The golden age of St Johns College Choir under George Guest! It will never return... The pure sound of the Choir I admired so much doesn't exist any more.

Absolutely superb! Thank you for sharing! Advent gets drowned out today, Christmas jingles and Santa wherever you look. You hardly hear advent hymns anymore, even in church.
What a beautiful recording. I was in Berlin that Xmas. John Paul II was holding off the Warsaw Pact, but just barely. A memorable moment in our lives. Thank you.
I have been inspired by the balance of timing, the proper diction & overall musicality which inevitably leads to higher worship. I was blessed to hear this choir since 1968 at Johns. I was often the quest ( pun intended ) of Jamie Snead who earned a PhD from 1978 -1981. The Organ scholar was John Scott in ‘78. John would give his last great service to The Lord @ my parish St. T’s Fifth Avenue. I also have to thank Barry Rose for my participation in Lammas Records recordings & distribution in The USA.
I think this may be my "every Sunday of Advent" evening meditation... Love the whole service, but the Bach postlude is my favourite part! Thank you for sharing this treasure!!
Dr George Guest CBE was indeed a superb musician who deserved the highest honours that could be bestowed upon him. Sadly, he was never knighted and therefore may not be referred to as Sir George.
@@brianmckay1236 What a shame talented men like he aren't knighted, whilst Elton John and his highly immoral lifestyle does... Men like Guest honestly do much more than E. John for the majesty of the Crown.
Thank you very much for providing us with the stunning recordings of multiple Advent Carol Servises under George Guest. The best I have heard! Every year I return to these recordings! One question: In the service there are multiple very beautiful plain chants (for example at 10:23 and 20:09. Where are these from? Wo wrote them? I cannot find it in the description.
Saint John Fisher pray for those who listen to this recording coming from the college you co founded with Margaret Beaufort. The singers sing under your portrait high up on the ceiling.
Hail to the Lord's Anointed, great David's greater Son! Hail in the time appointed, his reign on earth begun! He comes to break oppression, to set the captive free; to take away transgression, and rule in equity. 2. He comes with succor speedy to those who suffer wrong; to help the poor and needy, and bid the weak be strong; to give them songs for sighing, their darkness turn to light, whose souls, condemned and dying, are precious in his sight. 3. He shall come down like showers upon the fruitful earth; love, joy, and hope, like flowers, spring in his path to birth. Before him on the mountains, shall peace, the herald, go, and righteousness, in fountains, from hill to valley flow. 4. To him shall prayer unceasing and daily vows ascend; his kingdom still increasing, a kingdom without end. The tide of time shall never his covenant remove; his name shall stand forever; that name to us is love.
I was privileged to be present for this service

Very devotional & respectful- my spirit/soul stood in admiration. Thank you!
I left St Johns College School in the Summer of 1981. I'd have loved to have still been there for that rendition of "Helmsley" especially.
Lovely photo in the introduction.
Beautiful combination of Advents and Christmas Carols. God bless the musicians🎄📯🎄
Utterly superb in every way. How I wish I had been there!
I am still enormously grateful 39 years later for the fact that I was there, and played a very small part in this wonderful choral service.
Toujours merveilleux ! Merci!
Pas si mal du tout, n'est-ce pas?
Magic! Such lovely, precise singing, with gorgeous tone. I always think that Advent services have much more beautiful music than Christmas, somehow!
Likewise, Epiphany music is much undervalued, and there are many beautiful hymns to be sung and enjoyed.

Dankeschön!

Hearing the Dean speak at the beginning is very soothing in a way.
HIS ACCENT IS PROBABLY PERFECTLY ENGLISH. NOT AT ALL THE KIND OF BROAD SCOTCH ACCENT THAT ONE ASSOCIATES WITH, GIVEN A SURNAME LIKE MACINTOSH.
Consummately beautiful service!
Lovely and peaceful.
Great carol and words from weeks before Christmas greetings to singers and blessings got 🎄 Ann DeakinWarwick
Completely Iconic pedigree Guest - there'll never be another !!
Magnificent! I met and studied Sir George Guest. He was an extremely unique, rare and wonderful man.

I for one will be keeping a watchful eye on the 2019 New Year's Honours list. Will Dr Stephen Cleobury CBE be knighted ?

Wow, beautiful expressive singing ❤

Unbelievable harmonisation of HELMSLEY for the final verse.
Amazing collection
Wonderful music.
Nice 👌
Could "Helmsley" be isolated as its own track for sharing on social media for Advent Sunday?
Does anyone know who reharmonised / composed the descant to Lo, He Comes with Clouds Descending that is sung here?
I imagine it was by George Guest, but am not certain.

What is the song at 36:50? I love it!

@@ArchiveofRecordedChurchMusic oh thank you. It's Lo! He Comes With Clouds Descending.
It's a great tune.
My most favourite advent hymn.
Lo, He comes with clouds descending.
Who is listening for Covid Advent?
Don't have to listen exactly on Sunday.
We are, today 8th December 2020 in Arlington, Texas USA; and loving every minute !
Beautiful service, listening on January 20, 2021. Lovely to listen to this program, even if not during Advent season.
What's the title of the organ postlude?
Bach: Wachet auf, ruft uns die Stimme (BWV 645).
@@peterdevile7581 Thank you for your quick reply!
Which bible is the reading from? ✝️🙏
I'd say it's the Authorized Version.
Hail to the Lord's Anointed,
great David's greater Son!
Hail in the time appointed,
his reign on earth begun!
He comes to break oppression,
to set the captive free;
to take away transgression,
and rule in equity.
2. He comes with succor speedy
to those who suffer wrong;
to help the poor and needy,
and bid the weak be strong;
to give them songs for sighing,
their darkness turn to light,
whose souls, condemned and dying,
are precious in his sight.
3. He shall come down like showers
upon the fruitful earth;
love, joy, and hope, like flowers,
spring in his path to birth.
Before him on the mountains,
shall peace, the herald, go,
and righteousness, in fountains,
from hill to valley flow.
4. To him shall prayer unceasing
and daily vows ascend;
his kingdom still increasing,
a kingdom without end.
The tide of time shall never
his covenant remove;
his name shall stand forever;
that name to us is love.
The postlude is While sheep safely graze.
No, it´s Wachet auf, ruft uns die Stimme BWV645. A literal translation is "Wake up, the voice is calling".
