The Failed Production of the Super Mario Bros. Movie (1993)

  • As we get closer to the release of the Super Mario Bros. movie in April, let's take a look back on the movie that started it all. The Super Mario Bros. film from 1993 gets a ton of flack for not sticking the landing but what happened? What did this movie end up getting right? The film would have almost looked like Mario games at that time but there were many bumps along the way.

    I always thought the Goombas in the game were the same as just the heads of the Goombas in this movie, just on top of mobilized bodies. Granted, bringing the enemies of the game to real-life would be a challenge, humanizing the characters like Toad and Big Bertha was a bad idea. When I saw this movie as a kid, I didn't really question it being that different from the source material, I was kind of used to it. Batman was a departure from the Adam West series I was familiar with, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles didn't have Rocksteady, Bebop, or Krang, and the same was true of video game adaptations of movies. And Mario Super Show had a few departures from the game as well. I just kind of accepted things will be different across different media. I know the Mario movie was quite a higher degree of different than those other adaptations, but I still didn't mind it and loved that movie, in fact, I think I love it even more today than I did when I was a kid. I do know it has problems and a troubled development, as you mentioned, but I enjoy it despite that. I especially love the dynamic between Mario and Luigi. The only thing I really didn't like as a kid was that Koopa was only a dinosaur for like two seconds before he transformed into ooze. As a kid, the one thing you always anticipated in movie adaptations was the moment the characters take shape and resemble what you know them as. Mario and Luigi had that. Koopa really didn't get that.

    • @TheMentok
      @TheMentok  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I agree with you there. Mario and Luigi I remember never questioning once when I watched this as a kid and it made things feel more familiar at the end of the day. Seeing all the potential ideas they dropped makes me wonder what movie would have been if they went with the initial scripts -- who knows maybe it would have been even worse if they didn't take this departure

    • @Charles12
      @Charles12 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@TheMentok I think it would've been worse because the game world of Mario belongs in animation and not live action, so it makes more sense to make it more of a dystopia in a different dimension than the mushroom kingdom.

    I know they had a couple of homages to Mario Kart (like the mattress chase) but it seems like such a missed opportunity there wasn’t a direct one. All of those cars on the street could have been like the ATVs Spike and Iggy were briefly in. That chase would have been a perfect set up. There was even a little question mark box on the screen of the police car for a sec!
    I noticed the writer Ed Solomon was involved to whatever extent. He’s the reason the first Men in Black is so awesome and his absence is why the sequels are so weak. It would very much surprise me if the coolest ideas in the movie weren’t his.

    The take they had that was similar to Alice in Wonderland would have worked perfectly, seeing how much of the original SMB game is inspired by that story (up to an including the mushroom that makes you grow). And Wonderland is a wicked, strange and colorful place, unlike Dinohattan, which is just a slightly darker version of the real world.
    Despite all of its issues, I still genuinely like this movie. Sure, taken as a SMB movie it's trash, but taken on its own merits it's a pretty fun post-apocalyptic story. It's kind of a miracle that's in any way coherent after so many behind-the-scenes problems, though.
    And it's driving me crazy, but I could _swear_ Mario's girlfriend was named Pauline in the movie. I guess Daniella is a similar-sounding enough name that I could be confused.

Movie (1993) was an Elseworlds story before it became a thing; it's an alternate reality; the elements from the game are there but altered to match the world. Yeah, I have higher hopes for the next Mario movie. I was pretty disappointed when I first heard Illumination was making it as they only do the bare minimum on making movies (and I always thought, even back then, Pixar or Dreamworks should be the ones to do a Mario movie). But so far the trailers look pretty promising. I just hope they don't screw this up somehow.

    in my opinion i loved the movie. to me its a classic and i remember as a kid i loved it, i still do up to this day. i remember when i got back from the theaters after watching the mario movie 2023, i got home and looked for the 1993 movie online and watched it, to see the similarities and differences. they are very different from each other with one being close to just like the game and the other almost like nothing at all, but we gotta remember nintendo gave them CREATIVE LIBERTY to do what they wanted with the movie and it became what it is, and i liked it, i also liked the daisy a lot in that movie, and also just john leguizamo as luigi was *chefs kiss* ❤️

    When this movie came out, I was adamant that my dad take me to see it. Well, it took four theaters to find one airing it and we almost went to see Groundhog Day.
    Yeah, it's bad and I kind of wish I'd seen Groundhog Day instead, in retrospect the movie is a cult classic.

    I remember being 8 years old in 1993 when this came out and watching as a kid. I remember disliking this movie as a kid because it felt like it was created by someone who knew nothing about Super Mario, perhaps glanced at the SNES instruction Manual, and was like....I got this.
