    Manufacturers created different mounting systems to separate the photographer from as much of his *money* as possible.

      It is partially that, but it is also to force brand loyalty when buying a lens. Also they work in different ways, Nikon cameras have a built-in motor while Canon builds the motors in the lenses. There are pros and cons to both.

    Just a small critique on the video (which I think has been helpful) is to slow down and not jump through terms terribly fast. Trying to follow type of mount, crop sensor, and camera can be difficult when you are just learning them! Just a tip!

    "Alright guys we need some stuff on this desk" "hmmm how about a light!" "ahh good idea, photographers need lights" "How about a single 20lb dumbbell!" "yes perfect! Everyone knows photographers like to get their swell on" "And how about one of those wooden dummy things playing hopscotch" "YES YOU'RE A GENIUS!"

    Lots of good information in this video but you should have also included the Pentax K mount and the fact that Pentax is the only one (as far as I know) where you can mount full manual legacy lenses and screw mount lenses (with a screw mount adapter).

    On thing you forgot about Nikon is that the mid to upper level DSLRs are all fully compatible with AI and AI-S full manual film prime lenses. Indeed one of the key advantages of going with Nikon is the longevity of the F mount. If you dont' mind manually focusing many of these lenses are a great option, especially if you are on a budget. They are excellent optically, built better than any modern G series prime lens, and are very affordable on e-bay. For example my Nikkor 105mm f/2.5 AI-S lens which is in like new condition was only $225 and is just a beautiful lens optically. It is one one of the legendary F mount portrait lenses. Unless you need AF you can't really do better than that lens for the 105mm focal length.

    PENTAX
    K mount for SLR cameras which is the same for last 40+ years and work, you can also easily adapt M42 screw mount lenses as the focal distance is the same.
    DA lenses are for APS-C, DFA lenses are for FF cameras and APS-C cameras. You can mount any lens on any camera, even you can mount the most recent DA lens on the old film body. And of course all those millions of old K lenses to the new body.
    645 mount for current medium format cameras..
    Q mount for small compact with interchangeable lenses..

    • @BandH

      If the electronic connections on the lens mount is somehow scratched, than may affect the communication between it and the camera. It would depend on how extensive the damage is to the connections.

    • @BandH
      @BandH  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Using an EF 70-300mm f/4-5.6L IS USM lens on the Canon EOS 80D would apply a 1.6x crop factor to the focal length of that lens.

    • @BandH
      @BandH  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Hannah Ilagan - Sorry to hear that you're having this issue. If the lens is connected to a lens adapter, and the adapter itself is stuck to the lens, the first thing I would do is mount it to a camera and see if it is then easier to remove the lens from the adapter's mount. If the lens is stuck to the camera itself and you're having trouble removing it, don't force it. I would recommend that you take the lens to a local camera store or repair center and have a technician remove it for you. - Yossi

    One of my big frustrations right now is finding an adapter that will enable me to take an older (say Vivitar lens) and fit it to my Canon 50D. Hey, no problem you say . . . But part of the issue is that I do not wish to lose the ability to focus on infinity. Manual settings, no problem. . .

    • @BandH
      @BandH  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      The right adapter is really going to depend on the lens mount on your Vivitar lens. We invite you to e-mail us directly to askbh@bhphoto.com along with more information about the lens mount you have or even a photo of the lens, so they we may review your options.

    You've done yourselves a grave disservice by not mentioning Pentax and the K mount, which can also use old Ricoh and Chinon lenses as well as the third-party stuff from Tamron, Sigma, Vivitar etc, without modification or adapters.

    which adapter should I use for
    Canon EF 28-70mm 1:3.5-4.5 lens to Nikon D3300 DSLR?

    • @BandH
      @BandH  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      The FotodioX Vizelex Canon EOS Lens to Nikon Camera Adapter with Macro, B&H # FOVSLXEOSNIK, is the only lens adapter we carry that allows you to use a Canon EF/EF-S lens on the Nikon F-mount lens mount. Do note that this is a manual adapter, and so features such as auto-focus and image stabilization systems will not work. Manual exposure and metering are still possible with your camera's aperture priority mode.

    With full frame image circle lenses used on sub full frame imagers will yield greater image quality since you capture the from the centre area focused by the lens, not pushing the limits at the edge of the image circle

    whats the difference between a t-mount and t2-mount? i have a t-mount lens i'd like to put onto a canon eos mount camera. i've seen plenty of "t2-mount to pentax k" (where i then would toss on an adaptor) essentially.... would the 2t fit over a t??

    • @BandH
      @BandH  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Michael Dillon - You can use your T-mount lenses with a T2 adapter: they are the exact same mount. The only difference between a T and T2 adapter is that the T2 adapter enables the lens to be rotated on the camera body by loosening the screws in the adapter. Otherwise, there would be no other difference. That being said, below is a link for adapters we carry that would enable you to mount a T-mount lens onto a Canon EOS body. *Christina* AskTH-cam@bhphotovideo.com

    • @BandH
      @BandH  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      The Nikon D3200 will autofocus with Nikon F mount lenses in the AF-S series or with 3rd Nikon F mount lenses that have a built in motor such as those from Tamron, Sigma and Tokina. Here is a link showing all the compatible lenses.

    Hey there! Quick question. When shooting on mft camera, is there a noticeable difference in outcome using native lenses vs ef lenses? Or would one outshine the other in any sort of way? Thanks in advance

    • @BandH
      @BandH  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Using a lens with a native micro four thirds mount will likely outperform an adapted EF lens in terms of auto functionality: autofocus, adjusting aperture, ability to use auto exposure modes. While Canon has some fantastic optics in their line, I would suggest using micro four thirds mount lenses when possible. And adapter can have a negative impact on the functionality of the lens. *Christina* AskTH-cam@bhphoto.com

  • @BandH
    @BandH  9 ปีที่แล้ว

    +Conner Chant It may be possible but it depends on what particular mount the Sigma lens you have is made for. They do not offer any f1.4 type lenses for this mount currently, so it would require an adapter. You may send an email to askbh@bhphoto.com and indicate what mount the particular Sigma lens you have is for, and our agents there can then check to see about the availability of an adapter to mount it on your NEX 5t camera. - Yossi

    Could you please do a video on adapters? I am in the market for a Canon FD to Canon EF adapter. I have a full frame camera and am wondering if using this lens once a get an adapter will change much when it comes to the photo taking experience. Any advice?

    • @BandH
      @BandH  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      +WhaleTank B&H carries several adapters that can be used to mount FD lenses onto a Canon DSLR. These would all be compatible with full frame cameras. Though, they all require an optic to enable an FD lens to retain focus at infinity (ability to focus on things in the distance). These optics aren’t up to the same quality of the Canon optics, so don’t be surprised if you FD mount lenses aren’t performing at the same optical level on a Canon DSLR as they did on your film SLR. *Christina* askbh@bandh.com

    this wasn't really helpful. in this age of A7 and GH#, lens adapters are crucial and i still don't fully understand whats going on. what is the difference between 100$ metabones adapter to 400$ one? does it have to be a metabones one? what are the crop factors it creates? AF?

    • @BandH
      @BandH  9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      +Nati Amos This video was focusing more on the different lens mounts from manufacturers, and matching lenses that have that native mount. As for adapters, prices can vary based on quality and build. When looking at different adapters from the same manufacturer, those can vary in price based on features. From Metabones, their adapters tend to vary in price depending on if the adapter is an auto adapter (allows for autofocus), if it?s a Speed Booster (increases the angle of view and maximum aperture of the lens being used), or is simply a mechanical adapter. If you have questions about the differences between specific adapters, or were looking to get suggestions, you might send an email to our Photo Department. We would be happy to offer advice and explain the differences between several adapters. *Christina*
