I plugged in the block heater anytime it even dropped below 30f. It was hot enough that I had INSTANT heat in the cab. And don’t forget to add the fuel anti-gel when it’s really cold.
I got over a million miles on a few of those motors. They start cleaner and faster, and they don't even knock like that cold. I always give them some time to idle so the cylinders can come up to temp and expand. In my opinion, getting on the throttle right off the bat is asking for cylinder scoring. Especially that cold when the oil has settled off critical components.
Basically, unburned fuel! Diesels run on combustion or pressure so great in the cylinder that it explodes the fuel. When there cold they will run on two out of six cylinders , so the rest are just exhausting unburned fuel as white smoke. This is a simple explanation, theres more going on but,,,, hope this helps.
@@stevehamman4465 the new tier 4s won't smoke but they will put out vapor. I got an old Oliver super 77 diesel and that thing will clear mosquitoes off the whole farm. Hahaha!
@@danw6014 , I'm 60 and worked on farms . Didn't live on one but me and my three dudes were the highest paid crew for bringing in the hay before all these new machines. Neighbor had an Oliver ,, big arse tractor,, it was a two cylinder engine. It was cool to hear it run at frickin midnight , pop,,,pop ,,, pop ,,pop ,,pop,pop pop,pop ! Got to get the crops in when the weather says so!
Not everyone has the ability to plug it up every single night and it's not just about the sight uts also about the sound. Yeah ideally you want to plug in so you have a easier time starting the equipment the next day but regardless if you're batteries are good and the motor is in good condition its going to start.
