    Something which might be confusing in your video on scrolls is that you can make them without a quire or book binding first in the process (and they don't need thread). Once you're pressed into a paper sheet, you just make rock scroll rollers then Make Scroll. i always thought this was a little less confusing than Codexes to make

    • @JadedEvild0er
      @JadedEvild0er ปีที่แล้ว

      Agreed. I've been doing my libraries with scrolls, its just simpler. I've also heard there are some bugs with Codexes, though I can't recall off the top of my head "what" those are so maybe that isn't accurate anymore. I do love watching my libraries grow and the often zany things that get written and created.

      @@JadedEvild0ersorry for the usage of confusing words, im a new player, but i've heard of one bug where, after the whole process of book binding, the price of the book ends up lower than the price of the writing used to compile it. maybe thats the one

      Here's an interesting fact with scroll-making: in Ancient Roman times, this was the only way to make a "book". Here was why: the Ancient Romans didn't use true paper; they used a paper-like substance called papyrus, which was made from the papyrus plant -- which is a type of bulrush that grows in Egypt in the Nile River. To make papyrus sheets, craftsmen would cut through part of the hollow stem of this bulrush; and would hammer the stem flat. The resulting sheet, while it resembled paper in that it could be written on, could not be folded without breaking it. The whole papyrus industry collapsed along with the Western Roman Empire; and because papyrus was no longer being traded throughout Europe, the Europeans had to come up with a different writing material, which was parchment. Parchment was made from sheep skin; and unlike papyrus, parchment can be creased without breaking. This means that, like true paper, parchment can be made into actual books. However, unlike paper, parchment is labor-intensive to make; and it was therefore always much more expensive than papyrus or paper.
      True paper is basically made by mashing plant fibers (ironically, the fibers of papyrus rushes can be used in this process!), mixing these with water, and putting it on a special drying sheet. Once this material is dried you have paper! The mixture of water and mashed plant fibers is called pulp, by the way. A time-traveler could put the entire European parchment-making industry to a halt overnight by simply demonstrating in a town square the process of mashing plant fibers in a mortar and pestle, mixing the mash with water, and then spreading the pulp across a metal mesh and then allowing the pulp to dry. So, all that's needed to end the parchment industry are any type of high-fiber plant such as cotton, a mortar and pestle, and a metal mesh!

    One thing you didn't mention but is very important is that binding books is actually completely bugged. Once the quire is bound into a book it destroys all the values the quire had and will list it as being a "one page manual" no matter what, and make it worth far less. It's been that way since at least 2015 unfortunately and never got fixed.

    I think Dabu & Simon Swerwer need to do a Library centric tune for DF. I always imagine something like a DF-esque adaptation of Julian Smith's "I'm Reading a Book"

    If you want to focus on a library early on, I suggest embarking with at least one dwarf with the writer skill. Also, I will set my worldgen for 250 years, but stop after I see 3 books appear in the history, which is usually around year 150-160. The formula seems to involve the age of the world, and 100 years isn't enough, even if you have scholars with writer skills and paper; after 3 books are written in the worldgen, I usually have an easier time getting them to write. Also, having around 4 scholars and at least 20 tables seems to help (in the library, but also plenty more in a dining hall). The tables are because dwarves will look for an empty table in the library when they want to write, and if all the tables are occupied, they seem to give up on writing. And four scholars is because it takes a while for each individual dwarf to write, so if you want 2-3 books in the first year, you should only start your library when you can afford to devote several dwarves to scholarship. Oh, and I generally have 50 quires at that point, because like tables, having more than too many seems to up the chances of them writing. Like I said, 50 quires, 4 scholars 20-30 tables and chairs, and starting after 3 books (entries are purple in worldgen, for easy reference) appear in world generation, and I have no problem getting a few books per year. Of course, adding more of each of these factors increases your chances of success, with the exception of the age of the world- there is a sweet spot there. Too old, and your dwarves won't write their own books, because someone else already wrote on the subject. That might be fine if you would rather collect and trade for books rather than author them, but if you want to have your dwarves be the ones writing the majority of the world's books, then what I describe seems to work best.

    What you mentioned about one-page books is actually a bug mentioned by @Greatot
    Once dwarf writes on a quire, bookbinder will bind it into a book. Sadly it looses most material properties during process, including length.
    This is why it's currently better to use scrolls.

    I started a fort in year 5 of my world history, got ready to make a huge library, but none of my dwarves want to actually write... I feel like the age of the world and the existence of other books plays a big part in writing books too, since in my other fort in year 250+, they ARE doing nothing but write. i am really curious what actually makes dwarves write books in the code! great video :D

      maybe its because less events have happened in the world due to its young age? that's my guess

    • @frankg5534
      @frankg5534 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Dwarves bring certain knowledge. The starting 7 dwarves bring no knowledge I believe. Migrants do bring knowledge. They can only write book if they have knowledge and previous experiences in the world. So they just have little to write about I guess.

    • @quantumperception
      @quantumperception ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It seems to be the case that worldgen has a sweet spot: too young, and they won't write, but also too old and they don't either. I played around with it using the same setup, and for me, around 150-160 seems to be the range, although I just go until I see purple entries in world history three times (purple in history is specifically book artifacts being created). It just worked out that after several tries, that range of years was often when three books were produced. If you do that, the dwarves have enough history and such to write about, but the world is not so old that every subject has already been written about. Also if you let the worldgen run for 500 years, you will notice most of the books are written between years 150-275. So again, there definitely seems to be a sweet spot in terms of range of years, and I have had the most success when focusing on libraries when I begin the world after 3 books appear in the history, when I have 50 quires prepared, setup up 20-30 tables and chairs, and can devote at least 4 dwarves to being scholars (preferably with the writer skill).
