Saw this three times at Wyndham’s and was lucky enough to spend time with Jeremy in his dressing room after one performance, chaperoned by the stage manager, Phil Gault. Jeremy was extremely kind to a star struck 14 year old! ❤️

I met both Brett and Hardwicke after the show - photos and autographs too! I gave a little something to them both, and I later recd thank you letters from them! Then, when Jeremy was touring for PBS in St. Louis I met him again! I treasure these memories.

Thanks for posting. Just like you I saw the show in February 1989. I still have my program and ticket - £5.50! And like others here, I met Edward and Jeremy at the stage door. They were gracious and kind to another star struck 14 year old. Lovely to know others had the same experience.

I unfortunately was never able to see the play, however there is no actor I hold in higher regard then Jeremy Brett. His characters never faltered he could be on screen for 30 seconds, or steal a scene with only the expression on his face. A true master of his craft. And for me, no one else could ever better embody Sherlock. I think Doyle would agree.

Hi David, I am one of Jeremy Paul's 4 surviving daughters - and just stumbled across your video whilst looking to see what there was of the show on TH-cam to share with a friend. I liked your account - it was very honest and respectful! I remember the collaboration between my dad, Jeremy and Edward during this time very well - it was an exciting time for them all and they loved developing the play into what it became. I was about 17 at time, and remember happy afternoons with Jeremy (my dad) and Jeremy (Brett), excitedly discussing it in my dad's study!

Warmhearted regards from Vienna! Thanks for your video. It has a great content, is very interesting and is very well done. Unfortunately I saw Mr.Brett never in person. What a pity that he died in such a young age. In my opinion he IS the ultimate Holmes.

Thank you so much for posting this. I was lucky enough to see it in London in 1988. It’s amazing how you can forget so much, then with your short, audio clips, so much comes flooding back
Thank you, thank you, thank you!

Thank you for this faithful video. I particularly like how you point out that fans of the series were happy to bask in the presence of their old friends and to revel in seeing them in the flesh. That is what I remember more than the details of the play itself.
I was one of the lucky ones to see it in 1989 in London, twice in April and once in May. I was 33 at the time and from the US, and I'd never been to "big time" theater before. It was amazing to me that one could wait at the stage door for the actors to come out after the performance. And that they would pause a moment for autographs and photos and some kind words with the fans.
Only a few of us would be there as I recall, not the mob scene I expected.
Your photo showing Jeremy signing with his left hand dovetails with one of my fondest recalls. He signed for me, and I said something like "I knew you were left-handed". He smiled and said jokingly that he had been "miscast". I came back with an enthusiastic denial of his being miscast, and he laughed. He was kind and genial, and that voice was as sharp and clear off stage as on. He gave off a lot of energy.
I was also impressed with Edward Hardwicke. He was relaxed and seemed so kind and warm. He was soft-spoken, and he signed my program and posed for a photo with me. I remember thinking he was the epitome of what I thought an English gentleman to be. I continue to hold that impression to this day. Dear man.
I do remember some differences in the performances of Mr Brett. Two were similar and consistent; one, and I think it was the one in May, was more flamboyant. I've later learned that actors will vary the energy levels to keep things fresh and interesting for them. But with Jeremy, we are left to wonder if that might have been due in part to his illness. Whatever the case, it was an amazing experience that only increased my admiration of these two fine actors. I know how fortunate I was to be there.

Hi David, I went to see this play I think it was about 1990 in Guildford I do still have my programme and a flyer like yours. I am a Sherlock Holmes buff and a lot of the lines were from the Canon it was wonderful to see Jeremy especially on stage a real out of body experience for me I was I admit a bit disappointed by the ending of the play but what did that matter I remember Jeremy blow a kiss to the audience at the end. Simply wonderful God Bless them 🎭

Thank you for a priceless first hand account of something I would have moved heaven and earth to have seen, but simply no longer exists, except the one example you cite. (Never filmed? What were they thinking?!) I believe we are similar in age, you and I, so the possibility that I could have seen it here in the states, had i known about it, is simply regrettable. I only came to know about this wonderful series and troupe at the end of last year. Can you believe it? I always wanted to be Sherlock Holmes. Odd. I must have been busy being who I was at 20 something.
Again, thank you for your views, they mean so much to me.

Thanks so much for posting this. I, too saw this play in London and met Jeremy Brett & Edward Hardwicke after their wonderful performance. I remember having heard of some of Jeremy's health issues at the time and was concerned for him. He was marvelous, but I think I held my breath throughout the entire performance.

I saw this in London and enjoyed it very much. The sequence with the waterfall was particularly impressive. I remember a moment of it being shown on the local news, so at least a tiny part was filmed.

@AMT Thanks, I was a bit older than that, but I have aged well. I think it was the south east news which used to be shown after the main news. It really was no more than a couple of minutes taken from the side of the stage. I am more interested in finding tbe missing bee keeper scenes from The Second Stain or the in house bank advert they did.

      @@culturewarp it's a good concept.
There is a book called Sherlock Holmes my life and crimes. In it Holmes helps Moriarty fake his death. Then the 2 become secret agents in Germany at the behest of Mycroft. That is the best version imo.
