  • So amazed by the Equinox 900 on the old mansion on the hill grounds! Silver and old coins, relics and so much more found in hard hit ground! I was impressed at just how much it was pulling out of that hard hunted ground! It was an absolute blast out there metal detecting and Finding America with my brand new Minelab Equinox 900.

That place just keeps on giving... I love it.
I recently got a legend. On my second hunt with the legend , I found a complete waltham pocket watch in an area where there used to be trolley tracks in the very early 1900's. I'm still shocked on how good of condition it is....

Well I must say Greg you certainly have found a great assortment of items this week! Congratulations!
I'm really curious about the 900,
I have the 800. Is it really that much better,? I do believe your words and what I see. I do have too many areas that I have hunted for years that I would like to see get alive again.

    • @FindingAmerica
      @FindingAmerica  ปีที่แล้ว

I have loved using my 800 for the last 5 years and it's been an amazing machine (one I have often called the best machine I have ever used) but this 900 has seriously impressed me. So many things have been improved and it's even lighter and much better balanced. I thought the 800 was good in iron but this 900 is noticeably better. Faster processor, even better separation and I have been recovering some very deep targets. Just like when I first got my 800, I am just trying to share my experience and honest reactions with the new 900 each time I go out with it. I'm learning the machine along with all of you as I use it. I am never trying to sell anyone a machine through my videos. I'm just trying to take everyone along as I use it so they can experience it with me. Trust me, if I didn't like it or had any misgivings about it, I would say so and you would be seeing me swinging my 800 again. I'm out there to make finds and I will always swinging the best machine I have to do that when I am out there. At this time, I am extremely impressed with the 900 and would definitely recommend it. If you want to see something really interesting check out a channel called Todd Irvine and watch his video, "Minelab Equinox 900 v 800 on iron.. Wow!". The audio is not the best but it really blew me away when I watched it. Hope this has helped you some and if you have any other questions just let me know. ATB Greg

Hi Greg, really enjoy your channel. I was waiting on the Manticore and got impatient and bought a 900 instead, glad I bought it. I found something I can’t identify from an 1800’s homestead, none of my friends have any idea what it is. I’ve googled it and can’t find anything close. Do you know how I can ID mystery finds?

It's weird how detectors work. I've been over my front yard at least 15 times, and my backyard like 3 dozen times......and after heavy rains, metal stuffs resurface. Like WHY did my detector NOT pick this stuff up? Lol. There was an old hotwheels car, a big tablespoon, and an old bottle cap that got exposed after a downpour. It's like my detector picks up what it wants, when it wants. Lol. And every single time I went out.......every time.....I'd find stuff. Mostly coins.....hundreds of coins and buttons. I'm just curious why it didn't pick all that stuff up the very first time. And that thing you dug up with the utensil handle.....I can actually reuse that. Lol. Every time I dig up something similar, that's still reusable....I use it. Just cuz it's been in the ground forever, doesn't make it garbage. Lol. Everything I dig (to me) is treasure.......except aluminum flashing. Lol. I just throw that in recycling

Really glad you enjoy the videos and I do put them in apple cider vinegar as long as they are nice and solid. The trick I then use with my overall and work wear buttons is soaking a piece of #0000 steel wool with water and then putting dish liquid soap into the piece of steel wool. I then lay the steel wool down and rub the button back and forth face down on it. I check it as I go and it really works well to clean that type of button. Hi Greg, sorry about the lack of comments but I’ve watched every episode,
I know how time consuming it is replying to all 😂,
Just a quick question regarding the 900 ..
I’m considering purchasing eather the manticore or the Nox 900 ,
from what I’ve seen the find’s I’ve seen people find doesn’t seem to justify the price of the manticore but the 900 seems to be doing just as good if not better than what the 800 did.
    What do you recommend..
I’d appreciate your honest feedback on what you think of the 900,
    Thank you brother ATB 👍

Hi Jim, Sorry for the time it has taken me to respond. I really can't attest to the Manticore as I have not used one yet but what I have heard from trusted opinions is that it is a beast.
I can attest to the 900 as I have now used it for five solid weeks on very hard hunted ground and it has impressed me greatly. I absolutely love using it and it is a much improved machine compared to the 800. Here are some of the things I really like with the 900.
      * It is noticeably lighter and much better balanced thanks to the carbon fiber shaft, the redesigned handle which now leans forward and the vastly improved arm cuff with it's increased adjustability and comfort.
      * It has a vastly improved and new processor now which results in better separation and it is even better in the iron. Check out a video done by the Todd Irvine channel and called "Minelab Equinox 900 v 800 on iron.. Wow!" That video blew me away and should be reason enough to upgrade to the 700 or 900! Let me know what you think of it.
      * The new headphones are also much better with an improved sound, better cushioning and they pair so much better. Every time and right on time.
      * The programs are so much better tuned and optimized. I can't believe how good Park 1 is right out of the box. I haven't even really bothered experimenting with different settings as the Minelab engineers seem to have really set things up so well within the programs.
      * You have to resist pumping the sensitivity anywhere near the maximum. It's just not necessary. The factory preset of 20 seems to be where it works best
      * When i used the 800 and I got a questionable signal I would check it and see if it would give me a repeatable signal in both directions. However, sometimes it would not repeat both ways and it still might be a good signal like a coin on edge or a longer non iron object. It seems with the 900, they have really improved it so when it does not repeat both ways it is a nail. I have checked so many non-repeatables and so far every time they are nails. When I have a solid repeatable signal both ways, it has been a good target each time.
      * This machine has also been pulling some very deep targets and I have been using the small Coiltek coil. I haven't even used the 11" or 15" coil yet.
*All this performance has been experienced just using the Park 1 program. I can't wait for the cooler weather so I can hit some of my Civil War and Colonial sites with it.
With all this said, if the Manticore is even better performing that will be mind blowing for me. I do hope to have a Manticore in the future as well and it will be very interesting to see how it does. There are lots more things I like about the 900 but hopefully what I have mentioned helps you. Right now. I can't give you any input on the Manticore, just the 900 which I have actually used.
I will say that it is definitely worth upgrading from the 800 to the 900. As much as I have loved my 800, I have not even touched it since getting the 900. That speaks volumes to me as if I thought the 800 was still better, I would be using it. I use the machine that is going to perform the best for me as I have to put out a video every single week and I am always going to use the best machine that gives me the greatest chance to make the finds to fill my episode and for me, that is definitely the 900. Let me know if you have any other questions about the 900. ATB Greg

Might need to invest in the 900 instead of the manticore, as most of my detecting is in public places and full of trash,

    • @FindingAmerica

Sorry but that is absolutely incorrect. I have used Minelab machines for years and have built my channel using the Equinox 800 and have accrued countless hours of use on my Equinox 800 over the past five years. I have loved using my Equinox 800 but there is no doubt in my mind whatsoever that the 700 and 900 models have been vastly improved over the 600 and 800 models. The new models have a much faster processor, better target separation and an even more improved ability to hunt in iron. As for price point, I definitely would not say the 600 and 800 models are "way cheaper" at all as the Equinox 700 model is only $100.00 more than the Equinox 600 model while the Equinox 900 model is only $200.00 over the Equinox 800 model. On top of all the improvements on the new 900 you also get a 6 inch coil included with it which is a $179.00 value all on it's own. I've also always believed that the proof is in the pudding as well and I have already done three episodes with the 900 going over HARD HUNTED ground previously hunted with my 800 and the finds I have been able to recover in that ground using the 900 have been very impressive.

    Just awesome as always, Greg.
I have a question… are you a firm believer in “you get what you pay for?” Your last few episodes have been about a new (and likely pricier) machine that finds items that previous units have missed.
I am three years into this hobby and have the Garrett Ace 400. It’s decent, and I’ve gotten better in terms of learning it (which I realize you have to do with any detector) and learning my local area’s history with old maps, etc. Doing so has certainly helped already this calendar year from the last two years, but I can’t help but think that if I just doubled my spend ($450 to $900 or $1000), that I’d be finding more. I can’t even imagine what I’ve been passing over out of frustration or the machine not picking up something as well as a better unit would.
You seem to love the Equinox 800 and 900. I’ve looked into them, but the cost is prohibitive at the moment.
My current Ace 400 is breaking down (plastic falling apart, screws loose on the coil, etc.), so I’m aiming for something new sooner than later.
My dad is 84 with Alzheimer’s and in assisted living, but I guarantee his mind is still good enough to tell me, yet again as he did when I was a child, to pay the extra money for something if you want it… you get what you pay for.
In your opinion, is the higher investment really worth it? Thanks so much! 👍🏻
PS) I did manage to find something sweet yesterday… based on two examples online, a pre-1930s Girl Scouts pocket knife! It was under some leaves, but right on the surface with no digging involved. Has a sweet half inch eagle emblem on the side with the letters GS alongside it.

I have always been a believer in that adage but I also believe with metal detectors there are exceptions to that rule. You definitely do not need to spend a grand or more on a machine to get out there and find your share of great finds. Research and learning your machine are some major keys to success as you've discovered but having a machine that you can have confidence in without breaking the bank is important as well.
There are some great performing detectors out there in the medium price ranges and my choices would be:
** Instead of an Equinox 900 at 1099.00 you can get an Equinox 700 with the all the power same Multi-IQ+ performance for 400.00 cheaper at 699.00. A ton of machine for the price.
** A leftover new Equinox 600 that would run 599.00 is an option but the extra 100.00 for the Equinox 700 would be well worth saving up for.
** A used Equinox 600 or 800 would be a great option too. There are probably a lot of them on the forums.
** Although, I have not used one yet, I have heard lots of good things about the Nokta Legend. It's price of 499.95 is extremely low for what it offers and is a great bargain at that price.
** A new Xterra Pro 269.00 or Nokta Simplex 299.00 to 359.00 would also be a nice step up from the Ace 400 as well. While they are not quite as good as the aforementioned machines they are significantly less expensive.
And of course. using the FAUSA code with Kellyco will help too! :)
Well, I hope this helps you some and if you have any more questions just let me know. Thanks for watching this week's episode too! ATB Greg
