It's hard to tell when he is pranking with the sparks, but that hotel suite only had a subpanel with no main breaker. If a dead short is big and fast enough it will trip both the branch and the main, and possibly even further up. Then he would have been forced to break into that central electrical room to hide his tracks. Or get the hotel management involved. "I dunno what happened.."

8:11 - Over here, metal flush-boxes are RARE. They were basically discontinued as standard ages ago, although, you can still use them if you want. ALL the flush-boxes in the last 30-40 years, and all new installs, use plastic ones. Mind you, grub-screw type terminals, not just 'Wrap around and screw' type flat screw connections. 240v also, and an earth line and M.E.N. connection system. Not sure if they even use M.E.N. at all in American 110v systems. Most sockets and plugs seem to be two prong, with no earth line at all. I note the SOCKETS in USA allow for an earth pin, but it seems to be very rarely used. Over here, ALL appliances and wall sockets MUST have that third earth connection UNLESS the product is 'Double-insulated' - which is indicated by a double square symbol on the product if that is the case. Very entertaining video! :)

For hotel rooms the primary things that make a room handicapped accessible are:
switches and door handles at a lower height
      wider doorways
grab bars in the tub area or a roll-in/walk-in shower
Some hotels go above and beyond and do things like no cabinet under the sink to make it easier to reach.

    • @tophatcat1173

I definitely appreciate the message at the end. That being said, the smoke detector was dated to 1984. I think maintenance at that specific location for safety equipment maybe had some issues even before the world economic slowdown impacted vacation rental markets.
To be fair, the majority of rentals I've had in Hawaii have been similar to that one. Focus on that kind of thing seems like a lower priority there compared to the mainland.

In Australia, there was a perceived danger by authorities that someone may bend a knife at sufficient angle to get the handle out of the way. Then they may get that knife and potentially slide it into live pins of a power plug while it was still plugged in, without dislodging the plug. Then they may hang onto the knife long enough to get a jolt which may cause them to suddenly pull on the knife and knock the plug out.
The authorities decided 1. Lets make all contacts more deeply recessed, so pins are not engaged if something the thickness of a knife is placed at the top of them. 2. Lets make all pins shorter for the same reason. 3. Lets make the thickness of the conducting pins significantly smaller, so plastic can surround the top of the pins where a knife may go.
So we have gone from a perceived danger of a brief shock to people modifying knives to put across live plugs, to hundreds of fires each year from buzzing plugs with insufficient contactor size or engagement.

You are drawing a great many conclusions from fairly little evidence there. There are a total of aprox 1700 electrical related fires of any cause reported to FRNSW in any given year. Given the majority of these are appliance based the assertion of hundreds due to slightly insulated pins needs some backing.

70s era construction and equipment are way more common in Hawaii then you'd first think. The old hotels don't modernize unless they have to, because literally doing any kind of renovation is insanely expensive.
I've worked on hotel HVAC when I was in Hawaii during the mid-2000s, and everything Medhi finds doesn't surprise me at all. The environment alone destroys everything on a routine basis.... humidity always between the 80s and 90s, salt in the air from the surrounding oceans, near year round heat catalysis a lot of decay processes. Anything even remotely sensitive, to environment get eaten alive. The knock on effect of this is that maintenance in construction and electrical gets incredibly expensive over time. Hawaii residents also don't make a lot of money, but have insane cost of living.... so you get a very frugal mind set when it comes to maintenance costs. Property owners are even worse, and its not uncommon to see much worse electrical problems in $1000/mo studio/1Bed apartments.
But the Hotels..... its insane the degree of variance in maintenance quality on the GUEST FACING side of the campus; especially for the prices. The worker side.... borderline horror stories at times..... at the 4-5 Star Hotels. It helps to understand a lot of the hotels date back to the Economic boom of the 70s/80s, when Hawaii was THE tropical Tourist destination for the 1st world. A lot of those places are still around, with a surprising number having much of the original construction still in service. And because renovation is so expensive, even in the off seasons, you get a lot of the original "building code" design artifacts and safety equipment still around. Interestingly enough.... equipment from that era is also impressively robust; so its entirely possible to find old systems that still work. And if a whole system fails from age or superseded by new safety codes, they're usually kept in place with a more modern system installed along side them.
Put that all together, and it creates this incredibly surreal experience if you have any kind construction or engineering background. A living time capsule of 70s/80s era construction and equipment that never got replaced.
As a side comment about the shower and humidity..... its so humid in Hawaii year round (effectively being all equatorial coastal land no matter how inland you get), you may as well be sleeping in a shower. In general, any air flow sucks in MORE humidity from the outside, making mold growth a common problem in hotels. To combat this, a lot of hotels lean on their Air Conditioning units running dehumidifier duty, and the room itself being a closed loop. Its why the Hotel gets mad when you leave the windows open when you're out, and why some hotels AC systems get stupidly cold at night. Its basically the AC system trying to extract the humidity, and runs so long, it overly chills the room in the process. Some also have poorly tuned humidity thresholds, and run almost non-stop because it can't hit the 50-55 target smart systems go for. The newer ones are probably better; but the ones I worked on pretty frequently ran into issues where guests would develop sinus problems from the cold air while they sleep.
I took a crack at figuring out where he went, and I'm kind of sure its The Shores At Waikoloa, or the Bay Club Hilton thats like right next door to it. Both have the same condo type buildings, and the reviews of the Shore had more then a few comments about the 70s era construction.

You can find it too if you look. You dont even have to look hard. Like where I used to work. They converted their outdoor lighting from 240V sodium (I think) to 120V LED. In the breaker box, they took out the double pole breaker and put in a single pole, which is fine, but they connected both hot wires to the same screw. And at the other end, they just put a wire nut on the end of the unused wire. So now, theres a live wire in the wall with probably nothing covering it because I'm sure the wire nut came off

FWIW though, the "it's vs. its" one can be kinda confusing, I have to look that one up myself just to be sure sometimes! But since that'd be super confusing, we don't do that (and also there are often special rules for pronouns, such as "his" and "hers" instead of "he's" and "she's" to indicate possession, as that would cause the same ambiguity as before)
