  • Detailed video with step by step guide on how to remove and then reinstall the Centre Console on a Mk7 VW Golf.
If you accidentally loose your credit card down the back of the console by leaving it on the drinks cover runner and then opening the cover you will need to remove the console to get your credit card back out.

my wife had put her bank card on the retractable cover, on the cup holder. Needless to say it slid back and was lost FOREVER !!! ..........until I found your video. Less than 30 minutes later, including a pit stop for a coffee and the card is back in safe hands (my hands), for now at least. Thank you for your excellent video. Much love to you.

ATM and ID cards fell into the slider gap! Looked for a quick solution to pull them out all along, searched through every comment to no avail 😢. Tried every 18 tricks as I didn’t want/can’t take it to the service centre.
Finally, I grabbed two wooden coffee stirrers and stuck’em along together to make long enough to reach inside there. I was lucky that I was at least able to barely see the cards. Guess what, the instant adhesive ‘superglue’ did the job! Applied a bit glue at the end of the stirrer and simply let it stuck to the card’s edge and waited till both stuck together well. Gradually pulled them out carefully and there you are!!

Double sided tape on a ruler did the trick for me. Such a design flaw - that cards and other items can slide back and into an abyss. Found a tonne of other things that I’d mysteriously lost over the years.

Thanks for the vid. Used this today to pull bank card from the retractable bit. You're a legend for the video.
Screw VW for making that so inaccessible.
I recommend ordering a new card over doing this task for all future card losses who read this comment! 😂

I found removing & replacing the insert very difficult as the front of the cupholder underneath the insert fouled a brace underneath. This prevented the insert from being moved forwards or backward easily while holding the insert up at the front against wiring pulling. Trimming 3 mm from the fouling area would make it so much easier. A lug back by the armrest has to go under a tab of the armrest and a plastic clip on either side of the insert close to the armrest (DOH) doesn't help.
Loosening the armrest box might have helped, but a manual I read did not state that.
It may have been simpler to remove the whole center console with the insert in place. In my car, the armrest box is an integral part of the center console.
My trim around the cupholder / 12V socket was welded on. Before I saw the video, I too thought it looked like it had to be unclipped, but that turned out to not be the case.
I managed without having a seat out but it would have been so much simpler if I had done so.
With all the difficulty, I did not want to run the USB cable under the insert in case I ever wanted to get it out. Instead, I ran it out through a hole in the back of the cubby then back under side trim of the tunnel and into a hole I drilled low in the side of the armrest box. The seat covers it from view. I fed the cable inside the box and out through another drilled hole handy to where I lay the phone on the sliding cover. I trimmed the hole with a rubber grommet.

Hi Salvadoppel - The screws are all just small torx screws. I would recommend you get yourself a screwdriver drill bit set, and use a slow/controlled drill. You can see from the video that the crappy little screwdriver that I used took too long to unscrew the screws. It would have been a lot faster just using a torx drill bit on a drill. Hey, tnx for the great video. Needless to say that a card that was on that retraceable thingy is now back. Only problem I encountered was that after putting everything back together, compartment in front of the shifter is kinda stuck.. It opens half way and then stops so you need to push it forward. Do you know if i missed something (tried reimstalling it a few times)

    • @HowtoMan
      @HowtoMan  9 หลายเดือนก่อน

Hi Dominik. It sounds like the compartment opening mechanism has either got something caught or jammed in it or something has broken. I would pull it out again and fiddle around with it to check it works ok. If it is working ok then you will know something is jamming it, which suggests you need to play around with it a little bit to get it back in. It could be some wires around the back that are getting stuck in the mechanism. Let me know how you go. Thanks for watching, and remember to subscribe.

@@HowtoMan If you want to get the card that fell out from under the armrest, you can reach it from the back, from the side

Thanks for the info @@pospan. I couldn't seem to get mine when it happened so I had to take the full console out.

Hi Mucgamon - If you pull in exactly the same way I did, they should come off. I would recommend you pause the video so check for yourself where the clips are on the inner plastics. This will give you the comfort that you are not going to snap anything. Hope you found the video useful and get them off. Thanks for watching.

Many thanks. We managed to follow this and retrieve my credit card ! What on earth are all the little black pickup sticks down there?

    • @HowtoMan

Without seeing what you are referring to I'm not entirely sure, but they may be the long black pin type pieces of plastic which I believe are the support pieces for the roller cover. It has not happened to mine but I have seen others where they have fallen out. I'm guessing i the roller shutter has been pushed down to hard then they may break/fall out. If the roller shutter is not rolling shut correctly this will be why. Hope this was useful for you. Thanks for watching.
