    Good job guys. I really like how you told us when you let go of the knob so we could see how the truck reacted in relation to the trailer. Hopefully I’ll be trying ours out in the next few days. We have a similar rig but only SRW and 11k 5er.

      Hey @augie Schultz! You are most welcome! We still use it all the time! You will love it. It does have its own learning curve but if you are new to backing rigs up, it will help tremendously. Stay safe and happy new year!

    Try that in a tight campground, it now becomes a hole new ballgame. All your attention is heads down looking a small screen and bad thing happen real fast. When I back my 5th wheel my head is out the windows through the hole presses. We tend to lose sight of the big picture with Technology. I’ll stick to the tried and true process of driving the truck😄
    Nice explanation of the backup assist though…..

    I have so much RV stuff in the truck I missed the cable. I went to the parts department at the dealership to purchase one. Found mine in the zip lock bag under the rear seat. I have had my F-450 for three weeks. Backing a 44 ft trailer has suuuuucked for three weeks

    Great video, guys! We are picking up our new 43’ rig with our new 2020 Ford F-350 w/Pro Trailer Backup Assist next week. I’ve been looking for a demo video going over everything, and this was exactly what I was hoping to find. It looks like you used the adhesive to mount the Sensor - will you be using screws to more permanently mount the Sensor? Now that you’ve been using it for a while, do you have any additional thoughts for newbies using the system? Do you use your rear-most camera mounted on the back of your rig now, as opposed to the cameras you were using in the video? Thanks!

    • @WeLiveFreeRV
      @WeLiveFreeRV  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Hey Steve! First congratulations!!!
      1)We still use the adhesive mount, we did switch our pin box to a gen x executive gooseneck hitch ( great investment) this forced us to remove the original adhesive and replace it. We replaced the adhesive with 2 sided gorilla tape and it’s doing great! We’ve had our rig in below freezing temps and over 100 degrees and have not had any problems with the adhesive.
      2) Advice:
      A) find a large parking lot and practice with the backup assist. We ran through various scenarios including backing up a road (made with cones in parking lot including curves), backing into an angled spot, a spot that requires a 90 degree turn.
      B) make sure anyone who helps tow normally knows how to use it as well.
      C) when backing up always use a “ground guide” also on this note. Make sure the driver and ground guide use common language. For example when we back up our rig when we use directions (go right / go left) we are always referring the direction we want the tail end of the trailer to go. This works very well with the backup assist. ***we are working on a video for this ;) ***
      D) if communication is ever unclear stop and link up with your ground guide to discuss what needs to occur ( this helps with establishing common language) take the extra 1-2 minutes and save yourself heartache and money.
      E) Also we always operate that if the driver can’t see the ground guide than the truck and rig don’t move until the ground guide is back in view.
      3) camera system: yes we did buy a wireless camera system. It’s was not a name brand system but it works great for us! It was the FHD wireless system. FHD 1080P Digital Wireless 2... www.amazon.com/dp/B07FM58K2W?ref=ppx_pop_mob_ap_share
      This camera has its own monitor which allows us to use the Ford camera system and the backup camera system.
      We hope this helps! Don’t hesitate to reach out if you have any other questions! Be safe, happy travels, and happy new year!!!

      We Live Free RV - Thank you for the fast reply!
      We also swapped out the MORRyde Pin Box for a Gen-Y Executive 5th Wheel Pin Box because of concerns about clearance since we have an Access Tonneau Cover which adds to the rail height and also narrows the width of the bed opening. I spoke with Jason @ Gen-Y about mounting the Sensor, and he said it would be ok to use 2 screws into the Gen-Y metal, but I’m inclined to see how secure the adhesive is first, so your comments about heat and cold are reassuring.
      Looking forward to trying to find a good practice area, but weather will be our challenge after picking the rig up. Since there were delays, both at the factory and after the rig was delivered to the dealership, we are now needing to move the rig from MO to MN in January winter weather. We’re keeping a close eye on the snow forecasts. We basically just need to get the rig back to MN and backed into the indoor storage spot we have rented. (That is making me nervous...!)
      I do think we’ll be using both the Ford cameras and the system installed on the rig. Did the Pro Trailer Backup Assist package come with a Ford-supplied rear camera? And if so, it sounds like you didn’t elect to use it.

    • @WeLiveFreeRV
      @WeLiveFreeRV  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hey Steve!
      Our truck did not come with the Ford camera you attach to the trailer, but it might be something you can get your dealer to add in with your purchase! It was an option for us to buy, but we ultimately went with a camera to mount to the furrion bracket.
      One thing that always helps us Is to do an aerial survey of where we plan on stopping. We talk through the turns we will make and any concerns we think we might encounter. We have parked in some interesting places and have had to really take our time backing in. We just stop and the ground guide checks the clearance on both sides and the top before we move again.
      Be safe while traveling in the snow! The plus side is that by the time you tow to the storage location you will be infinitely more comfortable with it! Remember to go slow and if you are ever in doubt stop!
      Great call on the gen y hitch. If you haven’t used one before you will absolutely love it! It’s a great upgrade. The next upgrade we’d suggest is air bags for the truck! We have traveled some unique roads in Louisiana and Texas, and the combination of gen y hitch and airbags definitely helped!
      Oh and don’t forget to rinse the salt /brine off your rig prior to storage (weather permitting)
      Very respectfully,
      Jeff and Amanda

      We Live Free RV Again, thanks for the reply and the great tips! We became aware of the Gen-Y pin box from another TH-cam channel where they had issues with their rig’s stock MORRyde pin box not working with their Ford (they also have a tonneau cover setup, although different from ours).
      We follow several channels, and another one recently went over modifications they made to their Ford’s settings using the Forscan device to modify things like the ‘dings’ that chime every time you turn on the truck, etc. Here’s that link: keepyourdaydream.us10.list-manage.com/track/click?u=21e50869187207bbbb3a536ab&id=25117c8f2b&e=7f8a73e5ea. Also, in that video, there is a segment on beefing up the security of the inside of the cab of the truck - we decided to purchase this based on seeing the video (it’s scheduled to arrive today!): www.consolevault.com/ford-f350-super-duty-captain-chairs-full-floor-console-2017.html

      Glad I saw this video. I have a 2020 450 with the backup assist and haven’t used it yet . I also have the GenY gooseneck hitch which is wonderful and added airbags. The airbags also make a difference on those expansion joints . What’s your 5thwheel weight ? I have a 40’ New Horizons and the 40’ is interior measurement, so probably closer to 42’ long . My weight the way we travel is a little over 23k

    Great looking truck and rig! I've noticed you have the rotoflex pin and use the awesome Anderson Ultimate Hitch. Did Anderson let you know about the lockout kit for the Rotoflex pin? It is used to keep the pin from moving up and down and damaging the rubber pad.

      Hey Tony! You are absolutely right! Haha! I have been backing trailers my entire life and switching from "the big wheel" to the "tiny knob" threw me for a bit. I have definitely learned more and gotten better as we have used it. It was Amanda's first time ever backing ANY trailer. It was definitely an easier learning curve for her. For me it was opposite of what I am traditionally used to doing.
