attest.
Washington rain is a little different than what people think of as rain if you're not from the PNW. If you're used to short down pours you really won't see that in western Washington. What you will see are light drizzles that last sometimes for days. Mostly what people don't like though isn't rain related, it's the many many gray overcast sky days you'll have, often with little or no rain at all. Temps in western Washington are pretty moderate, but you do have to factor in humidity.
This is 100% TRUE in regards to the drizzle. As someone who loves sun, it has become too much for me in the last five years. Thanks for the insight and thanks for watching the video!
If you are from Hawaii, the climate in the Pacific Northwest will be a culture shock. If you dislike the Heat and humidity you get, you may prefer it here, but there are many sunny days October - June.
Yeah, the sun is a lot more intense there, than anywhere in the Pacific Northwest. But, more sun sounds pretty nice this time of year.
Light drizzle for days at a time? More like weeks at a time. Pretty much non-stop from October to April. Those rare days in February when the sun comes out, people roll down their car windows and blast the heater just to pretend it's nice out.

Hello from Bellevue 👋 moved here 2 and half years moved from the south. I liked it here pre covid but with my kids being online all day with school I don't get out much anymore :( to really enjoy the beauty I moved here for . Come March we may see things get really worse sadly .

It's my favorite city in the Seattle area, but I understand that it is difficult to be cooped up when you moved somewhere to experience an active lifestyle. I would be curious about your, and others, thoughts on Kitsap County - specifically Silverdale, Poulsbo, and Bainbridge Island.
Hey Adventures of Os! I honestly haven't spent time in any of those places, which is probably weird for someone who has lived in the Northwest over 20 years. I have been on the Olympic Peninsula only a couple of times and I have always gone to Olympia, Seattle, or Central Washington instead of going to the Kitsap areas or the San Juan Islands. By reputation, I know Bainbridge is supposed to be a nice community, but I always try to be honest. I don't know much personally. Those cities aren't very large so I imagine if you want to live in a place that is more quiet, but decent proximity to Seattle if you want to take the ferry. If you have a more specific question, I may be able to answer to that. Are you thinking about moving there?
@@BrothaontheGo yes, we are evaluating moving there. The goal is to get out of the larger cities to some extent, but still have many of the amenities we enjoy nearby.
Gotcha, I get that completely. I grew up in a smaller town, not far from the city and I loved it! I am thinking about doing something similar. Except I need more sun than the Northwest has to offer. Do you already live in the Seattle area or are you looking to relocate there?
@@BrothaontheGo we would be relocating. We currently live in S. CA and I have been here my entire life. Sadly, it has become overrun and way overbuilt. We currently live in a semi-rural community so we are also done with packing up to evacuate for wildfires which are increasing in frequency and veracity. I have spent a good amount of time in the Seattle area for work and we have family who live in Kitsap County.
Oh, Wow! Those California fires are no joke. Right now, Washington is not as crowded as Cali, but if you are in Seattle it is pretty crowded and expensive. So, I like your idea of proximity, but having some distance too. Plus, having people you love can definitely make a big move easier. Just be careful about expecting to see the sun. It's beautiful here in the summer and early fall, but we don't get sun much other times of the year. If you have visited the area already you may already know what to expect, but if not let me know if ya have any other questions. I don't know too much specifically about Kitsap, but if there is anything else you would like to know I'd be glad to help. Hey, good luck with your potential move and take care!

I'm feeling the same way. I didn't want to leave California in the past but after multiple years of wildfire apocalypses and prolonged drought, I'm thinking of getting out as soon as the COVID pandemic is over.

I would have enjoyed this more if you would do the smaller towns of NW Washington! I have lived in this state for my whole life. I live in SeaTac now, and hoping to move back to Lewis county! Small town living is the best for me.
Hey Julie! Thanks for watching and sharing your feedback. Personally, I couldn't agree more. Small-medium sized towns are my preference as well; however, since I am doing an overview the state I figure it's best to just stick to the larger metro areas. If one of those areas sound intriguing then people can look for smaller areas around those cities. Do you have any favorite small towns that people from out of state might not know about?
My question is where is the best place for kids/family/jobs and housing market. Not sure if thats crazy to ask
According to HUD and King County median income is around $140,000. Tge government expects at least $1800 a year raise using that for rental properties going up every 18 months.

If you truly want to know, I think Seattle and its surrounding area is dying, but not dead yet. At the most it has 11 years unless things get straightened out, and I fear it will not happen.

Hey Todd, I am also concerned about the area too. When I am in Seattle or Portland I can't believe how things were boarded up and the tents on the sides of the road. The Pacific Northwest is amazing, but also has a lot of problems.
Hipsters are ok. The wanna be hipsters and bonkers are the ones ruining the city.
The state is a really nice place. I would move back in a heart beat. My only concern is the leadership. The lack of progress with homelessness issues and the riots.
Hey Indy Colbie, Thanks for watching the video! I definitely can agree with what you are saying. If you live in the area or have watched the documentary "Seattle is Dying" you really get the sense just how out of touch leadership is in the area. As far as riots go, they even took over parts of the city in Seattle last summer. There are a lot of concerns I have about Seattle that don't really reflect how nice many other cities are in the state. Thanks for sharing and take care!

I got a got in fed way so I'm looking for nice communities around there. Honestly tacoma doesn't seem that bad in some places. But if you have recommendations near FW, I'd love your input
Hey Cajun Viking, thanks for watching! 1) Welcome to Washington! As far as Tacoma goes it isn't all bad, but they have some areas with a ton of property crime and areas that aren't the safest. So, I would be choosy in Tacoma. 2) As far as recommendations go, what are you looking for in an ideal living situation? 3) As far as Seattle is dying goes, I am sure they use some extreme examples like anyone can have a tendency to. But, if you are in Portland, Seattle, San Fran, or LA there are some areas that are really affected by the governments inaction. That is really the biggest problem in some of these large cities. The leadership rather than the homeless population. Take care!

And I'm coming from Austin now and I'm a fairly liberal person, I guess, but i am no fan of the local mayor and we do have a growing homeless population, primarily in combination with the pandemic and the increased cost of living from all the new people. As far as living situation, it's just me and my pets. Ideally I'd like a reasonable commute, no more than 30 min to fed way and staying under 1500 for rent, which may or may not even be possible. My rent here in Austin shot up from 1100 to 1450 over the last few years. Thanks for the response.
Yeah, it is sad to see how the pandemic has negatively affected so many families. So, the first thing you need to know is that property crime is pretty common in most of the cities in the area. So, I would really make sure to visit the specific places you are looking to relocate to. It can definitely be different on different sides of the same city. I am not sure how accurate, or up to date, this website is, but it could be a good visual to see what areas of a city may be safer than others. www.neighborhoodscout.com/wa/federal-way/crime
If you are looking to keep rent under $1,500 and about 30 or less to Federal Way that is possible depending on what kind of housing you are looking for. However, this does potentially take away Issaquah, Sammamish, and Bellevue because they are about 35-40 minutes away, plus potential traffic. These are the areas I am most familiar with and frankly the some of the best places to live in the area.
I have heard some good things about Renton and University place and they may both be decent options depending on the area. Federal Way itself isn't bad either. If I were you, I would start at Federal Way and see if any of the apartments there are close to your work and meet your standards. The Seattle area can have significant traffic, so if you can be in Fed way that may be ideal. Zillow had about 20 options of $1,500 or less in Federal Way, when I just checked. So, I would think you could make it work if you are moving there pretty soon. Sorry, I don't have more for you. but if you do have any other questions feel free to ask away. Take care!
Thanks for the share and video! Lived here most of my life, and sad to see it go downhill, especially Seattle! I warned my daughter in CA to stay away from there if she could, the homeless, downgraded police, and dirty politics are so bad, it has become a cesspool. I am curious what state YOU moved to? My husband and I are moving to WA from CA. He lived in Tayuha for 20+ years. The dense population here in CA drivers him bonkers. We're looking for peace, quiet, and where neighbors are actually respectful and civil, does such a place exist in WA?
I mean, if she was going to live on 3rd Ave in Seattle, then yeah... otherwise, I think your characterization of Seattle as a cesspool is way off. I live in Capitol Hill and I love it. Yeah, it's a little rough around the edges, but it's a city... comes with the territory. To each his own, but maybe letting your daughter come take a look around and make that decision for herself would have been the better bet.

Hey Sayan, Thanks for watching the video! Sorry for the delayed response, my week has been busy. I need to come clean and tell you that I have never watched Twilight or Fifty shades of grey, so I am not sure what their vibe is. But, you describe your priorities as:
1. Comfy Weather
2. Friendly Folks
3. Peaceful life
4. Beautiful Nature
So, first let me say this. Western and central Washington have about all of the natural beauty a person could want. It is absolutely gorgeous. If you are looking for a more laid back atmosphere I would avoid Seattle, but if you move out a ways in multiple directions there are some nice moderately sized towns.
I could give you a few places to consider in Western Washington that are pretty nice places.
- Blaine, Marysville, or Bellingham areas, North of Seattle
- Puyallup South of Seattle
- Down much further south: Cowlitz and Clark County have some nice places as well: Battle Ground, Vancouver, Ridgefield, Camas and Woodland would be among some good places to consider down there.
- I am not overly familiar with central Washington's cities like Ellensburg or Yakima and Leavenworth or Chelan are a bit touristy. Wenatchee is a smaller town in central Washington, the city itself isn't the most stunning as far as natural beauty, but it is very close to the Okanogan-Wenatchee National Forest. This is one of the most beautiful places in all of the state.
Washington is a pretty expensive state. I think finding an area that fits the job or business you are looking to pursue is key. Once you figure out which places have the best options for income, this will help you pick where to move in the state. Good luck on your pursuit of getting over here and take care!
I've lived here 67 years. It once was a great place to live. Started going down hill 20 years ago. It was full of kind thoughtful people. Not any more - it's full of zombies that are scared to make eye contact or smile. Holes in our streets, shut down of major roads. No where to park and patronize businesses or parks. Can't even leave your windows or doors open during the day without thieves coming in. Delapitated police dept full of bigotry and racism. And the cost of living!! Oh my god no wonder we have so many homeless! 52% higher cost of living. I've been trying to get out of here ever since George W.
This is an awesome video, thank you! I am a 25 year old female from Salt Lake City Utah and am looking to move to Washington in the next two months. What areas would you recommend that are affordable and a good place to make friends my age/good social life for mid twenties folks? I would like to stay in central Washington if possible, mainly looking for cities that aren’t huge but also aren’t very rural. And do you think it would be possible to find a place to rent for around $900/month?
I'm glad you enjoyed it! If you are looking to move to Central Washington is there any places in particular that you are considering? Central Washington is beautiful, but it is pretty rural through out most of it. Places like Wenatchee, Yakima, and Ellensburg come to mind. I don't know too much about them to be honest. You will need to be prepared for a lot of snow in these areas too. If $900 is your budget, you may need to find a roommate in some areas, but Central Washington may have some places you can stay under that budget. What places are you considering?

Thanks for the comment! I love Orange County. I was just there December before last and it's a great place to visit. Seattle and Denver are really popular places to move right now. Especially for those who are looking for places that have great economies, natural beauty, and more of a liberal bend. It is really no surprise to me that people are really trying hard to distinguish between the two cities. I would look to see 1. which is more beneficial for your career or industry, 2. which one has the climate you prefer (Denver will get more sun and more snow), and 3. which one lines up more with your values and budget.
If those are a push on paper, go visit both and/or talk with a realtor. You will need to do this to get a sense of the areas you would want to live in specifically. You may find that this helps you to begin to distinguish other criteria that matters to you. Also, during the pandemic it may be beneficial to see which area fits your needs more. It wouldn't hurt to talk to a couple of businesses in your industry as well and see what they think of the business climate.
@@BrothaontheGo good points i visited both denver and seattle last year liked both of them for different reasons i stayed in downtown next time will have to rent a car and explore the suburbs a bit get a overall feel. OC is nice no doubt but its changed a lot and i hate LA lol
It sounds like you have a solid plan. What is nice about moving right now is that there are lots of resources online, even more so during Covid. Because of this, you can have a lot less surprises than in previous times. Take advantage of this as much as you can to get info on places like Zillow (Real Estate), Smart Asset (tax information and tax calculators), and job search engines. Good luck in making your choice!

Moving to WA from California in the summer. Like others, leaving because of the fires, drought, and high population. Is Bothell is nice and safe area to live?
Hey Bee C! Traditionally, Bothell is a pretty solid place. I am not sure rn during covid how it has been there. But, if you are on the eastern side of King County most of those cities (Kirkland, Bellevue, Sammamish, Issaquah, etc) are pretty nice. They have good education scores low crime numbers, with decent proximity to the city. If you are looking in this area, in my opinion, you are on the right track. If you are looking for somewhere that is different politically Washington has lower taxes, but it is pretty liberal too. Especially Seattle. If you are wanting somewhere more conservative there are a lot of small or medium-sized towns in the state you may check out though. Thanks for watching!

Outside of Seattle metro most of the state is pretty conservative. That goes for Oregon too.
I am not gonna insult Eastern WA or North Dakota, but you are right in that they are not for everyone. But, it could still be worth a look if you are trying to move from Cali, because of politics.

Lol, I totally get it and it will be an adjustment! it can be difficult to live in a place that not many people have a shared experience as you. But, as someone who has lived in Washington for a long time, the vast majority of people I have met have been nothing but kind. Think of it like this, many people won't know what it is like to be you, but many people are very kind and will treat you well regardless of your race. For those coming from out of state, they probably don't know about places like Pasco, Yakima, Moses Lake etc. Most people are interested in Seattle and many of the largest cities in other states are more diverse than Seattle. But, you are correct in pointing out that there are some areas that are more hispanic. Have a great day!
What? Ok, now I am curious. What part of King County is that hispanic? I mean most of it definitely isn't lol.
Eastern parts of Washington are quite racist. You will get glared and huffed at while casually walking around town from personal experience. I wouldn’t recommend living there unless you are a farmer. The rest of Washington is a lot better, the north west cities in particular.
I can relate to being Hispanic to a predominantly white location. I lived in Lake Stevens for a year and it was interesting lol, but people are kind. You just feel a little out of place. But there are Mexicans out there, kind of.
