I’ve been running this one in the NMO configuration for about 10 years now. It’s by far, hands down one of the best if not the best mobile antennas you can get for your vehicle. I’m a FT Paramedic and have been doing SAR for almost as long (15 years) and we use this Comet on all of our trucks and mobile command unit. That’s how I got introduced to it and put one on my POV. I don’t think I’ll ever use anything else. I finally replaced it with another one earlier this year after all the years of service. I’m sure it would have given me 10+ more years but it was starting to show its age appearance wise. Other than that… solid solid solid.
Comet also makes an optional spring for this antenna. CA-SPR. If you were to hit any low-hanging branches or forget about lowering before pulling into the garage the spring will save the antenna from breaking.
I have 3 of them. Being a captain on the water it allows me to transmit Ham and VHF marine on one antenna from the mobile. I have also used it when working construction zones in roadways. They fit great for me, jack of all trades, master of none.
@@hamradiotube Well, I do not have one on the boat, they are on my trucks, so I can communicate with other captains on the water. But, as you know, we spread heavy road salt all winter so they get a huge amount of road spray. I have had one on a pickup for 6 years. I do wish I had installed the spring option on that one. Its high on a headboard and I have smacked it hard on limbs. I use them from 144 to past 157 with good results.
First and only VHF/UHF mobile antenna on my 1999 Suburban. I bought the NMO version and routed the coax down the A-pillar. I like that the antenna folds down flat when necessary (parking garages). The optional spring is handy if you are ever off road and might encounter occasional branches across the trail but want to leave the antenna up instead of folding it down. I bought mine from The Antenna Farm and the first one was damaged by the shipper and Antenna Farm sent me a replacement. I found out that parts are available from Comet at reasonable prices if you ever need to repair or replace any of antenna components.
Mike, Fantastic antenna. Bought one from GigaParts a year ago intending to put it on my mobile. I live in a super hilly area and even though I'm 15 miles from a repeater, I have to do the spaz dance inside my house to find a spot for my HT to hit it. Just for S&G's I got a couple pieces of 10" angle iron and sandwiched the CA-2x4SR mount between them and put it up in the 1st floor of my house in a room with zero reception. SWR 1:1.05 2cm and 1:08 on 440. THEN I got the bright idea to add a couple 19"radials to the angle iron since I'm on 2cm most of the time. POW! I hit everything rock solid with 5W inside my house. Couldn't be happier but now I need one for my mobile (hi-hi) and I need to pop this puppy up on a pole outside. Thanks for another great video.
A lot of the Sky Warn guys in my area love the base and mobile Comet antennas. They must be really good and I'm impressed with your video showing your new comet antenna hit a repeater your other antenna couldn't.
Hey thanks Don. You'll like it even more when I tell you I had to do the entire thing twice. I forgot to turn my mic on and didn't realize it until the end. Took everything out, put the old antenna back on, and did it all over again. It's ok. All we can do is laugh it off.
I have the CA 2X4 SR in the NMO mount. It sits in a Comet mag base in the middle of the roof of my Tacoma. I did add the optional spring to it. That spring has saved me a couple times driving under brush. The antenna works great on 2 meters and 70 centimeters, SWR runs 1.2 to 1.5 for me across both bands. Propagation seems good. I get good signal reports on it.
Nice antenna. I have the comet SBB-5NMO which is almost the same size and db gain and it works amazing. Same mount also but the NMO version. I've driven 120kph into 40kph cross winds on the highway and other than the antenna bending temporarily, it all held up great.

I need a VHF/UHF antenna for my Jeep. Your evaluation (and the confirmation of quality by others in the comments whose opinion I respect) have put this at the top of my list. Thanks
@45 Auto, it does require a decent ground plane. If you are planning to mount on the jeep in a location where the ground plane is marginal, consider a half-wave design that doesn't require much of a ground. But if you're sticking it to a bumper, metal hood, or tire rack, go for it!

Great video. I have this antenna but having issues with it tuning in the repeater input frequencies on GMRS. How did you get the StikPro to go to large numbers? It’s certainly would be a lot quicker than just using the +/- buttons.
those back seats come off relatively easy. you could have " yanked " up on the seat bottom, and it will come off. you could have put all your excess coax under the seat. just food for thought.
Do you find that the coil of coax in the trunk has changed the performance on the antenna? Clean looking install, always fun to get new stuff! Edit: I asked the question before the analyzer portion of the video, looks like you don't see any negative impact.
jsyk, your 5% off code didn't work for me, no biggie $ wise, but since I learned of this set-up thru your video, I thought I'd order with your code. Anyway, parts ordered, looking forward to their arrival!

@@hamradiotube I wished I had given you a heads up, I just thought you would know about it, a good friend wanted to go so I rode with him. One of the best Skywarn short classes I attended over the past 40+ years. 73. KV5P
How wide is the mount? I am looking at the Diamond and this mount. Both look very much the same. I have a 2020 Jeep Cherokee and want to mount on my rear hatch buy there is very limited real estate that I have to deal with. The Diamond I was told is 4" which is pretty much the longest I could install. Hoping this one might be slightly smaller. I don't want to have to step down to the smaller mount, it is not rated for an antenna in this length range. KC8LES
Thanks. I love the radio. It's not the best there is but it works fine for me 99% of the time. Every now and then something will de-sense it but that's about it. I have one in the car and one it the shack.
144 MHz to 148 MHzSo before I make this purchase of buying the Comet CA-2X4SRNMO antenna I have a question. I was informed that antennas had to be a certain length to obtain certain frequencies. I was told that 1/2 waves antennas should be between 41.5" - 44" in order to obtain frequencies of 144 MHz to 148 MHz. My plan was to purchase the Comet CA-2X4SRNMO antenna however that antenna is only 40". Does this mean this antenna will not be able to obtain 144 MHz to 148 MHz frequencies?
Would you recommend that TYT Quad Band radio for a relatively new ham? I bought my first handheld radio (Quansheng UV-K6) however I have trouble talking to repeaters probably due to 5watt limit. I am considering that TYT as my next upgrade.
They're not bad radios until they break for no reason whatsoever. My 3rd one is finally dying and I almost never talk on VHF/UHF. It just sits in the shack monitoring and I've lost the audio on the left side.
Does closing/opening the trunk pinch or effect the coax. I run my mag mount through the door seal sometimes when in the wife's car but was worried the pinch would hurt the coax. I found Diamond MGC50 is made for this but at what cost of Insertion Loss (not the cost of the item which is steep)? Also Mike if you pickup on this comment, how has that antenna been doing for you. I bought the Comet 2M/220/70cm version, so I hope yours is doing well.
Not if you're careful. I used to run a VHF antenna's coax through the door and after a while of opening/closing it did start to come apart. I don't have any expectations of portable mounts lasting more than a few years with regular wear and tear. I'm not familiar with the MGC50 but I am a big fan of the Diamond K400 that is holding my Little Tarheel antenna. Insertion loss shouldn't be an issue really though. The Comet mount I'm not too crazy about but I still absolutely love this antenna. The mount is already rusting and it's been on less than a year.
Hi, can I ask, can this aerial be used by an unscrupulous person to listen in to neighbours phone calls or ambient noise in their neighbours homes if it's mounted to their car in a driveway? Thanks in advance.
@@hamradiotube lol it's my neighbour who has the aerial! You really think i'd be asking for myself? I wanted to find out what he's using it for! Good lord, thanks anyway, i'll ask elsewhere.
Can I do this same installation with the same antenna and mount that you have in this video with a HT? Meaning, can I just do the same installation you just did and connect the coax to my HT.
Nice video, well done! I had just purchased the exact same mount and antenna and was looking for a bit more info than Comet provided when I came across your video - was funny you bought the exact same items as I did! 73! W7PMR
im planning to change a similar mobile antenna that i have home, its for my UVK5, but im planning to search for a better (hand) radio and antenna. It might be good for a base antenna? ;) Sadly, im not living in a single house, so i have no chance to install a normal antenna on the actualy roof, so window is the only option :)
I would start by making sure the screws on the K400 have dug into the paint and are making a good electrical contact with the hood. As far as it not going up and down, assuming you don't have a problem with the coax, the ATAS isn't the smartest antenna in the world. Sometimes it needs to think for a good minute before it starts tuning. Hit the tune button. It may look like it's not doing anything. Just wait. It's going to take a literal minute. After that it should start tuning. I did a video on the ATAS showing this and hopefully it will solve your problem. That part starts at about the 5:40 mark. th-cam.com/video/kHd_LuPv9L0/w-d-xo.html
Is there anyway you can do an SWR sweep on the GMRS and MURS frequencies with that antenna? I need an antenna that can do 2m/70cm and GMRS, but would be fun to know if it can do MURS as well. Looks like it would handle the 151mhz part of MURS, but what about the 154 part? Id like to have 2 radios, and 1 antenna if possible.
I've had this antenna since about when it came out 7 years ago. It's great for commercial and gmrs as well. However, it is a bit weak on receive compared to longer HAM radio dual band antennas. You can also get a n optional spring for the bottom for those folks... Like me... That hit things with it. They made the spring because the antenna has next to no flexibility. Also, make sure all the hex nuts are tight. It has four sections, and it one comes loose, you'll have less antenna one time after you get off the freeway.
That is funny to me. I have same car same color but 2010. and I have that Comet antenna but the NMO mount and I have in center or trunk. behind FM antenna somewhat. great match and yes GMRS and MURS match good. 30 watt GMRS great range and shocking good range on 2 watt VHF MURS. How is the spring, the older models would always fold at high speed.
great antenna good pricing
That looks like a real nice antenna! Good performer!
I absolutely love it.
Good video Mike❗️I thought you might be at the Skywarn Class last night in Huntsvill and I would get to meet you financially but I guess you couldn’t make it. It was a rest glass and their were 41 that attended. Keep up the great videos👍 73 KV5P
Well nobody told me. I saw the Walker County Mobile Comms trailer at Huntsville State Park yesterday though so that was cool.
KC8LES
It’s 3 5/16” and yes, the Diamond is 4”
Hey Mike great video as usual 😁. How do you feel about that TYT radio? I see mixed reviews just interested in picking one up. 73
Thanks. I love the radio. It's not the best there is but it works fine for me 99% of the time. Every now and then something will de-sense it but that's about it. I have one in the car and one it the shack.
Any issues with the mount damaging the paint
How did you get that barrel off at 4:31? I can’t get one off the front for the life of me, only off the back.
thanks for the review! I'm just getting into ham radio!
Awesome. Welcome to the hobby.
Great video!! One of my friends has that antenna and really likes it.
Very cool!
@@hamradiotube That sucks to hear.Thank you for the reply. I am gonna look for something else, then.
How’s this antenna treating you these days? Still happy with it? P.S. is that your Weber grill in the background? I have two of those! Lol.
Hi, can I ask, can this aerial be used by an unscrupulous person to listen in to neighbours phone calls or ambient noise in their neighbours homes if it's mounted to their car in a driveway? Thanks in advance.
What kind of crazy shit are you planning? Go away.
@@hamradiotube lol it's my neighbour who has the aerial! You really think i'd be asking for myself? I wanted to find out what he's using it for! Good lord, thanks anyway, i'll ask elsewhere.
I have this same antenna on my FJ and I easly hit my local repeater 68 miles away.
Is there a non folding wide band version ?
Im getting one of these in a NMO Mount. Any issues going down the road at hwy speeds? Thanks
What radio are you using?
Great video man, I dig your style.
Looks like I need to get one.
Thanks for the upload mate
You should!

"Hey hon, the POTA Daddy told me too, so I must"
wink.
My favorite antenna very wide banded.
It is now my favorite antenna too.
Great antenna. I got the optional spring for it
Do you like having the spring? On my shopping list, but just don't know if it is that necessary. Thanks. 73 de ki5gx
A few people have said that. What is the benefit of the spring. I was going 100 MPH today and it handled it like a champ.
@@hamradiotube From what little I could gather it was to help with when you pulled into the garage or some other low overhang scenario.
Looks like a neat antenna Mike. I might give it a try myself.
You need one.
@@hamradiotube I went ahead and bought one. 😂
Why not put it in the center of the roof?
wow; stick pro is no joke.. 400 plus bucks!!
Can I do this same installation with the same antenna and mount that you have in this video with a HT? Meaning, can I just do the same installation you just did and connect the coax to my HT.
Yep
I have the exact same antenna on a mag mount on the roof of my truck. Its been great!!

Nice video, well done! I had just purchased the exact same mount and antenna and was looking for a bit more info than Comet provided when I came across your video - was funny you bought the exact same items as I did! 73! W7PMR
Is the Comet CA-2x4SR antenna compatible with the Browning BR-1024-NMO mount?
Only if you get the Comet CA-2x4SRNMO. The Comet CA-2x4SR has a UHF connector.
I have the NMO version. Great antenna! --de N3TS
im planning to change a similar mobile antenna that i have home, its for my UVK5, but im planning to search for a better (hand) radio and antenna. It might be good for a base antenna? ;) Sadly, im not living in a single house, so i have no chance to install a normal antenna on the actualy roof, so window is the only option :)
Go with a yagi for indoors
Installed atas. Ft891 areas won't receive or go up an down. Have you got any ideas. Mount on hood with k400 23 tacoma.
That part starts at about the 5:40 mark. th-cam.com/video/kHd_LuPv9L0/w-d-xo.html
wow what a difference!
It's pretty sweet.
If you use this to hit GMRS repeaters, the SWR will be to high.
Hey man is it okay to coil your coax that tight?
I've had this antenna since about when it came out 7 years ago. It's great for commercial and gmrs as well. However, it is a bit weak on receive compared to longer HAM radio dual band antennas. You can also get a n optional spring for the bottom for those folks... Like me... That hit things with it. They made the spring because the antenna has next to no flexibility. Also, make sure all the hex nuts are tight. It has four sections, and it one comes loose, you'll have less antenna one time after you get off the freeway.
Good Video, like the Antenna. Stay out of the Ice!
Shoot there's hardly anything here.
I put my Baofeng UV-5R on it . havening great range on a 5 watt HT. I have no outher antenna except for the FM one that came on car. 73's
Great video! Will be a great choice if I upgrade the mobile to a dual band rig. 73 de KJ5T
A great antenna, I have the same one. 73 W2DWL
Nice
Need to find one of these for 900 MHz p25 ham radio here too but nice video
That's out of my element but good luck and thanks for watching.
Nice job sir
