I’m a “stage 3” predator hunter. I’ve refined what I like down to the least amount of kit to pack into a stand.(ongoing process!!) This is after spending a ton of money on gear. I mean a TON.
The thing I love about coyote hunting is the unpredictability of the target. I’ve had them charge the caller while using coyote vocals, and I’ve had them ignore vocals completely only to charge in using prey calls. I’ve shot them while using sounds that don’t even exist in my area.
As far as wind goes, it’s probably the most important factor for me. That said, I’ve had coyotes come in downwind and even circle my parked truck.
Always unpredictable has been my experience.

Wade that was awesome. I wish I heard this about 20 years ago. The part about rifle upgrades and practice shooting really touched a point with me. Years ago I had no land to shoot on but friends asked me to go with them. Before long I was shooting with a few calling teams having a blast. I found out they all wanted me for my shooting skills. My rebarreled Remington 600 and VariX 3 scope were good medicin for song dogs. Fast forward several years and it was grandson time. We worked on firearm safety and basic skills first. He then just tagged along helping to spot game, coyotes, pigs and bobcats. When he turned 10 he got to carry a 22lr to dispatch any still moving game. His marksmanship continued to grow. When he turned 11 I broke out a pile of AR15 parts. Not just any parts. Left hand AR15 parts. With only minor direction he assembled his own first centerfire rifle. At the range he had it shooting tight. The next week calling we go. This is summer time and its hot west Texas. I got an unsuspecting young male coming straight at us. I looked over to be sure he was ready for me to stop it, and bang. He downed his first called in Coyote with a rifle he built while the dog was running hard straight at us. I think he too will be asked to be on some calling teams.

Really glad you helped him build a left hand rifle. I grew up shooting right hand rifles as a lefty, and when the time came that I was able to afford my own left hand gun, I literally couldn’t work the bolt properly. Lolol. Didn’t shoot my first AR platform until I was well into my 30’s (I’m 61 now), and quickly grew tired of taking cases to the forehead. Didn’t shoot another one until I got my hands on a Stag during Covid. Good luck to you on your journey with the grandkid.

@gonepostal9101 it is a lot of fun. He is really taking to anything mechanical and loves nature so I bet this journey is not the last.

Started going light with minimal gear several years ago. The enjoyment of the hunt went way up. Just as successful, maybe more so.

Quick story, batteries died on my remote second stand of the night, debated headin to bed but figured I could make one more stand in the neighborhood since the wind was right. Went out with the MFK diaphragm, which comes with on every stand, let a couple howls rip and got a pair to come in from over 1000yds out. Then dispatched both.
Also was worried we weren't gonna get the reality of the situation, but you didn't let us down.

You should take the scope and rail off and reinstall everything to proper torque. Go back and shoot with a proper rest or sandbag, using a bipod with a flimsy stock like that could cost you 1 moa. Take some hornady match with you as well for comparison. You’ll need to use a chronograph to rule out any issues with the ammo itself, can’t just go off the groups. I’ve had as much as 100fps spread on a 3 round group even with hornady match ammo (bad lot).

I would like a video comparing the new 6mm cartridges. 6 arc, 6 gt, 6 max. Also the different Creedmoors 22, 6mm, 6.5.

But Wade, buying all the cool shit is sooo much fun. My brother and I bought an old 4 door pickup to hunt in so a couple other people could go with us. We had so much shit in the back seat no one else could go! A chair, a suppressor, a shooter, and any kind of call, and get after them. I still take lots of shit though. 😅

When your journey finally gets to the point when coyotes aren’t cutting it anymore and you move on to pedophiles, please make sure to give us an equipment update!

If your significant other hasn’t busted your ass due to time spent predator hunting then you’re not in stage 2 yet.
