  • Hello Operators
    Todays video is a Ham Radio Raspberry Pi tutorial for the Icom IC-705 and eventually other radios. We will be using a new setup script call the Easy Mode setup for PAT Winlink running on a raspberry pi. This raspberry pi project will be the fastest and easiest version of PAT Winlink available, and perfect for someone just learning ham radio basics with a raspberry pi. Where traditional organisations like ARES have focused on EMCOMM (emergency communications) for disaster relief, regular people are increasing their skills and capabilities, by adopting asynchronous modes like Winlink and JS8Call, for preparedness communications. I beleive this PAT Winlink update, will both both camps.

    ATM the CIV for the ic-705 needs to mimic the ic-7300 94h, for rig control. This will change in future updates.
    it's also important to understand the 705 is quite picky about your USB cables. Make sure you use a quality USB cable. you can test a good connection for your Raspberry Pi by looking at the audio inputs and outputs icon on your top/bottom menu. You'll see a USB Codec or Input once you 705 is plugged in. if not try a new cable.

      Excellent video as always, Julian, but I get an error message on startup saying "could not initiate connection with rig on /dev/ttyACM0". My 705 is working fine with WSJT-X so I believe the USB cable and CIV settings - 94h - are correct. If you have thoughts I'd welcome them! Thanks in advance.

    I'm not a technical guru and I have nothing against the raspberry pi system, but what I'm wondering is why we're even bothering when we all got a mini computer with a built-in screen, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, battery, and charge controller system in our pockets. It's called a cell phone. It seems to me the real issue is why these great programs haven't had a baby and slapped it on the Android or ISO system. We are still patchworking things. I understand the issue is technology isn't quite there yet but I think that's something we need to be striving towards. 🤷🏻‍♂️

    • @OH8STN
      @OH8STN  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Kenneth you're preaching to the choir man. I completely agree with you! In fact I just posted an Instagram post today asking this very question. I even said ffs, I would pay a ridiculous amount of license fees if I could just have an Android version of winlink and/or JS8Call.

    • @kennethh5657
      @kennethh5657 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@OH8STN you might be on to something there. 🤔
      I'd pay $20 for a android version of js8 and Winlink and maybe they should do enterprisale license to help fund the development on platforms outside of windows. We got these great proven systems and we just need to get them merged into one suite like ham radio deluxe and transmission schemes just get uploaded to on board library. Once the base system is established, uploading different transmission algorithms should have a much lower dev cost. Like FLmsg. You just pick the mod you want and go with it. 🤷🏻‍♂️
      You could even pay a license fee to open up the mode inside of the program like a micro transaction. The old stuff is free and the new stuff gets a license fee to help the developer. 🤔

    Great seeing the 705 in action for what it does best combined with a Pi. At my QTH, will still run Winlink Express because of the availability of VARA FM stations in my area. But when running portable, PAT on the Pi is the way to go. To me, I get the best options no matter where I am at. Thanks Julian for helping make it easy ! 73 de KM6TRZ

    FWIW, I actually did manage to get the Winlink sysop software + VARA FM working on my Raspberry Pi 4B (albeit with Windows 10 for ARM installed instead of Linux)--and headless, too. I imagine one would at least be able to run Winlink Express on a similar setup. Still, I wish VARA HF/FM would get ported to Linux, even if it's binary-only or something.
    BTW, you'd definitely want to boot it off of an SSD and not an SD card if you go this route. And you'll want at least 4GB RAM on your rPi, if not 8GB. (Plus, it's Ethernet only at the moment--no built-in Wi-Fi support--so you'll need a Wi-Fi dongle or Ethernet support on your laptop/tablet.)

    • @OH8STN
      @OH8STN  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      This is definitely one option. Unfortunately the Raspberry Pi running Windows is not very stable, but you did as an option. The bigger problem is software Developers weren't thinking about mobile platforms when they started developing things like winlink express. Thanks for sharing your experience. Perhaps this is something we should do on the channel as well.

    Hi Julian. I finally was able to configure PAT on the Pi and get it to see the IC705, yesterday night I just did a quick test and it was keying the radio and transmitting. This morning it only keys the radio for a split second and then stops with out transmitting anything. I then get this error in the terminal "ALSA lib pcm.c:2565:(snd_pcm_open_noupdate) Unknown PCM ARDOP". How can I resolve this? Did you have similar issues. As always, thanks for your time.

    I cannot wait to try this once I get my Pi set up! (I forgot to get a micro HDMI adapter so I'm stuck waiting till next week :cry:). I do have one question somewhat incidental to this video. Is there a particular cable you are using to connect your LightSaver Max to the ic-705 or did you make your own? I have noticed that the ic-705 uses a 2.5mm barrel for DC in and the LightSaver uses 2.1mm for DC out. I have just settled on using an adapter to convert the 2.1mm to 2.5mm but I'd prefer a cleaner solution.

    The biggest trouble we have with Winlink on the Pi is that it doesn't have all forms! Our ARES uses the forms. I have seen some information about the forms can be put in the Pi Winlink but don't update automatically.

    • @OH8STN

Then connect with telnet to send that email out. The winlink system will send you a password when you connect to telnet a second time. Julian, do I need to load the ICOM drivers on the PI 5?

    • @OH8STN
      @OH8STN  4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Icom drivers were embedded in the kernel on previous versions. Plug it in a check. You can't damage anything

      @@OH8STN Thank you Julian, when the PI 5 gets here I will check. I use NBEMS and WINLINK for EMCOMM via a LENOVO Thinkbook so far. I enjoy your videos very much. Thanks for all you do.

    Hmmmm. No success here. Like a couple of others, I'm getting the "Initiating connection with rig...
    Could not initiate connection with rig on /dev/ttyACM0. Is it plugged in, with the correct CI-V address set?
    Hit Enter or close this terminal window." I've tried it at A4h and 94h. Also verified that FLRIG, when fired up, talks to the rig at either address. I get that it needs to be at 94h at this time, so have tried it that way multiple times but to no avail. If anyone else had this problem and figured it out, I'm all ears. In the meantime I'll keep plugging away. One other detail.... I'm using a Pi3b+.

    HELP: Whenever I click the Execute or Execute in Terminal Window the thermal window briefly flashes and then closes. No webpage is opened.

      I've never seen that error before, and not sure what you mean by thermal window Timothy. I would suggest watching the entire video step by step, then starting the process from the beginning. I'm using Raspberry Pi OS with Chromium browser. Your Raspberry Pi should also be up to date. If you're not using a Raspberry Pi or Raspberry Pi OS, I'm not sure what's going on.
