Looks like pretty good results. Files can be cleaned that way and using an acid will dissolve the stuck material. Of course the type acid you use depends on how long you put the file in the acid as well... Thumbs Up!
First off, if the file surface reflects light, the teeth have been laid down from improper use. You demonstrate improper use near the end of your clip. Do not drag the file across the material on the back stroke, lift the teeth off the material during the back stroke. Once a file rusts to any great degree, the edge of the teeth have rusted as well destroying their edge. Acid washing and scrubbing a misused and abused file leaves one with a clean, dull file. Learn proper filing technique and how to use a file card. Then after carding a file, oil it, and for Pete's sake hang it or put it in a makeshift sheath and do not chuck it in a drawer loose with other files. They will ruin their hardened, sharp, brittle edges by contacting each other. Pretty soon you have a chunk of hardened high carbon steel material for making scrapers, a utility knife, a paper weight, or to use as land-fill.
regarding dragging the teeth on the backstroke, We have all been taught this. Fireball tool did an amazing in depth test and showed that the files did not dull due to back dragging. It surprised me but the results were hard to argue with. th-cam.com/video/52d0TmmQ5yI/w-d-xo.html
Argue all night and day if you like, what I have found is files don’t get dull from ‘ back stroking ‘, they get dull from filing things that are too hard. You can use picture perfect filing strokes and lift up for return stroke with every cut, if material is too hard it will dull right out.
Great way to restore an old file instead of scrapping it. My parents grew up in the Great Depression and there was an old saying back then, "Use it up and wear it out. Make it do or do without'.

In high-school my shop teacher said use lemon juice, but vinegar is an acid too. As far as using a toothbrush buy a card file. Wire brush used to clean files. The file wasn't dull it was full of rust deposits that clogged the fillets.
Your title should be how to CLEAN and remove surface rust and dirt from a dirty rusted file, without a file card. Also claiming razor sharp??? You didn't sharpen anything, you just cleaned it. If you clean your file when you're done using them, they could last you a lifetime. Storage of file is just as important . I see guys with drawer of their toolbox loaded with a pile of files, and they wonder why most of them are not sharp anymore. Although it is better than some people I have worked with who clean their files on a spinning wire wheel on bench grinder. Please don't ever touch my files.
File card, okay, I didn't know what it was called for sure when I made my comment, but I have a file brush (card), has short metal bristles and gets the crud out from the cuts. Thanks for the correct name for that brush.

There is another process to clean and sharpen an old file very quickly, which consists of leaving the file immersed in pure lemon juice for twenty four hours and then washing it in running water to remove the acid from the lemon, washing it with liquid detergent and then drying it well with a cloth, spreading it on the Use a lot of wd file or any other release agent and let it dry in the sun, I can guarantee that the file will look like new. 👍

Try using a file card. If you card the file once in a while and keep it oiled with thin oil it will stay sharp for a long time. Then always use the file PROPERLY. Don't file on the back stroke The file card is just a fully looking wire brush MADE for cleaning and maintaining a file.
It is a great video and it works. Now you need to learn how to prevent it from happening again. Don’t drag your file back across the work piece. That bends the sharp cutting-edge over making it dull. Also invest in a file card or a small wire brush. While you are filling fell for when the file fells like it hits a bump. That is a burr caught in the teeth of the file. Used the file card or wire brush to clean out the teeth. The WD40 is a good idea. The name WD40 stands for “water displacement formula 40. It will retard the rust process. Also keep some chalk handy especially if you are filling soft materials especially aluminum. It keeps the soft material from clogging the file which will also give you a smoother finish..

Don't you realize that the part of the file that rusts away first is the sharp edge? If a file rusts--it is now blunt. Permanently. Removing the rust does not sharpen it The sharpness is gone forever.

A machnists told me over 50 years ago the way to sharpen a file is to place it in a container of acid. Never told me how long. Have 40 to 60 year old files from 4 to 10" long still fairly sharp because I store them on pulley lagging ( Grover rubber mat ) not touching another file and never place anything on top of them in one of my tool chest.
Thank you for your kind words! I'm glad you find my approach convincing. Feel free to follow my example and recreate the techniques demonstrated in the videos. Thank you for watching, and stay tuned for more useful ideas and content! ❤️❤️❤️
Nice video but the cost of hydrochloric, vinegar, baking soda plus all the hours spent on it. Not only that it wasn't sharppen it was just thoroughly cleaned. I'll just purchase a new one. Can't be that expensive.
Idea being that the acid actually thins down the edges of the individual ridges on the file making them sharp again? Certainly cleaning always helps a dirty or rusty file, but sharpen it? I think a microscopic examination would be required to tell the truth of it
When I saw the click bait in the title of "how to" "sharpen a file" & "razor sharp" I thought I better check into the comments. Those words have meanings and many of this type of video results in a Russian fellow cleaning an old dull file making it look nice but essentially perform no different to a rusty ol worn file. This is just another one of those videos 😢. Stop it, get some help. Do people even know what razor sharp even IS? 🤦♂️You can have file re-sharpened by file manufactures but Ive yet to see ANYone fobit at home. So for this video 0:06s in, I'm gonna have to exercise my right to hit the dislike button 😮

If a file rusts--it is now blunt. Permanently.
Removing the rust does not sharpen it The sharpness is gone forever.

pues hay que usarla!!!!
Brake cleaner works too I amagine.
I could have cleaned, and sharpened it; in less than an hour. With all the work, and time, you spent, it would have been easier to buy a new file!
How would you do it?
@amanami4126 I would have used Baking Soda, and Vinegat to begin with, let it set for 2 hours, then dryed it it, and used W-D 40, and let it penetrate! I am sorry, if you thought I was being a Critic! Your method did give me ideas for using it!
And that is less then one hour????@@davidgriego278
And then make a knife out of the old one!
@steveolson69 I have a Knife(s) I even made one, ptrobably not as Good as you can.

Do the job properly , place in side a pipe with ends blocked so the file is entirely cleaned

Where are you from? The way you do things is very convincing to me. I'll follow your example and recreate some of your ideas.❤❤❤

Brass is a better alternative to copper in the last stage of sharpening.
Nice video but the cost of hydrochloric, vinegar, baking soda plus all the hours spent on it. Not only that it wasn't sharppen it was just thoroughly cleaned. I'll just purchase a new one. Can't be that expensive.
What are the liquids you use here?? Thanks for the video!!! ❤❤
Thanks for your interest! I used vinegar in the process. I'm glad you enjoyed the video! Stay tuned for more tips and techniques! ❤️

I use a copper penny with oil to remove rust from a gun barrel.
Thanks for sharing your method! It's great to hear about different techniques for rust removal. I appreciate your attention to the video, and I hope you found it helpful. Stay tuned for more content and tips coming your way! 😊❤❤
Did we hear Axl Rose whistling " Patience " in the background ?

I use a file brush 😁
Thank you so much for your feedback! I'm glad you enjoyed it! Stay tuned for more excellent content coming your way!❤😊
I achieve the same result with a wire brush in 3 minutes
...or you can use a file card - designed to clean out the teeth on a file. Available widely. No waiting for three days and having waste chemicals to dispose of.
That is unless he was trying to chemically sharpen the file after knocking the heavy material out of the teeth...
what rockwell is the file? low rockwell files not worth it to start with
Wire brush same angle as the groove or make a knife later
Might I suggest evaporust?

Looks good. I think brake cleaner and a copper brush could have same results in a fraction of time.
Oh the copper pipe and old shoe trick! 😂

Just surprised a file card didn't come into play anywhere here.
