Premiering at Hollywood's iconic TCL Chinese Theatre on May 21st and streaming worldwide on Disney+ starting May 24th, the highly anticipated documentary "The Beach Boys" marks a collaborative effort between esteemed filmmakers Frank Marshall and Thom Zimny. Marshall, renowned for his five Academy Award Best Picture nominations and recipient of the esteemed Irving G. Thalberg Memorial Award honorary Oscar alongside his producer wife Kathleen Kennedy, joins forces with Zimny, celebrated for his Grammy and Emmy award-winning projects with Bruce Springsteen.
Already earning accolades from those intimately familiar with the band's journey, "The Beach Boys" captures the essence of the legendary group's evolution.
Beach Boys visionary Brian Wilson expresses his delight with the documentary's outcome, reminiscing about the camaraderie, joy, and iconic harmonies that defined their era. Wilson's reflections are echoed by fellow Beach Boy Al Jardine, whose journey with Wilson traces back to their college days, where Jardine's mother notably funded the band's inaugural recording session.
Jardine reflects on the band's intricate tapestry of experiences, marveling at the evolution of their sound and legacy over six decades-a testament to their enduring impact. As Jardine aptly notes in the California Now Podcast, there's always another layer to uncover in the band's multifaceted story.
Truly, borrowing a phrase from another iconic California band, the Grateful Dead, "what a long, strange trip it’s been" for The Beach Boys-from humble beginnings at family gatherings to dominating the charts and securing a place in the revered Rock & Roll Hall of Fame.

I was born around Pet Sounds.
These guys are like my dad’s age, a little younger.
So growing up in the late 60’s, early to mid 70’s, everything they did in the 60’s is what I went after as a guitar player.
Al Jardine and Carl Wilson had some of the coolest guitars you should still want.
Really custom Fender’s, Rickenbacker, etc..
Brian is a post of his own, more on him later, he’s incredible as a musician and writer.
I was a BEACH BOYS fan since I was a teenager. I'm 74 now
Nice to see Blondie Chaplin interviewed and involved! Such a cool, friendly guy and a phenomenal stage presence.
Sail on sailor, which he sang, is the most beautiful song of the BB!
Glad you enjoyed it!
Love Blondie. He was phenomenal performing with Brian and Al in Australia in 2016. Absolute star, and also had a great run touring with The Rolling Stones. What a career.
Where's Ricky???
@@fredgien A great Beach Boys song and a welcome member to the Beach Boys.
Love It! It is so rewarding to see The Beach Boys finally get the credit and respect they are due. Truly, they are part of American History and leave a legacy for all generations to enjoy. I could not be happier!
Not to sound like a jerk but have they really not gotten the credit and respect they deserve until now? I would argue that their legendary status was cast in stone many years ago. But anyway, it's certainly good they are honored again.
Al Jardine looks terrific
Al Jardine is a literal SAINT, the way he stayed with Brian throughout the years of turmoil with M. Love.
Its great to see David Marks !!!!!
I agree always like David to bad he didn't stay with the group the whole time glad though he rejoined
I heard the Four Seasons and the Beatles when they first came out, but when I heard the Beach Boys when they first came out... Oh, my! What a SOUND! They were so different, and their sound and harmonies so natural. They've always been my favorite group and always will be!
If the story is told through Mike Love than it’s not being told.
Wrong. He is a large part of the story and has been there since day 1. He is a constant. Even Brian left for a while.
@@davidprovan5650
Ok, let’s correct that… it’s not being told accurately.
Haven't seen the movie, all thanks to Brian, shame Carl and Dennis aren't there.
These guys really dont need to prove anything to anybody anymore. They are legendary without doubt and musically under Brian Wilson probably the only band to compete, inspire and for a time rival The Beatles. There has been many incarnations of this band but for me there was only ever one....Wilson B, Wilson C, Wilson D, Love , Jardine and Bruce Johnson. Their last piece of absolute recorded Beach Boy magic...From Here to Back Again. God bless the BBoys.😊
50 years anniversary celebration of Life in magazine has been cancelled since the pandemic started on same day away from home hathon CA USA LA on way home and the rest of
beautifully worded
If you are a Beatles fan than The Beach Boys don’t matter but over the years they closed the gap in the legacy. Brian Wilson created magic some 60 years ago that will last forever.
It's Bruce JOHNSTON and no, when he joined Brian didn't play with him so that is not a line-up that ever existed. When Brian left the road THAT was the end of the Classic Beach Boys. Forget the studio - they didn't play their instruments, aka were never a recording band. They started their career stealing a song from Chuck Berry and paying for it- Surf City and in person in real life NEVER were anything buy hateful dysfunctional jerks. Nobody likes Mike Love to this day, that's what makes this money grab doc hilarious. We were on the road with them so don't even question me either or I'll drop some more knowledge on you. Just research the hundreds of lawsuits and gun charges and assaults, cults, on and on..and well we know Dennis literally inspired Charlie M to kill innocent people so stow your BS about the Beach Boys. PIck up a book called Hollywood Eden that will explain all these SoCal spoiled Hollywood and Uni High kids from the guys that were there. If anything Jan Berry deserves the credit for the scene and sound more than any Beach boy or Wilson bro from way down dorky Hawthorne way. It's a very good quick read.
@@cuda426hemi oh dear...you're not Beach Boys fan are you... mister knowledge dropper...in fact you by your post you sound a little bitter and envious...i may be wrong.. and by the way your so called facts are incorrect...if you said you played with them or near them or maybe in the same state as them sometime somewhere it's a shame you didn't get your facts correct before launching into your rambling diatribe. Very unpleasant.😐
I really enjoyed the documentary! Great to see the The Beach Boys family all together at this event. Their music will live on and be loved forever!
Beach Boys best band of all time
Jerry Schilling in the background behind Bruce, Elvis best friend
he was Carl's manager and very good friend
The beach boys ain't the beach boys without the great "Carl Wilson"
The Stones are not Stones, without Charlie Watts, and Brian Jones.
They ain't the Beach Boys without Dennis.
So looking forward to the mov. If you're feeling down, the Beach Boys' music will lift your spirits. If you're feeling good, the music will make you feel even netter. (And there's such a yreat catalog to choose from).
Their music has transformed my life in ways I don't even know. Their music is forever.
I just hit 75 . For me, before the Beatles there was the BB. Growing up I loved so many bands like The Who, Byrds and countless others but at the core it was always the BB. Those melodies, harmonies and Mike's wonderful lyrics. I can't wait to see the movie !!
The Wilson music legacy, what was in their blood, is rarely if ever, referenced. Their grandparents left Missouri for CA during the dust bowl and lived off the land, like gypsy minstrels, singing by the campfire. Much like Glen Campbell…from very rough western expansion. Song and celebration of life deeply rooted into their DNA. Just listen to Rio Grande off Brian’s Imagination album. It’s EPIC.
"Rio Grande" is not on "Imagination", it's on Brian's debut album from 1988.
I stand corrected…well almost…Rio Grande was released in 1987.
1:18 Wendy is so flawless. 😍
Agreed! Beautiful. ❤
It sucks that Carl and Dennis can’t be there.
I’m gonna buy the best Rickenbacker 360/12CW I can find, they made some flamey ones.
It’s an incredible instrument and John Hall the owner of Rickenbacker got it 110% right.
Looks like a fantastic documentary on truly America's band. A band that brought such beautiful music to the world. Can't wait to see it. Surf's Up ~~~
2001 before New Year's instead inside of interview review history books documentary about biography book club in movie part in class of Legends
I watched it; it's very disappointing. The unseen footage is nice, but the doc has no flow
Ignore personalities...just listen to the lyrics and harmonies from over 6 decades. They are the best.
Brian Wilson > Beach Boys
thank you for this footage, it's a labour of love
You're welcome.
Beach Boys are my life. Saw you many times in Germany. Thank you for your great music....
Love him or loath him, Mike Love looks fantastic for an 83-year old man
His dad lived into his 90’s so not surprising. His voice has been shot for 50 years though
his fillers and botox have finally settled and he looks normal again!
it's a shit, Beach Boys are Wilson.
@@pauldrew3696😆 true but still love him.
It took forever but finally the Beach Boys are treated like they should be. They were always as good or better than the Beatles.
They were not as contemporary and their lyrics at times were weak but the way the music was produced was and is something unique and special. 40 years later I would rather hear a Beach Boys song than the Beatles music. They definitely have caught up in terms of legacy over the years.
I’m 57 now and my dream as a teen was to own a mint 57 Chevy and pulling up to my girls house with “Don’t Worry Baby” on a great sound system.
Something Jensen early 80’s..
I lived that dream my 56 Nomad 8track stereo blasting picking up my Surfer 🏄♀️ Girl and had My Surf board in the back California Dreaming was real 😊
I really hope they finally give the rickey and blondie era it’s due. I also hope they finally tell the whole story, warts and all. Every historical story thus far has been a complete whitewash.
I luv The Beach Boys ❤
this is a film for beginners, people who don't know much about the Beach Boys, not really a deep dive
Wait for part 2
Watched it last night! Highly recommend❤️
Great video of The Beach Boys. Love their music.
The only BB songs that I am not keen on are DIA, GV. Barbara Ann, BTTYS, Kokomo and Lady Lynda.
The best!
The early and mid 60's were the Brian-Wilson-era, but the best time of the BB's as a whole band were from 1967 (Smiley Smile) to In Concert (1973). All these albums show their abilities as singers, songwriters, producers and arrangers. They were a great creative force in this time. After the big success of the compilations "Endless Summer" (1974) and "Spirit Of America" (1975) they became an oldies act. There were really good songs on the following albums (I like Love You and the Light Album), but the concept became more and more nostalgic.
The best! From an old BB fan!
Already watched it twice. And will put in again and again, whenever I need more joy in my life. Thank you for this documentary. It's a gift
So sad to see Brian in a wheelchair. Once a Beachbody s fan Always a Beachbody Fan. Yes I m an OLD SURFIE love a good Wave. cheers
Good to see Marilyn!
I have a question. At the VERY beginning, Murry & Audree went to Mexico. The story goes that the Wilson's food money went for renting the instruments. Then there is Al Jardine's mother financing that too. Which version is true? Or is it all true?
The new beach boys book seems to have settled on a hybrid of these two stories. The Wilsons used their parents’ money to hire the recording gear, and then Al’s mum topped up the money to hire instruments
Just watched this with my dad and we both enjoyed it
Such a shame Brian isn't with them.
He was there, just not interviewed
Great vidio. Even greater band! Good job.
Glad you enjoyed it
Brian Wilson was the drive behind their journey
The Wonderful Beach Boys
Enjoyed the doc not sure you can cram 60 odd yrs into 2 hours though
It seems to me that Scott Totten was missing, he dedicated a lot of time...for many years to The Beach Boys. He was an excellent musical director and a genius on the guitar. Greetings ❤️. I love The Beach Boys ❤️👏👏👏👏👏
He's a supporting musician in a backup band. Yes, he's supported Mike Love's tribute band, but that does not make you a member of the core group.
Hopefully Dennis and Carl Wilson are given props and the Manson connection is brought up, as well as the Fleetwood Mac Dennis connection
So just the salacious details, screw the music right on brudder
Compared too these guys Charlie M. was a saint
Well, two out of three isn't bad.
@@davidtroy1522 Manson was pure evil
Nothing new. Aimed at non-fans. As said in the video clip, ".. people getting introduced to Beach Boys music." Barely touches the depths of what the Beach Boys accomplished.
Wait for part 2
@@timcahill605 - There’s more be more of this?!? More celebrities of the moment getting more FaceTime. I need the directors cut with another 10 minutes of outtakes!
its a shame that all these music documentaries are on Disney, i won't watch them
Hopefully not too many negative things about Dennis. He’s the surfer in the group & had an impact on the band. Let him rest in peace & forgive him for his bad dec
Al wasn't present at Paradised Cove. It does NOT tell the whole story.
Great band for so many years! Thank you for all the joy you gave us…..
Love ❤️ their music 🎶
Good stuff can’t wait to see eit
Im glad Brian Wilson is still alive to see this movie and was able to be there doing the premier because if nobody doesnt know any better they probably think Brian is the oldest member. Mike Love is actually a year older than Brian and boy seeing Brian in a wheel chair breaks my heart.
So good! Loved all the old photos, videos and old videos. The interviews were excellent as well. Learning that there we’re basically two Beach Boy bands was so interesting. I think Ryan Tedder made the most amazing statement about Bryan Wilson and the original members. The touring band could recreate what the studio band created under Brian’s talent. As much as The Beatles albums were good they couldn’t recreate their music live. That says, a lot about all the talent involved with The Beach Boys. Congratulations to a wonderful tribute documentary from a South Bay local.
Even though we're blessed to still have Brian with us, it's heartbreaking to see him like this.
Watched this a couple days ago on Disney +. It was phenomenal and watched it again the following day! Big huge fan of The Beach Boys! Well done documentary ❤️👍❤️ way to go! Love you guys!
No #1 guy Brian Wilson?
Definitely #1
He was there. He was not interviewed and he didn't appear on the red carpet. He is introduced in this clip.
Sadly looks like he's suffering from dementia.
Mike Love certified musical genius. The formulas, oh man 🙏🏻
The other vocal groups of that era (The Association, The Four Seasons, the Mamas & The Papas, et al) as wonderful as they all were, were missing the dynamic of The Beach Boys' harmonies because the Wilsons (+Jardine+Love) had genetics going for them: The voices blended like no other because they were brothers/family.
Listen to the first ten seconds of Don't Worry Baby, and their unique familial conjunction is unmistakable -- no studio technology in the world can generate that cohesion if it isn't there at the core
Yes, it's in their special vocal blend. It sounds like no other.
9:45 Stamos' beach boys movie is also very good. He's also drummed with them live full shows.
Great to see Blondie Chaplin his contributions to the Band in the Seventies adding a needed edge. Thanks Carl for inviting him in. 🎵
Sei e rimarrai un Genio
Caro Brian
Little mentioned fact, but in the 60's there was an East Coast Exodus of young men and women after hearing the Beach Boys singing California songs about the lifestyle in the sunshine. My brother and 6 of his friends left upstate NY in a car and headed to California and once they let everyone know they made it another wave of young people headed out. That was one small town and I'm told that wanton fever spread throughout the East Coast. Their music started a cultural revolution.
Love Stamos, always cheesed up 😂 "snowing at the beach"
I would liked to have known who each of these people were. Nice video.
I need to get the Disney Subscription back! Thanks for this video!
excellent film
May God bless them!
Al Jardine. The looks and wisdom of Yoda
Is it on Disney+ only?
I think so.
Brian Wilson has no idea where he is and Mike Love and Al Jardine hate each other. I guess I'll just listen to the music and forget the modern day corporate bullshit. Fuck Disney.
You're not missing anything. It's a very basic documentary aimed at non-fans.
Which is the one who had a daughter but he never acknowledged her.
Stamos in NOT a Beach Boy. He's done a few gigs with them but so have a dozen other people who go unmentioned here. If anyone deserved honorable mention it would be Jeffrey Foskett (RIP) who was a Beach Boy for decades as well as Brian's right hand man throughout his solo career ....
Very well said!, Jeff's contribution to this band and Brian in particular deserves some sort of recognition.
Poor old Brian. Not looking good these days.
Any chance
Any chance coming to the big screen
Streaming platforms from the info we got.
I wish this wasn’t just on Disney+ so I could watch it but oh well I’m not gonna pay for another app
Is the narration a real person or text-to-speech?
No Wilson no beach boys
Grab me a poster
Where is Brian ???
Where's Brian?
Mike love boooooooooooooooo
Brian?
California and the Beach boys personifying it or a joke. I've been to California. Well out there with the mindset that this is what California is all about after listening to the Beach boys for 20 plus years and that's not what California is about California is a very liberal mindset with a lot of homelessness, very very dirty towns, and a broken infrastructure. I went out there with this dream of this is the Beach boys saying about and it was nothing like that. The Beach boys era of California died in the summer of love. It became overtaken with drugs and access. It was a big disappointment to visit California with a Beach boys mindset.
What the Hell is John Stamos doin there!!!!
Well, he did play drums for them at one time
No way is he the equal of Brian.
Where is ricky fataar???
Grew up as a kid in the early 60s, wanting to go to California because of The Beach Boys. However, California is nothing like it was.
And besides New York, it is one of the worst states in the divided Union we live in.
America's Band
Mike love is desperate for recognition
Oh give it a rest. They all deserve recognition.
Great to see Brian Wilson there but it saddens me to see him in a wheelchair.......
Is Brian in no condition to be interviewed?
Mike Love’s Beach Boys tribute band! Lame.
Agreed. I have never gotten a chance to see the real Beach Boys in concert. I would love it if they did just ONE MORE blowout show with EVERYONE. Brian, Bruce, Al, Rickey, Blondie, David and Mike.
I have no interest in seeing Mike’s pathetic cover band.
@@lowenbad I had almost-front-row seats to several Mike Love Tribute Band performances, bringing never-used beach balls on which I’d written *THANK BRIAN!* in thick black Sharpie. Over the evening, I inflated each and set ‘em flying. Several landed at Mike’s feet. He read the message, and glared at me. At a 2012 meet ‘n greet, Mike said to me repeatedly, “I know you. *How do I know you?!?”* He probably thought we had a long-ago one-night stand. Just no.
America's band ? what about the fans of the rest of the world?I don't suppose the BB care about the rest of us then!!
The present beach boys ain't the real beach boys, they are just a tribute band
Have mercy! It's John Stamos!
Mike Love is A bit of a prick but for 83 he looks great
Stole the band from brian 🙄
The band was better with John Cowsill.
Brian Wilson didn't like his cousin, Mike Love.
