    I hope that all of these anthologies are eventually released in a single volume. I'd happily pay to have them. This short in particular is an excellent piece of world-building and has me hoping that maybe Daniel and his crew will decide to produce a second audio drama with characters based in Tantalus dealing with the collapse while our existing heroes continuing their adventures in the nebula. Or they could do a prequel of how the scientists and government officials handled the revelation that most human life in Tantalus was essentially doomed. I'm also hoping for the return of Jasper Ravi too. Yes, the Avalon was destroyed, but he could have made it to an escape pod.

      For spin offs I think a prequel centered around the union and CDF war would be pretty interesting .

    It finally put into context the resource crisis of Tantalus, even with such advanced technology. I can totally believe that the people in power ignored the resource crisis until the last minute and started wars instead (looking at the real world right now) which worsened both the situation and the economy.
    So immersive, they really are just like us for real! Daily dose of existential dread in every news broadcast!
    The most unlikely part is the rational and calm discourse without a crackpot for a "balanced" point of view, but that just shows how more advanced they are than current society.

      This kind of feels like an NPR broadcast in the U.S. (not sure what other country's equivalent would be), they usually don't have a crackpot.

    I love this, how you're building that background information and in-universe lore in a way that's so very organic and doesn't rely on Weber-style infodumps!

    As a huge biology/ecology/Sustainability nerd, I adore that this brings up Carrying Capacity as a major plot/worldbuilding point. So many scifi writers handwave their life support systems, and never take their intrinsic limits seriously.
    Sadly , a lot of people in our real world dont take our own hard scientific limits to growth seriously either

      If this series were hard sci-fi, there wouldn’t be a resource crisis.

    I really enjoy this series and its world but the resource crisis makes little sense since carrying capacity isn’t a real concern when you are interplanetary and have fusion. However, The Expanse, Star Wars, and Star Trek have done it, so I will let it be.

    • @yourfriend8052
      @yourfriend8052 7 หลายเดือนก่อน +4

      The fusion fuel is what is in short supply, that’s the scarcity. Drift is very finite, and it is used in the coils of drift drives to accelerate the reactant in order to be efficient.

      Tantalus is a very small extragalactic star cluster consisting primarily of long-lived red dwarves. As a result, there is not a lot of stellar activity, such as supernovas, compared to our own Milky Way Galaxy, to create and spread around heavy elements and minerals. This includes phosphate, which is essential for the creation of arable soil from which to grow food, which is the primary concern in this setting. Honestly, the fact that this stellar body had enough phosphate to create even a few planets with Earth-like conditions and resources, let alone to sustain an exponentially expanding population of billions for almost three centuries with only sixteen stars out of five hundred, could be considered a minor astronomical miracle in and of itself.
      They talked about all of this in a podcast discussing the science behind the Sojourn.
