Running My Entire Track Through the Monotron Amazing // The Best LoFi Delay Crunch For $50

  • The Korg Monotron Delay is a remarkable budget delay effect, costing only around $50 and featuring all-analog circuitry. I've been using mine for over a decade and in this video, I share my three favorite ways of using it in the studio: creating textures, using it as an external analog effect unit with a send and return setup, and using it as a master bus crunch. The Lo-Fi distortion it provides heavily resembles the sound of 4 track cassette decks and reminds me just how incredible this tool is.

    A favorite chill for me is to put some video with only speaking, through the delay and just fiddling with it. I set the speed to 75% for extra chill factor and its marvelous to knob around on.

    I love the Monotron Delay! I recommend it to anyone who loves dirt and grit, this video showcases that well. My favorite is to run 'clean' digital synths through it, especially sometime like an FM synth that doesn't have a filter. It also makes a rad sound if you happen to be recording in the moment when the batteries run out!

    The monotron was I think at the origin of the analog synths revival, after it came out more and more synth reissues were made
    It's my first analog synth :)

  • @EarJuice
    @EarJuice ปีที่แล้ว +7

    It's so good. The delay can become this infinite sound just buy turning up feedback and hitting the side of it. The noise and hiss will make it's own thing.

  • @7an7ara
    @7an7ara ปีที่แล้ว +9

    Monotron Delay was one of my first 'pieces of gear' too, very dear to my heart. Can make incredible crunchy 4/floor kicks with a ribbon swipe, the filter and infinite delay. Sample that and your track's already got rhythm and thump.

    Made a super tiny techno set-up (bit ranger , soft pop mkI , volca beat , monotron delay) using only its delay and filter , I loved how the delay was filling the blanks when the feed back was cranked up

    Man, I love the monotron delay, honestly one of my favorite analog synths. It’s hard to beat analog osc + analog delay for like $40 (idk the price these days). I just wish it wasn’t so noisy; the signal to noise ratio is terrible. I wish they made a “pro” model or something, with better components. Anyhow… I always have such a good time playing with that synth. A must have for anyone who’s into synths.

    about time someone showed the people what this thing does. super slick and gritty! have had one of these for several years and am still coaxing surprises out of it pretty regularly.
    have been wondering though, if i were to attempt to upgrade from this is it rly something like the zen delay or nothing as far as features?
    Zen delay is 10x the price, and a pricetag i have only ever spent on a full audio workstation

    I have one of these bad boys on my desk, I got it when i went to buy the pocket operator (after watching your vid!) and saw it was going for about £30 on offer, so grabbed it. Literally, the first thing you used it for is all I've been doing with it almost every day since I owned it. Work getting me down? Crunch out some feedback. Waiting for a respawn? Hit the feedback nob to full. Been on hold for the last 15 minutes? You get the picture. Love this device, though to me it's a toy, for someone who knows what they are doing with it can get some great sounds out of it - love the video man

    PT2399-based delay pedals also have a similar lofi crunch.But most modern delay pedals have moved to more modern chips, but there are still some builders making them, and there are several DIY pedal kits available based on this chip. The chip was originally for Karaoke machines, and it is somewhat obsolete but I think it sounds pretty cool.

      no not really, it just is what it is (minus mods to what is in the circuit) the low pass filter is really interesting though because the time and feed back are reactive to the change in the filter as well as vice versa with the delay shifting the filter response. its really cool
