- I got so many questions on my Facebook post this morning about my red currants that I thought I would make a video explaining a bit more about how I grow them and propagate them and some of the pest and disease issues. Hope it's helpful!

Thank you so much for your content. As a fellow chronic illness/autoimmune warrior, I hope you feel improvement with the surgery. I applaud you for your boundaries and prioritizing yourself, and look forward to your content, whenever you are able to do the work 😊
Currants are so beautiful, I had no idea!
i hope you recover well!!! i put my currants in a bit more sun, based on *historic* temperatures, and now i am slowly planting things in more shade...
Thanks for the rundown on the different varieties
Your explanation of the blister aphids issue is a great example of "integrated pest management" as it's being taught now. In some cases,, the real harm caused by the pest is so minimal that it simply doesn't require human intervention. Just let it run its course.
As of last year, here on Vancouver Island, we have stink bugs which love my black currants. Last year I didn’t really understand what was happening, being new to gardening. This year I was prepared. A yogurt container with soapy water and daily stink bug hunting with gloves. After five or six weeks of diligently hunting them, they have no predators here, my black currants are big and luscious once again and the life hasn’t been sucked out of my plants.
"The current currant bush." That made me giggle. :)
I didn't realize I'd said it until I was editing and I giggled. 😂
English is ridiculous.
Happy/not happy to see that you have blister aphids, too. My currants get them every year. Didn't affect this year's harvest at all - got a great crop of reds! My black and white are still babies - hoping for a crop of black next year, and white in 2 years.
re: propagation - my purple gooseberry propagates itself. It flops over and roots wherever it hits the ground. I give away at least one new plant every year.
Great information on currant plants. Thanks!
Thank you! ❤️❤️
I was wondering what the problem was with my red currant leaves. Glad to hear it's not really a problem.
Thanks! From a fellow Tucson refugee now in Carbondale CO where it was also hot (96F) today. But I can grow currants here!
Thank you!!! ❤️❤️❤️
Thanks for explaining what blister aphids are and the damage they cause. The new red currants that I introduced to my garden had these, and do again this year. I’m relieved to know they have a minimal impact on the fruit production.
I put Currant cuttings everywhere. I just stick them in the ground too and at least half to 3/4 grow. Reds my favorite and like yours, a great year for them. Black currents not my favorite but I put them into my zones 4 & 5 for wildlife. Glad I haven't had those fruit flies here yet (knock on wood!)
White imperial and primus white are the best!! I have a few of each and they are amazing for fresh snacking. My kids eat cups of them every year before I can use them for baked goods or anything else.
White currents are lovely! I also wish to recommend a green variety of black currents. They are great for snacking because they taste very sweet. However, I'm not sure if they are available in USA.
I just bought my first currant bush on plant clearance. She is small and so I am up-potting and protecting this first year to see how she does. Thanks for the info.
Currents are the best. I have a couple of varieties in my food forrest. They are super delicious. I need to get more and plant them everywhere. Nice to know I can prune them and transport to other parts of the garden. Thx for sharing
Adding my two cents - While currant *fruit* tends not to have a lot of pests, the bushes themselves are a favorite winter snack for my local deer population. Which is.. not ideal. They wont kill the bush, but they absolutely reduce the next years harvest by clearing off most of the previous years growth. Those of us that are somewhere with both deer and winter may need to fence or net them.
Thanks for this info! I never have to worry about deer in the city. Coyotes and raccoons and bunnies? Yes. Deer? Nope.
Please don’t be mad at me but I think people watch less now because you don’t talk about the garden as much. This is what most of us come here for 😢
Get well soon! 🎉
I have white, pink and black currants and love them! They're so easy to grow and propagate! Also Jostaberries and Hinnamaki Red Gooseberries are delicious and produce lots!
😊🌱💚🌻🐝
condolences to you about the duck and racoon situation, how are your elder ducks?
Two have passed from natural causes (found them expired in the run). They had such good long lives!
@@ParkrosePermaculture i remember when i first stumbled across your channel and you introducing us to the elder ducks, they were blessed with a great life, my sincere condolences. thank you for sharing your journey and the stuff you have learned along the way, you have inspired me alot in my own journey, big hugs.
Oh interesting, do you know if the blister aphid affects Viburnum species? I have an oval leaf viburnum whose leaves that were doing that exact same thing, more earlier this year but they still have a few leaves doing it. Mostly when the leaves are younger, like it happens to the choicest young leaves it seems. I figured aphids but I had no idea what type and I can never see anything on them.
2 QUESTIONS - ONE OF MY OLDER GOOSEBERRY BUSHES HAS LICHEN GROWING ON IT, IS THAT A BIG DEAL ? WHAT SHOULD I DO ?
Hey there Angela, what is a red currant curd? You mention it when saying that red currants are only good for making jelly or curd..
Curd is a sweet spread made with egg yolks. It's usually made from lemon or lime or currants.
Do you use thuricide?
what variety of red currant do you have? ah, asked before you got there in the video
No idea!
