Dan, please do show us a hard-facing repair of an "Blacksmith's" anvil like the one you have that needs repair. Even if you don't get 1K thumbs-up!

@ 5:24, glad I'm not the only one, haha.
Hope you'll do a vid on fixing up the anvil even if this didn't hit 1K.

Worth noting if you have tig capability you can use just about anything as a rod, ie, if the die is made from 1080 use some 1080 rod, that way you can match the parent metal like for like, can also hard face things then with any tool steel you have laying around, old drill bits works nice 🙂

tip for preheat for welding. soot the part to be heated with an acetylene flame only. Then add oxygen to your flame to produce a neutral flame. when the soot burns off a 200 degree Fahrenheit preheat has been achieved.

I think the hardface rods will probably hold up, for my home made Anvil I did as you mentioned, used a gp rod but I used a stainless rod for the top layer designed for welding dissimilar metals, the specs on the box mentioned die repairs, I've also been told that low hydrogen rods will give a harder surface but I've not had the chance to try it out yet

My old twin track anvil is welded with 7018 low i's and has held up surprisingly well 👍

Sounds like you were experiencing arc blow at the end of a welding rod on d/c it happens when the welding rod heats up the arc wanders all over

I also have a Peter Wright that is in need of repairs. I have some 7018 and 9018 LH rod, what is your thoughts on using this without a cover of hard facing 🤔
Yes, put me down for the anvil repair video 👍

I, unfortunately, was weight hungry and got a 156lb anvil but ut has a decent sweep to it and a lot of cut marks in it. Would I beable to weld it with the hard facing rods and ground flat. There is prolably less than a half-inch of the sweep.

I have an old Peter Wright, 134#, that has a dead spot at one corner of the heel. I'm assuming to repair it I'll have to cut out the corner portion, lay down a base weld and cover it with the hard surfaceing rod. Any thoughts, suggestions? I've also read to just leave it alone and use as is.

I'm curious how you would use hardfacing rods for an anvil repair but keep your temper. I have a couple fairly beat up anvils but have been too scared to loose temper by doing hardfacing edge repairs.

Research the "Gunter Method of Anvil Repair". It's been used on thousands of anvils without any worry. If my anvil was really beat up, I'd opt to simply coat the whole face rather than try spot welding. That way you know you have a uniform thickness and strength.
