    Owned SAABs on four occasions, a model 96 while in college, bought a 99 in Minnesota and drove it to Alaska, later an early 900 and last a Sonnet V-4. Loved them all.

    Last week I was driving my white 91 900S convertible top down on the mean streets of Littleton when a young lady honked behind me in an exact duplicate of the car you bought- 91 white turbo. We chatted at the stop light. She had 200K and I had 167K. Just getting broke in. Awesome build quality on these cars. Old SAABs rule!
    I guess only old farts and young ladies like the Borg Warner 3 speed slushbox in heavy traffic!

    I lived in Boston 1987-91. Saabs were basically the coolest car you could drive if you lived in Boston at that time. My buddy’s Dad had a red 900 convertible and I still remember passing him on the highway to Maine one weekend and he was driving with the top down in the rain and was staying dry (he said later). I ended up with a 9000, which was probably better than the 900, but no nearly as cool. One of my college roommates got a black 900 with tan leather (he had a great post-college job) and that car attracted more attention on the Cape than any other car. The best one, though, was my buddy in Boston who had a 900 SPG. That car was, as they say in Boston, a pissah! Talk about torque steer! Man, that was a fun car to borrow. You should find one of those! It’s too bad Saab didn’t survive.

      Turbo lag + a three speed automatic with a tall first gear makes it a slug off the line. My 1981 900 turbo had the automatic transmission go bad. My biggest regret was not replacing it with a 5 speed

    I worked at Saab ana, in Akalla.Sweden. When the absolute first, number one 900 convertible appeard, at my work. It was built in Sweden, converted to a convertible in Finland, the rear spoiler was in wood, because the tools to make the spoiler was not made yet. It was Pearl White with a black top, and a red leather interior. This car was for testning and the pressrelease. And it had the 170hp turbo intercooler 16valve. All convertibles, was after that made in Finland. All Saab produced in Finland had little better rust proofing, than the cars made in Sweden. They were wery proud to build Saab in Finland.

    Great deal, guys! To repair the steering you need a small black ring, part number 32021990. Costs $4.74 and still available.
    FYI, your passenger seat IS heated, it just works from a thermostat, not a control on the dash so you won't feel it turn on until winter, if it still works. After three decades the wires can fatigue and break, but it's easy to go in there and patch them back together.

    Had a 900s manual liftback from 89-91.
    Love that, much like Citroen, Saab couldn't care less what other carmakers did. A 6-footer can sleep under the stars in the totally flat cargo area. A Swedish outfit even made a camper that slides into the back once you remove the liftback☺.

      @@DrRock2009 Factory fresh and tuned that was the case. Give it 30 years, or in this case 35 to 40, and the freshness and accuracy can diminish. The overall script placement on the gage is odd. My light comes on at around an eighth of a tank so I estimate around two gallons. The new 9 3 Jerry used in the episode in got better gas mileage and they were on the highway, making for a thrill a New York minute coaster ride! So many quirks make old Saabs thrilling!

    @lp6wo 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    Too bad it’s an automatic. Takes a lot of the fun out of driving it. Saab and Volvo both had inter cooled turbos in the 80s and 90s that were a blast to drive. I was a big fan of the Volvo 740 intercooled turbo cause it had rwd. Turbo lag was horrible but when it kicked in was a blast. People really don’t realize how quick they were for the time. I know the 740 was quicker than the bmw 3 series cars and a few Porsche models for a few years.

      Saab reverse lockout on the manual was another quirk they missed out on..

    • @KristoferOlsson
      @KristoferOlsson 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@danh655 yep. one of the stories about that is, In cold Swedish winters you did not want to use the handbrake it was very common that the drumbrakes would freeze up. So for Saftey you should allways park with a gear in. The best gear for not rolling down the hill was the reverse. There is another story that it was somehow so nobody would steal the car like an extra stearning wheel lock. But I do not know about that. SAAB allways did what they thought was the best engineerd solution, they did not care about what customer wanted and design was allways secondary to the best engineering solution. The hood was one of thoose. That style of hood had lower chance to open when driving and casuing a crash. So SAAB made it not caring if customer wanted it, if it was practial, if it made ecomomical sense or if it would make a good looking design.

    Developed by SAAB in Trollhättan but the Cab was built by Valmet in Nystad, Finland. Valmet also produced Talbot Horizon (Plymouth in the US) and later Porsche and nowadays Mercedes A-class and GLC.
    The slant-4 was originally bought from Triumph (BL) that used it in their Dolomite and TR7
    SAAB still builds aircrafts and computers for ESA's Ariane rockets (SAAB space was sold to RUAG a few years ago)

    No phone, no infotainment, no cup holder, no OBD, not a single luxury. Like Robinson Crusoe, it's as primitive as can be! A millennial was looking at mine in the garage at work. I showed him my sat nav by pulling the vintage Pierson Map Book from the door pocket. OBD, I grabbed the torx scew driver, put it to my ear and bent down to the hood. He liked the retro clam shell styling and the script fonts and colors on the dashboard display. The car was the same age as he was. Should always own a car from the year you were born.

    Hi Guys, and thanks for the video...
    I just wanted to correct you a bit...
    Bouth front seats are heated.
    The switch controls bouth seats, but...there is a tention switch under the passenger seat.
    That switch cut off the passenger seat heating if there is no one sitting in the seat.
    At ones someone sitting in the passenger seat the heater also start in that seat.
    I think moust of this Saabs have no functioning seat heaters.
    The reason is the heating wires snap off in the seat bottoms.
    And moust of them snap of where the heater wire passing the deep seams.

    Never seen a steering wheel column play like that! The Mitsu turbo unit is smaller than the previous oil cooled Garret turbo unit so it spools up quicker...and they made the C900 between 1979 and 1993, so 14 years. Add in from the windscreen back it is basically a 99 which came out in 1967, so they made the same car for about 25 years...and everything in a Saab is functional, otherwise it wouldn’t be there....

    Lets see 1992 to 2020 is only 28 years,( bad math), but I like Saab's the older ones like this one was reliable like a tank, the ride was good, the turbo was fun to drive. I had two Saab's, drove them over 200K mills and the engines ware still strong

    I love Saab but that was dated back in 1992. The next gen after this was the sweet spot for Saabs

    • @davidbauer1485
      @davidbauer1485 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      The Fuji Heavy Industries (Subaru) four speed automatic transmission on the low pressure turbo was an improvement, but the build quality was influenced by GM. Yes, a more modern car but it lacked the character of the pure old SAABs. I owned a '99 9 3 for twenty years. Wrecked it and had it towed to my SAAB mechanic. Totaled, I then "upgraded" to a 91 white convertible sitting in his yard. Had experience with old slushbox 66 Mustang Convertible so this one was not a shock.

    The front windshield on the convertible is not as curved as the sedan and coupe. A pizza box will fit nicely on top of the dashboard of a sedan/coupe.

    Great old cars. Love old Swedish Steel. I'm more of a Volvo guy myself. Some Saabs have the key in the column. Not the center console.

    • @KristoferOlsson
      @KristoferOlsson 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      some of the rebaged Chevroelt SAABs or the Subaru rebaged saab don have it in the console. Saab 9000 was joint project with Lancia, Fiat and Alfa Romeo so I think they also had it in the column. Then if you go back on the old cars before they noticed the leg dmg in chrashes SAAB also had the key in the column. Dont remember all models but your correct.
