Millennial Prog-Metal Guitarist here - there are things from before my time that I absolutely latch onto (outside my Metal roots) - this song is one of them...beautiful piece. To reduce it to "RomCom" or "Chick Flick" stuff is a mistake. I'm sure they'd have the same take about things like Tears For Fears "Head Over Heels".

Really well done lads. The Cure have been my favourite band for almost 30 years, as a friend at school lent me a copy of this exact album when I was 11 or 12... STILL my favourite album of all time, and when I feel I discovered music. Regarding Lovesong, Robert Smith wrote it as a wedding present to his wife, as they'd been married in 1988... hence the overt romance and outpouring of emotion. That being said, I think "Lovesong! It's a lovesong!" has serious potential... for when the Lost In Vegas band finally gets going. 😂 All the best lads, and cheers for the great videos.

MTV Icon is a series of annual television specials produced by MTV between 2001 and 2004, each paying homage to a musical artist or band selected as a cultural icon, in a format similar to the network's annual Video Music Awards and Movie Awards events. A live audience of musicians, celebrities, and fans would view a biographical film depicting the career of that year's chosen icon, interspersed by celebrity introductions and live performances of popular artists playing cover versions of the icon's songs. The iconic artist would then accept an award and perform a live set of their own at the close of the show. The series celebrated Janet Jackson in 2001, Aerosmith in 2002, Metallica in 2003, and The Cure in 2004. (Wikipedia)

Everything prior to this was a completely rip off of bands like T.Rex (metal guru/panic) and The Chameleons. P.S I love The Smiths and Morrissey but we can't deny the fact that they did not create a genre or sound. Morrissey's diva persona and attitude is what really launched their career (after they broke up). So much so that Johnny has said Morrissey was the reason he left The Smiths. He hated his lyrics and felt he ruined his music writing.

Morrissey is very easy to hate. I grew up straddling this weird fence of being an artist and musician in love with the music of the Cure and the paintings of Caravaggio who was also a carnivore that played football and building/racing cars and loved the music of Ministry. It was this odd feeling of hating everything that came out of Morrissey’s mouth while listening to his music on a date with the goth girl from my art class because it felt romantic.
Thankfully, I found out Robert Smith despised him as a person while covering a song by The Smiths. That seemed to put my misplaced teenage angst at peace.

While this is distinctly 80s, this sounds nothing like what came before it and it's not remotely formulaic to "the 80s". What's brilliant about this song is the way it mixes contrasting elements. The drums are very bright, up and energetic, but the organ is playing this minor key, very chill, slow paced, more contemplative riff. The vocals speak of intense and comforting love, but the singer is feeling, also, the melancholy of that. But that's not sadness, it's the yearning for this love. It's somewhat like when people cry when they experience intense joy. That's what's so brilliant about this song. He's not singing the simplistic, "oh I'm so in love, look how happy I am" bubblegum pop nonsense. He's reflecting the the depth and complexity of the emotion, how intense love can leave you exposed, humbled and grateful.

So I think some of the emotional impact of this song is probably lost with age. There are a whole generation of people who grew up with songs like this in their youth. If you were the right age where this kind of piney over the top emotional music lined up with young love it carves a pretty good rut in your brain. This is the song that takes me back to lost girlfriends and broken hearts.
If I had never heard this until my now forty somethings I doubt it would get the same reverence I give it now. Does the fact that I think nostalgia carries a big weight on this song mean it is bad? Nah, it's still a great song but I think it might just be a great song for a more narrow audience.

And then the inevitable experience of hearing this song morph into grocery store Muzak over the years...but Fascination Street is the one I feel stands the test of time the best.

This is really interesting to watch with George & Ryan. The Cure have at different times of my music listening life been my favourite band and the band that probably effected me the most.
Pretty much most times I’ve tried to play them or introduce them to a friend it hasn’t really worked and watching this is sort of similar to doing that.
They aren’t really a band you just put on like this and listen to a song and then say “oh yes this is awesome”. I kind of even understand why they and other friends I’ve shown react this way.
I’m not really sure how you do get into the Cure but it just happens. I heard Just Like Heaven on a compilation, brought that and somehow got hooked after a few listens and virtually brought and listened to their whole catalogue over a 5 year period after that.
I’m not sure what I’m getting at but watching George & Ryan then I still understand why people don’t just get caught straight away but when you do the back catalogue and their career is just one of the best things a music lover can fall into.

Kudos for zeroing in on the Bassline straight away. Something that a LOT of other reaction channels seem to miss out on - the actual music.

So "Lovesong" as The Cure's debut for you guys. *sigh* Well, this is the problem as your channel continues to grow (which I'm happy for) but the more people you have chiming in the higher the chances of the more "popular" songs getting all the votes. For bands this influential, it would be great if you could take it from the beginning and move through the history of the band. Even if that is only one "representative" song from the album which I recognize has its own limitations. Anyway, love the work guys. Keep pressing on!

@ghost mall That's what happened when they listened to Joy Division's "Colony". This 1 guy kept insisting it was golden, but the looks on Ryan & George's faces surely would've disappointed him. It just wasn't that good.

    My obligatory beg list...
    1) Tool - "Right in Two". You haven't done anything that blew your doors off lyrically in a long time. The drumming in this will make George's head explode, and it's just an amazing song in every measurable category.
    2) Clutch - "Electric Worry". I want to see Ryan smiling from ear to ear, and George yelling "PLAY. LIST." Nobody on this planet that likes rock/metal doesn't like this song, it's one of the catchiest tunes you'll ever hear and it's impossible not to bug out to it. Southern flair, killer riffs, and a dude going buckwild on a harmonica.
    3) The Sword - "Barael's Blade". Stoner metal, you guys haven't done this genre yet and you would make a legion of pot smoking D&D nerds piss their pants.
    4) Black Label Society - "Suicide Messiah". I call this biker metal, it's basically the theme song to a bunch of bikers sitting in a strip club. This is Ozzy's permanent replacement guitarist after Randy Rhoads died and he plays some of the dirtiest licks of all time. Dirty, southern sounding head moving groove with a sick solo at the end.

😷I’m the biggest metal head ever and totally despised all the synthy hair emo type bands of the 80’s. However, I got free tickets to see the Cure in 1996, and was so totally blown away at how great they were ‘LIVE’ that I would definitely recommend seeing them if you EVER get the chance. I felt just like Ryan, UNTIL I saw them live, super top notch musicians. I didn’t know but maybe 3 or 4 of their songs at that time. They are the best of the best really.🤘🖖✌️🎸🥁🎹🎤

Agreed. We used to listen to The Cure when we'd go surfing on Okinawa when I was in the Marines back in the 80s. Really like The Forest, In Between Days, Just Like Heaven, and Primary. We all thought the Disintegration album was aptly named as we felt their new stuff was a watered down more mainstream versions of the earlier stuff we loved. But man! You get Primary or The Forest stuck in your head and go surfing and its just perfect!

The Cure is my favorite band in the entire world. 40 yrs later Robert Smith still kills it live. If I may suggest other songs, Lullaby, Boys Don’t Cry, Charlotte Sometimes, Killing an Arab, Mint Car, Cut Here, Fascination Street, Disintegration, Hanging Garden, The Kiss, 100 Years, A Letter To Elise, The Love Cats, 10:15 On A Saturday Night, This Twilight Garden.. as much as I love Love Song there are sooo many better Cure songs
