I am team hub - in fact I have Three - legacy smart things, Hubitat as my main, and augmented with Home Assistant. My favorite automation is one where Amazon delivers our packages INSIDE our garage with MyQ ... it notifies us, locks the access door from the garage to the house if it is open (it is locked if we are gone), unlocks it 10 min after all garage doors are closed AND no presence inside the garage, and records 10min of video from 2 cameras inside the garage while they are delivering.
I always love watching your videos. You’re so engaging and knowledgeable, thanks for all the effort you put in to your videos. I wish you posted every day!
Got a tip for your switch issue at 12:40 - instead of trying to find a pair of smart switches and bulbs that work together, you can simply wire the bulbs so they're always on and then use automations with the switches to control the bulbs. Just run power in to the switch, but not out. Works like a charm for me, and works with any ecosystem!
6:00 I have tried and tried to get this working, no matter what, the FP sensor either picks up ghosts or detects people slightly out of the 'bed' zone and boom lights turn on. I've added some difficulty to it because I want it to sense both me and my wife and if either of us are in bed, only turn on the nightlight, otherwise turn on full light. But have not got it to work at all. Maybe a video idea you can try? when going over some more uses for the aqara sensor? Anyways thanks for the content!
Fun idea/question: for the automation that checks if the baby is asleep before blasting the alert, have you tried using your ESPresence sensor to only play the notification in the room you are in instead?
Thank you for pointing out everything that Google Home can do. As someone new to automations and being a little broke, i just connect everything to Google Home. That way, my non-techy spouse can also use everything. It's simple, it's easy, and it works (the automation part, not the speaking to Home devices part). This is an easy way to simplify life so THANK YOU for sharing what can be done with Google Home. I hope you can make a video of yourself physically showing us the automations and how to set them up because, at this time, the only thing i know how to do is 'If it's 11 p.m., dim these lights' or 'If it's 7 a.m., turn these lights off'. I wouldn't know how to set up some of the more complicated stuff but i want to learn!
Thank you for the information on some of the new sensors. I have used Google Home for years with no hubs. The workaround for Google previously was to buy a smart plug from the same company that your contact sensors comes from use the plugs trigger to trigger your routine through google home.
Thank you for the video. I know that going through Google or Alexa has some drawbacks because we are at its mercy when the Internet fails but that’s all I have so anyway showing me this without the hubs is very helpful. Thank you very much.👍
I've been into smart home devices for last 4-5 yrs. I was inspired to buy a hub seeing one of you video how lightening fast and responsive the home automation becomes just with the help of a hub. Ever since I got myself a hub I cannot stress enough for a hub in any smart home automations. The wifi automations are highly unreliable if you do not have a stable internet connection and I hate why so many companies produce cheap wifi garbage that requires a constant internet as a must to properly function in home automations. I used to get various failed or delayed automations on my wifi bulbs and door sensors where it would take 5-7 seconds lowest to trigger an automation or sometimes not respond at all! but with the help on a hub its almost as fast as snap of a finger. Never ever going back to wifi hubless automations.
Wondering why using a hub is considered bad, or something you want to avoid??? I just bought a Zigbee and Z-Wave combo USB hub for less than $40 dollars, and it's just the size of a normal USB drive.
Gread vid and great content - How are you managing the chromecast to not turn the light off and then on again each time a hover over trailer starts on netflix or similar?
I need this too! I have been looking forever for something like this to control the hue lights in my bedroom without killing power to the overhead light (also hue).
Sorry I should have mentioned it in the video. It’s an Inovelli Red On/Off switch. This one uses Z-Wave but they are coming out with a Thread (white version) soon too. Zooz also has some Z-Wave switches that can do the same thing.
@@SmartHomeSolver no need to apologize, thanks for the reply though. a couple people mentioned it in the comments but when I got to their site, there were more choices than I thought . its almost like my wife sent me to the store!
So I watched another video from Reed and apparently, if you have the right Chromecast device, there are actually triggers in the Google home app automation section, that can detect if something is being played or paused on the device. It doesn't work on my Chromecast, so it either is restricted to certain countries or only works with newer Chromecasts. Hope this helps:)
question about Meross garage door controller you use to control your garage. It says that in order to use this device on a certain garages it needs an extra accessory what accessory if it has the yellow or purple learning button? Do you know what kind its talking about?
So speaking of no hub, question. I use Alexa and Govee light strips and have had a hell of a time trying to find motion sensors that work with both of those without a hub. Do I have a hubless motion sensor option for Alexa+Govee or should I cave and buy a hub?
I’m not sure where I saw this but I thought it was in a video of yours but I can’t find it. I saw in a video where someone had a humidity sensor that would turn on their exhaust fan if they forgot to. What I want to know is what is that sensor and can it be set up the opposite way. I want a humidity sensor that will shut off my exhaust fan once levels go back to normal. We don’t have trouble remembering to turn on the fan. Our issue is knowing how long it should be on after the shower
Due to your large format tiles, you should define your kitchen floor as hardwood in the roborock app and then set the floor direction to match the tiles. Less streaking!
I like the hubs just for the additional options they open up but I completely understand why someone who doesn’t want to do all the nitty gritty would skip it in favor of a simpler set up
Yes I made a video on the second channel about it and there are links to download the blueprint if you want too. th-cam.com/video/p-ZO7Qede5s/w-d-xo.htmlsi=B3f8-5VMoPiQWenz
Im all into the amazon ecosystem so whats a good substitue to the google script editor for me? cuz even though the devices can pair with google, my speakers wont be able to aill they?
So, for someone that has so many things automated in their home, Reed, what are the things you are thinking about how to add automation to? (And, I'm really team "no hub" but most of my stuff uses a hub.)
I think a lot of the stuff with a "hub" would work minus the phone notifications since his "hub" is actually mostly Home Assistant, though I imagine some devices are cloud controlled. As for the rest, I guess it depends on how Google Home works (if like Samsung SmartThings the answer is No, if Apple Homekit it'd largely be yes/simolar but I imagine the scripting would be more limited) and what you mean by "internet" (do you mean broadband uplink or also the local wi-fi?). A lot of the end devices are matter over thread in his examples so as long as his wifi is up, the actual hub "in his "no hub" examples it's google home, but in reality probably HA) will receive the signals either directly or via a border router.
All the Google Home automations require the internet. I’ve talked about it in previous videos on why I prefer a hub. This was more a look of what’s possible without the hub but yes I could have mentioned the local automations as a benefit of a hub. It’s difficult to know what to talk about and what to leave out because this video could quickly be 3 times as long. Especially since I’ve done dedicated videos on the topic.
Can the script editor be used to skip the voice response? For instance when I say “goodnight” I don’t want it to blare its 10 second response to what all it just did.
???? Would you do a video on smart homes for seniors/disabled? Or do you have recommendations on where to find suggestions? Trying to help my parents age in place by setting up a system for them but easy (like physical buttons on somethings) for them to operate. Voice technology doesn't always work well for them. Thanks!!!!
how does this treatlife sensor compare to the aqara or even the EP1 (i have both sensors) mm wave sensor? also it looks like an inovelli blue switch in the video, did you see they are coming out with new white switches, curious to how these will be!
I'm kind of allergic to "Cloud connected devices". So while these automations are awesome, I have no idea how to do this in a local-only Home Assistant (yes, all my smart stuff sits in a seperate VLAN where only HA has some internet access). Could you make a video about such automations, but skip everything that relies on anything cloud? I have a Sonoff Zigbee 3.0 hub using ZHA and a Conbee2 flashed to Matter. I don't have anything for Matter yet though.
The automation for controlling the TV is actually very specific. Certain google tv or chromecast tv devices don't have media monitoring triggers. My android tv on my sony bravia and 4k chromecast with Google tv don't trigger based on media but my old chromecast with Google tv does.
I have a couple of LED night lights by my kitchen sink, plugged into a 3 in 1 outlet strip - I have looked for something simple that would sense the nightfall, turn these on, then off again in the am - the sensor would need to be somewhere not close to these lights, as in a windowsill. I have Apple computers, and an iphone.
All Pro Shades and we went with the ones on the track. It blocks the light more and is better in the wind but it is pricey. We have been super happy with them though!
Depends where you live, but in Arizona (southern) - Tucson Rolling Shutter and Screens, or SunShield Products. Can use a Bond Controller with Home Assistant to automate them. Or any other SOMFY compatible controller or remote.
Cannot for the life of me get Home Presence to work on my Android phone / Google script editor combo but it seems to work on my phone / Home app combo for pre-existing automations!
I am sure that a huge number of automations in the house can be implemented without smart devices at all. A humidifier in the bathroom, night lighting, lighting of shelves in cabinets, emergency light in case of a power outage - all this is I could implemented using dumb devices. Costs less, works better and requires minimal setup, there are now so many DIY components for a penny with which you can do interesting projects without smart home devices
I have a cool automation idea with the kasa smart light switch so what you do is on the kasa app you set the light switch so when is double tapped it turns on a kasa smart plug and then you can go on the Alexa app and say when the device is powered on to turn on multiple other lights
Reed been watching your channel for over a year. Learn a lot. Need in having alexa turn on my lights from my google calendar event (using only key words to trigger) 1 hr before the schedule time selected. Any thought from you or following followers. Thanks for you time.
Thread devices do require a hub. A hub can be simply a google smart speaker like the regular Nest Hub, but you still need at least one. Every other automation can done if you have decent Wi-Fi and a Google account
Google - depends on their "strategy of the week". This will probably all be "retired" next week and replaced with a new "AI" automation system with a higher subscription level and a higher need for access to your personal information. No Cloud, No vendor Apps, and No Hub per vendor - Home Assistant will do nicely. Try privacy, choice, and sustainability, without vendors wanting control of your home or pounding you with unnecessary marketing.
@SmartHomeSolver I am interested to know what smart switch you showcase in 12:01 Smart bulb switch. What automation did you set up? How? I understand it requires a hub, but I would still appreciate details.
Would be great to mention using Google Nest display in the future or the "contact" point for these devices. Not all the people have a nest display or any display. You made it sound a bit too easy to configure it, in this case just the sensor and Google which is not enough. Found the hardway after buying Aqara P2 sensor and not having the right hub for it. Edit*: I don't want to sound too harsh, I use Google, Alexa and experimenting a bit with HA but I consider myself a beginner that falls easy 😁 in trying stuff only to not research it long enough or buying on impulse when seeing a great video (I watch some of yours for inspiration). I started with Google and I have only first generation, no display but will add in time that also.
All of these home automation platforms use a hub. Try setting up a Google or Alexa routine witb just the app on your phone. I like using hubs as gateways to my Alexa devices.
Umm none of your automations with Bond made the list? (I think you use them for ceiling fans but they could also control motorized non-smart curtains.)
Needing a home automation to tell you to stop showering is a bit of a stretch dont you think. If its for a child i get it but as an adult i would think i know when to stop showering
I would categorize a hub as SmartThings, Hubitat, Homey, and Home Assistant. They are the extra systems to connect more devices to something like Amazon, Google or Apple that are more traditionally voice assistants.
Automations that don't need hubs = devices that connect directly to each other like the tradfri stuff from IKEA. Google home is clearly a hub. It acts as central point of connection of diverse smart devices, it acts as the source of the automations . Just like home assistant...
I don't understand what this video is. Two sponsors in one video? It has to be sponsored by Google because there's no mention of other hubless systems like Alexa, Apple, Smart Life, etc. And even then, regular viewers know you use Home Assistant in your home, not Google, but you're talking like you have this all set up? Not mad, just really confused.
Sorry if this video was confusing. I’m happy to explain though. First, this video only has one sponsor and that’s Panasonic. Google has never given me any money and I have no incentive to cover the Google smart home system. The reason I picked Google as the system is because of the low bar to entry and what it’s capable of doing. I think I bought my Nest Hub display version 2 for about $50 on sale. Yes Apple could also fit into the “hub-less” category but it costs more and the automations couldn’t do half of the examples I showed. So I’m showing what’s possible. Yes I still use Home Assistant and I talk about the advantages of my “hub” (Home Assistant) throughout the video. There are lots of people who subscribe to this channel who do not use Home Assistant. I like to make videos for them as well and show where some of the limitations are if they choose not to add a hub to their smart home.
@@SmartHomeSolver Thanks Reed, I think most of us understood the point 😊 FWIW I started watching your channel while using Google Home, and have since migrated to Home Assistant. I think I'm your perfect audience haha
@@SmartHomeSolveryea this video is a little off brand for you. You don't really explain what you are doing it for. Did you actually do this all in Google home or just do it in HA. Throw a link to your Google scripts.

So, 'no hub needed', but everything is dependent on Google havesting your data and life... brand-specific hub's are annoying, so open standards like ZigBee, Matter, Thread, Wifi etc are the way to go.
Yep there are compromises for sure. I’m not saying it’s better to not use a hub but more of what’s possible and what’s not. I’ve made plenty of videos recently saying how much I like Home Assistant for reliability, privacy, and all those things. Some people don’t care about Google using their data so to each their own.
I will only use devices that work with home assistant. I'm not interested in other platforms, especially not when they try to send my info into the cloud.
The term hub is not as clear as it was a while ago. Many Google Home users have a Google Nest display already so not having to buy a separate SmartThings hub, Hubitat, Homey or Home Assistant that is a new system that also has to be managed and a new thing to learn.
Technically not, a Google Home is a limited hub while a HA configured eliminates the need of another hub. But consider who would care about a video about "automations without a hub." That would either be someone who is on an ecosystem already: for most of us either Google or Apple. Those of us who upgraded to Home Assistant wouldn't care because another hub is just maybe a more convenient way of not having to buy and set up a dongle or proxy for whatever Thread, Zigbee, Z-wave, or whatever (bluetooth, IR blast, RF). Now he could have been more specific and said "in a typical Google Home setup without an additional hub" but honestly this level of detail is not something the target would care about. As for me, I'm on Apple Homekit when I'm not already in Home Assistant so the only thing I found relevant is which automations he still uses, as well as you can see the compromises you'd have to do to use thread or wi-fi in place of Zigbee (for the most part here).
Why get strips in the bathroom that you don't need when you could just get RGB downlights to only turn on dim red during the night, which won't wake you up...
As someone who prefers hub based subsystems because they tend to be bulletproof and then just tie all the heavier lifting with Home assistant… this video was complicated….
Not sure why the heavy emphasis on using Google in this video. I would have preferred it just not be mentioned and just talk about the automations in general. For the garage door example, he mentioned the Google Script Editor but, IMO, should have also mentioned making a group for the garage doors in HA, or whatever Alexa or HomeKit need. I didn't finish the video...
Are you team hub or no hub? 🤨 Hopefully this video sparks some automation ideas, no matter what you use in your smart home!

No Cloud, No vendor Apps, and No Hub per vendor - Home Assistant will do nicely. Try privacy, choice, and sustainability, without vendors wanting control of your home or pounding you with unnecessary marketing.
Can't you use Contact sensor on your Garage doors and change colour if both meet the condition instead Script
Please do an episode on current HomeKit/Matter RGB recessed lights!
The Athom mmWave sensors are cheap and can run native ESPHome.
@SmartHomeSolver
I am interested to know what smart switch you showcase in 12:01 Smart bulb switch. What automation did you set up? How?
I understand it requires a hub, but I would still appreciate details.
I want to see how much you can do without any cloud connection.
You don't need a hub, you just need knowledge, greetings from Uruguay
That’s a good point and thanks for bringing it up.
how to to the thing with the tv
Toad Wii Remote with Wii Motion Plus Inside
Best Video ever
Thanks Reed.
All of these home automation platforms use a hub. Try setting up a Google or Alexa routine witb just the app on your phone. I like using hubs as gateways to my Alexa devices.
Wait... when you say "connects to Google", isn't that connecting to a Google smart speaker, or to put it another way... a HUB?
and now: Do your automations with a broken internet connection
Pls make another Video about nfc Tags and Google Home
Umm none of your automations with Bond made the list? (I think you use them for ceiling fans but they could also control motorized non-smart curtains.)
The routine for turning lights on and off when ever you pause or play the tv? Anybody, help?
Needing a home automation to tell you to stop showering is a bit of a stretch dont you think. If its for a child i get it but as an adult i would think i know when to stop showering
Doesn't need a hub... Proceeds to use google home... A hub...
It acts as central point of connection of diverse smart devices, it acts as the source of the automations
I think he's just saying most of his main automations are possible with just Google Home, even though we all know Home Assistant is King.
Well I don’t have Home Assistant, so this is helpful 👍
Now best automation and complex on via home assistant 😅
So where does the code that does the automations run? It’s running somewhere. The scripts must be somewhere. That is a hub.
I will only use devices that work with home assistant. I'm not interested in other platforms, especially not when they try to send my info into the cloud.
hubbb all day
Aren't you basically using Google as your hub? How is what's Google doing any different than say, HA?
Its not, he's just click baiting. Hit the Thumbs down.
The term hub is not as clear as it was a while ago. Many Google Home users have a Google Nest display already so not having to buy a separate SmartThings hub, Hubitat, Homey or Home Assistant that is a new system that also has to be managed and a new thing to learn.
@@BigglareI mean at that point wouldn’t your router also be considered a hub? I think by “Hub” he means a dedicated hub like smart things.
The Apple Home fits that definition also.
Why get strips in the bathroom that you don't need when you could just get RGB downlights to only turn on dim red during the night, which won't wake you up...
i think you dropped this #adforgooglestuff
Inovelli’s Matter over Thread smart light switch would probably work with Google home directly that you illustrated in your light switch segment.
Oh yeah that would probably work! I need to get my hands on one.
Basically hubs are only necessary if you have Zigbee or Z-Wave devices.
or wifi
or google home
or Alexa
Or Apple Home
or Home Assistant
As someone who prefers hub based subsystems because they tend to be bulletproof and then just tie all the heavier lifting with Home assistant… this video was complicated….
I try to stay away from Wi-fi like the plague. Too many wifi devices causes congestion on the 2.4/5 GHz band. Get a HUB!
Does anyone know if you can get Siri to announce stuff like Alexa.
Need to change the title to My 17 Favourite home automations using Google
Not sure why the heavy emphasis on using Google in this video. I would have preferred it just not be mentioned and just talk about the automations in general.
For the garage door example, he mentioned the Google Script Editor but, IMO, should have also mentioned making a group for the garage doors in HA, or whatever Alexa or HomeKit need.
I didn't finish the video...
