    One of my favorite episodes! Dale “the Whale” Biederbeck is such a great villain-repugnant, able to do whatever he wants because of his money and connections (having him literally calling the shots of a Congressman is a great way to introduce him), and smart enough to be a genuinely dangerous foe. Fun Fact: “Monk” was originally devised as a take on the Sherlock Holmes stories, with Monk as Sherlock (antisocial genius), Sharona as Watson (both medical professionals), and Stottlemeyer and Disher a decomposition of Inspector Lestrade (LE-land, RAND-y). Dale is a version of Charles Augustus Milverton: both are super-wealthy blackmailers who have legions of minions, and both are personally-despised foes of the main detective. Love this show! :D

      Awesome research, I never knew any of this great information.

      In regards to Stottlemeyer and Randy being Lestrade - their names originally actually fit far better than what you have
      In the Pilot, Randy is credited as "Randy Deacon", not Disher. So you'd have:
      LEland STottlemeyer RAndy DEacon
      LESTRADE

      The director Adam Arkin played him originally because it was easy/cheap to just throw someone in a fat suit. However, Adam had left the series by the second appearance. As the show had become more popular they had money to hire an acclaimed actor such as Tim Curry. Unfortunately that back fired when Tim was not available to play him in the final appearance, as often happens when a guest star is bigger than the show & has better things to do than wait by the phone for a bit part.

    Does anyone know why Dale gets recast in every appearance he has in the series. FIrst your man here, then Tim Curry and finally... I can't remember.
    They're all good actors, performing the role very well. Though, they do play the character differently from each other notably enough that... I notice it.

      @deterlanglytone 3 ปีที่แล้ว +19

      @@davidalexander3320 The most realistic but boring explanation. Probably right though..
      ... but maybe not.
      Here's what happened. Tim Curry was jealous of your man from this video. So he conducted a plan where he used his deep and old connections to give the man a role that he would conflict with this one in the next appearance.
      Opening it up for Curry... who couldn't have forseen later on that EA would pay him stacks of fat cash to play the Russian Premier in Red Alert 3.
      Which was a scheme created by the final Dale actor, who was friends with the big wigs at EA. So they mostly wasted Curry's time...
      ... who somehow still made the role his with lines such as "I'm going to the one place where Captilism hasn't reached... SPACE!"
      And that's how it went down.

    • @Sal_Sal27
      @Sal_Sal27 3 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Probably, just to surprise the audience. If they were to show this actor's name in the beginning credits then, most likely, the viewers would know that they were about to see Dale again. For the third appearance, I'd say it'd make sense given how much of a bind Monk was in. Who better and more capable of setting Monk up?

    When they accused the guy doing the bone replacement research and he just started laughing and handed them a folder. Then he said that not only did he not have a reason to kill the guy, the guy's death literally ruined his life. Their number 1 suspect not only didn't have a motive but was probably the person who was most negatively effected by the death. Ya know...other than the guy that died of course.

      The plan was for them to look and keep looking in the wrong direction.
      Unfortunately for Dale, as you see here, Monk sees that the victim didn't grab a knife when it was right there and that the phone's antenna was down. Plus, for the doggy bag here, Monk finds out that the judge had just come in from that restaurant and was then attacked. Why would she be cooking something if she had brought home a doggy bag?
