Followed this video exactly. Repair shop wanted $410 to do this. Cost to me $170 and an hour work. Was correct about having to remove part of the coolant tank. Didn't have to remove completely, just the front hoses and screw. Then you can get the front bolt off. Saved me some serious cash. Kudos!
I was baffled on how to get a tool on the tensioner pulley because the space is so limited next to the wheel well. The wrench on wrench trick is great! I'll definitely keep you in mind for parts purchases to show my appreciation for your videos. I hope others do the same. Thanks!
THANK YOU GUYS. Today with the aide of your videos I successfully changed my alternator & belt. Next will be the coolant reservoir. Thanks again and I'll use ur videos for any future repairs on my Taurus.
This video really helped me out when I changed my alternator last night. One thing to note, you don't need to remove that coolant reservoir. The bolt WILL hit it, but when it gets that far, it is actually completely out of the alternator.
I just finished installing my new alternator, and this video SAVED MY LIFE!! Well, it saved me about $200 that I would have had to pay a shop to do the work. I thought the video was very well done. Luckily I did not have to remove the overflow reservoir as I just pulled the bolt out enough to remove the alternator (did not have to fully remove). It took me about 30 minutes from start to finish.
Just like a 'paint by number' exercise. Couldn't have been simpler. I had the minor interference with the degassing tank. And I ended up renting a serpentine belt removal bar. In the 07 Taurus I just couldn't get anything on it with leverage. It was super tight! I've used your videos on other projects .. trucks. And they are lifesavers. REALLY! Thanks..
thanks so much for this. just replaced my alternator on 2003 Ford Taurus by following this video. You saved me a bunch of money. That's customer service!
It has been a couple of years since I replaced an alternator. I got another car and it just figures that the alternator would decide to die and kill my battery before it crossed on. Damn it. So, I thank you so much for making this video so detailed. It really helped me a lot. Now, I don't have to pay some stranger to fondle my car's insides. Much appreciated 1A Auto!!!
Great video it was very helpful. I didn't even have to remove the Reservoir bottle, I just unbolted the screw's and the top 2 hoses and left the bottom hose in. Then just took it out a little bit( not completely) and I had enough room for the screw to come out
This video saved me a lot of time and money! The only thing that didn't work out for me was using both wrenches to loosen the pulley. I used a section of PVC pipe slipped over the wrench to get the extra leverage needed to loosen and reapply the belts. This is often referred to as a "cheater bar". A longer handled ratchet or wrench would have worked, but I had to improvise there in the gas station parking lot.
THANK YOU for providing this video. My friend and I changed out the alternator in my 2007 Ford Taurus and this video made it so easy. We were done within 30 minutes and it fired up perfectly. We haven't had a problem since.
Awesome Video - I have a 2003 Taurus and the remove and replacement went just like it did in your video except that my coolant container was not obstructing the from bolt. Thank you. Your trick using the two wrenches to depress the tentioner turned a long job into a short one. Thank you. Tom, Mechanicsville, VA
I want to thank you so much for posting these videos for this car!!! I have changed out the headlight bulb, belt tensioner and just today I did the alternator :) next will be the oil and transmission fluids. You saved me so much in labor fees that I could not afford. Thank you again!
+Diane Gannon We're glad to hear that these videos have been helping you save some cash and get the job done! thanks, this was a much more clear example of how to do this than the Haynes repair manual. Haynes didn't show or mention a lot of things and only had 2 pictures to guide me. Much higher quality here!
Great video! You give very clear, step by step directions, warn about possible issues, and have really good camera angles so people can see exactly what you're doing. Looks like a top notch mechanic to me! Maranatha
great video. just changed the alternator on my 96 taurus today. I was afraid that I was going to have to take the radiator overflow out but it was low enough to let the bolt pass over and out. you saved me a lot of money.
I want to thank you sir. Followed your instructions and I did it. I.m no mechanic by a long shot. But you are very informative. Keep up the great work. And God bless you.
Hey Mike, Thanks so much for the great video. I had to change my alternator on my 2000 Taurus and had my 14 year old son help me. I had to do this on Father's Day and it worked out great! I was glad to be able to do mechanic work with my son and it turned out to be the perfect day to do this. I had to remove the overflow bottle too, but I was lucky that I didn't have to remove the bottom hose to move it out of the way. Thanks again. Hope to see more videos by you if I need to repair my car again.
I love these 1Aauto videos! Y'all have seriously helped me so much and I'm the off chance y'all read this, I just want to say thank you for your service and please keep up the good work!
Thanks for posting this! I couldnt even point to my alternator before I saw this! Everything was spot-on, and it saved me about $150 in labor cost to do it. You guys are AWESOME!!!!

SPOT ON - THANKS! The only difference being that all I needed to do was slide the hose of off the reservoir bottle and the bolt will slide right over the bottle connection. I'm far from being a mechanic but this took around 60 minutes from start to finish.
Awesome video! I have a 2003 Taurus and the coolant tank has been modified so the long bolt comes right out without removing the tank. Very helpful video Thank You.
@huntedFX A little oil on a hot motor will definetly smoke quite a bit. You might also want to look around for a possible antifreeze leak too as that could also cause a great deal of smoke. Hope this helps you out.
There should be a wire that connects to the back of the alternator and also one that attaches to the top that has a plug on it. Hope this helps you out.
We currently do not have an auto repair video for that particular repair. If you have a Haynes or Chiltons manual, it should show you how to replace the alternator on your application.
The front long mounting bolt , extracted until it meets the coolant bottle can stay in place. just tilt the alt slightly along it's axis and the alt will come out. The spacer within the alt mtng brkt can be moved if required, generally doesnt require it. Nice video.
Perfect instructions like Keith below i just had to remove front coolant tank bolt rear one broke, tip the front the tank down and to the fender and maneuver the long bolt out. Easy and not a long job even in 32 degree weather.
hey thanks a bunch. you have helped me do a few jobs on my Fords and your videos are the best. showing the tensionor was vital. other videos didnt do that well..
thanks for the video. it was so easy after watching it. i also had the same problem with the long bolt hitting the reservoir, i just removed the nut and the bolt and didnt have to take out the reservoir i just moved it a little and got the bolt out also. thanks for the info.
Thank's for making this video.. Took off the bad alternator and put the new one on in about 15 minutes... I have subscribed to you channel... Thank's again P.S.: Just had to remove the top/front facing hose on the overflow tank to remove the long alt. bolt... Simple...
@Pablo Quiroga You should be able to remove the belt off of the alternator pulley and leave the rest of it routed over the other pulleys. There should also be a serpentine belt routing diagram in the engine bay, if you're unsure of the belt routing. Hope this helps you out.
1A Auto Parts hello my friends I like this video and help me a lot, I have some comments when I did change the alternator the bottle next side of the alternator u don't need take out. Just take the bolt out ( minute 3:18 and 3:22 )the house at 3:50 lift the bottle up and move to back and the bolt of the alternator go out ........is just observation !!thanks
I just did this and watched your video and did exactly what you did lol, for some reason my audio isn't working but when you were taking out the big bolt for the alternator i was like watch him have to take out the coolant container and i was like oh damn so i wasn't the only one haha
Thanks so much. This was so helpful. I did not have to remove the expansion tank, thank goodness. I did remove the top small hose since the bolt did contact it. After I removed that one hose, the bolt came out far enough to clear, so the alternator came out with no problem. I just left that bolt and braces hanging there until I put the new part in place. Keep up the good work.
Great video - a note - if removing and reinstalling the coolant overflow bottle be sure to fill the bottle with the proper coolant to the cold level mark and perhaps a little above it as a small amount of coolant is also lost in the hose from the radiator to the bottle.
Great video! One tip, if you remove the coolant reservoir bolt/nut; you should be able to manipulate it enough to get that pesky bolt backed out enough. Saves you from having to drain the coolant. Thanks for the video!
This video helped me...alI did for the radiator overflow container was loosend the first screw you show on the radiator overflow container & pushed it down and took it out
OMG thanks so much! On my 04 taurus the overflow bottle was shaped slightly differently on the top and gave just enough room to pull out the bolt. I couldn't figure out how to get the belt off. This solved that for me. Thanks!
That top nut is the power wire coming off the alternator. You need that wire to be in tip top shape or you could have some issues with the charging system and the car running correctly.
Just dealt with the same situation on my '03 Taurus. The battery was less than two months old, so I figured it might not be that...but, having had another alternator not charging on a former vehicle, I saw the signs, even though I was being distracted by other matters. A car will go for a bit on a battery, but either as it doesn't take a charge, or isn't being charged by the alternator, things will happen like; dash lights dimmer than normal, audio volume/reception dropping off (not so much with today's cars, but don't discount it), blower fans and wiper slow down..and if you have a high mileage vehicle, even more so. Other telltales: that battery symbol light. I've NEVER seen that light pop up when battery was dying: I saw it THIS time, though. And, the ABS symbol light started winking. Im looking to do this tomorrow. Do you need to pull the belt all the way? Can I just take the belt out of the alternator and leave there so I can remember how to put it back on? It would be nice if you could answer as soon as possible. Thank you.
it appears that when you loosened the coolant res, you can sneak that long bolt by the front of it with the hoses all connected so you dont have to worry about the fluid.
Not a replacement bolt, ran into same problem today. Really wish I had came back and watched this video RIGHT before I started so i would have been turning the belt tensioner bolt clockwise instead of trying to unscrew it and wondering why the belt wasn't getting loose! lol

Not necessarily related, but I've never seen it before. Bottom line, a new alternator was needed, and installed. Now for the other stuff: yeah, that expansion tank was a bear to get by, but I was able to tilt it enough..hope the designer/engineer at Ford who put that bolt going that way gets stranded somewhere when HIS alternator goes belly up. The long bolt is essentially a pivot, it could have gone the other way!!

You may be able to apply some of the basic steps shown in this video to your earlier-year model Taurus.
@huntedFX There could be a small oil leak somewhere around the front of the motor.

Thanks for the helpful video. After I reinstall the radiator overflow bottle, do I refill it with coolant?
It should be pretty much the same. There's usually only two-three bolts that hold most alternators in place on most vehicles.
excellent video guys, y fixed mine by following you =)
The windows not working could be a blown fuse, or a broken wire between the doors.
Great video, very helpful, thanks so much for making this!
Thank You, i just finished now now i have too charge the battery the daytime lights keeps coming off if i dont keep jumpers cable on
Im looking to do this tomorrow. Do you need to pull the belt all the way? Can I just take the belt out of the alternator and leave there so I can remember how to put it back on? It would be nice if you could answer as soon as possible. Thank you.
it appears that when you loosened the coolant res, you can sneak that long bolt by the front of it with the hoses all connected so you dont have to worry about the fluid.

saw the small nut fall while removing the bottle, and hope the dry plastic doesn't break taking it off or going back on! OLD STUFF can go so wrong!

@1aauto could that cause much smoke though? because it wasn't a smoke column or anything but it looked substantial. thanks.
Not a replacement bolt, ran into same problem today. Really wish I had came back and watched this video RIGHT before I started so i would have been turning the belt tensioner bolt clockwise instead of trying to unscrew it and wondering why the belt wasn't getting loose! lol
