Not day trips at all. Great ocean road is 4hours drive from Melbourne, so best to stay overnight to enjoy sights. Phillip island is 2.5 hrs from melbourne, lots to see and do such as seal and whale cruises and pelican feeding, as well as penquins, so probably need 2 full days at least to see every thing.
Melbourne is such a cool city, very unique.

@@geoffcohen613 agree, they are the best to take overnight trips. But day trips to Great Ocean Road is still doable.
