In fact my lectorer Rasmus Glenthøj (search him up if youre Danish) denies that. The Danish politicians knew this could only be resolved by another conflict because of the London protocol.
No major nation (Britain, France and Russia) would like a great power in central Europe that would disturb the balance. Therefore they knew they could drag this conflict into a major war, and it would resolve itself into a Danish favor.
It was an active attempt from the Danish politicians in the Nationalliberals that ended horribly.

For starters the "Dannewerk myth" justified the policy of the NationalLiberals. Also mind that during the campaign of 1849, Denmark fought alone against Prussia and 35 other German states, but still (narrowly) came out on top. Because of basic geopolitics, Great Britain and the mighty Russian Empire were meant to intervene at the behest of Denmark, Great Britain actually coming close to such action. Denmark also had total supremacy at sea, and was in theory supposed to militarily withstand the Prussian / Austrian incursion, until a political solution could come in place, which also almost happened, until Danish premier D G Monrad took it too far and squandered any posibility of a feasible peacemaking.

As soon as professional armies became fashionable did Denmark become a backwater in power politics. During the middle ages was it truely a military powerhouse, and not just during the viking age, but also during the baltic crusades with its modern army and large country when the rest of europe was divided. Denmark also had a large population - but was hit the hardest of the black death of all the scandinavian countries because of its high population density, and the result was a shift of balance of power in scandinavia away from Denmark. During the middle ages it fielded one of the largest if not the largest navy in europe. It was also early to form a national navy - earlier than England and Sweden.
But it never really gained any remarkable land forces. As a strong continental power it was easy to come into contact with the European mercenary markets and hire germans to fight Denmarks wars and the strong Danish nobility refused to donate any of their farmers to the military for selfish economic reasons. So Denmark never managed to build any army traditions and a professional army until very lately - but by then it was already too late and Sweden had already stolen Denmarks crown jewel provinces such as Scania, Gotland, Halland and Bohuslän.

Albeit that Christian IX was vehemently anti-prussian (Himself being a Holstein prince, speaking Danish with a pronounced German accent during his entire life), he was in fact against the ratification of the November constitution of 1863, expressing unequivocally, that the only reason he would sign the treaty was because: "This had been the intend and wish of my predecessor!" - Bismarck on the other hand, urgently needed a justification for his policy on the Prussian Army Act of 1860 that nearly toppled King Wilhelm I from the throne. Therein lays the real reason for the Danish War of 1864. War against Denmark would justify military expenditure and the Prussian Army Act of 1860. For Bismarck everything went as planned succeeding the armistice of 1864. Bismarck was allowed to stay in power, King Wilhelm I suddenly became popular, and nobody in Prussia ever again questioned the Army Act of 1860.

There is an interesting follow up story to tell about the the reunification of Denmark 1920. Germany had lost WWI in 1918 and a new border had to be drawn. Instead of just the taking the disputed Schleswig back from Germany the population voted on which country they wished to belong to. Northern Schleswig returned to Denmark while Central and Southern Schleswig stayed german. The border has stayed the same since 1920 and as far as I know there has been no hostilities between local german or danish populations on either side of the border since (related to national affiliation).

I remember reading about it in school as a young boy. Pretty sure the people knew a vote was going to happen (first suggested not long after 1864), so Germans and Danes alike moved accordingly so for example Flensburg would become German and Tønder would become Danish. I think otherwise there would be some areas with almost 50/50 Danes and Germans, meaning a plebiscite wouldnt really resolve the issue long term

Schleswig wasn't ethnically German per se, because in the 17th Hundreds there was a language shift from Danish to German after German was chosen as the administrative language in the duchy. Consequently, during the 17th hundreds, the Danes in South Schleswig slowly over time began speaking German, despite being ethnically Danish.
This situation was a major trigger, as these Germanized Danes in South Schleswig felt they belonged to the German identity. However, the Danes perceived the South Schleswig people as Danes with an identity crisis, who should either move to Germany proper or stop the German 'nonsense' and revert to speaking Danish. And in an effort to make them speak Danish again, German was banned in all public affairs which just further alienated the South Schleswig people and made them double down on the german identity
It's really a complicated affair, but to say that Schleswig was ethnically German is misleading. It's more accurate to say that South Schleswig had been Germanized. (North Schleswig stayed Danish throughout)

I guess they mostly have themselves to blame... the general pattern since the 1600s was to declare war on sweden and then lose it along with lots of land. The war of 1645 was the result of many years od Denmark trying to stab Sweden in the back when it was involved in the 30 years war. In 1658 it declared war on Sweden and lost catastrophically. And neither the Scanian war or the war in 1700 were any successes either.

I think Denmark made some stupid foreign policy decisions. Christian II pissing off Swedens population so it declared independence from Denmark was unnecessarily provocative. The Danish participation in the 30 years war was poorly handled and the country lost the war. And its attempts to backstab Sweden during the 30 years war by offering to broker peace in the war (in a biased anti-swedish manner, and even secretly offer Swedens enemies to join their side in the war after the first swedish military defeat did anger Sweden a lot). This unnecessary behaviour led to Sweden unexectadly moving its troops out from Germany when the fighting there had cooled down a bit, and then sweden quickly moved its army in Germany up to invade Denmarks heartlands and dealt the country a crushing blow - and multiple provinces had to be given up to Sweden in the peace deal.
The next disaster of 1658 was even worse. It was a war Denmark started against Sweden while Sweden was busy fighting wars against Poland and Russia... and many other countries angry with Sweden also wanted to join in - Netherlands, Denmark, Brandenburg, Austria etc.
A good time to start a war with Sweden one might think. There was only one problem. And that was that the Danish army was sh*t and had been badly underfunded for a long time. While the Swedish army was considered the best in Europe at that time. So when the Swedish troops left the war in Poland and marched towards Denmark instead did things become a disaster for Denmark.
So one could on one hand just feel that they deserve what they did get.
But on the other hand it does feel sad to see a maritime empire go down so pathetically. It was once a great power. Norwegian vikings were great seafarers and explorers who found Iceland, Greenland and America. Swedish vikings were great traders who founded Ukraine and Russia. And the Danish vikings were the most succesful warriors who managed to take control of England, Northern France and northern Germany.
It was a great power during the middle ages with the most power navy in Europe and it made crusades in the Baltic. And Danish Kings ruled over the largest country in medieval Europe with their control over Denmark, Norway and Sweden/Finland. They controlled the access to the Baltic sea through the sound which was by far the most important economic zone for maritime trade for England and the Netherlands during the 1600s and 1700s - far more important than their trade in the pacific or America.
And Denmark did also have much more success as a colonial power in Africa and India than Sweden. And its east India company was also more succesful. It was a maritime power with much potential but they wasted their chances.
Which is a bit sad for a Scandinavian. Copenhagen is a beautiful city with lots of statues and old buildings. It is really a maritime capitol.

I think the natural place would be Gothenburg as it is the middle between Norway, Denmark and Sweden and have the largest harbor in Scandinavia which is used for all three countries for shipping most of their goods. Oslo is also pretty close so it could be used just as well.
In the past could one have argued Stockholm would have been the natural choice as it was in the middle of the Baltic sea surrounded by Finland, Ingria, the Baltics, Danzig, Pomerania and Sweden which all were controlled by Sweden.
However today all this is forgotten, and most Swedes today do not even realize that Sweden used to be a great naval power in the past. However to tie togheter all those areas scattered around the Baltic sea and to be able to send troops to defend them it was necessary to have a strong navy.
Denmark capitol would perhaps have been the more natural choice back in the middle ages when it was the largest and strongest country in Scandinavia.
But those days are now gone.
Personally do I not care about Stockholm. And I bet most Swedes don't as they don't live there.

Denmark always laid claims to lands down to the Elbe River and beyond, even demanding submission from the Free City of Hamburg (which usually replied that will vote on the matter, but did not actually do so 😆). The Nordic Wars (Denmark, Sweden, Norway) started the loss of Territory for Denmark. Denmark is not innocent in this, attacked Cities south of it quite often throughout the centuries, most notably in 1712-14.

Denmark is one of the largest countries on the planet. In terms of geographic size, it's bigger than Germany, Turkey, and France - combined. And if russia is super power, then Denmark is a super power as well. With its enormous soft power through Lego, Aqua and beer and the viking influence it left on England, France and Germany. It is a country that invented a national flag before anyone else did. It is also controlling the entrance to the strategically and economically important Baltic sea. The country is rich and have the happiest people on the planet.

This was a war fought mostly because radical liberal nationalists wanted a German ethnostate in Schleswig. They believed that they couldn't have a functioning society if ethnic Danes were allowed to live in the state and that the creation of an ethnostate would cause the economy and prosperity to skyrocket and crime to plummet. They also wanted all ethnic Germans to be unified under one powerful state. It was very widely and correctly predicted that this fanatical progressive ideology would evolve to have many of the characteristics that we now associate with nazism, socialism or communism and these predictions began immediately during the French revolution and continued during the American Civil War both of which saw victories of radical liberal nationalist movements over traditional, aristocratic ones.
I've recently become fascinated by this subject because just as fascism, communism, and monarchism have all failed and we're all taught how silly and racist they were, we are now witnessing the twilight of our own equally silly and racist ideology and continue, as a society, to mostly live in denial of our own corruption and inferiority as we witness its final days.

Bavaria, Saxony etc became lesser states. Axis Powers And Triple Alliance all duly came about hence WW1.

Nice video and topic, but using the german tricolore for that time period is pretty much confusing and outright misleading. This is neither the modern Federal Republic, nor the Weimar republic. The german confderation also had a flag, ould have been more appropriate to use it instead.
Like, using the modern PRC flag for the ming dynasty would also be plainly wrong. Otherwise, splendid work.
Edit: I see the tricolore is dated to 1848, so my argument here is wrong mostly. I was in the assumption, the tricolore was nothing official until the weimar republic (so not the Northern German conferdation for example). I apologize and hope you guys can still see where I was coming from.

1848 was a case of "the Deutscher Bund" is under attack and thus it would send Bundestruppen (aka "federal troops) which of course were Prussians. But those Prussians werent there as "Prussians" but as federals. So, black-red-gold is appropiate.

@@DocuAddict666 To add more info: it was also the time of the 48 national assembly. An attempt of creating a German nation. The assembly wanted to continue the war (fighting for a unified nation), but like I said the troops belonged to the king of Prussia. When the British threatend Prussia with war, the king called the army back and made peace. Which was one of the reasons the German unification in 48/49 failed: the assembly was powerless and had no executive. It was just a parliament with noone to command.
