Ah man The Third Man probably on my top 5 best films of all time list. Funny story actually about this film. My dad and I watched the film together and the next morning he went to Starbucks for some coffee and spotted a WW2 vet in line. He went up to him and thanked him for his service and they got pretty chatty. The guy started talking about where he was deployed and all and he said he was stationed in Vienna during and after the war. When my dad told him about the film we watched and he just looked up at my dad and said he was actually Orson Welles driver during the making of this film. He also drove other actors like Joseph Cotten from the airport. Crazy story

I had a similar experience with a film. I watched Ford v Ferrari with my mom in theaters. We went to a car mechanic shop, nothing special. We went in to go pay and my mom brought up a conversation about the film Ford v. Ferrari. The gentleman who was fixing our car brought up that the owner knew Ken Miles and worked for Carroll Shelby. He had competed as a racer before joining the Ford team. During the Ford races, he would babysit Shelby’s kids. He also went as far as saying that Lee Iacocca (Jon Bernthal’s character) was stealing money from Ford and that he had mafia connections.

For me, this opening was one of the biggest cinematic suprises of all time. All I knew about this film was that it's a dark film noir with Orson Welles.
But as soon as I heard this music, I was speechless. It wad nothing I had expected. And then the movie surpassed all of my expectations.

It was a shocking soundtrack for the style of film, but I think that's what makes it so great. It set it apart from other films of the era. I think it would've still been a great film with a typical noir soundtrack, but this soundtrack is a major character in its own right.

During WW2, Graham Greene & Kim Philby worked together for MI6. The name "Harry Lime" is an amalgamation of their names: "Harry" is Harold A. R. Philby while "Lime" is Greene. The real black market activity in post-WW2 Vienna was espionage.

In the '70's BBC 2 had something called The Midnight Movie on Saturdays late in the evening into Sunday morning. This is where I first became aquainted with The Third Man. The opening sequence got me hooked almost immediately with the titles over the moving zither strings and that incredible sound of the zither. I know of no other film where every part fits together to make the whole so perfectly. The sound track is perfection itself, and the film would not be the same without it. I have watched the film several times since then, and undoubtably will watch it again.

Well i am glad The Third Man film's director Carol Reed and the production company resisted a lot of changes to the casting including James Stewart bby David O.Selznick's insistence instead of Joseph Cotten. Good actor Mr Stewart is Mr Cotten was ideal for the character of Holly Martins (novella) but Mr Cotten had the first name changed to Rollo. Mr Welles was sulking in a Vienna hotel room refusing to join the production and sweetened him with a better salary. And finally Mr Anton Karas earned a small fortune touring mainland Europe, GB and America....deservedly so.

Bigger Then Life, The Killing, North By Northwest and probably 80% of Hitchcock films. About 100 Film-Noirs. 99 River Street, All The Kings Men, Strangers On A Train, Whiplash, 2001: A Space Odyssey. Most all near or HD . Champion with Kirk Douglas and all his other greats. Can you say D.O.A. "I want to report a murder" Oh yeah (cop) who's? Mine! Ocean's Eleven 1960, The Harder They Fall, The Hitch-Hiker. Touch Of Evil and most of the rest. I Want to Live! The Postman Always Rings Twice. Just found Blackmail (1929) Hitchcock film. The 3rd Man theme just gets into your head and you will be humming it all day long. Many got an Oscar or more and The 3rd Man will always be one of the best Classics of film.

YAUUN Anton Karas composed it and played it as a no-name piece. My grandfather told me he knew it as the 'cither ballade', maybe that had been the title before it was used in the movie.
Later on it became famous as 'Harry Lime Theme' or simply 'The Third Man'.
My granddad was born in 1920, and I think he knew what he was talking about. But I have no reliable source for what I am saying. .

Thanks for the information, that certainly confirms what I've read about the piece.
It must have been amazing to hear & see Anton Karas perform his music live.

YAUUN Oh yes, I also think so. My grandpa came home from Russia in 1948 where he had been a Prisoner of War for three years. After this he was so enthusiastic about this piece of music that he listened to it almost every day, and after I had been born I had to listen to that tune any time I visited him.
To him it must have sounded like The Beatles and Rolling Stones to the following generation.
To me it is a great document of the time spirit and the tradition of my family at the same time.
And I still like it....I never get fed up with it. It is one of the rare immortal pieces of handmade music that will never die. Fascinating !

Weird though that channel+ had the rights to this like 80 years before said company was founded. And was able to print yellow on a brown/white celluloid imprint...

the music sounds as 1940/50s Euro-weird as "Contempt" (1962), Fritz Lang film starring Jack Palance and Brigette Bardot.
