What an incredible model! It looks beautiful, and I'm fascinated that it actually runs with a steam turbine just like the full size PRR S2 did.

Absolutely astounding workmanship the likes of which most of us can only dream of aspiring to. Well done Werner.

That is an amazing piece of design engineering and workmanship. And they even conducted drawbar horsepower measurements on it. Fantastic!

Herzlichen Gluckwunsch from New Jersey USA !
    A superb piece of engineering.
The real turbine fuel consumption at low speeds was enormous and made this locomotive impractical.
Is there a way to lower fuel consumption at lower speeds ?
    Danke.

Werner I am looking at the McCabe 6202 again that we spoke about at Warwickshire 70th show. Total redesign required I think.

I'm going to try one of those commercial turbines as a prime mover (suitably uprated!)

Steam turbines was better then piston...also government wanted to use diesel for better business money making....steam turbine train can use pellets or even wood....so you cant make no money out of wood

Does it use Parkinson turbine or another

Charles Parsons invented a multistage impulse steam turbine. The PRR-S2 model turbine is single stage, but operates on the same principle.

Am i wrong on this, or do steam turbines waste energy in this form of usage? I was wondering why there aren't many locos of this type, and am not sure why they would stop using one if they have such immense power.

The torque characteristic of a steam turbine is not very suitable for traction applications. At low rotor speed, efficiency is abysmal. Besides, manpower required to prepare steam engines for duty, run and maintain them is much much higher then for electric or combustion engines. It's money that counts!

1.turbine can only spin in one direction, so the train with one turbine can't move backward. Class S2 installed 2nd smaller turbine just for moving backward, but provide power only 1500hp
2.The turbine has high efficiency ONLY at high RPM,.Since train has shorter traveling distance between each stops than airplan and ship, it spend more time at less efficient low RPM. Of couse there is an alternative way: use turbine drive generator, then power electric motor. However diesel engine is much easier to run.

Does it actually use steam turbines? That would be crazy! 😂😂😂
