they had doubles specialists but for some reason the captain bryan decided to go with 2 singles players thinking that they would surprise seasoned doubles specialists. This was an unfortunate decision.
It's cool to see the usual singles pros play doubles but it's a totally different game of tennis. A lot of amateur errors. They are just not used to this type of play its obvious.
Yeah but Thompson and Purcell are elite in doubles qualifying for the nitto atp. And Ben Shelton has pulled off big upsets when he plays doubles on the atp tour, never won one though
@@TypicallyScreamer Yeah Ben is a good doubles player, but isn't seriously committed to it nor had big results like you said. In this match, Paul was the real weakness.
@@Ascendantrocket24 yeah Paul was the issues, wouldn’t cover the middle and got a lot of shots passed by him where Shelton was visibly frustrated that Paul didn’t cover the court well so it forced him to cover a lot. But yeah I’m just confused why USA didn’t put a single doubles specialist, cause Australia literally put their best doubles team who qualified for the nitto ATP and won a slam
@@TypicallyScreamer I don't think they were confident with their doubles guys and neither was I honestly. They've struggled a lot on tour. Both are now out of the top 30. Didn't qualify for the finals. Lost last 5/6 matches. Ram has a lot of weaknesses such as his backhand, movement, and serve. Ebden has their number and it would've been a matchup Australia was well prepared for. Sure their volleys, court coverage, and shot selection would've been better, but the singles guys can potentially intimidate with their serves, returns, and big groundstrokes. So I like the idea, but not the right team and Paul maybe had an off day.
Maybe an injury, but they've really struggled in doubles recently. Lost 5 of their last 6 matches as a team. Both are outside of the top 30 now in doubles, while Thompson and Ebden were both at ATP Finals in doubles. They may have the experience, but not the weapons to threaten the Aussies. To be fair, I think they would've also lost. I like the idea of subbing them out, but Shelton/Fritz would've been better.
@Ascendantrocket24 Or Fritz/Paul as they did win Olympic bronze as a team if I recall. I know Fritz had just finished his singles but this is it for the year, go for it! Lol. But I agree, I think the Aussie dubs would have won anyway.
the captain said he wanted to surprise the aussie pair with two hard hitting singles players. As if that makes sense. Doubles is about chemistry, strategy and touch. Paul and shelton volley is not at the level needed, plus their spacing was not good, too many holes for the aussies to exploit which they did.
If Australia can win 1/2 of their singles matches in their next fixtures, they are huge favorites to win the Davis Cup with their doubles pair. On the other hand, idk why USA brought Ram and Krajicek if at least one of them is not playing this match, love Tommy Paul but he's played 9 doubles matches this year with a losing record - makes no sense to me.
Well tbf Ram and Krajicek are in stinking form right now and Taylor Fritz needs a rest after ATP finals and today's match against ADM, so Paul and Shelton were selected. Tommy Paul does not know how to move on a doubles court. He doesn't cover the middle a lot and that leads Shelton to play defensive shots.
This 100% wasn't the US team captain's doubles decision. No way in hell Bryan would have put those two out there. Something happened we don't know about. 🤦
What was Bryan (coach) thinking? How stupid to have not even one experienced doubles player on the US doubles team for this match, against an experienced gold-medal-winning Aussie doubles pair who just picked them apart. Tommy Paul shouldn't be playing doubles, period. He looked amateurish. Shelton wasn't as bad, but geez. Ram and Krajicek won silver at the Olympics, they should have been given a chance. I wonder if it's all about Tommy Paul's ego: he didn't get to play singles, so he was going to play doubles no matter what.
As a doubles specialist, you would think he would have some sense to appoint at least one doubles specialist to play this decider…clearly unsure of what he is doing…

The only way you don’t play them is if they were sick or injured…and that wasn’t the case. So you let them try and win it bc that’s what they do they play doubles.. this match was over right from the beginning
There’s a lot of attention on the US doubles decision and not the quality of the Aussie team. They deserve more credit. Any number of combos still would’ve struggled against the Aussies.
They're not just good though, Ebden ranked #6 (#1 9 months ago) won Paris doubles gold and Thomson is elite #3 at doubles and #26 in singles. No combination the US had could match this.
Huge mistake from captain Bryan, 2 good single players with no double experience together doesn’t t make it compare to a highly experienced double team ! And as a double player himself, it s quite incomprehensible !
The Aussie Doubles players (Ebden, Thompson, Purcell, Peers) are a force for sure. Tommy Paul played pretty poorly in this match and was a non-factor. Fritz would've been better.
Tommy Paul should not have been in this match. Just from these highlights, he didn't know when to poach, didn't commit to poaching when he had opportunities, and failed to put away easy volleys at the net. That 4-4 game in the 2nd set was lost by him.
USA has produced some high quality players over the years but unfortunately the coaches are extremely mediocre. There’s a reason why 65 percent of coaches worldwide come from Europe.
This is so typical. It doesn't matter where you go in the world or what sport you're watching, Australians just win everything. The crush it and I feel so much sympathy for all the other nations that try to compete against them.

Is it fair to say that Shelton single-handedly stopped the US from advancing to the next round with the way he played his single and double match? Or, the captain from putting Shelton in twice?
Doubles is about serve and volley, the issue he will run into though is his volley is not crisp enough yet. If you look at his volleys they are not clinical, he gets the ball back but in doubles it is about setting up the point and he seems to just be able to block volleys back at this stage in his career.
