One of the best old sci-fi movies ever. One of my favorites as a kid.

I loved these old Super 8mm home films of the horror and sci-fi classics! They could be viewed in 50 foot reels ( 5 minutes approx. ) or the longer 15 minute versions on 200 foot reels! Back in the 1960's , these were the way to obtain your own library to watch whenever you wished! Half the joy was setting them up in your super 8mm home movie projector, and having a few of your friends over at your home, sitting in the back yard with a white sheet `movie screen' borrowed from Mom's bed linen and watching a double or triple feature! Just like having your own drive-in movie theater! Mom even made the refreshments for everyone...all for free! Man, the pleasant memories of those precious summers ! There will never be times like that again! I'm so glad to have grown up in the '50's and the '60's!

You knoooooowwwwww.....for 'that' time, this movie must have seemed very impressive. I mean, simply viewing THIS short version of it is really remarkable, and was done well.....even by 'today's standards' (IMHO, of course) !!

Donald Curtis, who played one of the generals, was a well known supporting actor, including a role in The Ten Commandments. He became a preacher and founder of the Unity Church in Dallas. Among his distinctions: he was married eight times. Number six was my mother's best friend, so I knew him pretty well. He was an engaging fellow to talk to, but basically a con man. I used to listen to/watch evangelists for the humor of it (the best ones are gone) and I got a kick out of hearing his radio broadcast one day regarding marriage. He never disclosed on that show what an expert he was on the subject....or perhaps better termed, a veteran of the subject. He divorced my mom's friend...big mistake. She had bought several acres of prime real estate for him to build his huge new church upon, given him a Rolls, 1/2 a floor of a luxury high rise condo in Dallas's wealthy Turtle Creek area, a golf membership in Dallas's most expensive (but not exclusive) club and more money than you can count. He could have philandered his head off (play on words?) and still had all of that...instead he went on to wives seven and eight....not nearly so lucrative..

So many fun facts that I’m sure so many fans already know. But I just can’t help here the haunted mansion ghost host when the aliens speak. Of course that’s thanks to Paul Frees :-)
Ray’s whirling saucer animation, and destruction sequences are just absolutely amazing! And don’t you love that the waste water treatment plant sound was used for the alien ships.

My only beef with the aliens is with the suits. Like, if they had elbow joints, why didn't the suits? And if they didn't, how the hell did they go through life stiff-arming everything?

Very nice transfer! But it was the Columbia narrator’s propensity to “describe” the (obvious) on-screen action that I found off-putting, even as a kid in the 1970s. As a result, I never showed the narrator-heavy digests to any audience, as how could anyone take it seriously, given much of the narration was so unnecessary?
Regardless, I still have all these Super 8 films, as they were a lot of fun in the day.
