    So stressful! I had family in Canada and used to cross the boarder in the late 70's, early 80's. This was before you needed a passport. I would stop, they would say hi and ask why I'm going to Canada and wave me on. It was so easy back then! Now it's so intimidating, I don't know if I want to go there again. I hope you get a chance to travel around Canada! It's so beautiful!

      Well, having crossed the border to see my sister in Canada every year or more during the 70's - they were pretty harsh at times and worried about Vietnam draft dodgers. Not always as it seems! Perspective. @@dianepines9014

    LOL. Dee, thank you sharing this wonderful but a teeny bit frightening episode. I was going to enter Canada from Washington state. I knew I had "stuff" in my van that were questionable. So I rented a storage near Olympia and unloaded those questionable items...all legal in the U.S. OMG! I nearly had an empty van. I'm retired military so I pack like I am still on active duty. In civilian clothes my military ID card doesn't carry much influence with these border patrols. I can almost imagine your state of mind after leaving the border crossing. Have a great stay in Canada and come back refreshed. That was such an enjoyable video.

    • @LadyBugout
      @LadyBugout  ปีที่แล้ว +6

      Thank you for being understanding. It was definitely my bad for not checking. I used to cross the border all the time (many years ago) and just didn’t even think of how much it has changed. It was so different back then.🥸

    Thank you for sharing your story - maybe this will help other travelers.
    *Always* declare what you have in your possession. If you do not declare what you have you will be arrested and prosecuted.
    Border agents have the right to completely upend your vehicle - toss all your possessions out and turn it inside out. You are very, very lucky.😅
    Also, do not speed, even the tiniest bit. In Canada your vehicle can be impounded.
    I take a copy of my child’s birth certificate, a notarized letter from his father stating we have permission to travel through Canada and what our travel window will be. Some agents will ask your child questions so we practice answering the basics like what’s your name, birthdate, who are your parents, where are you going. Border agents are screening for human trafficking.
    Cannabis and cannabis products are not allowed either, though you can purchase them legally in Canada.
    Canada updates their website with what food products are not allowed across the border, too.
    You are very lucky with your outcome. Will you please edit your video strongly encourage your viewers to *always* declare what is in your possession. I don’t want folks to be misled and have a much different outcome than yours.❤❤❤

    Well, now you have a story to tell! As an average urban Canadian, I am not driving around with weapons - which pepper spray is. Bear spray is fine by the way. When we cross into the US in our campervan, border crossing is always concerned with what's in my fridge. I've had tomatoes confiscated and eggs confiscated twice. My biggest danger to America is my eggs! LOL Welcome to Canada Dee.

She endures daily harrassment, threats of violence from her neighbors. The police do less and less. Crime happens , the Canadian police, prosecutor do nothing. It's not a blissful safe place. Canada just pretends its safer than it really is.

    Bienvenu a Canada! I've been in Newfoundland for about a month on the maiden voyage of my wee 2011 Transit Connect. I've travelled the world but this was the first time I crossed an international border in my van and I've never been so nervous. It may or may not have helped that I watched the Canadian reality show about crossing the border and how many people don't know about the restrictions. Luckily for me they pulled the 3 cars in front of me over for searches and when it was my turn to cross they asked the questions and told me to enjoy my trip. Whew! I have to tell you, Nova Scotia and Newfoundland are a van life/boondock/provincial and national park paradise. I don't want to leave.

    Good to see the Ambassador Bridge. I live in Royal Oak, MI which is about 13 miles from the Detroit River and have crossed that bridge many times. Next time you go to Canada, feel free to drop off your cache of pepper sprays and other suspicious items at my house for safekeeping. Sorry to see that you had such a difficult time at the border. I teach at Wayne State University which is about three miles from the river and sometimes after class I used to cross the bridge or tunnel to have dinner in Canada and walk along the riverfront. It was a very friendly crossing going both ways with most drivers being waved through with no problems. That ended on 9/11 and now the border crossings can be an ordeal as you discovered. Hopefully your return will be easier. Perhaps you can linger in Ontario after your workshop. Ontario has a magnificent collection of provincial parks where you can camp. I have camped in most of them and have always enjoyed my stays. You could create some great videos in Ontario. More time? Drive along the St. Lawrence Seaway through Toronto, Montreal, and Quebec City (in my opinion, the most beautiful city in North America) and enjoy the many small towns between these major cities. Beyond Quebec City, the seaway eventually flows into the Atlantic Ocean. Most of this route is very scenic. Enjoy Canada, and I hope to see at least one video from your time there.

Thankfully my medication was never found when they did their searches because I had no clue. I definitely learned my lesson though, so when I was going to canada I went through their website to find the list of things I couldnt have. I crossed the canadian border to/from alaska and the US 8x on that trip and not once was searched. We all make mistakes, you are not alone, and I am sure you will learn from this. I got stopped going through Canada security for having cheese and cookies in my purse. Back in '06 when I made my Alaska motorcycle trip I had to go to a similar room to chat with a border agent, and was also very nervous ! Kinda thought it was unfair that I couldn't have any kind of self protection device while being totally outdoors in bear country. Not even any kind of tazer device. But they get to make the rules ! As long as it is not to use against another human it is o.k. Bear Spray is good too as long as it shows it's for bears and is passed by the US EPA. They are a little more relaxed at the smaller crossings...like the two in Idaho.

  • @RicardoRoams

    I'm always amazed that people attempt to cross the border into Canada without doing their homework. First of all, besides all the normal paperwork, Passport, driver's license, proof of insurance, if you have a pet, there's paperwork with that. Leave your handgun at home. You'll be arrested if you try to bring it into Canada, even if you have a permit. Same with marijuana. Marijuana is legal in Canada, but it's illegal to bring marijuana across the border into Canada. Even if you have a medical marijuana card. Your card is not valid in Canada and you will be arrested. If you have prescription medication it's a good idea to keep them in the bottles from the drug store. Even better is to keep the paperwork that came with the medicine. For seniors that are planning an extended stay in Canada, keep in mind that Medicare is not valid outside the USA. Your supplemental insurance will probably be accepted for emergency treatment only. Extended stay is not covered. So it's a good idea to purchase International Traveler's Health Insurance if you plan to stay for several months. And you are allowed to stay in Canada for up to 183 days as a tourist.
    Pepper spray, mace, tasers and auto opening knives are illegal to bring into Canada. However, Bear Spray IS legal as long as it's clearly marked Bear Spray on the container. You are allowed to bring in any amount of money you want. But anything over $10,000 Canadian must be declared. You must declare food and there is a food limit per person. Some foods are not allowed. I think some meats and meat products are not allowed. You need to check to be sure. Some fruit is not allowed at some border crossings. I once had to throw away apples when trying to cross into British Columbia. There is a surprising amount of fruit grown in BC.
    Another suggestion. Border Security take their jobs VERY seriously. This is not the time to try out your new stand up comedy routine. Don’t get chatty with border security. Keep your answers short and to the point. Remove your sunglasses and do not video record the border encounter. If you have a DUI or some other scrape with the law within the last few years, you'll probably not be allowed into Canada. They are very strict about DUIs. Do NOT lie when trying to enter the country. They will know and it won't work well for you. And if you're refused entry at one border crossing don't drive to another crossing a hundred miles away and try to get in there. Everything is computerized and if they know at one checkpoint, they know at all.

      My husband and I are seniors who had not been across the border to Canada since 2019, before the so called pandemic. Everything is certainly different in crossing. I had several items in my purse and the car that were apparently very illegal. How naive we were. We feel like we are just crossing the street to visit our neighbors but it is their sovereign country. Now I'm almost afraid to go back. Sheesh. Same with trying to get back home. You can really get yourself in a pickle over a small stupid thing without even knowing. Makes life more difficult than it should be. Then, there's the "other" border. What a joke.

    • @RicardoRoams
      @RicardoRoams ปีที่แล้ว

      @@Galen-864 , “so called” pandemic? You don’t believe COVID was a pandemic? A lot of things have changed when it comes to crossing into Canada. When I was a kid we lived close to the border and went into Canada many times. In those days the border guard would just stick his head into the car and maybe ask a few adults where they were born. An then wave us through. For many years as an adult I didn’t need to show a passport. A lot changed after 9/11. Each country makes their own rules for entrance. I’ve gone back and forth to Canada many times at many different border crossings. I’ve had to change my preparations as times change.

I didn't think about it and got that because it was cheaper, but afterward started reading it was maybe not the best for the FTC 2010-2013. My van ran ok...maybe didn't get as good gas mileage, but I wasn't checking on this trip. Last fill-up I put in 87, but am wondering what others are using. Look forward to your retreat videos! Almost missed my flight back for work the next day going thru the security hurdles to make sure I wasn’t a terrorist😳
    Have a great, relaxing time up north. PS - love your castor oil hair tip! My hair does too - THANK YOU🥰

    Have you thought about getting a dash/rear cam package? I saw one the other day where the rear cam display clipped right over your rearview mirror and it was touch screan and had dash & cab cams that were motion activated for when parked...

      I had one for a while. It broke a while back and now I’m just used to not having one😛

    Waaaay back in the summer of 1979, when I was in college, I was traveling to Ponoka, Alberta with my older brother, younger sister, Aunt, Grandmother, and my brother's dog, Ziggy. We were in 2 cars, and were traveling from Kansas. We had a tent and camping gear and would camp some nights and stay in hotels other nights. We got to the border in Montana to cross over into Canada, and they wouldn't let us in because we didn't have the paperwork for Ziggy's rabies shot, although he did have his tags on his collar! So we drove back to Cut Bank, Montana, found a creepy motel that had one room that we all stayed in, and my brother decided he'd just camp out in the Grand Tetons and have the rest of us go on to Canada to visit our relatives. I REFUSED, found the one veterinarian that was open that day, Saturday, and we took the dog in and got his 2nd rabies shot that year, BUT we finally had the paperwork that was our golden ticket to canada!
    We had a GREAT visit, and I fell in love with beautiful Canada. I would love to live there now because it is so green, but I am stuck in the desert of Arizona for now! Maybe someday...
