I’m one of those hobbyists with an expensive camera (Canon R6 mark ii ). My justification is that my hands shake a lot these days (I’m 71 and had Guillain Barré many years ago). A camera with IBIS and in lens stabilisation makes it so much easier for me under the circumstances. Anyhow, love your videos.
Interesting Podcast Scott. Yes regarding the Jaguar Campaign, well controversy certainly got the people talking, but they had better watch out. Bud LIGHT did a campaign earlier using a transgender Influencer to readdress the brand and give it some grunt. Well the only grunt that Bud light got was a BILLION dollar loss in sales, so Jaguar better be careful. Having been a commercial director for a few decades, we always made car spots to suit the target audience, emphasising what made people FEEL good, while driving that brand.
Asking children to review ad photography and ads in general is a great technique. Children are unfiltered in how they see things and their perceptions are closer to the subconscious. Adults are too far isolated from their own imagination.
Interesting. I would have thought that what prevents adult from speaking from their subconscious has more to do with layers of filters added and evolved over their lifetime rather than being 'isolated from their own imagination'.
Now Volvo is genius. They came out with a great ad right after this self destructive jaguar ad showing they understand. They actually understand that they have to target an actual audience who might want to buy their product. And why they might want to buy their product. Take note Jaguar they told a story that was touching and made me want to buy a Volvo for my family. Who was your audience for Jaguar? Who?
How many people have seen volvo's video? How many people have seen Jag's video? Jag's strategy is genius. From a brand most people forgot still sold cars to the most talked about brand in the world with a 30sec video? Genius.
@deim well since Volvo stock has gone up since the release of that commercial several days after Jaguars release, I'm going to say quite a few. Its been all over the news channels when they go to commercial. Volvo saw the disgust from people raising families and said let's speak to these people who care about keeping their children safe. Now that was a brilliant commercial.
@@deimand genius isn't angering the the generations with the most wealth away. That's stupidity to push DEI. The younger generation might think it's hip and cool but they don't have wealth like generation x and the boomers.
I have been thinking about buying a car early next year and Jaguar have just dropped of the list of options, so not so genius, bearing in mind the purpose of advertising. They could have got even more views with a video aimed at Nazi child molesters, but buyers of expensive cars don't want that association either! What really gets me about the ad is the internal contradicion. Nothing is fresh. No moulds were broken. Zero internal diversity. Its just cookie cutter camp. Tell AI to make an ad that looks like a group of students did it as a joke poking fun at woke nonsense and this is exactly what you'd get.

I love your podcast and I am so glad you are back! Best used camera imho right now is the canon eos R if one wants amazing video quality. It does have a pc sync port if you buy the grip. I believe it to be the most underrated camera right now. For photography only nothing beats my attachment to the canon 1ds mk II and its filmic photos.
I’ve been shooting headshots with a d800. Beautiful colors and no complaints until yesterday when the port for tethering went out in the middle of a shoot! Probably cheaper to buy another body than have Nikon fix that. Definitely a fantastic camera, but I have a z7 on the way from mpb because it’s also a steal for only around 1k. I prefer dslr’s, but IBIS and the ability to zoom in and check focus on viewfinder (I’m using manual focus lenses) are why I’m going to use that one instead. Sorry for rant- love the d800. Colors are gorgeous. If you really want great deals check out the old Nikon ais lenses. My 105 f2.5 was about $120 and i prefer the look of images made from it over the modern 105 1.4 (which was sharp as hell but maybe a bit more than necessary?)
Fun, informative show, thanks🙏 Nikon is pronounced NEEkon because it's Japanese. As many languages were converted to Roman letters fairly recently, there are standardized vowel sounds and spelling, unlike English. The vowel sounds are: a - bah | i - bee | u - boo | e - bed | o - bow I've noticed this also works in German, Chinese and many other languages. As a result, you can pronounce foreign words and names properly by reading them. Example: Leica gives us 2 vowel sounds, which following the rules suggests it's pronounced 'Lay-ka' Child critique is great! Another thing a child brings is lack of authority. My responses were different, but it never occurred to me one of us was right. If I disagreed with an authority, I'd wonder who was wrong. Self-doubt. A car needs CarPlay or it won't be considered
I like the Jag advert even though it was a bit of a Zoolander parody. Logo wise I hate the G in the logo it just grates. I’m interested to see the car. The sneak photos look epic.
Only cause you mentioned it. God I miss going to the Cookie when I lived in Leicester! Used to run gigs and also do all of the media in there with DMU Music Society for years when Antony Hopkins was still there, I wonder if he still owns the Cookie cause it was a brilliant location for gigs and also getting to hang out with bands after their gigs!
Thanks Scott. Definitely wasn't expecting that for a review; a 7/10 and pasta machines are boring. Absolutely brilliant! Thank goodness I didn't send you the coffee grinder pic 🤣 That has made my day. Thank your little helper for me.
I have worked with marketing pros and when this type of style ad comes up, they'd say, beautiful! What's their product, feelings? We'll see when the management team gets sacked because sales are submarining, or not.
Thanks for talking about the Print vs. Digital portfolio for review. I was always taught to have your work printed in a book. If I can get away with curating a high res digital portfolio on an iPad i would much rather do that. I can get an older iPad cheaper and use them for portfolio drop offs with printed leave behind cards and marketing stuff.
Your kid is a genius. Wisely, you left the best for the closing. How old is he? My kid excelled too, but in the areas of my interest, he couldn’t have curated the photography :))
Well I’m happy with the review of my picture even if it did get downgraded from a 10 to a 4 and yes he is right it’s the background graffiti that makes the image in my opinion which I obviously can’t take credit for. Thanks for the roast Scott. 😊
It was a terrible advert trying to woo a new market that they haven’t a chance in attracting, whilst at the same time shafting their established customer base. Your TH-cam publicity comparison is miles off the mark because one relies on views, engagement and the other relies on people spending big money. They ain’t gonna spend sht if this is what they’re being offered.

Then...also....not a single glimpse of the a car anywhere. I just thought it was a very bad choice of a creative direction for a car company, even if they are trying to attract a totally new audience.
Of course, I had to check out the Jaguar campaign - yeah, it’s a very effective brand refresh - but even better is all the old farts totally losing their shit over it!
I liked the Jag ad. For me, it was sort of tastefully derivative of Warhol, in several ways. Perhaps most of all as a manifestation of his statement about speed as a visual image.
